A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Winter Haze Not Lifting

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 11, 2020

Pitchers and catchers report today. I think they do, that’s what someone told me. This does nothing for me.

The weather is beautiful, I’ve stared out this window long enough. I should be itching for some baseball.

And yet, there’s no hope, nothing to get excited about. Not if you’re an SF fan.

Dood Da Doom Doom…Onward marches Z and his army of evil…hell bent on destroying the Giants. Just messing with you, Flav.

I get how some folks are frustrated.I have a different take. I know this year is a wash. Eval the kids, see if there are any keepers…that’s the main goal.

I really have low expectations, and am just happy that baseball season is back. I may not take in as many games at the yard as I have in the past, but I’ll follow the team and hope like hell they surprise me, and all the pundits, too.

Great post Chi. I feel the same way. I love the GIants and I love baseball, so bring it on. Yeah, it doesn’t look like it’s gonna be pretty for us, but I can deal with that knowing that it is part of the process of rebuilding a winning team.

SanDog – Thanks, and LOL…you and I may be the only ones in this camp this year.

      • zumiee said, on February 11, 2020 at 11:58 am

I have clearly been saying that, too. Gosh! 🙂

      • sandog said, on February 11, 2020 at 12:19 pm

Totally agree—-you were in on the ground floor Zum!

      • chipower9 said, on February 11, 2020 at 1:33 pm

Apologies for the oversight, Zume. Yes, you have been vocal on this topic, too.

Chi! Right there with you brother. I have zero expectations for this team this season. But it’s baseball and this is is my squad. I’ll be there opening day, crummy team or not. An afternoon at the yard watching a bad team is still better than a good day at work.

idk, throwing at Stros hitters can only go so far. Umps aren’t going to allow much of it before warnings happen and suspensions could follow. In order to beat them you have to get 27 of them out. Their own pitchers will defend the hitters too so any team trying to take out Altuve or Bregman will be risking injury to one of their own and it wouldn’t be 26th guy on end of the bench.

Seems like dumb idea. Beat them on the field and show you don’t need electronics to do it the right way.

    • sandog said, on February 11, 2020 at 8:52 am

Seems to me hardly anybody gets thrown at anymore. I’ll be surprised if pitchers end up going after them—-though I wouldn’t mind seeing Bregman get put on his ass a time or two.

Dirt’s POTD brings up what I think will be interesting story this season, to see how all the new coaching staff does. Success and confidence go hand in hand so see how the “going in a different direction” approach Giants leadership has taken ultimately works out.
Especially on pitching side, where pitching coach can have big influence. Sure newer dimensions might help hitters and youth might provide more offense and power, but giants will need large improvement from other side to make a dent in negative run differential.

  6. snarkk said, on February 11, 2020 at 9:02 am

Even KNBR morning guys are into ripping ZMan and all the new coaches. One coach said they were going to hit a lot of top spin grounders to the left side fielders instead of dead on grounders because that’s what you get over there. And have lefties hit most of the practice grounders to the right side fielders because 80% of grounders to 1b are by lefty hitters, and the ball comes off their bats differently than righties. I thought that made a lot of sense. KNBR crew made fun of it like it was crazy…

    • Macdog said, on February 11, 2020 at 9:12 am

This would be good if Giants pitchers can actually get ground balls instead of HRs and line drives to the gap.

    • chipower9 said, on February 11, 2020 at 9:34 am

I listen occasionally for entertainment value, but I put little on what those guys say in regards to the team from a pure baseball perspective, etc.

      • snarkk said, on February 11, 2020 at 10:13 am

I think KNBR has a major case of missing Boch blues. New field management and Zman don’t kiss their ass and they don’t like it…

      • chipower9 said, on February 11, 2020 at 11:30 am

Could be. Their premadonna asses just need to get used to the fact that there is a new sheriff in town. 😉

    • gianthead said, on February 11, 2020 at 1:05 pm

Well they should be expecting that is what our hitters are going to be doing…lot of ground balls…

Former Blue Jays pitcher suing Astros for cheating and basically ending his MLB career by clobbering him in 2017, after which he got sent to AAA and never got back…

      Mike Bolsinger…

    • willedav said, on February 11, 2020 at 10:14 am

zero chance he gets a dime. BS publicity stunt. those last 3 words, “never got back” um maybe because he sucked?

Has there been discussion here about the leaked story about expanding the playoffs by wild card teams in each league to 7 playoff teams?

I was not a fan of the one game wild card so apparently the proposal would be a best of 3 but what they are suggesting is that the best record in each division would get a bye and then the next best record would get to pick which wild card team they would what to play instead of an automatic playing the worst record and it would be best of three series. Does the division winner get the first two games at home???

That concept about picking which team they would play (and apparently would be shown on a made for TV event) is unique and would land eyeballs on the show and the additional playoff games, I think a team in a weak division easily winning their division and getting a bye versus teams in tough divisions having to fight to win should not then be penalized automatically.

Four team wild card with an opening one game round and then a best of three second round seems more fair to me. If a season ended on a Sunday, a one game wind card could happen on Tues-Wed and then the second round three games could go home-road-home for the team with the better record on a Thurs-Sat-Mon schedule and the other league with Fri-Sun-Tues.

Division winners would sit for about 10 days…but if they reduce the season by 8 games for a 154 game season, the season would end earlier and begin playoffs last week of Sept. The revenue made up for the extra 4 wild card games in each league split between all the teams maybe makes up for 4 missed home games.

    • sfsarge said, on February 11, 2020 at 4:15 pm

I feel like the the 3 game series would all be played at the same park.

Pillar signing with the Red Sox–good spot for him

    • Bozo said, on February 11, 2020 at 4:23 pm

Bye bye Bradley? Even if Pillar is only playing part time, I think the guy is going to go off in Boston.

  15. sandy32koufax said, on February 11, 2020 at 6:10 pm

You were on the right track, Chuck, just the wrong team. LA Express signed Young for $40M straight out of the Y. Ricky Ellis was his first All-Pro TE.

my dad called me today to say I’m being too negative about the team. Says there’s things to look forward to like new players coming up, surprises like Yaz and Dick, etc. I told him I’ll try to turn it around a little……

    The Jarlin Ga

  18. alleykat69 said, on February 11, 2020 at 6:39 pm

The Jarlin Garcia pickup might end up being a steal for the pen.Put up good numbers last year and he’s only 25!! That’s my positive moment for the team…

  19. Bozo said, on February 11, 2020 at 6:44 pm

My spring training guy this year is Melvin Adon. I usually go with a position player but this year I’m watching the flamethrower in the bull pen bring it.

    • djloo27 said, on February 12, 2020 at 3:50 am

Santiago Casilla was the most unsung pitching hero of the 3 in 5 teams…

  20. alleykat69 said, on February 11, 2020 at 7:11 pm

And now another old washed up player signs with the Giants..Pitcher Trevor Cahill(32 pitches like he’s 42)come on down, to fight for that 5th spot in the rotation are last spot in the bullpen!!!
It’s one thing to keep dumpster diving saving tons of money on the roster, but it just shows they don’t want to even reach mediocrity anymore..

    • djloo27 said, on February 11, 2020 at 7:31 pm

      Made me think of him.

      Kind of a forgotten Giant…

      • sandog said, on February 11, 2020 at 8:11 pm

One of my favorites. He was part of the inspiration for us naming Map Dawg Trevor.

      • alleykat69 said, on February 11, 2020 at 8:13 pm

Loo Yes a ghost from the past. Not the worse pitcher they have ever had, just mediocre with a lot of injuries in his career.Saw him pitch back in 89, when he was healthy and he was pretty good..

I believe I knew that, SanDawg!

I think they’re the only undefeated team in D-1.

Apparently McCann confronted Beltran about the cheating during the ‘17 season, but got “steamrolled,” whatever that means, according to an anonymous source.
