A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

JB

Just a few years ago this would have been a routine ground ball out to second base. Joe Bart wasn’t havin’ it. Legit ground ball double.

This guy is starting to grow on me. We need more hitters playing baseball like this…

We need him on the big league roster, but the soonest we would see him is after that loophole date in May.

    • Flavor said, on February 27, 2020 at 6:57 am

this extra year of control is lame. If Joe Bart is any good we’re going to be extending him anyway. My greatest dream would be trading Belt today, shifting Posey to 1B and giving JB the reigns behind the dish. Why not?

        Sounds good to me.

Check out this retro post from BF from last season. The night of the Flapalooza, the night the Giants started their one month of incredible baseball last season.
One of my favorite BF posts of all time. It’s perfectly written. Funny and poignant.

Great thread and a good picture of you guys. I have been close a few times where a ball hit and bounced under my daughter’s seat, only to have someone snag it from behind. But, I too have never caught a ball (homer or foul, or tossed to me) at a game.

    • djloo27 said, on February 27, 2020 at 7:44 am

      Magnificent!
      Wish i was there.
What’s better than a Flapalooza at this point in our lives?

      • willedav said, on February 27, 2020 at 7:57 am

yes, exactly. Dickerson did crush that. IF he can stay healthy hopefully there are a lot more of those in Giants future. Tremendous night tho. As Zum said, the kids rightfully wound up with the baseballs and it was great to meet and see everyone.

There’s kind of an eerie feeling in the U.S. regarding the coronavirus. Will it hit here or not?
For one thing, if it hits, then goodbye baseball crowds for this season. The players will be playing in near empty ballparks.
In some places in the world, malls and schools are completely shut down.

    • Flavor said, on February 27, 2020 at 7:04 am

I was thinking the same thing this morning. Attendance could easily plummet. However the tv deal is so lucrative low attendance for a season would hit the owners bottom line too much

  4. Flavor said, on February 27, 2020 at 7:07 am

Trump’s news conference yesterday was pretty funny but the best line was when he said, essentially, “we stopped people from coming into our country very early”—I was like, “dumbass that’s all you ever want to do, Coronavirus or no Caronavirus”. That’s his answer to everything, lol. And that was literally the only thing he could point to that was something tangible that the government was doing to address this problem.

  5. chipower9 said, on February 27, 2020 at 7:33 am

A couple threads back, you made the case for Bart starting with the big club, Flav, and I concurred. But, the more I think about it, I think it will be beneficial for him to go to Sacto and play every day. This team probably is not going to make a lot of noise as far as winning, etc., so let the kid go to Sac and develop. If he forces the situation later in the year, give him the call-up, then.

Nobody wants belt anyway my dream of trading him right now was never going to happen

  6. alleykat69 said, on February 27, 2020 at 8:03 am

Yes Belt is way down on the totem pole list of most teams.Even if they eat a portion of his contract I don’t see teams interested unless they’re 1B goes down with an injury.

  7. willedav said, on February 27, 2020 at 8:05 am

Belt’s tradeable, it just might take Giants kicking in some coin, which apparently is a no no for some stupid ass reason. Giants had zero issue dropping $12 mil with Cozart/Wilson deal. Z as Prez of Baseball Ops has to convince powers that be moving dead weight more than offsets $$ it might cost. Also helps on return.

I’m keeping CF watch: day before was Rickard and Ramos (who did vow to try and hang onto that spot going forward). Yesterday was B Ham and…Dubon, hmmnn.

    • Flavor said, on February 27, 2020 at 9:10 am

maybe I’m just being naive but I feel like ownership is going to finally start warming to the idea of eating salary. At this point you’d have to be foolish to not see the value in it and they have stacks of cash. There’s no reason to not cut the fat weight right now.

  8. Flavor said, on February 27, 2020 at 9:13 am

Question for you guys: would you sign Brady for one season? I think I might do it. I’m pretty over Jimmy G and I maybe Brady has one more year where he could go for it with the right personnel around him. Gotta believe he’d want to do it with his childhood team. I hate Brady but I’d warm to him for a season. And if he fucked up or couldn’t do it it would just allow me to hate him even more and that’s always a bonus for me…..

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on February 27, 2020 at 9:38 am

Hell to the no on Brady. I don’t get all the hate for Garrapolo who’s a year removed from surgery and led the team to the SB. He posted basically the same passing yards, more TDs, a better completion percentage and overall QB rating than Brady. The 49ers ranked 26 out of 32 in pass block win rate. O line blocking up the middle so Kittle doesn’t have to stay in to max protect and can be deployed in the late down passing attack is what needs to improve for their offense to get to the next level.

    • willedav said, on February 27, 2020 at 9:43 am

yikes sacrilege! more running game, better use of receivers (plus sign Brady one or two are gone because of $$) SF will be fine. More concerned with D and who stays/goes.

Listening to 95.7 game yesterday they thought G would remember 4th Q for long time and would be motivated to show he is the guy to lead them all the way.
I remember Steve Young saying in re end of first half, he could understand Shanahan not wanting to give ball to Mahomes BUT said if I’m QB “what about me?” I got the ball and some times out, why not give me a chance to put more points on board?

    • alleykat69 said, on February 27, 2020 at 9:45 am

Sure when it was 2 years ago after Jimmy G blew out his knee and they had Mullens&Beathard behind center..
But now a 42 year old QB who can’t maneuver and has loss arm strength, against a 27 year old who is more mobile and a cannon for an arm, I would say no way.
Aaron Rogers always wanted to be a 49er as well, but both him and Tom times have passed. The teams now are looking to find now the next breed of true running/ throwing QB combo like Jackson,Mahomes,Murray&even Allen..

    • chipower9 said, on February 27, 2020 at 9:45 am

Not no, but HELL NO. For all the reasons Dirt lists. I too am confounded by the hate/lack of confidence in Garoppolo . When they needed him to step-up in a shoot-out in New Orleans, he did that in spades, and the team won. When they have leaned-on the run game, and asked him to “manage” the game, he has done that, too. I think the Niners will win a Super Bowl with Garoppolo as the QB.

    • Macdog said, on February 27, 2020 at 10:04 am

Not a Niners fan, but no anyway. Kat summed it up best for me: Immobile and can’t throw deep anymore. If you do take him, you not only better have top-notch pass blocking, but also WRs and RBs that run near-perfect timing routes and can cut on a dime. And as Wille said, spending the $$ it’ll take to get Brady means sacrificing other needs. They can win it all with Jimmy G. FFS, even Nick Foles won a Super Bowl of late.

  9. alleykat69 said, on February 27, 2020 at 9:29 am

They will have to prove it to me. Like I mentioned before the only time they cut ties with an under performer was Rowand and then Bow Tie got the axe for doing it, pretty classless if you ask me..
The one interesting move was with Panik,he got left out of the big spending spree others received, and Zman said enough of this unproductive results that the Sabes/Evans was generously giving out.
So I do give Z tons of credit on that, and he ended up in the long run getting 2 exciting players Dubon&Davis, though those were separate deals for Panik for Scooter Gennett and dumping Melonface was brilliant getting the Braves to pickup his whole contract!! I’m still laughing 😆 out loud with that one!!

betting a team who won 107 and lost an ace will underperform isn’t rocket science. they could have 10 game drop off and still take division. A’s haven’t won a playoff game in forever; something always goes wrong for them especially pitching injuries. AL is lot more stratified with fewer good teams to contend with than NL though division might be tougher. The everyone hates us stuff can also be motivating factor. I think all those who say Astros are overrated and can’t hit without extra help are going to be disappointed.

  11. gianthead said, on February 27, 2020 at 10:06 am

There was a comment on ESPN after Bauer’s comments about pitchers doctoring balls that the Astros pitchers may have been up to jo good as well…could be the other shoe to drop on poor Dusty…

  13. Winder said, on February 27, 2020 at 11:42 am

Players have been trying to get an edge up since forever. One of my favorite players has always been Gaylord Perry, everyone knew he was throwing a slopball but to me that made his game all the more better. There is so much money involved in today’s game that even with the possibility of getting caught some players will still try. Kinda like the Oakland A’s sticking needles in each others butts.

  14. zumiee said, on February 27, 2020 at 12:02 pm

I watched some of the Astros/Marlins game yesterday. The Astros were the home team, and their ballpark had very few fans in the stands. I don’t know what the reasons for that were, but it was an almost empty ballpark.

    • zumiee said, on February 27, 2020 at 12:03 pm

I get that the blah Marlins were the opponent, but still, it was weird seeing so few people there.

      • zumiee said, on February 27, 2020 at 12:04 pm

Maybe there was a rain-delay that I wasn’t aware of. But if not, very strange.

  15. alleykat69 said, on February 27, 2020 at 12:14 pm

Yeah Winder, Gaylord Perry was one hell of a pitcher and competitor I was able to see at the Stick( later 60’s early 70’s) along with my other idols Mays, Marichal,McCovey,Davenport,Jimmy Ray Hart, then some Bobby Bonds mixed in later with the Ripper Jack Clark& Chili Davis..
One of the Dumbest trades among many the Giants made back then was Perry(314 big league wins and 2CyYoungs,HOF)traded for Sam “6 pack McDowell yikes!!
Did you guys know that Gaylord had a brother named Jim who wasn’t to shabby himself winning 215 games and a CyYoung.529 wins for the brothers, 2nd most to the Niekro brothers at 535..

    • djloo27 said, on February 27, 2020 at 1:23 pm

Did you know that the great Dick Allen had 2 brothers who made it to the majors?

Dick Allen, of all people, is on Twitter, and posts some interesting stuff:

Very interesting interview with Pence this morning on KNBR–said he had to completely remake his swing in order to keep his bat in the zone longer. Says he basically didn’t know how to hit until last year–got by on strength and athleticism.

    • alleykat69 said, on February 27, 2020 at 3:21 pm

I thought he was remaking his swing along with Williamson with that hitting guru in LA? Didn’t take with him?

    • djloo27 said, on February 27, 2020 at 5:17 pm

I knew it way before he did…

djloo27 said, on March 10, 2018 at 7:57 pm (Edit)

My theory on the dizzying fall of Pence is that his diminished athleticism can no longer compensate for his wretched fundamentals…

excellent call. He’s a good example of someone being open to change something certain other Bore Core members seem unable or too stubborn to do……

  18. sandog said, on February 27, 2020 at 4:27 pm

I sill support holding off on triggering Bart’s FA clock as long as possible. If it means we only win 65 games this year instead of 70—and the team is a little less fun to watch, so be it. If Boston couldn’t keep Mookie Betts, any team can get burned by free agency.

KILLS ME that some Niner fans want to dump Jimmy G. Overall the guy has been great for SF imo.

Juventus and Inter Milan are going to play a regular season soccer match before no fans due to Corona virus. That would be like the Patriots playing the Chiefs in an empty stadium. Wild stuff.

Could be from this 1919 thing in LA…

World’s Champion Home-Run Hitter to Play with All-Star Club In Southern Cal.

George “Babe” Ruth, the greatest slugger baseball has ever known, is due to arrive In Los Angeles late this afternoon and is scheduled to remain here to play winter baseball for several weeks. Accompanying Ruth are Mrs. Ruth and John Igoo, Ruth’s secretary. Ruth is scheduled to make his first appearance in the local ball park Sunday when he will play with an all-star aggregation managed by “Buck” Weaver, star third sacker of the Chicago White Sox, against another all-star club that will probably be managed by Wade Killefer, manager of the Los Angeles club.

    Brady 3 options
1)Raiders due to the Vegas hype in they’re new digs.

    3) Just Freakin Retire a
