Envelope Crisis Widening

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 6, 2020

You guys can worry about Covid19 I’m busy dealing with more mysterious trading cards arriving. This batch included several WWF wrestlers. Will Clark and Sarunus Marciulionus continue to anchor the stack. Ted Wood represented the randoms.

Wow. Love the Sarunus Marciulionus card. I remember when he played with the Lithuanian national team for the ’92 Olympics, and they did a tye-dye/Grateful Dead-inspired shirt. I used to have one of these. Someone is selling one for $200…

Those shirts were awesome. Pissed I never got one

Keena Turner a nice inclusion as well.

ha this is pretty funny Flav. WCW card with announcer? hilarious.
Wonder if Stix voted for Jessie “the Body” Ventura when he was governor Minnesota. I remember when De Anza College used to have gigantic swap meet flea market on Saturdays in parking lots. Must have been guys with boxes of stuff like this sitting around taking offers.

Bozo is right–I have feeling most of the smiley faces are gonna come from guys who hit off him.

  4. unca_chuck said, on March 6, 2020 at 7:55 am

Mike Cofer! Another fair to middling kicker after fat Ray left. Met Bob St Clair at Harry’s Hof Brau in RC. Loved that place as a kid. Good cheap food and plenty of it.

    That’s Lenvil Elliott I think. # 35

    • willedav said, on March 6, 2020 at 8:10 am

thx man I was wondering who that was. Cool player. Harry’s is awesome…RC is the only one left now that the one off Saratoga Ave is gone. Right next to it used to be Garden City, card room with nice separate bar and dining room on left as you came in. Used to host live jazz during the week (late smith Dobson on piano) and on Sunday nights they had headliners. Deal was if you made dinner rez you got in the door free. Saw some great shows there in small intimate environment for price of a meal (food was excellent and not overpriced), including Joe Henderson after he did Strayhorn tribute.

Yeah, the Bay Area is constantly in a flux of change and in my mind not for the better. So many nice places to eat are no longer there. I guess the owners got old and there was no one to keep the places afloat. Ended up in RC a couple of years ago and hardly recognised it. The only place I really miss and still think about was Blum’s in SF. I loved that place.

Better be careful opening these mysterious envelopes Flavor.Maybe laced with white powder substance and you’ll have Hazmat, every sniffing bomb squad dog, airborne outbreak 😷 terrorizing Flavor Hacienda in the form of collectible baseball cards!

  7. unca_chuck said, on March 6, 2020 at 8:39 am

Yeah, Winder, there was a Blum’s in San Mateo when I was a kid. Had like a gleaming white 50′ long curving counter where you would get ice cream sodas.

Funny thing is, I went to Village Host Pizza in Belmont (Carlmont shopping center) to meet up with a few high school buddies, and that whole place looks pretty much the same. Village Host is exactly the same. The Pine Brook Inn is gone, but it is now a beer garden. A trip.

    • alleykat69 said, on March 6, 2020 at 9:05 am

Yeah Pinebrook inn was a great place Chuck!
Turned into a Mexican Restaurant Nola’s decent not great. Now it’s a nice place with great food called Waterdog Tavern named after the hill behind Carlmont High School where the students would run the hills for track..
Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner /Full Bar in a nice indoor/outdoor seating arrangement with a little creek running thru it.

      • unca_chuck said, on March 6, 2020 at 10:40 am

Waterdog lake was a pretty heavy duty party spot back in the day. Even if it was a fairly well-kept secret. Like 4 wheeling on Sugarloaf. It was also supposedly haunted by the many kids that drowned there, and the one kid that got murdered there in the early 80s. One of them ghost hunter shows did a story on it iirc. It looked like a peaceful little lake but the weeds were so tall in the water that kids got tangled up in the weeds and drowned all the time.

It’s hard to tell but is that WCW card near the center “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase and is that a Tom Tolbert card? Speaking of Tolbert, he had Mike Tyson on followed by Mullen with his regular visit to the show yesterday. It turns out Mullen has known Tyson since way back before his amateur fighting days. There must be some good stories there. This anonymous mailer seems like one of those secret admirers you should be weary of. Are you checking the back seat every time you get in the car?

  9. alleykat69 said, on March 6, 2020 at 8:55 am

That’s are alltime “Homer” Mike Krukow in his Chicago Cubs jersey in bottom left corner!

  10. dirtnrocksnomo said, on March 6, 2020 at 9:05 am

On second look maybe that’s Rony Seikaly who somehow managed to marry Elsa Benítez

    • alleykat69 said, on March 6, 2020 at 9:34 am

      Good call Dirt!
Always liked Ronny”Psycho “Seikaly.Brought toughness , could score inside, and just a pain in the ass to other players!

  11. Winder said, on March 6, 2020 at 9:52 am

i see they have Dubon penciled in at 3rd today. Looks like he’s gonna be a special player for us this year. Hard to tell how anyone’s gonna once SP training is over and the real stuff starts but he’s definitely a keeper so far.

  12. sandog said, on March 6, 2020 at 9:56 am

I was thinking for my Sports Illustrated cover collection, I should include one swimsuit cover and, after doing a little research, Elsa Benitez was the one I was thinking I might target.
I forgot about the Rony Seikaly connection.

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on March 6, 2020 at 11:19 am

      I support your decision, dog!

  13. Winder said, on March 6, 2020 at 9:57 am

The only way that baseball card collecting worked for me was when I did it out of love for the game and players and not the money. Buying and selling was just way to much bull$*** for me

  14. wilcojoe said, on March 6, 2020 at 12:15 pm

Christ, I forgot that Seikaly even played for the Warriors. As I kid, I vividly remember a mid week game against the Heat when we snuck down to a couple empties not far behind the Miami bench. Some dude kept heckling him, saying he looked like a terroirst. He was making wisecracks about him hijacking planes and stuff that today would be a major no-no.

  15. Bozo said, on March 6, 2020 at 2:36 pm

Couple of nice innings from lil Pudge.

  16. djloo27 said, on March 6, 2020 at 2:43 pm

Who the fuck is sending you these cards???
I had a Candy Maldonado jersey custom made in 1987 when there was no internet and only one place in NYC to do it. When it was finally ready, I literally cried when I saw it. And now I can’t fuckin’ find it – driving me nuts for years…

      Yeah Loo,
      “I gots too know”
So it looks like the same person’s handwriting ( check)
They are shipped from Dallas Texas ( check)

But inquiring minds need to know?
This mystery needs to be solved before the season begins!

The Giants made a bunch of cuts today, including Shaw who is failing to impress.

    A few Optioned to Sac..
Chris “I’m destined to be a Bowker Gang player if I ever get to the bigs” Shaw!
Shocking to me Jandal Gustave who pitched so well last year..
    Sam Selman
    Melvin Adon

but you can remind everyone for a whole year, once they mention KC, “you mean the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs.”

  22. willedav said, on March 6, 2020 at 6:09 pm

Unc is right, lenvil Eilliott wore 35 with Niners, different number with Cincy.
Pavs had said earlier that guys with options (mostly younger ones) were in most danger of being sent out to minors camp.

Jazz world lost an icon today, McCoy Tyner dead at 81. Have a lot of his stuff as leader and sideman. saw him couple times too, once in trio setting at original Yoshi’s on College Ave. in Claremont part of Oaktown. powerful and lyrical pianist too. As others said in NYT obit, rest in paradise

  23. unca_chuck said, on March 7, 2020 at 8:17 am

When Tom Landry brought in 5 DBs on the Drive in the 81 NFC championship game, Walsh ran Elliott like 6 times and marched down the field.

  24. willedav said, on March 7, 2020 at 9:06 am

Despite all the cuts there are still 54 guys left in camp. Solano played SS, Rickard and BHam in CF, 1b Flores and Ruf, Dubon and Green at 3b. Davis 0-3 yesterday has struck out 12 times in 19 ABs so far. Deserve a hmmnn or a whatev?

    • Flavor said, on March 7, 2020 at 9:11 am

New guys over old guys a good enough mantra? If everyone sucks I’d rather take the young guys

  25. alleykat69 said, on March 7, 2020 at 9:26 am

One of Linville Elliott’s finest moments was that drive that led to the catch. He had 4 key runs for 31 yards that stifled the Cowboys.
Amazingly enough that championship game turned out to be his last game, although he suited up for the SB game he never played a snap and then retired..

    • djloo27 said, on March 7, 2020 at 10:21 am

Sounds a little like the unheralded Chuck Mercein taking the Pack down to the goal line in the Ice Bowl…

  26. sandog said, on March 7, 2020 at 9:57 am

I think the same concerns we have about Will Wilson—“Why was his old team so willing to give up on him?”
applies to Jaylen Davis as well.
That said, I’m glad we took a flyer on both guys and lets see what happens.

I don’t know with Solano’s lack of respect he will probably be a option candidate for Sac along with Green with this team!
The one thing that bugs me is the Giants constantly bring in the old farts that will stick, because they have plenty of guys with options they can ship out, even though the younger guys should stay!!

“Disruptions that were unimaginable months ago became real almost immediately. San Francisco’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade was postponed. San Francisco Symphony concerts were scrapped. Stanford University moved classes online. Silicon Valley companies ordered employees to work from home. Heeding San Francisco’s call to cancel large gatherings, such as concerts, sporting events and conventions, even a volunteer tree planting gathering for Arbor Week was pulled.”

Then it would make sense that Loo would not know the term. I don’t think Motocross is a big thing in Brooklyn.

Imagine if the flu itself were just being introduced into the environment, yet we knew how it was transmitted and its effects. And we had a chance to limit the overall damage it does. There would be a massive effort to contain it. That’s kinda what’s going on. It’s not entirely irrational. If you’re rooting for Juan, then you should be celebrating the craziness . . . .

    • djloo27 said, on March 7, 2020 at 5:20 pm

My 2 cents on The Corona is informed by Mrs Dirt’s employment for a major Bay Area medical provider. She works the operations side of the house and has been hosting a twice a day C-Suite level call this week. The major issue for their ~150 Bay Area clinics are a shortage of test kits and the lack of transparency from the Feds. The failure to take preventative action when this was a known in issue January is lost time that can’t be recovered and the resource/planning for the number of test kits needed is a real issue. They closed their first clinic on Friday and anticipate more this week.

I’m not a doctor or anything so take it as you will but the large scale activities seen in other countries should give us pause. They’re not taking these actions due media hysteria or some political narrative bs. Whether this becomes a major issue or not is arguable at the moment but the inability of this “Administration” to communicate a consistent/honest message to the public is a major failing imo. Anyway, rant over. Whatever. I prefer Tecate.

    • djloo27 said, on March 7, 2020 at 5:58 pm

      Tecate is excellent…

Yep, looks like RU is finally going to the tourney, first time since ’91. Geo Baker, man, this guy is clutch for the Knights.

Flemming in Vegas doing USF vs. Pacific game, St. Mary’s game later. Pacific coached by Damon Stoudamire who won coach of the year.

      • willedav said, on March 7, 2020 at 8:34 pm

he’s pretty good, man. voice kinda rises like in baseball after a good play. Guess he will be there for whole rest of it—winners today play either Gonzaga or BYU Monday night in semis .BYU is really good scoring team too. Their best player Yoeli Childs was hurt earlier but he’s back and rolling.
Watching Stanford men and women play–men at Oregon tough one, women in semis vs. UCLA. Winner gets Iionescu and Oregon women in final.

  39. willedav said, on March 7, 2020 at 8:37 pm

Gotta say too I like women’s format of playing 10 minute quarters vs. 20 minute halves. Stanford under VanDerveer runs smooth offensive sets with lot of motion and post entry, always has.
