A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Day Sports Stopped

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 12, 2020

I know not everyone has cancelled or suspended their seasons but that’s coming. NBA took the lead. Baseball will follow. Horse racing is probably gone too. I socially distance myself so far away from hockey they may have already quit too, I dunno. I’m really interested in seeing how this is going to affect my life. I spend A LOT of time watching sports, playing daily fantasy, building line ups, blogging, etc. And now it’s all going away for a while.

Trippy.

with no more sports to talk about I’m guessing I’ll be posting a lot more shit like this

Saw that yesterday. Crazy. So much bad that coulda happened.

Will competitive musical chairs go on?

    • Flavor said, on March 12, 2020 at 7:31 am

      Lol

    • chipower9 said, on March 12, 2020 at 7:53 am

As long as there are less than 250 (participants and fans, combined). 😉

Trump’s rare teleprompter speeches always look like hostage videos.
The stock market was not comforted.

“Just 12 hours after Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus, his teammate, Donovan Mitchell, has also tested positive according to Adrian Wojarowski of ESPN.
Jazz players are privately saying that Gobert has been “careless in the locker room touching other players and their belongings.” This shouldn’t come as a shock considering that two days ago, Gobert jokingly touched a handful of microphones and phones at the end of his presser, seemingly as an attempt at humor.”

Friday is supposed to be day MLB has conference to make some decisions. Do you guys think regular season will start on time and games will be played at ML parks (except Seattle I guess) without fans, be moved to ST sites, or that games will be suspended entirely (and not made up) for say a month or until further notice?

  6. willedav said, on March 12, 2020 at 9:06 am

ooh just saw Big Ten and SEC and American conferences cancelled their league tourneys.

    • willedav said, on March 12, 2020 at 9:10 am

Big 12 games coming across (on phone) per ESPN as cancelled too.

  7. rarugilman said, on March 12, 2020 at 9:07 am

Wow, what’s your beef with hockey? I would not have guessed you wouldn’t enjoy men skating on ice with sticks. What about making posts following the antics of school PE made-up games? That’s fodder for some very entertaining posts. I’m all ears (well, eyes).

    • Flavor said, on March 12, 2020 at 9:13 am

hockey sucks, man. Everyone’s darting around, they all look the exact same, i can’t follow the puck, all of a sudden they stop skating for reasons I don’t understand. All hockey does is piss me off. Till real sports fire up again I guess I’ll spend my days watching Scott Sterling videos, that guy is a hoot.

  8. willedav said, on March 12, 2020 at 9:27 am

not that it’s gonna matter, but saw in Transactions that Memphis waived Jordan Bell, who is now in G League.
From Long Beach Poly to Oregon where he left early and was drafted in dreadful mistake by Warriors, for whom he won a ring 2017-18 season.
Kinda ruins Draymond Green’s rant to Barkley who “can’t sit” at his table because he never won a championship. So John Stockton Oscar Robertson and like are out but Jordan Bell and Zaza Pachulia are in,

    • Flavor said, on March 12, 2020 at 9:36 am

draymond looked like an idiot with those quotes

    • Macdog said, on March 12, 2020 at 10:58 am

The Big O won a title with the Bucks in ’71.

      • willedav said, on March 12, 2020 at 11:30 am

yes very true. I saw that team, with Kareem.

    • unca_chuck said, on March 12, 2020 at 11:06 am

That very well may be, and far be it for Draymond to keep quiet, but WTF is Barkley so wound up about? Draymond is a solid player. No, he’s not LeBron, but neither was Dennis Rodman or Scottie Pippen or any other complementary player. Barkley comes across as a jealous punk whining like a bitch to somehow remain relevant.

Beyond that, if he wasn’t such a shitty gambler, he would have retired 10 years ago.

      • willedav said, on March 12, 2020 at 11:35 am

not sure how solid he is anymore; his offensive game has been lot worse this year when he could have done lot more. Maybe next year will be different when he is surrounded by more talent. The ejections and Ts are just plain stupid. You teach young players to be in control of their emotions and not let refs (and other stuff) get in their heads and affect their concentration on the game. I’m sure Izzo would never have allowed near the stuff Green does now, for good reason.

      • unca_chuck said, on March 12, 2020 at 12:00 pm

Still, Draymond is playing with rookies and rejects. Pretty hard to assess anything from this season.

  9. chipower9 said, on March 12, 2020 at 10:23 am

With a number of conferences cancelling their tournaments, I wonder if they proceed with the selection on Sunday. Sure would suck for those schools who would have a shot at the dance by winning their conference tournament.

  10. chipower9 said, on March 12, 2020 at 11:00 am

I know this will absolutely crush Flav – the NHL has suspended the remainder of its season, too.

    • Flavor said, on March 12, 2020 at 11:25 am

interesting. I actually had no idea if they were in season or not.

  11. willedav said, on March 12, 2020 at 11:31 am

looks like ST is done too.

    • zumiee said, on March 12, 2020 at 11:56 am

    yep

A lot of us believed the Trump presidency would have apocalyptic disastrous events, but probably no one was thinking of a virus. His two months of dithering and ignoring since January, before he finally got semi-serious the last couple of weeks, will be remembered.

    • gianthead said, on March 12, 2020 at 12:35 pm

Zum, you do realize that the common flu has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans just in the last year. We were at what 30 US deaths this morning. Will there ever be some rational perspective left in this country??? People traveling to Asia were the first to come back to the US and started to spread the infection. That is Trump’s fault??? Trump derangement syndrome has no end. Lets kill him and the VP at this point right? He was trying to avoid a panic. If he sealed off the US immediately would you have then called him a racist as the Dems and media certainly would??? As I have said for months now politically, everyone needs to relax. Everything is an overreaction and I just want to buy some god-damned toilet paper!!!

      • blade3colorado said, on March 12, 2020 at 12:54 pm

Stop comparing the fucking flu to this virus, as bone head in chief has. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases on Capitol Hill, estimates that the fatality rate of flu is closer to 0.1%. But even accounting for the mild, yet undiagnosed cases of COVID-19, he said Wednesday, it would still make it “roughly 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.” Most health experts echo this assessment.

Meanwhile, herr führer said on Monday, “Last year 37,000 Americans died” from the flu: “Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on,” he added. Huh? This clueless fuck doesn’t even recognizer that we are in recession and don’t cite backwards looking statistics such as job reports, housing starts, housing sales, manufacturing data, etc. Equally important – to him anyway – his favorite statistic, the stock market (DOW and S&P 500) is down over 25% . . . Anything over 20% is bear market territory.

        10 times more lethal . . . Get it????

      • blade3colorado said, on March 12, 2020 at 1:00 pm

“Zum, you do realize that the common flu has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans just in the last year.”

HAHAHAHA . . . Even the dip shit in the White House was waaaaaaay closer than what you cited.

      • unca_chuck said, on March 12, 2020 at 1:07 pm

Hopefully the virus will do that as Gaetz and Cruz were exposed. Louie Gomert intentionally led a group of 100 children around the capitol after being exposed.

        This is our leadership.

      • unca_chuck said, on March 12, 2020 at 1:32 pm

The entire country of Italy is under quarantine. 4,500 deaths worldwide in 2 months. Yeah, name a flu doing that.

Trump turned away testing kits from the WHO in JANUARY. JANUARY! Trump naturally blamed Obama because Obama. Despite the fact that Trump disbanded the Pandemic Response Team. And Trump of course comes out and says, “who would have foreseen this virus happening?”

Gee, maybe the Pandemic Response Team. He’s fucking retarded. He can’t manage a Dunkin Donuts.

I’m sorry, but I’m way past what a shitty president he is. He is a worthless self-aggrandizing scumbag who looks out for himself always and forever. EVERYONE connected to him is either under indictment, in jail, or has written a book about what a self-aggrandizing piece of shit he is.

Mick Mulvaney is next on the Trump hit piece book. He had created a cottage industry of books written about his administration.

      • djloo27 said, on March 12, 2020 at 4:14 pm

How did Roger Daltrey get his hands on all those testing kits?

      • chipower9 said, on March 13, 2020 at 10:16 am

The fact that covid-19 made it to US soil is not trump’s fault, but his approach (or lack thereof) over the past two months absolutely are owned by he and his administration. They have stepped all over their dicks on this. Yep…they own a LOT of the current issues. This is just one more indication of what a stupid fuck trump truly is…

  14. willedav said, on March 12, 2020 at 12:41 pm

None of this is good for those who work at pro sports venues. Ostler in Chron said today Warriors employ 1500 part time workers. Wonder how many are at the O on game day?

  16. Winder said, on March 12, 2020 at 2:55 pm

Trump is a pathological liar yet people continue to believe what he says. Unbelievable.

I guess now is the time for all injured players and players still trying to hone their craft to take the time to get better. Maybe football can start on time.

    • Flavor said, on March 12, 2020 at 3:30 pm

Most people don’t believe want he says.

  17. zumiee said, on March 12, 2020 at 3:31 pm

I saw several pundits on TV that said something pretty insightful. They said that Trump keeps seeing this as an economic problem instead of a health problem. And the stock market is reacting to the fact that he’s not getting the concept about the health problem, and that’s what’s causing a lot of the uncertainty in the market. The market wants a laser-like focus on the health issue.
As a sociopath, Trump isn’t wired to be concerned about other people regarding their health, though. It’s just not in him. The pundits were hoping somebody else in the administration could take the lead and show some real concern about the health of the American people. I’m not sure Pence has it in him either. The GOP has spent several years now weeding out their more empathetic members. Jeb Bush got blasted by the GOP for showing some empathy about refugees at the border, for example.

    • chipower9 said, on March 13, 2020 at 10:20 am

Pence DOESN’T have it in him, either. He is as much a dipshit as trump.

  18. alleykat69 said, on March 12, 2020 at 3:47 pm

Yeah even the happiest place on earth Disneyland and Adventure Park are closing down Saturday due to the Coronavirus thru atleast the end of the month.

  19. zumiee said, on March 12, 2020 at 3:48 pm

Regarding the NCAA, so there’s no men and women basketball champions this season? Is that correct? Bummer.

  20. zumiee said, on March 12, 2020 at 3:51 pm

Of all the sports, basketball players would be about the most vulnerable, other than wrestling, I guess. In basketball, the players are often in contact and close proximity, obviously, with nothing protecting them from virus transmission.

  21. alleykat69 said, on March 12, 2020 at 3:59 pm

In football it’s the offensive linemen against the defensive lineman that are the most vulnerable I would assume…

    • zumiee said, on March 12, 2020 at 4:15 pm

Which raises the issue of the next football season. Will the teams be able to start their summer camps on time?

  22. zumiee said, on March 12, 2020 at 4:17 pm

A lot of music festivals are being cancelled or postponed. A lot of music acts are having to postpone tours, which is tough for the smaller acts that need the income on a yearly basis.

And King Crimson isn’t in the RNRHOF. Or Jethro Tull.

Then again Roger Maris still isn’t in the BBHOF.

    • unca_chuck said, on March 13, 2020 at 8:31 am

Don’t kid yourself. I’m sure the owners will push the clock backwards based on the number of days missed.

And in not-so-shocking news, the 49ers closed Levi’s stadium and team facilities in Santa Clara until further notice.

      • Flavor said, on March 13, 2020 at 8:41 am

they can’t really push the clock back, mlb games don’t translate to snow very well. They’re already up against it in cities where snow hits Nov 1ish.
Ok dudes, I been throwing up since 8pm last night. Sick as a fucking dog. It finally stopped. Still, probably won’t get a thread going till later today. For now, just roll with this one.

      • unca_chuck said, on March 13, 2020 at 10:32 am

They’ll start the FA clock in August instead of May is what I’m saying. I’m not saying they’ll play a full slate of games.

      • James said, on March 13, 2020 at 2:52 pm

I am at the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles. You would never know there is a global pandemic taking place. Though I did notice a significantly fewer amount of Asian guests at the Pai Gow tables. Normally they have about five tables packed to the gills. Last night there were just two, with plenty of room between. Though one very luck gent at the hold em table did manage to hit a Queen on the river to take me out with Queens and Tens over my Jacks and tens.

dude I am 100% supportive of gambling as you know but maybe it’s a good idea to stay out of the casinos for a bit and I can’t believe I’m questioning that but I really think it’s the prudent thing to do.

  37. unca_chuck said, on March 13, 2020 at 11:49 am

These next two-three weeks will determine if this spreads like wildfire, or contains itself. Based on how many people are prudent with their cleanliness habits.

This basically comes down to how well people minimize the passing of the virus. Italy is a prime example of things getting way out of control. On Tuesday in Italy 200 people died.

Thank God our administration downplayed it for 6 weeks while turning down help from the WHO.

Ahhhh, derp. I finally got your Roger Daltrey post, DJ!

The many Profs who were reluctant to embrace technology more enthusiastically are having a reckoning, although there isn’t widespread panic or resistance, at least not yet. A little like Bruce Jenkins being forced to face the undeniable logic and advantage of using the right data. Not entirely unsatisfying to witness.

They lost neutral site preseason game in Bahamas to at that time undefeated Michigan, and on road to BYU. funny but USF, no better than 4th best team in league, gave them hard time twice including semis of WCC tournament.

thoughts on what Boras said, advising players to stay in camp? More isolated, with monitored health care available, plus ability to hit/throw and work out. Yanks Pads Tigers in on this; haven’t een anything about Giants/A’s.
Also if/when MLB decides to play again some form of abbreviated ST would have to take place before real games could start.
