A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Rona Hitting Home

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 31, 2020

Sooooo we are taking this shit up a notch at Casa de Flavor. We got a call yesterday that my daughter’s boyfriend’s mom just test positive for The Rona. They aren’t testing him or any of the rest of his family, the doctor just said “you’re probably going to get it so everyone there needs to self quarantine now.” His family is now totally quarantined in their house just waiting for the mom to get better and the rest of the family to get this shit.

Luckily, Katie and I went into quarantine on March 13 so she hasn’t seen him for 2+ weeks (and believe me I was dealing with a lot of shit from her about that). We spoke to her Dr. who said she is probably ok but we still don’t know enough about a-symptomatic people, especially teenagers, and how long they shed the virus. Katie can’t get tested unless she shows symptoms.

Anyway, this is your Flap Public Service Announcement to remind everyone to take social distancing seriously. Quarantining when we did likely saved us all from this—at least for now.

Oh that’s awful. Hope Mom comes out of it and rest of her family and yours of course are OK. Good you did what you did early on.
And thx for the message, for all of us to stay safe and stick with program til things calm down.

Luckily my godson Missus had their second child week before last, everyone is ok and out of hospital. They can both work at home and have been for some time, and other child is just under 4 so she’s used to being in (tho gym class every week is out) yada yada.

Wow. That sucks, Flav. I hope everyone gets through it all in good health, and that it does not touch you and Katie. This shit is real.

Man, I really cannot wait for the day our lives return to some sense of normalcy.

This all has been a good reminder that all of those things we take for granted (going out for dinner and cocktails, sports events, going to get a fucking haircut…life as we normally know it) can be blown away in a minute by something deadly and invisible like Rona. This all has caused me to reflect and truly value all of those things that I have taken for granted in the past. There are no guarantees. Mother Nature always has the reigns, and calls all of the shots. We are but pawns in her master plan.

Be safe and stay healthy Flap Universe.

PaulInAsia – I saw your post about being ostracized while trying to visit a pharmacy. That shit is happening here in the good ol’ USA, where people get froggy over someone showing up with New York license plates, etc. Good luck over there on the other side of the world.

Dang dude, I hope y’all at Casa de Flav continue to stay safe and sane.

Great lists yesterday, a couple of guys I want to give props to. Royce Clayton, I loved that guy, I always thought he had Larkin’s skill set. He never took it to the next level but I rooted hard for that guy. A couple of guys I wished we had gotten earlier were Ellis Burks and the Big Cat. Both of those guys seemed to be a class act and they brought spark. Glad to see mentions of Swifty Bill, Caveman and Shooter but I have to include props for Nen who threw his arm out for us.
Also glad to see Kevin Mitchell make so many lists, he was one of my all time favorite Giants. Man, I remember a ball he hit at ST in 1989, just a complete skyrocket into the big Arizona sky. That thing took so long to get over the fence that I’m pretty sure the Ofers started a card game while they waited for that thing to come down.

All y’all stay safe out there.

    • djloo27 said, on March 31, 2020 at 8:35 am

I was starting to think 1989 could be a special year when Mitchell hit a GW opposite field homer against the Cubs. Off the bat, it looked like a routIne pop up, but it just kept going and going.
No matter what they say, the Giants FO could not have expected the production they got out of Mitchell and Kent…

      • Bozo said, on March 31, 2020 at 9:15 am

From ST to the delayed WS, 89 was not only a special year but a very long one. I haven’t been to Spring Training since, will have to go again someday.

    • chipower9 said, on March 31, 2020 at 10:00 am

Good call on Clayton, John. I saw him play when he was with the Giants AA team…at that time the Shreveport Captains, while I was down there with the Air Force. I too always liked him, and rooted hard for him.

    • willedav said, on March 31, 2020 at 10:29 am

wow forgot all about Galarraga thx man. Smooth glove and a big stick. He’s still guy that has hit one closest to the glove in LF I do believe.

      • willedav said, on March 31, 2020 at 2:10 pm

#6 um flav and SD two of mellowest even keel guys you’d ever be fortunate enough to meet. However, at 6-5 each and armed with golf clubs, not the kind to be riled. surf dudes would wind up like pinatas.

#7 Puig jersey dude getting within mile of Flav’s daughter would be in for similar fate as surf dudes.

  5. alleykat69 said, on March 31, 2020 at 10:16 am

Yeah that’s a rough one for sure Flavor.Hope the mom recovers without any complications. You were smart shutting down Romeo&Juilet for awhile though, and your timing was spot on when it was first breaking out, I know it wiped out my hip surgery on 3/20 cause of it, 😡Like any teenage daughter/son and I went thru it (the damm high school hormone years) the rebellious attitudes they give us, we do tend to forget we did the same shit to are parents too!
But yeah to all Flappers stay safe, stay inside as much as possible and Binge watch TV are spring clean the garage and house …

Good luck Craig. My kids are home for a bit from college. We were torn. better chance to be safe at home or in a rented house full of other colege students???
Only problem is I’m a physical therapist still working so if the family gets it it will very likely be from me. No pressure right:(

    • chipower9 said, on March 31, 2020 at 1:20 pm

Stay safe. Those of you in the health industry and on the front lines are amazing. Wishing you and yours the best!

  8. Winder said, on March 31, 2020 at 12:21 pm

Flavor- best wishes for the family. These are strange days indeed. We are all having to learn to live with this virus and hopefully coming out the other side since many of us are old and have underlying conditions. I appreciate you coming out with a fresh topic daily. Nice way to spend some time.

  9. Flavor said, on March 31, 2020 at 12:45 pm

thanks for the kinds wishes, fellas. We have a Dr. in the family who currently practices at Stanford so we’re getting some pretty solid advice. Basically, because of when we quarantined, this risk is low. The only question is regarding these a-symptomatic people, especially teenagers. Once we get a better test that is more accessible and that yields results more quickly everyone will be in better shape. Unfortunately, that does us no good right now.

  10. dirtnrocksnomo said, on March 31, 2020 at 1:17 pm

Stay safe, Flavor. Lincecum’s no no in San Diego is being replayed again on CSN right now.

My brother in law is a Houston cop and he just posted the video of him being tested for Corona. He’s had a slight fever and headaches for the last couple of days. Holy shit that looks beyond uncomfortable. That swab went up about a good 4-5 inches into his nose for about 10 seconds.

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on March 31, 2020 at 2:25 pm

yea – they basically go through your nose to the back of your throat. gnarly.

I’m giving props out to Governor Gavin Newsome&SF mayor London Breed for putting out the shelter restrictions and mandatory in house policies (except for essential needs)faster than any other huge populated areas! The mayor of NY Chuemo (sp) was stupid as hell to have paused with a non chalant wait and see attitude .Well he waited and NY residents are paying for it with like 10 times more deaths then California!! Stay safe and inside Loo,GH, MacDog,Pawlie,Bozo and any other East Flappers I forgot…

  13. sfsarge said, on March 31, 2020 at 3:21 pm

Hey all. Craig. Hope you guys get through unscathed.

Sportdude: take care of yourself sir. I hope you are able to get all of the ppe you need to keep yourself safe.

All flappers near and far. Take care of yourselves. I’m really glad to see that everyone appears to be taking this seriously.

I had posted a lineup yesterday, but it didn’t post for some reason. It wasn’t that good anyway.

  14. unca_chuck said, on March 31, 2020 at 3:37 pm

Depending on the tests is a fool’s errand. They are not going to be available in any kind of timely manner. The vaccine even much much longer. Staying in place is the only way to deal with this, but it will destroy small businesses across the country and the world. Still and all, one more month of Stay in Place should greatly reduce the risk of spread. My daughter has a friend that works at the Highland hospital in Oakland, and they are eerily quiet. She said even emergency visits are way down (like down by half) as most people aren’t engaging in the usual stupid weekend activities.

What IS scary is they started testing in Hayward, and of all the people tested, 25% came back positive. Small sample size, sure, but that is way high. Staying home is the only way to keep the numbers down.

    • sfsarge said, on March 31, 2020 at 4:04 pm

Unca, that’s where i work. It is really eerily quiet here. I’m not complaining, but we’re slowly getting busier.

  15. willedav said, on March 31, 2020 at 4:55 pm

Friend of mine emailed she is happy BevMo delivers. Are people staying home drinking more or less do you think?
buddy of mine who doesn’t drive has been retired for awhile um kinda laments being shut inside with Missus 24/7. Normally like me he’d be out coaching b-ball on weekend somewhere and getting some exercise. Nice weather in south bay so I suggested a bike ride which hopefully solves both problems at least for little bit.

    • Bozo said, on March 31, 2020 at 5:21 pm

Drinking more? For the third time this week, i had to go and get a two week supply of booze.

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on March 31, 2020 at 5:28 pm

We just had a couple of cases of wine delivered. Good tip re BevMo. If this goes on too long I might have to break out the home brew kit.

    • wilcojoe said, on March 31, 2020 at 5:35 pm

My dad who lives in the East Bay was chatting with a beer delivery guy at his local Safeway. He said he has been slammed with increased deliveries to the supermarkets and liquor stores.

    • James said, on March 31, 2020 at 6:01 pm

I have 10 liters of barrel aged cocktails in stock: Manhattan, Vieux Carre, Palmetto, Negroni, and Martinez. Mrs. James gifted me with two, 2 liter oak barrels for my last birthday, so I’ve been producing pre-mixed cocktails en masse ever since. You can’t let the barrels go dry . . . .

      • alleykat69 said, on March 31, 2020 at 6:53 pm

I want to party with you and Mrs James!!🥃

I remember Clark as the first player I idolized who was younger than I was when he showed up.

      • Flavor said, on March 31, 2020 at 6:48 pm

my first memory of him, besides the bomb off Ryan, was that he was #22 and he was 22 years old. I remember at the time thinking that was cool.

      • alleykat69 said, on March 31, 2020 at 7:33 pm

One reason I can’t hate Kershaw, who idolized Clark and wears his number 22! Got to give him a knowing nod for that..

      • James said, on March 31, 2020 at 7:45 pm

If I’d never seen a replay of it, I’d still remember that HR — the swing, where it left the yard, the of-course-I-did-that-shit pointing in the stands.

      • djloo27 said, on March 31, 2020 at 7:52 pm

Kershaw has more respect for Clark’s #22 than the Giants ever did.
He was barely out the door when they entrusted it to the great Rikkert Faneyte,
To be followed by the list of luminaries below…

        David McCarty
        Osvaldo Fernandez
        Damon Minor
        Eric Davis
        Kurt Ainsworth
        Jose Cruz, Jr.
        Dustan Mohr
        Mike Matheny
        Matt Morris
        Keiichi Yabu
        Eli Whiteside
        Cole Gillespie
        Roger Kieschnick
        Dan Uggla
        Jake Peavy
        Christian Arroyo
        Andrew McCutchen

  18. alleykat69 said, on March 31, 2020 at 7:30 pm

Yeah I remember when they showed clips of Will Clark in college at Mississippi St and how I thought this guy has a swagger about him and a real sweet swing! Thank god they didn’t have him speak with that obnoxious back woods voice are maybe the Giants never would of drafted him.No I’m just kidding sort of,but the Gary Parks interview after clinching the pennant in the clubhouse was one for the ages for all rednecks watching..

  19. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 31, 2020 at 8:15 pm

Yeah Chuck, that was a first for me, the “no foreigners” experience. I know it’s happening in the US. People are just scared of anything or anyone *different* in these times.

Craig, it’s a bit of a painful waiting game now, but man, good for you that Katie hasn’t seen her bf in more than 2 weeks. Question: I haven’t seen much mention of it, do you have classifications for different levels of contact? They use this here to describe someone’s risk factor. Example, one of my students is now an F5 because her Mom became F4 when one of her colleagues at work got infected (F3) from her husband (F2). And so it follows like branches, and you are carefully tracked once you’re labeled with it. In your case, you’d probably be looking at Katie being F4 and you F5 if you hadn’t so wisely restricted her access to F3. Staying away from being an F is the best way to stay away from getting Fucked by this thing…

FYI, most cities/towns in Vietnam are now on lockdown, after just being on shutdown. Here in Hanoi, no leaving or entering the city til the 15th at least, and even no wandering from ‘hood to ‘hood within the city. Saigon just put that into place too. Basically, the whole country is locked down. I was scurrying to get out of the city and hole up in a shack near a beach somewhere but didn’t get out in time… Stay smart and safe, Flappers…

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on March 31, 2020 at 8:31 pm

There’s none of that here. Half of the states still weren’t taking it seriously until the last 7-10 days. The mixed messages coming from the Fed would be funny if the consequences weren’t so dire.

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on March 31, 2020 at 8:42 pm

Yeah, that’s what I was wondering, as in everything I’ve been reading and watching about what’s happening in the US, hadn’t seen any mention of it. Looks now like the messaging from the Fed has suddenly gotten a bit more serious. And the press conference ratings are through the roof………………..
