Hair Cut Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 3, 2020

Ok, this weekend the plan is to have my daughter give me a haircut. This is all assuming I can find a store open that sells clippers. I’ve never done this before. My hair is easy to cut, I normally go #1 on the sides, #4 up top. But I’m thinking of just going #1 all the way around to keep it simple.
Any advice from those who do this or have done this would be appreciated.

I will be looking for suggestions. My daughter typically cuts my hair, but her salon is closed due to the pandemic. I’m thinking just going shaggy for a month or two.

good luck Flav. This is gonna be problem in another month for lot of people.

Just heard Bill Withers died of heart trouble at 81. Saw him live at old Berkeley Jazz Festival at Greek Theatre.
Don’t have any of his recorded music except for Just the Two of Us on a Grover Washington cd. Beautiful tune with steel drums and two of Grover’s best solos ever. The one as song ends is just wonderful.

there is a vid I catch on youtube where Withers is doing Use Me live with the fabulous drummer James Gadsden plus another guitar bass and keyboard. Great tune.

Dude, #1 is like totally bald. You might as well just slather that dome with Barbasol and grab your razor after that.

  4. djloo27 said, on April 3, 2020 at 8:12 am

The most important thing is that you use good scissors and that they are almost razor sharp.
I personally recommend “Shear Guru” (Amazon has them)…

  5. dirtnrocksnomo said, on April 3, 2020 at 8:20 am

Make sure your hair is damp but not totally wet. If the person using the trimmer hasn’t done it before start with something like a #3 and work their way down. Less razor burn and it will come out more even all around. A comb (not a brush) for shaping around the ears helps a lot.

Rob Manfred is a gutless tool who continues to ruin baseball. He now says AJ Hinch&GM Lundnow (sp) 1 year ban will be time served so since their won’t be baseball (imo) these clowns were never really punished and are eligible to come back next year, which is unlikely but who knows?

story about Peavy running out there from Pavs on the nbcbayarea website, pretty funny. Gist of it was Peavy could hardly see anyway and was apparently still under influence of having some serious dental work done recently. When he went out there Ishi yelled at him to get away because Peavy didn’t realize he had homered.

I gave myself a haircut the other day. Used to buzz my boys regularly and would cut my own occasionally—especially in the summer months where I wanted it short. No scissors involved–electric clippers only.
16mm on top, 12mm in the intermediate areas and 5 mm on the sides and neck. This was not a total buzz cut and left a little bit of length on top. I’ll send you a pic.
Vertical movements with the clippers seem to work best. When I go horizontally I tend to end up with bare spots above the ears. Asked my daughter to clean up the back, but she said it looked fine!

    • Flavor said, on April 3, 2020 at 1:20 pm

how do the mm’s translate to #1, #2, #3 etc???? Also, what do you mean by horizontal vs vertical? Ear to ear is considered horizontal, right? front of head to back of head is considered vertical? I think I’m heading to Best Buy this weekend to buy the clippers so all the advice you guys have given today is huge, thank you.

      • Winder said, on April 3, 2020 at 1:37 pm

If you want to buy inexpensive clippers just to try it out Walmart usually has a few different types. If you want to get really good ones look online. I was told by an old friend who’s a dog groomer that what they used was the best you could get. Kinda makes sense since you figure all the hair on a dog.

      • Flavor said, on April 3, 2020 at 1:42 pm

I hate everything about Walmart. If I can go elsewhere, I will. I would just buy it at Amazon but these days we’re limiting anyone delivering anything to the house if possible. So, I’m gonna head out to Best Buy I think.

      • djloo27 said, on April 3, 2020 at 2:59 pm

I know there are a few gamblers here. In the Aug. ’62’ issue of baseball digest there’s a section of ‘how to win bets on ballgames’ maybe still relevant or maybe not. I don’t gamble much.

Forgot Ishi misplayed a ball that went over his head in LF that accounted for Cards first run. Jay sliced one Ishi misjudged for a double that scored one and left guys on 2b/3b with one out but bum got Holliday to pop out to short CF and K’d Peralta. Jay was hitting .500 of Bum too, a LH.

If we receive any package now from Amazon, which is rare, I take it to my garage and spray it with a bleach/water solution and leave it overnight, then open it. And trash the box immediately into the recycle bucket outside. Amazon workers are coming down with Covid19 all over so you know there are people carrying it in these warehouses, and the virus can live on surfaces for a couple of days. I sterilize whatever the inside packaging is, too, before I open that to get to the item. Depending on the item, I wipe that down, too. The warehouse workers are not using any gloves, no masks, is what I hear. Needless to say, we’re not doing too much Amazon…

  20. snarkk said, on April 3, 2020 at 3:23 pm

So, for weeks we’ve been told don’t wear any masks unless you think you have the virus, because it stops you from spreading it. Wearing one supposedly would not protect you much, if at all, from acquiring the virus. Now, we’re being told wear a mask when you’re out, regardless. Even if you make your own out of an old T shirt. I said a few days ago a billion+ people in Asia are wearing masks all the time, why aren’t we? I don’t know how more F’d up this country’s response could be to this situation…

Amazon is also hiring like crazy. with millions out of work, it’s a paying gig opportunity people will take a look at.
Friend of mine who has spent 19 years as top sales rep for major high end luggage firm just got fired (not laid off) along with her boss. She’s not even 60, is used to working and quite good at it. She asked me, what is my next move? And recognizes industry is going through some hard times right now since travel isn’t happening.

She’d talked about walking away in a couple years and maybe driving for Lyft to pick up some $$$. those guys are starving right now, and I don’t see how that is very safe job either–how do you know anything about the random people who sit in you car?

  23. willedav said, on April 3, 2020 at 4:28 pm

One of those things you could watch forever. Wacha had walked Belt of 4 pitches and got the curse of the pitching coach visit to mound then threw 2 more balls before Ishi sends crowd home happy.

  24. sandog said, on April 3, 2020 at 4:34 pm

@Flav–by vertical motion I mean an upward motion toward the ceiling. Not so important on the longer parts, but around the ears it is.
    16mm= #5
    12mm= #4
    5mm= #2

I live out in the sticks and there is a giant Wal Mart on the outskirts of town on the way to my house.
It’s damn near the only place I shop. Prices are great and I can get milk, produce, auto parts, ammo, sporting goods, school supplies, hardware, garden supplies all under one roof. Big fan.

  25. zumiee said, on April 3, 2020 at 4:51 pm

The Morse HR is such a great Giants moment. The big situation, his reaction when he hit it, and the huge momentum shift in the game.
The Ishi HR, too, of course.
A key moment, too, was a ball deflecting off of the end of Pablo’s glove right to Crawford. It took the wind out of a Cards’ rally in the 8th. The kind of break the Giants got during the 3-in-5.

K and K doing simulation Giants Dodgers home opener at the O. Belt just doubled home a run off Buehler but Giants are down 5-2. Hamilton is in CF and retrieves a triple by Turner off Jarlin Garcia 6-2 and then Seager lines base hit past Yolmer Sanchez 2b and it’s 7-2. Game moves really fast
And Wilmer Flores homers, his 3rd of the year. Kinda fun gotta admit.

    • djloo27 said, on April 3, 2020 at 7:38 pm

  30. willedav said, on April 3, 2020 at 7:38 pm

this is mlb the show. Posey just homered to LF off Ross Stripling and it’s 7-5. Dodger OF is Pederson Betts and Bellinger.

  31. willedav said, on April 3, 2020 at 8:00 pm

this is pretty funny. I could watch this–they usually only show 2 pitches of an AB and really quick btw pitches anyway. Kenly Jansen looks lot like LeBron James here. Dick singled off him in 9th but Jansen gets 4 out save 10-7 Dodgers. Pence hit PH 2 run HR earlier but Muncy had a slam off Smrdz that set tone. whole game only took an hour I think.

  32. zumiee said, on April 3, 2020 at 8:26 pm

not a vid game person at all but watching the play station version of Giants/dodgers yesterday was fun. It is on nbcsports.com/bayarea website, full game via youtube. Entire 9 innings in 52 minutes.
Couple things–graphics on close up of players are little off–Roberts looks way more black than half Asian in the face. Also the new triples alley became doubles alley even for Belt as he blasted one that rolled to 415 sign.
They did show guys warming up in the new bullpens too out behind CF.

I might go watch some of the start, which spoiler alert did not go well, right now. K and K call the game and yes Amy G is there too.

Kinda funny to look at projected Giants LU from yesterday
    Yaz RF
    Belt 1b
    Posey C
    Dick LF
    Longo 3b
    Crawford SS
    Hamilton CF
    Y. Sanchez 2b
    Smrdz

No Dubon or Davis for home opener? According to the show stats to that point in season Longo Craw and Posey were all under .200, Belt was over .300. Posey did homer in this game. Flores who came off bench hit his 3rd HR. Hamilton went 0-4 but did score Giants first run. Have a feeling if things ever get going he is in..

Yeah, the news is pretty mind numbing full of opinions that are presented as facts. Then there’s the total bullshit. It is way more numbing than Netflix, prime, or hulu, and that is saying something.

cbs site story says NBA looking at just cancelling season/playoffs. One of the reasons is also addressed in story I read on MLBTR regarding difficulty of playing games in isolated area even without fans.
Major issue would be that everyone involved–both teams coaches umps TV and media plus all support staff would ALL have to be tested and results known immediately prior. Given chronic shortage of test kits across nation how could this possibly happen amid shitstorm of who can get access and quick results?

Been watching old videos of the Giants thru the years. Man those Giants jerseys of the late 70’s and early 80’s might be my all time favorites, even though I was always partial to the Will Clark ere block letter uni’s. The orange alternate jersey they wear now is ok but not quite the same. Really wish they would bring those back, especially the white jersey with Giants in script.

“As the sports world remains frozen due to the coronavirus pandemic, the NBA reportedly isn’t optimistic it will be able to restart and finish its season.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst went on “SportsCenter” on Friday and gave an update on the league’s current line of thinking and the realistic possibility that basketball won’t return until next season.
“It’s been a bad week,” Windhorst said in regards to the feeling the season might not be salvageable. “I think there was optimism about progress a week ago, and some things that have happened this week have turned it south about what could happen. A big factor was what happened in China, where they halted the return of their league and one of the big reasons was they really believed that if they just tested the players’ temperature all the time that it would. The Chinese are finding that asymptomatic carriers are causing maybe a second wave in that country. They have just slammed the breaks on sports.
“The talks between the players union and the league this week — I’ve talked to both sides of this issue — and it is clear the NBA is angling to set up a deal that enables them to shut the season down. Now, they don’t have to do that yet, and the way they are negotiating, they are leaving themselves an option either way. But they are not having talks about how to restart the league, they are having financial talks about what would happen if the season shuts down and I think there’s a significant amount of pessimism right now.””

Since getting food for the house is not a quick trip to the store anymore. Making sure there is about two weeks worth at hand needs a list. So you ask what people really want to keep em happy. It got me to thinking what i really want and started thinking about the food i really loved as a kid and early adult. If they were still available I would pick up a box of Team Flakes, Gebhardts Tamales (in the can), and some Gaucho cookies. I truly loves those products. I have tried to find something similar but no luck so far. Anyway, just thought I would share that.

All things considered, Californians’ behavior overall has been good during these trying times. The governor shut down a lot of the state before all the other states did (and some still haven’t), and that has been pretty effective vs. the virus, so far, considering Calif. has more than 10% of the population of the entire nation.

Found this gem in a box I hadn’t opened in 10 years: “Willie’s Time” by Charles Einstein 1989.
He talks about a game where Mays threw out 3 Dodgers in same game and would have had a fourth (in other words thrown for the cycle) had not Tito Fuentes missed a tag. Game was May 17 1966 Giants lost 2-1 in 13.
Mays gunned down willie Davis at 3b Maury Wills at plate and Don Drysdale at 1b.

Wills was actually nailed at the plate by McCovey on the relay from Mays. The other 2 assists were direct.
I think Marichal started 10-0 in ’66. Probably highly motivated by the ’65 debacle.
        He was raking, too…

A Subway in Calgary was taking a major backlash for advertising a sign; “Buy 2 sandwiches and get a Covid mask for free”! Subway has since apologized and had the sign removed..

1971 Giants won 90 to win West only to be undone by Bob Robertson and Pirates in playoff.
Mays, at age 40 and in his last season as Giant, had .907 OPS 112 walks and stole 23 bags vs. 3 CS. 6.3 WAR.

Bobby Bonds, age 25, hit 33 HRs 102 rbis slash line .288/.355/.512 for .867 OPS. Stole 26 bags 6.7 WAR.

I never got the feeling these guys were really friends. In fact, based on what I’ve read, I don’t think Mays was especially tight with any teammate except Monte Irvin. And that includes McCovey…

He was close with 2 managers (Durocher & Franks) and one owner (Joan Payson/Mets)…

Yeah as much as Mays still in my book the best player ever,he was a recluse, and never quite got the fans total support in SF like when McCovey burst into the scene who was much more approachable to the media.NewYork was his city’s owned along with Mantle..

So when are they going to win a simulated game, aren’t they 0-7 to start the season?

Cutch got 6 (!) hits in that game. Who remembered that?!

    • Macdog said, on April 4, 2020 at 10:44 pm

I don’t remember Cutch getting 6 hits overall as a Giant.

What a fascinating box score from that ’66 Giants-Dodgers game. Giants got 11 hits in 9 innings off Drysdale, and 14 overall — all singles — and got only 1 run. McCovey kept getting on base, but they couldn’t get him in. Killer DP by Haller in the 4th. Big chance wasted in 6th with 1st and 2nd and 1 out when McCovey got picked off 2nd and then Haller hit a single. Dodgers let Drysdale bat to lead off the 9th trailing 1-0 — he struck out, They rallied to tie it anyway. McCovey struck out with the bases loaded and 2 out in the 11th. And after the 3 Mays throw-outs, Giants end up losing on a throwing error by Ollie Brown in the 13th. Giants finished second to Dodgers by 1.5 games. Ouch.

Last day of the season Jints needed to beat Bucs and pray Phils swept L.A. That woulda left them tied in the LC and they would have had to win a makeup game the next day (don’t know against who) to force a play-off.
Giants tied the Pirates in the 9th on a hit by Ozzie Virgil and won it with 4 in the 11th after Lindy McDaniel escaped dire trouble in the 10th. Meanwhile Bums drop the opener and Giants need Bunning to beat Koufax in the nitecap. Down 6-0, Phils rally for 3 in 9th but fall short. I had to look up the details, but I remember that day real well – especially trying to get updates on that last game. There’s a an old clip somewhere of the Giants listening to the radio broadcast in silence as the season went down the drain…
