NFL Draft Time!
Jesus Christ, ok, let’s GO! Something sports related that’s not the Outlaw Golf Tour or horse racing. Like it or not, we get to watch Roger Goddell in his jammies announce the NFL draft from his basement. I, for one, can’t wait.
I read an interesting, easy to understand article this morning about the economy. Interested in your take, should you have one:
https://www.ccn.com/3-reasons-why-the-dow-will-crash-below-20000-in-2-weeks/
If you’re interested in baseball news this was just penned by the commissioner, it was set for immediate release and contains critical information. lulz
yeah finally, non retro sports stuff. Hey I watched the Giants game vs. brewers June 15 last year and enjoyed it but this is live happening right now.
Loo thanks for that boxscore from Campaneris debut, another guy who homered first time up. He had fine career with A’s and I always liked him. Gowdy said during the 1973 WS game I watched the other night he had led the AL in steals 6 times. Different era when no one cared about OPS of middle IF
Twins had powerful lineup; Killebrew homered, his 34th already late july. He was from Idaho and the guy who taught and coached me in my first b-ball team ever in middle school grew up near him.
It takes a while to get through, and the interviewee’s affect makes him seem like he coulda been on trial at Nuremberg, but here’s something Gianthead and Loo can get behind:
well, yeah, but: “Part of that approach relies on having access to one of the world’s best-functioning health-care systems. At no stage did Sweden see a real shortage of medical equipment or hospital capacity, and tents set up as emergency care facilities around the country have mostly remained empty.” Bloomberg.com piece on Sweden’s approach from a few days back.
Turns out due to a recent autopsy that the first USA cases of CV19 appeared in Silicon Valley. The first death was that of a 57 year old woman who worked for a tech company (semiCs, apparently–it’s as yet unnamed) that has facilities and offices in Wuhan. Someone in the company went to Wuhan and then came to the Valley and the Shadow appeared. The County health director in Santa Clara Valley, Sarah Cody, picked up on a problem soon after that, although no one id’d the first victim at the time. Cody spread the word in the Bay Area. All cities and counties here immediately shut down. And look at our numbers now. Res ipsa loquitur, as an intelligent judge would say.
Yes, they have other advantages, too. The antibody tests should provide statistically valid data well before next April, when he suspects the flattening will be of the mortality percentages across regions.
That announcement from baseball is hilarious. Thanks for the huge update…LMAO.
I am pumped about the draft, more-so than usual, and probably because like all of you, I am starving for anything sports-related that is live.
Gonna be interesting.
^^ Ditto Chi!
I’m like a junkie needing a fix badly,Any kind of Sports that actually not old sports will get my juices flowing!! Go 49ers and grab a great player!!!
“mutually beneficial” lol. any idea how many minor league ballplayers plus coaches etc will be out of work this season, even before any contraction happens?
I was hoping the choice would spark outrage, but no:
https://www.mlb.com/news/sweetest-swings-for-every-mlb-team
Does anyone think of Trout as having a beautiful swing? His swing doesn’t seem distinctive to me.
I don’t think I’d even recognize Trout if I passed him on the street.
“Chinese consumers continued to spend considerably less on shopping, dining, and outdoor entertainment despite a lack of lockdown restrictions. If Americans follow the same pattern, the economic consequences will be disastrous. Nearly 70% of U.S. GDP is the result of household spending.”
I think a lot of people in the U.S. are not going to be in a hurry to spend a lot of money.
Quietly this week, a Republican-led investigation concluded that Russia did indeed interfere in the ‘16 presidential election, validating the Mueller Report.
Trump has never once admitted that the Russia attack happened, and certainly has done nothing to try to stop it from happening again in the ‘20 election. Just more treason from Trump, who is always subservient to Putin and Russia.
i truly believe Putin has Trump in his back pocket. They both want to be Kings of their respective countries.
I still don’t think we go WR at #13. If Kinlaw is there or one of the top OL’s we might pull the trigger. We desperately need some second and third rd picks. It wouldn’t surprise me if we trade both 1st rounders. I think we have one of the very best team of draft evaluators in the league. i trust what they are gonna do. Pretty sure both Lynch, and Shanny learned their lessons with the first draft. i hope we can trade a couple of players such as Thomas, and Goodwin, maybe even Coleman.
Winder I just don’t see why the 49ers would of traded Buckner to replace him with the same position player?
The bigger 1st pick should be a WR are a CB/OL all 3 positions need a major upgrade more imo.
A stud receiver to compliment Samuels, are a OL men cause Staley has little tread left, same with Sherman those are the immediate needs..
And no on WR Jefferson is Krueger smoking crack? He’s not nearly rated to go higher then Juedy,Lamb, are Ruggs…
Kat- it’s all about the money with this deal. Buc got 21 mil for 4 years. We couldn’t do that.
21 mil a year for 4 years.
“I read an interesting, easy to understand article this morning about the economy. Interested in your take, should you have one.”
Number 1, the “economy” is not the stock market, which this article is about. In other words, what happens on Wall Street usually has little to do with what happens on “Main Street.” Related to this, the stock market is more times than not – forward looking with regard to the economy. For example, remember what happened to the stock market prior to the Fed pumping trillions into the economy and the Congress, Senate and President signing unprecedented assistance bills to combat this pandemic? Prior to this happening, the stock market (S&P and DOW) hit lows that hadn’t been hit in years. I think at one point – late March (March 21st?) – the S&P was down to 2191, a level not seen since late 2016. At that point, prior to the liquidity pumped into the economy by the Fed and these bills being signed by Trump, the Market was reflecting a bleak future in our economy.
So 2 points, this minute, most analysts think that the stock market will have a “V” or “U” shape recovery, where it recovers it losses by the 1st quarter next year; and, the economy will likely take 2 years to recover. Is there a possibility that this doesn’t happen . . . That something worse happens? Of course. That’s why I am buying guns, i.e., prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Right?
this article is not just about the stock market. If Americans stop spending money the economy will be ruined. But thanks for your take.
Bring on the NFL draft.
Blade knows the market, but guns? Well, they actually hold their value pretty well. One of the strange things about that industry is that the products, if well treated, last for effing ever. No wonder the NRA is so fierce about convincing people that they need new and more deadly ordnance every year (fresh ammo every month — I know some gun . . . let’s say, enthusiasts . . . who stocked up on ammo during the Obama admin, because they feared a ban a coming).
Question for Blade: What about muni bonds? I inherited a bunch from my father a few years ago and I’ve held onto them mainly for sentimental reasons. (He loved that tax free interest.) Will the gov bailout now prevent defaults?
Xoot, which municipality issued the bonds, i.e., the city’s credit rating is important (the highest is AAA)? In other words, unlike Treasury Bonds, there’s some risk compared to Treasuries . . . That being said, the rates are usually much higher due to that inherent risk. Additionally, you didn’t mention the maturity date or has that already been met?
Thanks for the info on guns . . . I was wondering about that.
Almost forgot – related to maturity . . . The longer the maturity date, the better the yield (interest rate).
For similarly sentimental reasons, I’ve kept the same old bond broker my father knew. Last few times bonds matured (or, earlier, got called) he came up with some AAA rated replacements. At least one was “insured.” In toto the account kicks off an avg of about twelve hundred a month, so it’s not a huge deal. But I have securities fraud legal experience. For example, we successfully defended the City of Alameda against Nuveen after the city defaulted on some junk-scale muni debt during the great recession. (I spent a fun week in Chicago taking depos in the old Sears tower. My co-counsel, who rep’ed the underwriter, didn’t do jack shit but had a blast attending Cubs games with her AAA husband.) None of the munis I’ve got in the scrapbook look bad. But I’ve developed an interest in the subject recently.
As to guns, two things. There’s a clear reason why the old 30-30 Stix had in the closet still worked. And if you’re moving into the beautiful foothill country where the estimable Chuck/Chi resides, you’ve got it made. Take his lead. Get that Glock and a CCL. Then figure out the rest. (Nobody’s gonna mess with you — for a few years, anyway.)
There were probably bigger losses (by inflation) during the depression, but the biggest municipal bond loss I am aware of occurred either in 2012 or 2013, with the city of Detroit, when they filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy on $18 or $19 billion in debt. Creditors and insurers absorbed $7 billion in losses. They received between 15 and 75 cents on the dollar, depending on the type of bond.
No idea about the 2 or was it 3 cities in California that went bankrupt? Zumiee might know, as I think one of the cities was near where he lived.
Xoot, which one would you suggest – right now I like the Henry Repeating Arms 30-30 and the less expensive Marlin 336. Chi? I am also looking at the pricey Winchester 1894. Thanks . . .
I think every cowboy movie or tv show that I ever saw featured the colt frontier and the Winchester model 1894. They were both one of the first firearms that I purchased. Great guns.
Blade, I’m not a hunter. I did have some experience in the 70s and I’ve spent a lot of time around real gun experts. (Also, some gun nuts. I know a wealthy 80ish lawyer who sits up in his house in Piedmont CA with a huge arsenal at hand, prepared for the swarthy hordes from Oakland he imagines storming up the hill toward his white picket fence. That ain’t livin’ to me.) So I’ve picked up some info about guns over the years. And some perspective, as I continually consider whether to get a gun.
We represented the City of Stockton in some complex commercial cases when they were booming — before the subprime implosion drove them into BK. I’m familiar with that sort of disaster. I just can’t figure out how the current bailout, which seems much more aggressive than the 2008-09 bailout, will support old muni debt. I understand that the fed and Treas are essentially underwriting new debt. But what about old debt?
Easy there, El Guapo…
I haven’t looked at 30-30 lever actions in some time. I am partial to the Winchester 1894. Love the ones with the octagon barrel. What is the price difference between it and the Henry and Marlin? I would suspect the Henry to be right there in price with the Winchester, as Henry makes killer rifles. I love the Henry 45-70 lever actions. Kick ass rifle, but they are not cheap.
how’d you like to have this jackass as an employee? So many people out of work and this guy is nappin’ on the job
Rough day for that guy.
Yeah, but what a fun co-worker!
Thx to Bozo for tip on rebroadcast of past Nola Jazz Fest concerts at http://www.wwoz.org. Listening to Toots and Maytals right now, with Bonnie Raitt and Rebirth Brass Band to follow. tmw features Aaron Neville, snooks eaglin Irma Thomas and DDB dirty dozen brass band among others. This is most enjoyable
Cool Willie, I know it’s making me smile. Hope ya caught Ella’s set, what a voice. Wish I was snacking on a cochon de lait poboy right now.
missed that one but man Bonnie raitt was awesome, Rebirth too.
definitely something to look forward to.
“If Americans stop spending money the economy will be ruined.”
This raises a whole other big issue, and that’s a reevaluation of our whole economic system. We have a type of capitalism that is destroying the planet, and therefore threatens our species’ very existence, along with all the other species.
Americans should not feel that they have any kind of obligation to return to the insane consumer culture we’ve had for the last 75 or so years, since the end of WWII. It’s not sustainable and never was. It took people like Rachel Carson, and a lot of the Baby Boomer youth, to challenge their parents on this. For a short while concern for the environment became a bipartisan issue, with Nixon signing the EPA into existence.
And then came the big Push Back with the Reagan years and the birth of the new conservative movement. To make his point, Reagan had to be an a-hole and take down the solar panels that Carter had installed on the White House roof.
Americans are finding a new way to live right now. Some will want to get back big-time to a huge consumer culture, but maybe a good amount of folks will explore ways to live simpler and more in tune with the well-being of the planet.
I totally get that a lot of people need to get back to work and earn paychecks. I’m not saying there are simple easy answers. But change is needed. The course the world was/is on is not a good future for life on the planet.
The younger voters are gonna have to be the ones who make a difference. Most older folk worry more about making it through the month.
Xoot mentioned the city in California that went bankrupt several years ago that I was aware of.
In the Central Valley, Stockton has the biggest reputation for roughness and toughness, going back to its early days as a port on the big extended delta of the SF Bay.
The city does have a great ballpark now for its Single A team, the Ports, who are an A’s affiliate. It’s as nice a Single A ballpark you’d find anywhere in the nation.
Fun fact: I saw Morrisey in concert in Stockton many years ago. He was performing at one of the theater venues. Very good show.
The City Manager who retained us also got that ballpark built. In the middle of construction, he made some huge change — cut out a second deck or reconfigured the outfield grass/stands or something. Consensus was that his decision was brilliant, but he pissed people off. That’s when I learned that there’s a whole school of management positing that good aggressive CMs should expect to last only 5 or 6 years in one place — until angry elected officials throw them out.
My younger son played LL on the Black Barons one year and the Crawfords the next. Those Crawfords unis were beautiful.
also where they did that Yang like experiment of handing out cash for those in need. Chron had couple stories on people with families that it helped quite a bit. thing is it also helps out local businesses and they are spending it on necessities, clothes medicine food etc. One gal had to drive long ways to visit her Mom and needed to get her car fixed to make that happen.
Vallejo filed for bankruptcy in 2008 iirc. They just don’t name teams like they used to.
As you all may know, teams in the Negro Leagues would often name their team after the local white team, and add the word “black” in the name. So the Negro Leagues had a team called the Atlanta Black Crackers.
Willie Mays played for the Birmingham Black Barons.
So much to discuss. I would not be surprised to see the 49ers trade down AND get Justin Jefferson with like Miami’s 18th pick if Miami desperately want someone at 13. I’d take any of the 4 WRs or Henderson the CB.
The thing about the economy is, people will continue to spend on essentials. After that all bets are off. The economy hasn’t been real for your average Joe since the 70s. The recovery for the past 12 years has given companies massive profits, but little relief for the middle class and lower because of wage stagnation. In the early 70s, families could still get by with one parent working. Nowadays, the norm is both all the time with no safety net. Reagan started the downward spiral by gutting every county and state-run program to help the poor at the cost of the arms race. Since then, the right has done more and more to disenfranchise the poor and tax the middle class to line their wallets and cry poverty.
The administration of course balis out corporations and craps on the people that would save the economy given the chance. And that is the rank and file being crushed right now. Companies over 500 employees as well.
If the administration and banks simply paid bills and covered rents/mortgages, people would be able to get by and spend a little to keep the economy going. When the rank and file stop buying, the economy crashes. Giving United and Chevron $50 trillion won’t do anything to prop up the economy. Giving every person out of work money to cover expenses would do a lot to keep things from spiraling way out of control.
Leroy “Satchel “Paige 1st minor league contract was with the Chattanooga Black Lookouts..
The pay was $50 bucks a month..
Over and over and over and over, for the past 300 years, societies have proven that with a strong middle class, you have a strong country. Weaken the middle class, and the economy has nowhere to go but down.
There needs to be a sea change in this country in how we deal with our own people. Also with how our elected officials represent US. Not corporate entities. Not special interests.
Citizens United is the FIRST thing that has to go. Given the structure of the SCOTUS, it seems more and more unlikely. Trump is stacking lower courts with as many craven fucking greed-heads as he can. He wants to get BOB PACKWOOD into a judgeship.
Later tonight at some point, the number of people killed in the U.S. by the coronavirus will pass 50,000. That’s been in about 1 1/2 months since the numbers started spiking.
In about a week or so from now it’ll probably be more than the number of U.S. soldiers who died in Vietnam.
It’s hard to fathom that.
Close to 50,000 deaths in one month.
Well, Cards chose not to reunite Lamb & Murray…
Huh. No WRs gone yet. And the Jets may go O line as well. I;m leaning toward Ruggs.
Niners now guaranteed one of those top 3 WRs…
Jets gotta go WR…
Man, that O-lineman is huge.
Flavor said, on April 20, 2020 at 7:52 pm (Edit)
well Kiper’s an idiot so my prediction is the Jags will take a defensive player with their first pick. One of the best angles to succeed in gambling is to just go the opposite of what the idiot predicts.
Nope, Protect Darnold. Damn. Ruggs? Weird last couple picks. We’d better get JJeudy.
Ruggs to Vegas.
I usually wouldn’t give an eff who the Niners take, but now you guys got me interested, haha.
Trade!
Damn. A good trade as TB is the only team the doesn’t need a WR. Not sure what we get in return. Wirf is going to the Bucs.
Niners could conceivably continue to trade down. My personal favorite WR is Jefferson from LSU. That dude is a baller.
wtf’s going on? Tampa didn’t need to move up to get a player the Niners didn’t want. Do the Niners just need more time now to make a pick after the Raiders took Ruggs? That can’t be it. Can it?
Niners could have taken Staley’s replacement. Wir. was projected as high as 4 and we could very well have taken him,
then why give Tampa the shot at him?
Wow
Happy?
Uh-oh . . .
fucking TERRIBLE pick
No. Kinlaw’s a stud. I thought for sure we’d go offense. But there are a lot of WRs out there still. They could trade up and get Jefferson. I hope.
it’s a terrible pick because we didn’t get the #1 WR we so desperately need. If we trade up for one this can be fixed.
Disappointing. He’s a great player and he;’ll fit right in, but we need offense.
Why didn’t we just fucking keep Buckner then? THREE stud receivers still on the board and they did that. FUCK!!!!!!!!!
Because Buckner got $72 mill. Kinlaw is dirt cheap.
Yes, I know, who fucking cares. WE NEED OFFENSE. WE NEED A #1 WR
They are trying not to be the Rams. I;m not thrilled with the move, but it is smart. Depending on what they do at WR.
Ballsy and potential smart pick. Jeudy, Lamb or Jefferson should still be available at 31.
Pick 31 is a long way away right now.
Maybe they’re gonna flip him?
Naah. He’s a stud who is gonna be a starter from day one.
No way Lamb falls that far. Jefferson, I’d trade up to get him.
Dreadlocks are dominating the first round…
There goes Jeudy.
If I were at a draft party right now I’d bet a bottle that Lamb and Jefferson will be gone before pick 31.
I had Lamb and Jeudy gone by 12.
My Cowboy fanatic friend is aching for McKinney…
They’ll take Lamb. Book it.
Bingo.
I hear the Niners traded 13 and a 7th round pick to tampa for 14 and a fourth round pick. That’s not very compelling.
Considering we weren’t gonna take who TB got, it was. We got who we wanted and got a 4th round pick for one of our 7th round picks.
I don’t know if the Niners got what they wanted with 13. They may have been scrambling after the Raiders pulled the Ruggs out from under them. Probably not, though. That’d be too simple. I just wanted to write that.
Hah! It[s possible that they bailed on WRs after the Raiders rolled up the Ruggs.
The young lady in the slinky black dress and spiky heels next to CD Lamb wins NFL draft internet style contest.
I like Kinlaw pick. I’ve said all along imo D is bigger issue than O. Plus there are still wrs out there. I’d get a corner next so they can think about Sherman moving to safety soon.
And Suzy Kolber’s a wreck…
yeah she looked like aging stoner. so is ESPN lead guy’s pinstripe suit with the shirt/tie.
Even Namath would be turned off…
MINAJ???
Haha.
20X smoother than Baer
Lol~!
That’s how Tyreek does it…
i love the Kinlaw pick.
This round is going off the rails…
Now that Philly passed on Jefferson, do you trade up for him? I would. Jefferson and Kinlaw would be a damn good first round.
Every time they show WR highlights, there’s at least one clip where these college DBs are about 20 yards off the LOS.
Yeah and it’s usually my Longhorns.
Hah!
Damnit!
There goes Jefferson. The Vikes beat the Niners at something
.
this is infuriating. Ok, so we got Kinlaw who’s younger and cheaper than Buckner. He could easily be much worst than Buckner too. Almost no chance that he’s better. And we are now still stuck with an absolutely shit WR core. Huge whiff by Lynch and Shanny today….
You said that about Bosa last year. My one hope is Hurd gets healthy. They have Taylor as well. ANd there are still a shitload of good WRs out there,
Hate to say it but I think we take a CB at 31.
Yep. Denzel Mims is the next guy I’d like.
Then you could call him “Our Mims” after the great half-sister to Alydar…
When did being close to your family become the most admirable quality in the world?
when someone is gonna get paid?
I’d love to know how the backroom calls go. Can the Niners call tampa and say hey another team wants our 13th pick and they’re aiming at that OL we know you want. They’re only offering a couple of late round picks though. What can you offer?
I mean, is the nfl involved in clearing trade discussions at all?
They can do whatever they want. Remember Ditka was coaching the Saints and traded his entire draft for Ricky Williams?
I saw Mims quite a bit this year, including in person against Iowa State in Waco. If Baylor’s QB was even remotely decent, I couldn’t imagine the type of year he would have had.
I’m hoping against hope we get him, Joe.
Why for years the 49ers need the stud receivers and they have consistently filled the roster with retreads?
Man they had the pick of the litter with All Pro future receivers(minus Ruggs taken by the fuck you Raiders)and they go DL where they still had plenty of depth!
You never have enough guys to strike a premature victory pose in the end zone…
Traded up!
Ah ha!
Niners trade up! Aiyuk! 81″ reach!
complete overpay. This guy better be good or Lynch is going to look like a fucking dope for how he mismanaged this first rd.
I’d agree WR is position they can add too just don’t see offense as bigger problem than defense. TE running backs QB and O line are all very good to excellent and Shanahan does dang good job with it. I do think they traded up because guys they thought might be there at 31 were gone.
Still, if Niners have rougher season I don’t think it will be because of wide receivers.
He was projected at 1-2. Not a big overreach.
game 1 1974 WS on sports channel. Scully doing it with Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek from Dodger Stadium vs. A’s. Dodgers scored 11 runs in 5 games, Fingers won MVP as Oaktown took third in a row.
WR Brandon Aiyuk 81 inch wingspan at 6ft tall ??
Well I hope they just didn’t wing this pick!
I guessing they’re banking on getting hopefully a lot of last year high pick Jalen Hurd to contribute now as well..
My little magazine ranks him the 5th best WR in the draft (they have Jefferson 8th).
He also returns kicks, but failed a physical before the Senior Bowl…
Well, we got someone who can line up at the X and cause some problems. He ain’t blazing fast but he is a deep threat.
man the nfl sure is kissing Raider ass tonight. At least we haven’t had to see the owner. The league must see a big payoff by moving into Las Vegas.
Didn’t see that one coming.
All I’ll say is we gave up a pretty good haul to get this WR. One who may have still been there at 31. Tee Higgins and Chase Claypool are still on the board, as well as Mims.
He’d better be good.
That’s what they thought about WR Jenkins from Illinois Major Bust!!
Dodgers of 1974 still had Manny Mota, and Von Joshua plus Willie Crawford and Lee Lacy and the all hated team IF Garvey lopes Russell and Cey. Stated Joe Ferguson in RF vs. Holtzman the LHP, the late J Wynn in CF.
If you don’t think there’s an obesity problem in America, you’re not paying attention…
Who you callin’ fat?
“Aiyuk has size, speed and is a natural pass-catcher who plays with good energy but he must improve physicality to handle contested catches. He can be slick and instinctive to separate out of stems and turns, but getting in and out of standard route breaks tends to limit his effectiveness. He needs more polish, but his ability to create yards after catch could get him some early reps while he’s still developing. He has the potential to develop into a WR3.”
