Ayucky Pick
Rice, Moss, Carter, Owens, Largent, Monk…..Aiyuk?
Our newest Niner name doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue when you think of great wide receiver names. Am I the only one who thinks his name needs more letters?
Look, in the age of Covid it’s easy to be negative. And I got there very quickly after round 1 of the NFL draft.
I am not an NFL expert. I have no idea if Jeudy, Lamb or Jefferson will become an NFL star. But there is a great likelihood that one of them will. And I don’t think there’s anyone out there who thought Aiyuck would go as early as 25 nor is there anyone out there who thought the Pac 12 was a powerhouse conference. So not only did we trade up for probably no reason but we passed on 3 other dudes who all might be better than him.
And this Kinlaw thing, sure he’s cheaper and younger than Buckner. But there is no guarantee he’ll be even close to as good. We already had Buckner. If this was the plan why didn’t we just keep Buckner and ditch Armstead? Pay up for the quality you already HAD.
Whatevs, maybe it all works out. I was certainly wrong about the Bosa pick. But I was right about the Solly Thomas pick. I guess we’ll find out about these 2 new fellas if the NFL ever opens up again…..
Here’s something to be positive about: Some time over the next 24 hours The Flap will pass 2 million all time hits. Congrats, that is an enormous feat that Flappers around the globe should feel good about.
#1 strength of Pac 12 is non issue. Herbert the Oregon QB was taken 6th in entire draft. CBS site btw loves Aiyuck and thinks he will great fit in the offense. For Murphy to bring up the league and Stokes as a guy taken 8 years ago is just dumb.
#2 strength of NFC Division is a big issue. buckner was a conscious choice to dump off to acquire picks and save $$$ that can be used elsewhere to bolster roster. Kinlaw comes very highly rated and stopping the likes of Goff Wilson and rejuvenated Cardinals is Job 1. Defensive depth vs. type of QBs Niners are going to face 6 times (plus playoffs) is more important to me than adding one WR, elite or not.
#3 Samuels, the WR they took at #36 last season in second rounds, proved to be excellent pick. I can trust process as done by Lynch and Shanahan.
#4 Some of Niners best offensive players on current roster have been under radar types they have acquired elsewhere or found a way to utilize. Again, I can trust the process of how best to use Juscyk Mostert and acumen it took to see their value.
I was wondering as they approached the back end of the first round, I started to think maybe grabbing Jordan Love as our future QB would be interesting, especially when they then moved up their second pick. Don’t we already have this type of receiver in Deebo Samuel??? Wasnt Emmanuel Sanders the one they should have kept???
well, there was no either/or when it came to Samuels and Sanders. And no, Deebo is our best receiver aside from Kittle. Hey, the Aiyuck thing could work out. We’ll see.
I mean kept as a free agent. Sanders, Samuel, Bourne would have kept getting it done I think.
And I forgot about Hurd…Aiyuk wont hopefuly Ahh Yuk!! But also can see him doing kick returns and save Samuel…
Two million hits. Wow…that is bad ass.
On the draft, I was texting with a bunch of friends who I hang with regularly at the local brewery (pre-COVID-19). One is a Raiders fan. I texted right before the Raiders first pick “Ruggs.” Sure enough. I thought for sure, the Niners would snag Lamb. But no, true to his form, Lynch went D line, and I am good with that.
Regarding the Buckner trade, without that trade, there was no 13 pick yesterday, and no way they could afford Armstead and Buckner, and Armstead fit the cap better. I am good with that, and good with Kinlaw. I think Kinlaw will be a beast. And Lynch has said that to win in the NFL, you have to make the opposing QB uncomfortable, and for that reason the foundation of his team will always be the D line.
I also read this morning where Shanahan said that if Kinlaw was gone at 13, they would have taken Aiyuk there. Not sure if that is true, or just smoke.
I give them an A on the Kinlaw pick, and a B on the Aiyuk pick. Overall, A- or B+.
Bottom line, I trust Lynch and Shanahan, and am pretty damned happy with the picks.
Hey, it could be worse, you could be a Raider fan. Talking about reaches. My friend Kelly was PISSED at their second first round pick. All good IMO.
I’m good with the Kinshaw pick and don’t have an opinion re Aiyuk. I read somewhere that he’s hard to bring down and that’s something Shanahan highly values. Some sites are rating the pick a B+ and if he’s similar to Samuel that would be great. I’m just sort of surprised because they’ve got no picks until the 5th round now.
It wasn’t the 1st round but didn’t the 49ers trade up to get Pettis too?
Yeah, Pettis and Hurd (who i think will be a stud) are both busts so far. Hurd had a back injury he never got over, but how that plays into his future remains to be seen. He is very tall, strong, and tough. Great red zone guy who should be better that Bourne. Pettis is just blowing his opportunity.
Trent Taylor is a great slot/underneath WR but he can’t stay healthy either.
Armstead is also more versatile than Buckner, and was more cap-friendly to boot. Armstead regularly moves inside and out in different situations. Yeah, I wanted a Lamb, but I certainly see the upside in Kinlaw.
Aiyuk? We’ll see about that one. We needed and X WR and got one. He had a better yards-after-catch that even Ruggs. The kind oif guy Shanny loves. My only bitch about him is we could have gotten him with out trading up.
I think that was the first time I watched an entire round of a draft. Tells you how starved we are for sports. I actually thought ESPN did a decent job. Of course Goodell has the personality of my four walls. He did urge us to bring more booze tonight, so challenge accepted.
Lol, I too have been starved for some current sports stuff and I was truly jazzed about what the Niners did. It was fun.
Do we get a prize for being number 2 million🤪?
I wish I could offer one! It only updates once or twice a day unfortunately so there’s no way of knowing.
I was joking, but I’m that case knowing dude head nods all around.
I don’t have much of an opinion on the draft. Haven’t watched college football much in years and I really just don’t know much about these guys, I’ve never heard of either one of them. But, some fresh sports news is definitely welcome. I’m really enjoying reading the opinions of all those who have chimes in.
“my only bitch is that we could have gotten him without trading up”–Unca Chuck. This is a great point. Shanny saying he would have grabbed him if Kinshaw wasn’t available is peak hubris IMO. Goddamn, you can go after *your guys* and still at least have at least an educated guess on when others might draft him.
If he had drafted this guy at 14 I would have gone ballistic.
there is no brighter mind out there for the laypeople of the NFL than Greg Cosell so I will stand down now…..
Sure. You listen to him, but not me?
Shanny&Lynch have yet to draft a WR 1st in the years together so I guess it should not be a shocker.
They like to keep the defense as stout as possible and Kinlaw is a beast to keep that fearsome foursome going. One player who was pissed off was Von Miller who said:Damm the 49ers are greedy grabbing this stud, a true run stopper with long arms, ceiling is the limit, who he thinks the Broncos would of grabbed over Juedy.
Aichuk I don’t know much about, but they must think his overall game will fit in well. The player they need to see out their next year is Jalen Hurd , and find out if he’s one that can produce are will he be a bust!
To me end of the road for Goodwin, Pettis&Taylor so Aichuk and Hurd and Bourne are keys going forward..
One thing I learned last night was that it was such a nice thing to not hear the endless drivel coming from Kiper and the rest of the ‘EXPERTS’. Now we know that most of the bullshit is not needed. That was the most pleasant draft for me in a long time. I kept busy with other things with the draft in the background and just kept an eye on the progression. i know they won’t do the draft like this again unless we have another pandemic. The draft is all about the money. Next to the SB it’s an advertising dream.
There was an amusing article in the SF Chronicle yesterday about something that happened to Flannery a few months ago. I can’t find a link to the article that isn’t blocked by a paywall.
Similar to what happened to the Michael Keaton character in the movie Birdman, Flannery got locked out of a building while being naked.
Flannery said he sleeps nude (too much information) and he was in a hotel after one of his concerts, and in the middle of the night, he sleepily managed to open an exit door instead of the bathroom door (what?) and was locked out of his room, and then managed to get himself locked out of the entire hotel trying to avoid crowds of people. (He was sleepy or had several adult beverages or both?) So he’s nude, and in the parking lot, and there are people in the lobby of the hotel. So he goes to the pickup truck he had driven to the hotel, and thinks about just lying in the back of the truck for a while until the crowd dies down, but he sees that his wife’s yoga mat is in the back of the truck, so he wraps himself in the yoga mat, burrito-style, and just goes into the lobby and has to just wear it while some people stare at him. He gets a duplicate card for his room, but meanwhile one of the hotel guests had already called the police about the nude man in the yoga mat. So a police officer arrives and they all end up having a good laugh about it. The next day, Flannery told his bandmates, and they couldn’t stop laughing. They just kept cracking up. Flannery knew that once his embarrassment died away, he was going to have a great story to add to his other stories. He said his wife had warned him before to not sleep in the nude in the hotels.
I’ve had that dream only about 600 times!
Think was more than a few drinks….
Spent most of pre draft day reading through old novel I’d found, “Hunting Badger” by tony Hillerman. these are set in Navajo four corners territory near Shiprock, NM and are great inside look at their culture customs and scenic beauty (and harshness) of where and how they live. quite enjoyable.
Side note, Chron today had column on UCSF sending health care workers to Navajo nation (spread out over 27,000 square miles) which has seen devastating tolls of covid infections and deaths–48 deaths and 1200 cases among total population of 175,000.
By comparison all of SF which has 8 times as many people in a much smaller area has only 21 deaths.
I get the fact they wanted to get their guy, but you are right, Flav. To jump up from 31 to get him at 13 is ludicrous. I would have been furious as well.
I’m even bummed we gave Minn what we did as no one between 25 and 31 took a WR. And I don’t think Aiyuk was a must-have for anyone between us. Better WRs (Higgins, Claypool, Mims) were available and they didn’t go.
But as I said yesterday, Aiyuk is perfect for the 49er offense. He gets tons of yards after the catch, has great hands, and will be our deep threat as well.
Still and all, I like what they got. You do win this game in the trenches, and from all I’ve heard, Kinlaw is a maor stud.
I bet Aaron Rogers is pissed that I feel was a reach for Jordan Love.Rogers is in win now mode and I’m sure wanted more offensive help especially at WR.
He doesn’t need to wet nurse Love as his eventual replacement.Scratching my head at that pick and they moved up to get him..
I wanted a stud WR because I wanted the sexy pick. Drafting Kinshaw gave me flashbacks to Sabean/Evans blathering on about pitching and defense non stop and ignoring the offense. Sadly for them, that approach ultimately led to their demise. I do understand that winning in the NFL depends on defense and having a dominant DL is critical to that (though we still had one before we drafted Kinshaw). It’s just not exciting at all and we still need a #1 WR.
AK reminded me of Jalen Hurd. I had forgotten about him but if you ad Hurd to Kittle and Deebo and now we’ve got this Five Lettered Fellow in the mix as well…..ok, I’m coming back in off the ledge……
this guy to continues to be hilarious
Unrelated PSA – Snooks.
Now back to your Flap broadcast.
oh man his set was good so was Luther Kent and Wayne toups, two guys I’ve never heard before. Looking forward to DDB. champion jack Dupree tmw–had a few of his lps 45 years ago. the stuff I’m hearing on Jazz Festing in Place is just great.
Ken Stabler, from the grave, endorses trump’s lung cleansing theory:
The single most important play of all last year imo was made by Dre Greenlaw, 5th round pick out of Arkansas. Seattle had 8 plays to try and win and couldn’t do it and he got last and best one right in front of goal line as defense held on by barest of margins.
This set in motion the schedule that allowed Niners to stay at home, get favorable match ups they crushed once Saints and Seachickens were eliminated, and get to SB.
They will need that D to get back.
Speaking of “Draft”. . . DraftKings (DKNG) went public today on the NASDAQ. Just my take, but do NOT invest in this or any other “unicorn” start up, until it has a couple of quarters of earnings. Especially true on the first day, when it’s up 8% plus. Most of these guys are traders and this is likely to go way down in the next couple of days.
Similarly, watch the timeline between now (IPO date) and 180 days. Initial investors are itching to cash in their profits, but can’t do it until a certain date. Many investors get left holding the proverbial bag. Although this waiting period varies on a case-by-case basis, it typically ranges from 90 to 180 days after the date of the IPO. Lock-up periods typically apply to insiders such as a company’s founders, owners, managers, and employees. But it also may apply to venture capitalists and other early private investors.
The reverse-merger structure of this deal caught my interest. Apparently, DK’s private shareholders (including, I believe, Jerry Jones and massage maven Rob’t Kraft) are trying to transfer some of their risk to the public during the long period of inevitable loss that will follow as the on-line betting industry ramps up. Well, ok, I guess. Eventually, everyone may make money. But the merger ploy to avoid SEC filings and normal IPO scrutiny makes me suspicious, given the context.
“Lawrence O’Donnell
@Lawrence
We knew he was insane before he said this. The disappointment is that the experts present didn’t have the courage to forcefully repudiate it. They didn’t jump up & warn America that what we just heard was homicidally insane.”
Of course, today Trump has backtracked and said he was just being sarcastic.
More gaslighting. We know what we saw and heard, and that he was totally serious.
Sarah Cooper’s parody today on twitter will last forever. Also, although more modest: George Takei’s report that Nancy Pelosi has introduced new Articles of Imbleachment.
This is funny.
yeah, I just mentioned that above. Very good.
That is funny…
“Mr. President, is it true that you are exploring the possibility of diverting long trainloads of Clorox bleach to cities that are asking for testing? And, if so, is it also true that your unofficial slogan ‘Make America White Again’ will become official?”
On the draft — all of the odd incremental jockeying for position the Niners employed must’ve been just for insurance purposes, so they could be more certain to get the two guys they wanted all along. Flavor’s info from Cosell is reassuring. Now what’s the over/under on when the nfl will approve training camps? Many people would bet on summer 2021.
The draft gave us some distraction but did they have to show nearly every pick and their family right before they got drafted spoiling most of the drama????
I never saw so many fat people with bare walls in my life…
“Ayucky Pick” LOL!
We hit 2 million!
What exactly does that mean?
it means this site has been hit 2 million times.
I’m surprised that you guys are not all gloating over how the 9rs fleeced my woe-begone Bucs out of a 4th rounder and got the guy they wanted in Kinlaw anyway. The Bucs really, really needed a OL stud to protect Tom Brady (if and when he ever plays). I guess they were not willing to take the chance that the 49rs would trade with someone else to take Wirfs. So they had my Bucs over the barrel.
BF, I think that you are going to be surprised by Aiyuk. He can fly!
Jesus, Trump is really, really dumb. Now trying to say he was being sarcastic. Maybe that will work for anybody not seeing the presser. Think of the hours he puts into trying to get re-elected. Between that and Brietbart/Infowars lunacy plots, no wonder he doesn’t sleep much.
Stan- it wasn’t a fleecing it’s all on the point system.
Trump is very dangerous.
I wonder if anyone under the age of 60 maintains a coin or stamp collection.
I had an awesome Franklin half-dollar book with holes to stick them in.
The ones with the ‘S’ mint marks were toughest to get.
It was very depressing when JFK replaced him…
I had an Indian Head penny collection when I was a kid. I have no idea what happened to it.
i had a great coin collection from like 1980 to 1984 or so, got really into it. Don’t remember what happened to it.
trump just fled his daily reality-show appearance without taking questions.
Was looking forward to the daily Trump comedy hour to see how he was going to handle the questions about his bleach and sunlight clinical trial recommendation. Instead he walks out immediately following Pence’s update and doesn’t take questions. This just gets better and better.
eye opening.
But the rooks haven’t proven anything.
Things sure move once you get past that first round crawl…
One of the important aspects of these contracts is the Guaranteed money. Just in case things don’t work out. this is the area where baseball players have it over the nfl.
Football might be the one sport where a double digit uniform number really makes you look bigger…
Mims to Jets.
What. The. Fuck.
😳 Wow looks like they drafted the 2nd version of Michael Oher from Blind Side..
Thought the same thing. Could be an incredible story
I don’t know if I buy it all.
But good for him anyway…
I sure hope he has some professional help with handling his money. There will be wolves at the door.
After seeing some tape on Ichuck he is quite explosive and Yac one of the best in the nation.IThey can line him up anywhere, out wide, slot for sure, RB.I truly believe Shanny loves guys like this with more versatility then standard WR’s in his system. Also has experience at punt/ kickoff! I know longer feeling like I need to Upchuck 🤮 over the pick of Ichuck…
Kat- All we can do at the moment is put faith into what Shanny sees in him. He could be a steal at #25.
Cueto pitching in simulated game mlb the show hosting. Nationals. giants 14-11 Nats 17-7. dubon in CF
There’s a Giants retro game showing tonight, but I don’t know what game it is.
Have they shown a Giant loss yet?
Back here the Yanks & Mets are 59-0 in retro games shown…
Yeah, I’m not expecting to see the 2016 WC game on SNY anytime soon.
Goodell is really fading…
Goodell has gone from announcing the picks standing up to now laying back in his recliner. I half expect the next pick to be while he’s sitting on the shitter.
lulz
fun song
Prince Tega Wanogho is still out there for KC…
Maybe I am just starved for anything sports related that isn’t a replay from a game I have already seen, but I have to admit I am kind of digging this stay at home draft format. I actually dig seeing everyone in their homes. Belichik feeding his dog on the table, Cee Dee Lamb pulling a Larry Baer, and now Goodell doing the picks with his feet propped up on his lazy boy.
I think they could take this to the next level by showing in real time the teams calling the NFL office to announce their picks. Then showing a live camera shot of the player getting the call from his drafted team. This draft is 100 times better television than that abysmal SNL from a couple weeks ago.
I’m figuring the last few rounds of the draft the bling homes early on turn into trailer parks and homeless camp picks…
tonite’s game is from May 1 Bum vs. Ryu. Yes Giants haven’t lost a game this month. this was the one where Bum forgot to cover 1b on Bellinger shot down 1b line that Belt knocked down but bum didn’t cover and tying run scored.
gotta admit these are getting old.
Yeah I thought the virtual draft last night was fun. You got to see coaches, some with kids running around, and players celebrating with family. The gal with Lamb got hella grief on twitter, including something from another guy from Okla U she previously dated, Trae Young. Who needs to hug goodell anyway?
