A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Who Is Watching The Last Dance?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 27, 2020

It’s on ESPN right? I actually haven’t turned my tv on in a couple of weeks. Honestly, what is there on tv that I can’t get from my lap top? Well, besides The Last Dance.

Is it good? Why should I watch this?

yeah I like it but it’s awfully drawn out and far too long. too many shots of Bulls (Jordan mostly) talking to press or walking around in suits outside locker room. Actual game and practice footage very limited, mostly dunks and hang in air layups by Jordan plus some pippen. Last night was some Rodman but only small stretches of rebounds and D. And of course it’s very Jordan centered, occasional quips from Pippen Rodman J Paxson Kerr and Phil Jackson and sports reporters. Jordan is quite open and admits he hated Pistons (and others) and said Isaiah is a lying a-hole.

Fun fact–I worked for guy I played for in HS as an assistant when he moved to different school briefly in 70s while I was in college. And he ran the basic first couple options of Jackson/Tex Winter Triangle that he diagrammed on board.

that’s cool, I’m more interested in the behind the scenes shots/storylines than what we already saw happen on the court.

      • willedav said, on April 27, 2020 at 8:11 am

agreed and there is definitely some of that; would have liked to have seen more especially at practices. Kerr comes off very well spoken and you can see where he has taken some of the ideas from. In showing some of the retro Warriors playoff wins he is often talking in huddles about “keep moving and get into our flow.” Lot of GS initial offense is 2-3 passes on top and ball being reversed from one side of floor to another and players all moving depending on how D reacts, basic principle of Triangle.

There is some excellent behind the scenes looks of MJ giving teammates shit, ribbing them. We never see that side of sports of the competition and comraderie inside the team…the Jerry Krause stuff is brilliant. Him dancing on the plane after their first championship is funny and watching MJ and Pippen openly belittling him is fascinating. But Krause had the balls to fire Collins after losing in the eastern conference finals and ultimately bringing Rodman on board.

Gooooood morning Flap Universe…(Imagine Robin Williams doing “Good morning Vietnam.”

Boy, I am out of the loop. I had no clue on WTF The Last Dance was. I seriously had to google it. Shows how little I watch ESPN.

I thought the Niners, with their trades and picks did a pretty good job. I would give them an A- or B+.

That’s cool you posted the pict of the Flapalooza, Flav. I was working my ass off on my raised garden bed project this weekend, so did not see the post until this morning. Good times. And I had forgot about the story breaking of Unca and Diggity’s kids dating. That made for some entertaining banter for quite a while.

I read (maybe this was kicked-around over the weekend and I missed that dialogue) that the deal for the Giants signing Puig is close. Giddy-up…I could dig watching Puig launch balls into the LF bleachers.

I hope the stores aren’t out of Saran wrap!
You know how many years ago I first proposed this?
      Me either…

      • Flavor said, on April 27, 2020 at 8:24 am

James and Snarkk bought up all the saran wrap during the years we were still hopeful that Belt could contribute. Those days are long past now so maybe they could send you a few spools. PS–the Puig thing isn’t going to happen. The source that pumped that up on the internet was a fringe guy, Baggs already talked to Z who debunked it saying they weren’t talking to anyone about signing now (for obvious reasons). If Puig WAS considering SF it would be because it was his only offer, he wants to play in Miami (or closer to Miami). And until I hear from a reputable source that Z has made the offer I will continue to believe we will never have any interest in that overrated look at me loser…..

  3. djloo27 said, on April 27, 2020 at 8:31 am

If this happens, it tells me that the Giants believe that they can contend in a shortened season with an expanded play-off system…

The documentary series I’m watching on TV is on PBS; it’s called “H2O,” and it’s literally a history of water on planet Earth. That may sound dull, but not at all. It’s incredibly interesting. And the cinematography is amazing. It shows a whole unique way of looking at the planet, as an entity with its own pulse and bloodstream. The documentary is science, but it is kind of similar to how Native Americans have seen the planet throughout millennia, as a living being to be respected and lived in harmony with, and not just something to exploit, extract from, and pollute.
Life on the planet needs water, but the water on the planet needs life, too. The life on the planet is a crucial part in the system that keeps water on the planet, instead of it all just evaporating away into space. That’s one of the reasons the growing amount of the loss of rainforest is so dangerous.

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on April 27, 2020 at 12:41 pm

I’ve been watching that too and agree – it is interesting.

Don’t overlook the incredible amount of water trapped in the mantle of the earth. Comes back from vents, volcanoes, etc.

Like some of Z off season moves, acquiring Puig would seem to be for sole purpose being able to flip him if he showed he could still hit for power. Given Giants crowded OF I don’t think this makes much sense; Giants are overloaded with LHs so I guess that is an opening. Unless it was only opportunity left, doubt Puig would be OK with platoon corner OF spot.

  6. gianthead said, on April 27, 2020 at 9:48 am

Last Dance is really good. I thought at first this was just going to be an MJ doc and it is so much more and the focus on everything building to this final season is fascinating.

    • gianthead said, on April 27, 2020 at 9:50 am

The one thing they completely gloss over is how Doug Collins is thrown overboard for Phil Jackson. I think Jackson likely plotted against Collins.

      • willedav said, on April 27, 2020 at 9:57 am

Collins was just too intense a guy, million plays yada yada. And still Jordan got all the shots. Plus Krause had brought in Tex Winter as an assistant and Collins didn’t like him or his suggestions, ultimately banishing him to second row during games. When Krause fired Collins he made it the all Jackson and Winters show.
Jackson said he liked Collins and learned lot from him, but he had other ideas for how Bulls should improve, ran things differently and thought very highly of Winters.

MLBTR story on Korean league set to start games (no fans at onset) May 5. ESPN negotiating to get broadcast rights. Watchable? If they were live, night games in Korea would start very early AM on East Coast.

  8. gianthead said, on April 27, 2020 at 9:56 am

Oh Flave there is a brilliant story about MJ showing up in Vegas to drag Rodman back to the team…the entire doc is worth just this one story!!!

  9. alleykat69 said, on April 27, 2020 at 10:12 am

Yeah my least favorite sports columnist Henry Schulman was trying to build up a Puig to the Giants story. He is so useless along with Kawakami it’s a disgrace they allow those 2 in press rooms and to write all their false stories.

  10. Flavor said, on April 27, 2020 at 10:59 am

man, forget for a second what scumbags the Lakers would have to be to apply for this. But the fact that it was approved and received shows you how completely fucked this system is

This just shows you how fucked up things are being run by the Trumpanistas. Small business assistance without the gates to block major outfits. Today the web site crashed because everyone is frantic to get their cut before it runs out. He sure hires the “best people”.

Yeah, Kawakami carries on the tradition of Lowell Cohn (and his dimwit son Grant) of being more important than any story he’s writing.

  12. willedav said, on April 27, 2020 at 11:25 am

I see Kawakami quoted sometimes; is he still in Athletic, for those who subscribe to it?

  13. sandog said, on April 27, 2020 at 11:33 am

I never liked Jordan and always rooted against him (unless Bulls played Lakers) and wasn’t gonna watch The Last Dance, but it is better than I expected. I agree with G that it has more to it than I suspected. I thought it was gonna be a non-stop Michael love-fest. It certainly has plenty of that, but enough other stuff to make it interesting for me. And I find Michael today more likable than I expected.
I had forgotten or never knew the Collins firing was all about the triangle offense. I wish they had directly asked him that question and seen what his response was.
Bugs me to see Jerry Krause portrayed so badly. The guy had a ton to do with their success. It wasn’t Krause’s fault that Pippen signed a crappy contract. Maybe worse than Bum’s—and that is saying something!

    • willedav said, on April 27, 2020 at 11:48 am

Krause put the team together, both ends of their 3 peats. Made a draft day trade to get Pippen, got rid of Horace Grant, acquired Rodman and Kerr yada yada. Hired Jackson as an unknown assistant to Stan Albeck; funny part of that was he had to coach Jackson into making himself presentable and amenable to Albeck in first place.

And though he had hired Collins, saw writing on wall that Winters and Jackson were what was needed to get to next level and Collins was wearing out welcome. Jordan admits to being initially skeptical about Triangle because it automatically meant he was going to get the ball (and shots) out of that offense lot less often than before.

    • gianthead said, on April 27, 2020 at 11:50 am

You feel badly for Pippen though because he had so much family needs on his plate. Shows actually what a dick their owner Reinsdorf was not to acknowledge Pippen was a very special circumstance and deserved more financial support. Without Pippen they win squadoosh…

      • gianthead said, on April 27, 2020 at 11:51 am

And Dawg according to Bill Simmons the portrayal of MJ in the upcoming episodes paints him in a worse light…we will see…

‘Wow’ is about all I can think of to say about this:

“A man died after drinking fish tank cleaner, believing it was a malaria drug that could potentially beat coronavirus.
Gary Lenius and his wife Wanda, both in their 60s, drank chloroquine phosphate last month after confusing it for hydroxychloroquine – a drug previously touted by Donald Trump as a potential cure to treat Covid-19.
Gary, a retired mechanical engineer living in Arizona, died on March 22 and his wife was left in critical condition after ingesting the toxic chemical.
The man’s wife said she had watched televised briefings during which President Trump talked about the potential benefits of chloroquine.”

      Wow is right Zumie!
How this virus has played tricks with everyone’s minds and sadly gullible people pay the ultimate consequences..

      The key word was “potential”…

The key phrase is “snake-oil salesman.”

Amid all the non handshake drama Jordan referenced after Pistons (except Dumars and salley) walked by them and didn’t shake their hands after Bulls were eliminating them comes the other side.
2 years before the Celtics had done same thing to Detroit as Isaiah and salley note, walking off floor as my man Adrian Dantley was shooting FT.
Loved AD from his days with Utah when he led league in scoring twice. Used to watch him battle Bernard King for warriors–neither one could stop the other.
Career 54% shooter from floor and good rebounder as undersized 6-5 forward 81% from line with his funky FT style. Product of famed DeMatha HS of Maryland coached by legendary Morgan Wooten, someone I’ve stolen many a drill/offensive set from.

The Giants aren’t going to sign the Bat Licker. No way. These SIMs games on nbcbayarea, with the “live” Kruk n Kuip commentary, are disorienting. The other night, after Kapler pulled Cueto, I found myself rooting for local hero Tyson Ross and then grieving when he gave up a splash hit. wtf? It’s a cartoon! The new bullpens look pretty good, though.

  17. alleykat69 said, on April 27, 2020 at 4:45 pm

I could give a rats ass if Puig was taking away AB’s from Pence,Duggar,Hamilton and even Dickerson, they’re all has beens, but he should not be taking away AB’s from Jaylin Davis and his development. He needs to be the Centerfielder with 500AB’s whenever they play again.

  18. willedav said, on April 27, 2020 at 4:54 pm

It wouldn’t be Duggar or Hamilton Puig would take ABs from–if either of those 2 make it they’d be in CF. Pence I could live without but you can’t deny inspirational chemistry vet presence there as opposed to whatever it is Puig would bring. Dickerson Davis Yaz I would hope get most of ABs. If Puig were to sign here he’d only be part timer/PH so what’s in it for him to try and build value for next deal, given all the competition?

Pretty hilarious Coronavirus Virus masks out there I’ve seen on the internet..
One guy had a upside down large dog cone attached to his neck..
A 5 gallon water bottle cut from the bottom and of course the cap top off for breathing for others..
A lady used a Kotex pad and 2 hygiene plugs in her nostrils..😷
One guy for social distancing had a note attached to his ass..”If you can smell my fart were to close apart”💩🤣

always enjoyed different versions of blues song 40 days/40 nights; saw guitarist Garth Webber do a great live version at JJs in santa clara. Well it’s been 40 days of lockdown already and might be another 40 nights. Enough to give anyone the blues.

Lot of online convo yesterday in Chron as local counties announced another month of lockdown. Some people cited Sweden as an example of a country that never did anything like here. Well, MSN story I just read noted Sweden has quite a lot more deaths per 100K than neighboring Scando countries that went into immediate lockdown travel and shop rules. This is less than UK but still quite higher than other Euro countries like Czech Republic that are just now opening up more.
Sweden sits at 21 deaths per 100K, Norway Denmark and Finland all less than 7. Sweden has death total of 2200 in a nation of just over 10 mil, surrounding countries quite significantly lower total combined.
