A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

It’s nearly 7am PST. That’s go-time at Casa de Flavor. Thread time. My time to shine. But sadly, San Diggity Dawg’s gone dark. No communication. He’s disappeared. Was the weight of the pending unmasking too much for him? Did he get too deep into this thing? You know what they say about an onion. The more layers you peel back……well, you know the rest.

I cannot unmask without a knowing dude head nod from the man who sent me the card. Therefore I shall sit and wait. Tick tock. tick tock.

some retro highlights tmw: mlbtv Game 7s, Koufax vs. Twins 1965 Pirates-O’s 1979 Cubs-Indians 2016 and of course SF-KC 2014. Today 2:30 nbatv Magic-7ers 1980 game 6. I saw this one late night at Fred’s bar in Mt. View on Middlefield, way before NBA finals got into deciding when it’s games would be shown.

TBS to run “best of Jerry Stiller” Seinfeld episodes, 10 of them back to back, this afternoon.

      • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:06 am

For me that is a must to avoid.
        Much as I like Seinfeld, I can’t stand Jerry & George’s TV parents…

      • gianthead said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:15 am

How can you beat Festivus for the Rest of Us??? Are the Constanzas too close to home for Queens???

      • gianthead said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:16 am

Jerry’s parents too much of a bore..

While we’re waiting we can listen to this song. The song is so catchy, it’ll be stuck in your head for hours.

Fred Breining? Didn’t realize he was local guy, Lincoln HS of SF out there in the Avenues in Sunset, and College San Mateo.

    • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:03 am

For the 50th time, why the fuck did Robinson let him pitch to Monday with lefty killer Holland warm in the pen?
Wonder what Breining’s pitch count was at the time – had to be way up there.
I’ve never forgiven him (Robinson) for it…

And get those fuckin’ kids off the field during the HR Derby!!!

      • gianthead said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:19 am

This game is a blur in my memory but was listening to KNBR that Friday night from my room as a recently turned 14 year old freshman high schooler…

  4. sfsarge said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:35 am

    I’m gonna guess Vida Blue

  5. sfsarge said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:36 am

Unless I missed that there has to be a local connection and in that case I am way out of my era here.

  6. willedav said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:39 am

    Ed Whitson?

  7. Winder said, on May 16, 2020 at 9:18 am

    Shawn Estes

  8. wilcojoe said, on May 16, 2020 at 9:24 am

So I noticed a couple patterns. All the guys shown are white (thanks to Zoot for pointing out) and the hidden card appears to have a rounded border similar to the 1972 era cards of Moffett and Stone. It’s probably a pitcher but I am going out on a limb and saying it’s Dave Kingman.

    • willedav said, on May 16, 2020 at 9:32 am

Randy Moffitt is a good guess too.

      • gianthead said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:28 am

I was almost going Moon Man…

    • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2020 at 9:46 am

      Inside information:
I know for a fact that San Dog has a custom 1975 Kingman road jersey on order…

      • willedav said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:02 am

Kingman really did play some OF for giants too.

      • willedav said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:05 am

he even pitched in couple blowout Ls in 73, 2 innings each time. 4 innings 4 runs 9.00 ERA, lol.

      • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:09 am

He had an interesting ’77 season.
Only player in history to hit all 4 divisions in the same year, right?

  9. gianthead said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:27 am

Sorry posted on old thread…going Bill Madlock…

  10. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:39 am

Hard for me to watch any episodes of Seinfeld now—-the laugh track bugs the shit out of me now.
I did love the show back in the day.

    • willedav said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:47 am

probably haven’t seen 2 complete episodes, ever. Stiller and Meara I do remember from old Ed Sullivan days.
Those are still on somewhere too.

  11. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:49 am

My son was one of the few holdouts who wanted to stay on campus at Cal Poly SLO despite everything going online. We had some initial misgivings, but decided to go along with it. His 3 roommates in his on campus apartment have all left. I just got in late last night for a visit and to take home some of his stuff. There is hardly anyone around. I’m all set up in one of the empty rooms, so we’ve got a bit of a Back to School vibe going on here. He’s taking an online test now. We’re gonna make a late breakie when he’s done and go for a hike.
My ex wife did the same thing 2 weeks ago and blazed the trail for me.

    • Flavor said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:51 am

Diggity staying in the dorms has a “weekend at Bernie’s” feel to it, eh? lqtm. Make sure you don’t park your car without a day pass or the fuzz will take you down. Also, I am unmasking today, cool?

  12. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:59 am

Don’t do it Flav!!! Unmasking today will have nationwide consequences, and I’m fucking serious!
Calm your Susan Rice ass down and give me a little more time.

    • Flavor said, on May 16, 2020 at 11:04 am

ok ok relax jeez. We’ll keep the game going. Unlimited guesses. But let’s unmask tomorrow ok? The weight of this is weighing too heavy on me.

  13. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 11:01 am

Fox is showing Game 6! 2002. Even after 3 rings, this is gonna be hard as hell to watch.

    • sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 11:10 am

…and its the bottom of the 7th

  14. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 11:17 am

I always thought the Dusty giving the ball to Ortiz deal was way overdone. He did it pretty subtlely. You don’t even see it live, but then Fox did a replay about it.

  15. zumiee said, on May 16, 2020 at 11:26 am

    I can’t watch that game. I wish I could, but I just can’t.

    • sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 11:39 am

I totally understand. I’m barely able to. Trev is enjoying watching me squirm and suffer.

  16. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 11:42 am

The Peter McGowan shots are tough to look at. That dude was a true fan.

    Darell Evans

  18. Flavor said, on May 16, 2020 at 11:49 am

Seinfeld is without question my favorite sitcom of all time but The Office and shows like Silicon Valley, without a laugh track, really are the way to go.

  19. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 12:01 pm

Aurilia went down swinging for the fences to end it, I’ll give him that.

  20. Bozo said, on May 16, 2020 at 12:03 pm

Last night at 12:01 am they opened up the beaches in the Outer Banks here in NC.

Billy Martin special on MLB Network opens with his widow displaying the shattered windshield that broke his neck in his fatal car accident. She keeps it in her basement with other stuff that she “can’t throw out”.
It appears to be in a wooden frame…

  25. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:01 pm

    I’d love to see that…

Trev recorded Niner/Cowboy and we are watching it now. Trev super into it as he is a big Niner guy.
“What’s with Jerry Rice dropping all these balls.”
Man, Summerall/Madden was a great combo.

  26. mrsprtdude said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:04 pm

No way am I watching game 6. Ever.

    • sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:09 pm

      I don’t recommend it.

      • sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:11 pm

Dusty did all he could to get us through that game. I forgot how many pitches Spiezio fouled off. It was an incredible at bat by him.

      • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:26 pm

Felix wasn’t the same in 2002.
He couldn’t put hitters away anymore…

      • sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:48 pm

He was throwing 95 and painting upper outside corner repeatedly. Tried to come in once and fucking Spiezio took him out.
I have no more beef with Felix after watching today.

      • djloo27 said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:45 pm

Dog, I don’t blame Felix either – he was gutty as can be.
        But I’d bet those 95s in 2002 were 98-99 in 2000 & 2001.
He just couldn’t wasn’t quite the same and I think it made all the difference…

  27. Flavor said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:20 pm

i don’t remember a lot about Game 6. I was pretty hammered and my unconscious has probably blocked a lot of it out. The only vivid memory I have is living in Redwood Shores, I was in my condo by myself, decided to watch the game alone and just drink Heinekens. At some point I decided this shit is in the bag and it may have been when Dusty did his ball thing. I don’t know. But I started getting emotional and for some reason decided to take a quick shower. No idea why i did that it’s nothing I would have done under normal circumstances. The thing I remember vividly is crying, actually sobbing, in the shower. Got out. Toweled off. Shortly thereafter devastation set in…..

    • Winder said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:24 pm

That series was worse than the ’62’ series and the 62 series broke my heart.

    • sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:51 pm

Did the sudden need for a shower have to do anything with a certain pop singer from the late 80’s????

      • Flavor said, on May 16, 2020 at 7:12 pm

lol. The shower came on for no reason and actually because it worked out so poorly I haven’t showered since.

  28. Winder said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:30 pm

I am reading a book called ‘Horse Heaven’ by Jane Smiley. It’s pretty good. I know there are a few horse racing fans here and think you guys might like it. Read a couple of other books by her also and they were pretty good too.

  29. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 6:57 pm

69,125 at The Stick for this game. Most ever for a game of any kind there.

  30. Flavor said, on May 16, 2020 at 7:15 pm

as the guesses have died down and San Diggity Dawg has given me the knowing dude green light head nod I will be posting the baseball card tomorrow. The back of the card is better than the front of the card, I’ll be posting that, too. You guys are rad for staying with this. Remember the radness after this is all said and done……

  31. Flavor said, on May 16, 2020 at 7:39 pm

I really miss this shit. I will never and have never said a bad word about Candlestick Park.

  32. djloo27 said, on May 16, 2020 at 7:50 pm

Speaking of Summerall & Madden, Phyllis George has passed away.
    She was only 70.
    Actor Fred Willard, too.
    He was 124…

    • sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:51 pm

Bob Hookstratten was a solid bit character in Spinal Tap.

  33. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:28 pm

I’m with you guys who say they can’t/won’t watch 2002 game 6, ever. Funny how the pain still lives deep. What I couldn’t believe (and I’m guessing I’ve said this here before) was how I got to have 2 of those in my baseball life: game 6 of 1986, the Bill Buckner game. Really weird similarities to both games (and series). End result: can’t ever watch either of those games, ever…. I don’t really want to have the pleasure of a third game like that, two were enough.

    • sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:44 pm

We’ve won 3 titles since and that game still traumatizes us.
I shudder to think what that game would do to us if we still had never won one.

  34. sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:48 pm

Banana Bike song IS pretty catchy.
I had a banana skateboard as a kid. The board was plastic and shaped like a banana. It was right before sealed ball bearings became the thing. You’d take a wheel off and little steel balls would go everywhere if you weren’t careful.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:53 pm

      Clay wheels, right?

      • sandog said, on May 16, 2020 at 9:20 pm

No, they were urethane. Though I did have a couple of hand me down boards from my cousins in San Francisco that did have clay wheels. Almost forgot about that.

      • unca_chuck said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:11 pm

My brother and I used to ‘borrow’ my sister’s steel-wheeled roller skates and try to smash plywood on top of them to make rolling death machines. We lived on a good long hill and did some damage to ourselves. When skateboards came out we figured out that garage can lids would fit right on top of them and we would ride them like turtles down that street. Speed wobble was a definite hazard.

  35. unca_chuck said, on May 16, 2020 at 8:52 pm

Paul, between that, Jose fucking Okendo, JT at the plate, all those Dallas/Green Bay losses in the playoffs, and the last 2 49er super bowls, there have been a few devastations.

  36. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 16, 2020 at 9:02 pm

Yeah, Charlie, there are probably games even in other sports that would be painful to watch, although I can’t think of any that would surpass those 2 World Series game 6’s. And yeah, SanDawg, ’02 would be even worse without the 3 rings, just as, for me, ’86 game 6 would be a bigger killer without Boston’s subsequent wins. But man. Those 2 games. A vast bleak wilderness for this fan after those 2.

  37. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 16, 2020 at 9:21 pm

Baseball card pick: Someone else guessed this too but I’m also going with Jeffery Leonard with one … flap… down…

  38. unca_chuck said, on May 16, 2020 at 10:05 pm

what the actual fuck? 1992 NFC Championship Niner loss on 212, and game 6 of the 2002 World Series on 213? FMQL.

Guess I’m watching Mecam’s auto auction.
