A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bummer Time Blues

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 23, 2020

The weekend known as the beginning of Summer is here! And yet, it is missing a few things. Before writing this thread I brushed up on where we are with baseball re-starting and it just doesn’t seem to be happening–and the paramount issue is money, not health. The players are using the health issue to hide behind the bigger issue which is they want as much money as they can get. And I don’t really hold that against them, the owners aren’t going to be giving anything away for free.

But the clock is ticking. Even if an agreement was in place today the teams still has to take a head count on who can actually even get here as I’m assuming travel into the US is going to be  a challenge. And then there are the players who will refuse to play and you know there’s a group like that out there.

Does appear plans are in place for college athletes to return next month.
Hockey has a plan too, though it won’t include Sharks. 24 teams begin playoffs, quickly trimmed to 16 with best 4 of each conference given first round byes then onto standard 16 team/best of 7 format. Good mix–4 of Original Six and 6 different teams from Canada.
NBA still floundering; if they plan on finishing season or even just doing what NHL does, playoffs will go through August and then they couldn’t start next season until some time in December.

I think baseball will sort things out and get going soon enough to have half season.

There was some talk on the radio that the NBA at some future point might consider starting their season on Christmas day and taking on baseball for a larger chunk of their season. If they resume this season, they would kind of be forced into trying that anyway next season…

      • willedav said, on May 23, 2020 at 9:11 am

yeah Loo makes perfect sense.. I looked up Warriors sched last season 2018-19. Game 1 October 16 first round of playoffs 6 months later April 13. Finals game L to Raptors June 13, 2 months after playoffs started. So if they began season late December it would run through Finals in late August, right before football and last month of baseball season.

If Charlie Finley was still alive he would fire every mlb player on his team instead of paying them for half a season. Then just have the lowest scrubs in the organization play out the season.

    • xoot said, on May 23, 2020 at 8:30 am

I always thought that the one good thing Charlie Finley would’ve done was sign Barry Bonds after he got indicted and let go by the Giants in 2007. Charlie would’ve put ads featuring the Bonds mug shot on tv and on billboards all over the Bay Area. “Our new designated hitter!”

MLBTR story said Rays to have 15-20 players in camp Monday. with other states open/soon to be maybe others will follow through–Georgia Texas Arizona Kansas Missouri. Even Newsom gave go ahead for pro sports, depending on respective guidelines of county.

I think New York is on the brink of mass unauthorized business re-openings.
The media here seems to be fueling it.

Good morning Flap Universe. Well, I missed a call from Stix last night, and called him this morning. We talked for almost 40 minutes. He just got to his sister’s house, I believe he said, yesterday (or maybe the day before). Has to check-in daily with a half-way house. He sounds REALLY good for a 75 year old dude who has spent his last 4-plus years in a shitty federal prison.

He is going to try to get online with his sister’s laptop. I told him many would love to see him post here. So, don’t fall out of your chair if you see a post from Stix.

Anyway, I have to run. Meeting some friends for a motorcycle ride today, and I haven’t showered or had breakfast.

Stix said it was OK to share this number if you want to give him a call: 1-952-683-1199.

Make it an awesome day all.

Great news. I tried that phone number a couple of time but the line’s busy, no vmail. The rest of you must be ringing it off the hook! Please say hello to him from me if you get through.

  6. djloo27 said, on May 23, 2020 at 8:50 am

Wonder what Stix is making for breakfast…

    • djloo27 said, on May 23, 2020 at 8:53 am

Didn’t see your post, Chi. Must be psychic.
      Very uplifting news!

  7. Flavor said, on May 23, 2020 at 9:23 am

Although the prerequisite of Stix having to fire up his sister’s laptop…uh I don’t know mates, we aren’t home free yet!

  8. chipower9 said, on May 23, 2020 at 9:39 am

The number I provided is a land line. I believe it was provided by the BOP, for him to check-in regularly. Anyway, I just re-checked the number, and that is a good number. Good luck on getting through if anyone calls.

Yeah, not sure the details on the laptop. I told him that a number of folks are going to be happy to see him post again. The dude’s mind is crystal clear. For 75 years old and having lived in the hell hole he has for four-plus, he sounds amazingly well. He is now off insulin, but does have some sciatica issues with his lower back and hip. Sleeping a steel cot for years will do that to a body, I suppose.

Anyway, gotta scarf down some grub, and get the scoot out on the road. Happy Saturday Flappers.

      Cool photo!

    • willedav said, on May 23, 2020 at 10:39 am

Really nice shot, thx. Located at 16th St. and Bryant in Mission. wiki says Langendorf bakery and Hamms Brewery nearby. Remember Hamms in those cans, lol. My uncle used to be bread truck driver, good gig in ’50s.

Really nice photo. The last place that I lived at in SF was 17th and Texas not too far away.
I was in a couple of bands that rehearsed at the Vats (the Hamms Brewery), what a trip that place was.

I know people have trouble signing into WordPress from time to time. I fear the login may present a hurdle greater than any prison gate could pose

    • zumiee said, on May 23, 2020 at 10:10 am

Some (including me) suddenly had trouble getting to the Flap on a smart phone. With a laptop there should be minimal problems. And the Flap can be accessed through the WordPress website wordpress.com. That’s what I use on my smart phone. It’s pretty simple.
With a phone number we can talk him through it.

  11. xoot said, on May 23, 2020 at 11:20 am

I just spent an hour on the phone with Stix. He sounds energetic and dialed in. I urged him to get onto the blog asap.

      Wow!

Looking forward to Stix’ first recitation of a post-hoosegow experience of his chef skills back at work…

Yeah Baby!!! The Stixter is out!!
A Glorious Day for Flap Nation!!

  14. Flavor said, on May 23, 2020 at 1:35 pm

i’ll be home later. Can’t wait to see if Stix has cracked the login and we can ask him questions!

  15. sandog said, on May 23, 2020 at 1:47 pm

I tell you one thing, Stix ain’t having a few Eggo’s and a bowl of Lucky Charms for breakfast.
There’s gonna be a cast iron grill and some non processed food heavily involved.

  16. sandog said, on May 23, 2020 at 1:51 pm

Love that Seals Stadium pic. I’m envious that both of my brothers attended games there.
If you look in the distance, you can see that tower to the left and before the Bay Bridge that had a big ass Union 76 sign on it with the time displayed digitally for all to see after crossing the bridge.
I used to think that sign was bad ass and always felt like it welcomed us when traveling from Woodland to my grandma’s place in the city. This was back in the day when you couldn’t just go to the score and buy a digital clock for $5.
That tower is long gone now. Anyone else remember it? Advert switched to Bank of America at one point.

  17. alleykat69 said, on May 23, 2020 at 2:37 pm

    Yeah SanDog,
Remember that 76 sign well coming back from Tahoe!
It set the tone for exactly how long of a drive left I had to San Carlos, it was always dead on accurate..

  18. zumiee said, on May 23, 2020 at 4:08 pm

I do appreciate a good Smiths reference.

  19. dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 23, 2020 at 6:05 pm

That’s one of the best pics I’ve seen of Seal Stadium and glad you fellas like it. I still have a ball my Great Grandfather caught during a minor league game there at some point. It’s hard to make out the handwriting but he wrote the date, hitter and pitcher on it. I don’t remember the 76 sign but do remember the wooden sculptures in the bay near Emeryville as you approach the toll plaza. The Boy Scouts built them iirc. That was always my proximity marker for visiting grandparents in Daly City.

    • xoot said, on May 23, 2020 at 6:17 pm

The boy scouts may have ventured out on the mudflats a bit, but the spectacular driftwood and found-object sculptures in Emeryville started with the work of students and instructors at Calif. College of Arts & Crafts (founded down the street from my home here in Oakland). I’m sure there are wiki pages about it.

I remember a jazz album from the 60s with a great b/w photo of one drummer statue on the cover. I have no recollection who the musicians were, but I remember the statue. You could effing hear the music. I think it was this one, from a better angle. Yes, the drummer is hitting his high hat.

And now I know the rest of the story-can’t remember when they stopped appearing or if the existing ones just finally fell apart or whatever. It still sort of bums me out to drive by and see nothing there. Glad you and Chi have reached out to stix. Very nice of you both. I assume you’ve given him some Barrister’s advice on what not to post. lulz

What time is it in Minnesota?

    • xoot said, on May 23, 2020 at 6:33 pm

it’s early. Give him a call.

Patience, Grasshopper. Stix will likely need a little gentle coaxing before Flapping right back in. Feel safe and all that. Needs to know that no one here will be trying to send him a new tricked-up motherboard. Just looking forward to his descriptive game recaps (maybe from Taiwan or Japan leagues at this time), down-home savory recipes, and accounts of all the pussy lying on his bed keeping him warm at night….
