How We Protest In MY Hood
Thought you guys would get a kick out of what softies we are in Cali. In my neighborhood, every few blocks, there are *rock stations* like this:
everyone who lives here is encouraged to paint rocks and then leave them on the side of the road like this:
As you can see, shit’s out of control right now….lqtm
Out of total population close to 2 million, right?
yes. 52 currently hospitalized. The curve could not be any flatter.
my dad, “Bobby Bowden”, told me a good story about the one time he got arrested in the early 80’s. He was freshly divorced from my mom and driving his mid life crisis porsche around SF. He got pulled over for rolling a stop sign and the cop arrested him for driving a stolen car. He was *detained* for several hours at the PD while it got sorted out. This is what happened: my dad had a personalized license plate that read “MY911SC”. But someone in Portola Valley who had their porsche recently stolen had a personalized plate that read “MY9llSC”— with 2 l’s instead of 1’s because my dad obviously had the personalized plates with the 1’s.
He said once they figured it out at 2am they just threw his keys at him and said “you can go now.” My dad said that while he was protesting the charge the cop who arrested him pulled out his gun and shook it in his face saying if he didn’t shut up he’s shoot him in the face. Not sure if that part of the story is hyperbole that has grown over the years. 🙂
thx to xoot for Fantastic Johnny C. Had to laugh at “Best of” that being only song of his I think I ever heard. Boogaloo became a term for a type of funkier latin dance music that was different from mambo style of Tito Puente bands in NY too; Mongo Santamaria had some “bugalu” lps in 60s with different vibe than his previous afro-Cuban stuff or what was being recorded Fania records and P-R guys from NY.
Speaking of juries, my sister who is near Burbank Airport was selected for trial of some MS-13 guys accused of raping and murdering some poor gal not too long before covid cancelled all jury trials. She hopes the whole thing will turn into mistrial as they told her originally this one might take months.
5/31/64 is day Giants played 23 innings vs. Mets in 2nd game of a DH. By the end Mays was at SS, Perry had thrown 10 innings of shutout relief and Cepeda had lined into a triple play in 14th. Giants did sweep as Marichal had complete game 5-3 W in the opener and SF won nightcap 8-6 on rbis from Del Crandall and Jesus who I guess helped “save” Giants. That was always a joke headline of his days in SF, “Jesus saves Giants.”
The game was the talk of the schoolyard the next day.
I already had my first real SF cap.
I remember my dad putting it on my head in the store so I could wear it out of there.
Cost: $ 2.02
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN196405312.shtml
cap Peterson and Gil Garrido lol. Always in long games like this couple guys whose BA take a dive. Mays 1-10 Hiller 1-8. Cannizaro 1-9 but the guy caught the whole game for Mets. Duke Snider pinch hit for SF.
giants blew 6-1 lead but held Mets scoreless for last 16 innings.
thx for box Loo. I was trying to do it in scorebook which was 2 pages and all over place. think it lasted through Sunday dinner here on left coast too.
Ken Mackenzie is the answer to a very solid trivia question.
Hint: It was something he did with another team…
I looked to see who else he played for, so yeah, I think I know the answer — or the question.
I looked him up. I have no patience. Terrific stories. Thanks. I can see a couple of solid questions in there. One of his mlb managers said of him: “He’s a splendid young fella with a great education from Yale University. His signing with us makes him the lowest paid member of the class of Yale ’56.”
In the box Loo provided Ron Herbel pitched 4 shutout innings but didn’t have an AB—he did get credit for SH. Pretty impressive considering that season he went 0-47 with 2 BBs and 30 Ks.
followed that one by going 1-49 and 1-38 over next two seasons
So in 3 seasons that’s 2-134 at the plate.
I expect a spike In Covaid19 due to the George Floyd rioting.Social distancing is out the window during this mayhem.
Giants TV network is showing 4 retro games today.
The smartest guys to getaway from are dumb planet earth is those astronauts, avoiding Covid19&Riots running rampant thru every cities..
I remember Roger Craig on those awful Met teams from 62-63. He had rough time at plate himself, going 4-76 in 1962. Earlier he had a year playing for Brooklyn Dodgers where he went 1-61, in 1956.
lol WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON
Ha, that’s in Jersey.
nba has playoff game 1990 Portland with cliff robinson buck Williams and newcomer drazen petrovic vs. Suns of tom Chambers Hornacek and Kevin Johnson having his best year at 22 pts a game.
Blazers had Wayne Cooper too solid rebounder ex Warrior.
terry porter was really good scorer too, especially vs. Golden St.
On the TCM network I recently saw the movie “Dark Passage,” from the 1940s, starring Bogart and Bacall. They made four movies together, in addition to being married to each other.

The movie’s plot is far-fetched and ridiculous: an escaped convict gets his face changed with plastic surgery, and he happens to coincidentally hitch a ride with a woman who knew his wife, who he was falsely accused and imprisoned for murdering, and on and on, etc. and so forth.
But it is cool that the film is set in San Francisco, and there are lots of camera shots of SF in the 1940s. I found that interesting.
I like the noir-ish movie poster.
I agree about the SF scenes and I also like the movie. I thought Agnes Moorehead did a great job in it but doubt she could ever top the role she played in that Twilight Zone she was in.
Yeah, she’s very good. I used to only know her career as Endora from “Bewitched,” and, by the way, Endora was RIGHT about Darren. Darren is a complete dud; Samantha could have done way better.
I also saw a good music-related movie, from 1961, “Paris Blues.”

Newman and Portier are American jazz musicians in Paris. Woodward and Carroll are American tourists looking for romance. There is an element of insight into race relations.
Very well done and thought-provoking movie.
wow interesting. That was a time when jazz musicians could tour Europe and play concert halls with much fanfare. the musicians and the people in crowd were in suits and well dressed, as opposed to conditions in America where jazz normally took place in smoke filled small clubs. And of course musicians treated completely different than in their home country; many stayed recorded and thrived there.
It was so nice for African-Americans to be treated as equals in France.
England also treated black people way better than over here. I know Champion Jack Dupree and Nina Simone both moved over to europe and I am sure there were plenty more. I know Howlin Wolf and Sonny Boy liked it over there. To bad they were pretty old by the time they went.
this show Gangs of London is really good.
Zumiee I gotta disagree with the Bewitched take. The first Darrin was great—she wasn’t going to do any better. The second Darrin, I will agree with you. She could have done better than him.
Well, we disagree. Both Darrens were always scolding her about using her magic abilities. A lot of times she saved his butt by coming up with successful ad campaigns for his advertising job. He wasn’t even that good at his job.
I realize Darren is the foil (the straight man) to react against the comedy. The same role as Tony the astronaut with Jeannie.
Jeannie and Sam were so cool.
They were both Dick’s how ironic.
Dick York and Dick Sargent
For sure Dick York was the more polished actor of the 2.
York had to leave the series early due to health issues( lung cancer) I believe.
But the chemistry between Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York was strong unlike Sergeant who was blah and boring..
One of the Dicks was on Twilight Zone about a magic penny, can’t remember which one. And Elizabeth Montgomery was on TZ with Charles Bronson.
Samantha, thinking about Darren….

the second one. Agreed. And LOL at your comment about his job skills. He really wasn’t very good. Fucking white privilege shuffled his ass to the top anyways……
I dig the painted rocks. I’ve even bought a few along the way.
Painted bottle caps, too…
The rocks are great, thanks for noticing them. I get that I live in a bubble but I’m thankful for it, too
Corona – Toast Every Sunset
That could be their next ad campaign!
Is that from Legend of Lizzie Borden? Great flick!
Yes
I guess the problem with peaceful protesting is that it doesn’t attract enough attention.
I’m aware of the few historic exceptions to that…
What attracts attention is Target stores.Always number 1 on looters list along with Best Buy’s when your in need the need to upgrade your big screen!!
They got a target on their back for sure. Badum dum
Hey Flav I’m watching the Portland story on nbatv about the early ’90s team. Were you up there then, get a chance to see them? Porter Drexler Buck Williams yada yada Adelman as coach…
um nfltv is showing the most recent Super Bowl right now.
I’m in…
I dunno about you, but if Jeannie were my personal assistant, I wouldn’t have stayed much longer in the astronaut corps. Too much reason to stay on earth…
You got that right Snarkk!
Reminds me of that joke
What does golfer Greg Norman and Barbara Eden have in common?
Answer… They both blew they’re Masters!
lol, that’s great, never heard that one
Rioting and looting in downtown Walnut Creek? Are they breaking windows with nine irons? Lacrosse sticks?
lol, POTD
Oh I absolutely saw the Blazers back in the day. I saw A LOT of them, lol. In fact, during my senior year they practiced at my college (Lewis and Clark) because the Rose Garden was being remodeled. It was the early 90’s, they did shit differently back then–a lot more casual access, I would say, this never would have happened today. But more than once I actually found myself SHOWERING with the Blazers. My PE class ended around the same time their practice ended. Clyde Drexler could literally drop his dick on the ground if he wanted to. There you go, BAM, something I bet you didn’t think you’d learn at the Flap today! (or any day)
I remember you talking about the Glide and the late Jerome Kersey. that was a cool show, hour long tribute to Rip City. Sadly, Petrovic died first, then Duckworth, and Kersey at 52 I think.
did you get to many games?
no. Like 2.
Every time there is looting everyone says “why are thy destroying their own neighborhods”? Maybe they are learning?
I wonder if this will change moinds about Kap. Peaceful protest!
minds:)
Looting in Walnut Creek about half a mile from our house.
That’s tense. SIP. My son lives about ten blocks from where the worst rioting was in Oakland the other night. About 2 am things finally got quiet. He and his girlfriend calmed down. Then a thunderstorm rolled through. As such electrical shows are rare around here, they spent some terrified moments trying to make sense of the flashes and explosions.
I grew up there. Very sad. Stay safe man
Might be time to move to a ghost town.
Not much to loot when buildings are empty..
The painted rocks thing seems kind of cool. But what do they do with all the rocks? “They”, whoever they is. Are. Once a week, someone comes and removes them? Just curious….
The players make their counter-offer:
“NEW YORK — Major League Baseball players proposed a 114-game regular season Sunday, up from 82 in management’s offer, but no additional pay cuts beyond the one they agreed to in March, a person familiar with the plan told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no details were announced.
Opening day in the coronavirus-delayed season would be June 30 and the regular season would end Oct. 31, nearly five weeks after the Sept. 27 conclusion that MLB’s proposal stuck to from the season’s original schedule. The union offered scheduling flexibility to include more doubleheaders.”
Without fans in the stands, the owners probably see that as too many games, and not profitable for them.
“Load management” will be coming to baseball in a big way…
Crazy. Xoot. Hope he hunkers down and stays safe. My daughter used to live on 21st and West near downtown. She said whenever there were riots, they were very close by. Same daughter, who moved down from Seattle a couple months ago and stayed with us, moved to Berkeley last week. I’ve been fixing up the place for the past few days, and we needed to get a couple faucet pipes.
We went to the Emeryville Home Depot, closes at 8, but when we got there at 6:30, we found out they were turning people away. They were closing due to rioting. Went to the Target next door, and they had already boarded up the entire outside of the building. Even creepier is there were about 15 cars parked in the back of the parking lot, and people were coming out of the weeds waiting for night to fall. By the time I started heading back home, there was a helicopter circling that Target.
Trump’s America, baby,
I know the 21st and West neighborhood. Edge of west Oakland. There was a burger place near there, on Grand, in a rundown strip mall, that had the most beautiful stuffed polar bear I’ve ever seen standing eight feet tall and roaring over the plastic tables. It’s long gone. I used to stop in on my way to work at the West Oak RR yard.
Emeryville has been overrun the past few days. I think the same gangs that periodically ransack the Baystreet shops are now going after everything. They probably have two or three dozen cops on the force in that town.
A lot of those people coming out of the weeds actually live in them. I used to work at Svenhards Bakery in West Oakland. If you worked the day shift you would see people in bunches coming out of the brush in the morning when you parked your car.
Yep. Folks were laughing and talking and hanging out, but the vibe was kinda weird.
Have you been to Abura-Ya Fried Chicken down there, Xoot? Great fried chicken done Japanese style in a late 70’s punk rock ambience. Really really good chicken.
They opened in downtown Oakland after I quit working there, so no, I’m mainly around College Ave/Piedmont Ave lately. Berkeley too. But my son, who works downtown, says he likes it. (Of course, he’s been working from home for months.)
I think I’ll just hang out up here in the food section for now…
Xolo, the taqueria across from the Fox Theater, is ok. I was really disappointed when Rudy’s Can’t Fail shut down their place in the theater building. I have to drive all the way to their Emeryville place for some Monday Special Meatloaf now.
Never been there, but LOVE the name. London Calling is one of my favorite albums.
Rudy’s has some investment connections to Green Day. I don’t know the details. But thus the Clash homage.
I tell you, it’s great to see Trump manning up and addressing the nation in these troubling times.
Hah, just kidding. He’s hiding like a bitch in the White House bunker with his family. Fucking entitled whiny candy-ass motherfucker. The people need to go all 1789 on his ass.
It’s pretty funny he’s in the bunker. And actually tweeted that vicious dogs would be released on any protestors that scaled the fence. It’s funny and pathetic at the same time.
Vicious dogs so rings of the south and all that imagery of the race riots in the 60s. Something Trump knows. He tweets to his base. All the rest is scripted blather.
Ominous weapons, though? Mike Pence? Turtle-Man? Bela Luguliani?
Trump has also announced that “Hail To The Chief” will be officially replaced by this:
He told black people via sound bite and twitter that MAGA loves them. He simply acknowledged that MAGA is white. So half of his statement was honest. That’s very rare.
Hah! Thing is, he doesn’t get the nuance.
His use of “MAGA” as the title name of his supporters was something I hadn’t heard from him before. MAGA is no longer just the slogan, it is the name of his cult. His cult has a name. They are MAGA.
That would make Melania “Lady Maga”…
Good times.

Are “the MAGA” wearing their Brown Shirts yet?…
yes, Macdog. That’s it. And isn’t she brilliant?
Right on, Xoot. The wind effect was a nice touch.
Another old movie I saw recently was “Bicycle Thieves,” an Italian movie from the late 1940s, set in the dire poverty of post-WWII Italy.

A doofus guy gets his bike, his only transportation, stolen on day one of a job gluing posters around town. He spends the rest of the movie dragging his son around town trying to track the bike down. His son realizes his dad is a doofus, but poignantly decides to stay loyal to him.
The film is important as a piece of cinema art, taking the art of film to a higher level, in the same way “Citizen Kane” did.
yeah saw that many years ago, drama of post war Italy. San Jose used to have Towne theater right on Alameda, showed a lot of indy stuff, foreign films yada yada. Great little place for Sunday matinees. think the indy ones in Menlo Park (Landmark) are all gone now too.
phone alert–San jose (I’m just outside city limits) has curfew from 8:30 PM to 5 AM for next 7 days.
Who Let the Dogs Out? More like . . .
A lot of what’s going on now is very reminiscent of the 60’s.
Proposal Zum referenced above should work. Just guessing but more games played and televised, better for ownership too. As ESPN guy Olney said, this has to be settled, now. Get everyone in over next 2 weeks, hold workouts, play some real MLB in a month…safely as can be.
Painted rocks. Interesting way to get your rocks off. Actually, cool idea. No looting in Placerville. Fucking looters need a good old fashioned ass kicking.
Big column on MLBTR of union’s response proposal. regular season would end October, playoffs (expanded) til Thanksgiving. hmmnn 112 game sched to start June 30. Hope differences can be worked out, and soon.
Don’t know if this will fly.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/06/01/president-trump-made-19127-false-or-misleading-claims-1226-days/
Profile of a sociopath; Trump fits it completely:
https://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html
Fun Fact:
This used to be a baseball blog…
If Trump had been competent and heeded all the warnings he got, there’s a chance baseball would be being played right now.
I sort of like the union’s counter-proposal, though an asterisked WS on Thanksgiving seems to be pushing it a bit, just for extra money.
The union scheme seems to give rich players an incentive to opt out. If two overpaid guys per team took advantage of that opportunity, the owners would save a billion bucks. Or so. And we’d get to see young guys play. Of course, there would be gap fillers. And for every Vogt there’d be a Kratz.
“Every rose has its thorn,” which may be the worst song in the history of humans writing songs.
I’m not familiar with that composition, but your excerpt does remind me of the great Tom Waits song “Downtown Train.”
No that would be ‘we built this City’
good call, Winder. For me, that just edges out Don’t Stop Believin’.
Lol.
What happens when one player tests positive for corona virus?
It’s going to happen.
His whole team goes into isolation, can’t play for two weeks?
Play on, and daily testing waiting for more?…
No cancelling games has never been the plan. The player himself isos but that’s it. As you suggested continued testing. As far as I can tell, it’s similar scenario for even Korean and Japan/Taiwan leagues.
at least by owners anyway. Dialogue has less about safety than $$$…there is part of the proposal by union that if players for whatever reason don’t care to participate they get service time but not salary beyond a certain minimum.
“Cat’s Cradle” is my kryptonite. Worst. Song. Ever.
I actually like that one. At least it makes you think. When you hear it it probably brings back something that wasn’t fun or pleasant. There quite a few songs like that for me. Or else you just don’t like it.
Isn’t that a Kurt Vonnegut novel?
Yep it is. And in it is one of my favorite Vonnegut saying but for the life of me I can’t remember it right now.
Yer getting too deep, Winder! Tom Waits? Still haven’t seen him, but I dig his stuff.
Me too
Oh yeah. Waits is a genius. He’s a good actor, too. I really enjoyed his (fairly) recent role in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
mlbtv had Yanks/Jeter highlights on all weekend which I mostly avoided.
So…here goes. Jenkins couple weeks ago made the suggestion Sabes belongs in HOF. Based on what he did for Yanks before he left, being in on to some degree drafting or signing Jeter Rivera Posada and Pettite, all the winning seasons he had here in SF after coming in 1997 off big losses prior to his arrival, and of course 3 in 5. If I read stats right, during his tenure as GM over 17 years Giants had 3rd best overall winning pct in NL.
Thoughts?
Stix update – when we talked about a week ago, he told me that he had a letter that had not gotten mailed before his release. So, he sent me a one-page letter written on Memorial Day, and included the letter from when he was still in the pokey. Said he is still sorting-out getting online, and has no inhibitions about coming-on, or answering questions. So, we will see Stix here at some point.
Boy, Stix described how rampant covid-19 was in the prison. He was sequestered with 50 others into the SHU where two inmates shared a 6×10 cell with no windows. Also could not get access to the commissary food, so was totally dependent on the slop they call food. Stix was telling me that the prisons get $103 a day for each prisoner, and that his prison spends about $2 a day on food. That is just criminal.
Talked this morning with Stix for about 40 minutes or so. He sounds good. Out doing some gardening. Eating good food. His brother-in-law has made a trip to his place and brought back some of his clothes, etc. So, he is getting settled.
Again, he is sorting out some technical issues, but plans to post. Until then…
Great news. Thanks, Chuck.
thanks for the update. I can only imagine the technical issues.
You bet. Not clear on the issues, but anyway, his intent is to post. So, we wait.
Wtg Chi. Hope Stix is back online soon, but just glad he is outta stir,
lol
That’s hilarious, especially after all the Darrin talk yesterday. Looked it up, this must be from a ’70s TV movie they starred in, “A Killing Affair.”
A rare, “Ha-ha” from me!
OSF
PS
Still laughing.
I’m OK with the song “Cat’s Cradle.”
In the Vonnegut novel, in talking about the cat’s cradle string design, a character says: “I never could see the cat. And I never could see the cradle.”
I think that’s the novel, a sci/fi novel really, about a weapon that can freeze all the water on the planet, and kill all humans. It’s about how do societies function knowing that weapons of mass destruction, like nuclear weapons, exist? As the years went on, American society thought about it less and less. The weapons are still all there, with friend and foe, but we think about it less. We’re reminded that biological dangers exist.
I know I said I didn’t care how many games they play but 50 games, that’s just not enough. That’s like 12 series. Lol.
That’ll never fly.
I guess they’ll meet somewhere in the middle which brings us back to around 82 again…
yeah I can believe that. At least players get the pro rated $$, all of them.
5 team division you are in: play them 12 times =48
5 team division you aren’t in (AL West for SF) 8 each = 40
Owner, Players, just get your fucking shit together, and play some fucking baseball!
120 games. 60 games. Whatever. Just figure it the fuck out! These motherfuckers are almost as incompetent as trump…
The ‘20 Astros, what a team! They had a red-hot regular season and won 40 games, as they went on to win the World Series.
After hoisting the World Series trophy, Bregman looked into the camera and said: “Suck on it!”
If there is half a season plus playoffs, whomever wins it will always have a stigma attached. Whether it’s the Cubs Yanks Rays or anyone. And if nothing else I’ll at least get to watch the Giants play ball for a few months.
Now that I’m retired, with all sorts of interest in the markets, I pay more attention to financial matters than I ever did before. I think I understand what’s driving the dive in the futures markets this evening. China is threatening to impose economic sanctions in response to the USA’s violations of the USA’s people’s human rights.
If I could watch a good live baseball game at least once every day, my current way of life would improve quite a bit.
XOOT, what in the hell is keeping the DOW afloat? I would expect the various forces would have to push it down more. What do they know? Are the drinking the Trump Kool-Aid?
BTW, OSF stands for OldSealsFan and OldStupidFart as I’m sure others could come up with.
Sealsman, I don’t know. Flapper Blade may have a good view. I vaguely watch the dow, the s&P500, the nasdaq, the russell and the bond markets. I also sometimes watch the birds outside in the maple and birch trees. Last year was a lot better than this year. Last year a god damned redtail hawk sat in a branch crook five feet away from me for five minutes before it shot off toward a ground squirrel. Anyway, when congress and the fed take action to shake loose the credit markets and shore up ETFs and give money to Boeing (whose bonds pay real well) and so forth, all I can do is shake my head and count the money. Market crash? Right now I’m right where I was in December. Haven’t lost a dime. On paper.
I’ve been asking myself this very question for 3 weeks now. I can’t understand what is keeping this market afloat other than interest rates at damn near negative numbers and the Fed cranking up the $$$$$ printing machine. I’ve been poised to sell off all our 401k money but have held out due to the market’s unrelenting optimism in the face of what appears to be armageddon.
I have a current rate of return of 3.5% in one account (14.2 YTD), and 1.5% (over 10%, YTD) in the other. I moved NO money during the wild swings, so when the market went really low, I was buying really low. Talked to my broker yesterday, and made some minor changes, moving about 20% of my money into cash/bonds. IT’S been a wild ride.
Blade should be moving into his new digs, soon. Once he gets settled, hope to see him back more frequently.
50 games is a joke.Whats that 10 starts for your #1 pitcher? Throw in a injury to a player that’s puts him out minimum 10 day DL are a Covid19 candidate 2 weeks? That’s 20% of a 50 game season lol 😂
Did you guys know that they’re now is more National Guards on call in the United States then they’re is active duty Soldiers in Iran, Syria& Afgainisten (sp)
This may make Kent State look like a Sunday picnic. Trump is calling US troops on US citizens.
A new low
it’s outrageous watching this unfold
trump and the other right-wingers are threatening attacks by the army and the air force. We’re at a dangerous point. My son IM’d me today to say he was headed down to the big demo in Oakland this evening. He was going to proudly wear his loud impeach trump t-shirt. No, it’s not about you, I said. Ok, what about fuck gentrification? No. Let the black and brown people set the agenda. He knows that I was arrested at demos back in the 80s. Ok. Ok. I’ll wear a regular shirt. And off he went. Great kid. Biggest Giants and 9ers fan you’ll ever meet, too. (I took him to his first Giants game at Candlestick when he was two. This is a Giants blog, right?)
Posse commitatus law prevents using the US army on US citizens in the United States.
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1385
Hope your son is careful. Shit is nuts out there. A man in Louisville at a protest was shot and killed by the cops earlier tonight.
Mike – it was cool as hell to meet you and your son at a Giants game couple of years ago. I think my son was about four or five when I took him to his first Giants game at the Stick. He too is a huge Giant and Niner fan. My daughter got half of the equation right…she is a big Giant fan, but follows the Pack in football (her mom polluted her mind in that regards).
Floyd Mayweather to pay for George Floyd’s funeral..
The dude is broke and he can’t pay his taxes, but he can pay for a funeral??
As George Floyd was being held down and choked to death, twice officers told him to get in the car, without letting him up. What?
The four officers were sadistic and stupid.
