A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Puig Hysteria

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 27, 2020

Ok, so we have established that pretty much every Flapper wants Puig. Albeit for different reasons. And I’ve even gotten to a place where I could even see why Puig would want to come to our ridiculous ball park (“Look at me, villain turned hero” thing).

Now Z just has to say “Fuck that guy” and make it so…..

I might make an SF shirt that just says “Fuck That Guy”.

Zero reason to take ABs away from who they already have–Dickerson Davis Yaz as corner OF. Again from what Z said on the “chalk talk” live meet up with Holmes and 4 announcers, he’s staying in house for DH etc. Z, who I’m sure is very familiar with Puig, had all off season before ST was ended to get him if he was such a great idea–and didn’t.

Long article on MLBTR this morning explaining 30 man (to start) regular roster and additional 30 players allowed, rules and regulations yada yada.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:27 am

Now that resets are all the rage in MLB, how bout something I posted several years back as to size of roster. Do the math around the field and 27 on the roster seems totally logical. By the numbers both 3 and 9 figure by multiplication at 27. Nine innings. Three outs. Nine on the field. Three strikes. There’s more, but consider this–Many teams carry 7 relievers + 5 starters, add 8 position players and you have an even score.

Bench: You need a backup catcher, a couple spare outfielders and no fewer than a couple of utility infielders. Leaves a pretty tight situation for pinch hitters, pinch runners and L./R. match-ups on a 25 man roster.

Players union would love rosters expanded by two men as it would add another 60 men to the teams. Now, with the owners and the union stuck on the Dink Hitter rule, a standard 27 man roster would make sense all around the bases…and the fruited plain for that matter.

      • djloo27 said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:38 am

Completely agree, Stix – almost entirely due to the expanded pitching staffs.
When teams carried 8-9 pitchers, they not only had 3 catchers they had a righty and lefty PH, mop up men and late inning defensive replacements…

Hey I’m on board to sign Puig,he’s the best remaining F/A out there. And does it matter if a lot of fans hate his guts?No because they’re won’t be any fans in the stands anyway. He rakes at Oracle career wise, so that’s a huge plus.Hell he could DH some with the other slew of Vets,Panda,Ruf,Pence. But to me a platoon with Dickerson lefty/righty works for me.Zman can show the fans it’s not all about giving up what the last 3 years have been about.By signing Puig in a shortened season can keep this team in the hunt.60 games is nothing if you get a hot month together.Giants went 37-23 in that June-July run, do something like that again and they could be on top in the west..

  3. willedav said, on June 27, 2020 at 7:47 am

Well, drama and trauma will be over by sunday, when 60 man rosters have to be finalized and submitted.

    • willedav said, on June 27, 2020 at 7:49 am

deadline 3 PM central time. Note, team does not have to fill all 60 slots.

      • chipower9 said, on June 27, 2020 at 10:41 pm

Per an interview in The Athletic, Z was saying they would probably provide only 57 or so names, so they have a little flexibility if they want to add a FA.

  4. alleykat69 said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:04 am

Willied, So I assume all 40 players on your 40 man roster are eligible first. How does the the other 20 players fit in?Because if some players not on the 40 man roster make the team, someone has to drop off the roster right are wrong?

    • willedav said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:34 am

Nah. check out the MLBTR column AK. It’s complicated but there are rules in place for those on 40 man. they can put the new guys Bishop wilson etc. on 60 man and have them work out in Sac.

  5. Flavor said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:12 am

Good luck with all the raking he won’t be doing at oracle. Dude is on the downside of his career probably trying to make up for his diminishing power with all sorts of tweaks to his swing. I really hope we sign him, the victory laps I shall take will be glorious

    • alleykat69 said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:24 am

Yeah but that’s not a problem BF,the Giants still have several players your describing like that..

  6. djloo27 said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:28 am

A lot of fans are under the impression that Ray Fosse’s career was destroyed by the Pete Rose All Star game collision. Not really true…

    https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/ray-fosse/

    • willedav said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:44 am

thx Loo good read. He had hard luck career; the Rose play was brutal. Getting 2 WS rings with A’s of that time very special. Fosse gets lot of grief locally because his style of broadcasting is pretty boring, but class guy.

  7. Winder said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:30 am

The last thing the Giants need is a ‘look at me guy’ during this rebuild. It takes away from a team building attitude. i doubt Z wants him anyway. The media would love it but they love all controversies. Shore up our minor leagues, dump as many older players as we can afford, and make the competition full scale for all positions. This year could be a blessing for a team like ours, we got nothing to lose.

    • djloo27 said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:45 am

Our older players are un-dumpable, Winder.
      Who’s gonna take ’em?
I wouldn’t mind some deals in which “bad” contracts are swapped out, but those rarely seem to happen…

      • djloo27 said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:48 am

If you mean eating contracts, it’s just not the Giant way…

      • Winder said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:54 am

No, it looks like we are gonna eat some contracts no matter what. I was just meaning to do what we can to stay as young as we can for the moment.

    • snarkk said, on June 27, 2020 at 11:45 am

      With you on that, Winder.
Use this abomination of a season to check out the talent in house. Nobody’s watching in the stadium, no need to create controversy to draw butts into unsittable seats with cardboard cutout fans in them…

    • chipower9 said, on June 27, 2020 at 10:45 pm

Agree. But I think you could still do that, and add a FA bat to DH (maybe even play some OF).

  8. Winder said, on June 27, 2020 at 8:56 am

By keeping some of the older guys and playing out their contracts is essentially money being eaten, imo.

  9. Carstie Clausen said, on June 27, 2020 at 9:58 am

Starting pitchers with good track records are always fungible assets–perhaps especially in this weird attenuated season. Coming to mind immediately are Smardj and Cueto.

Currently, following Berrios, the Twins do not possess a solid #2 or #3. After maybe 4-5 starts either of those veteran SF starters could draw interest from Minnesota IF they have pitched well. Possibly a “bad contract” player could be added to a swap where the Twins would include one good prospect and two or three could-bes. There may well be additional competitive teams needing for a better than average starter, should they feel they are otherwise well-positioned to grab a title.

This entire scenario would not precede or closely follow the starting-gun…say around halfway into the season when the good, the bad and the ugly among competition levels will have more or less sorted themselves out and certain outfits start looking around for rotation upgrades.

  10. willedav said, on June 27, 2020 at 10:12 am

Twins and Tribe have easiest schedules according to F/G. As far as Giants dumping off SPs, I think that was the plan for Gausman and Smyly should they have done well; both would be lot less expensive than Smrdz or Cueto. Cueto does have another year left on deal unlike the others who would only be rentals.

Hey Z managed to get Dubon and Davis for Poms and Dyson, along with a Braves prospect for Melancon and them taking on rest of his contract. So I guess anything is possible.

Even during the 3-in-5 championships, leftfield was always a patch-up job. Burrell, Blanco, Ishi, etc.

  13. xoot said, on June 27, 2020 at 1:38 pm

Any gifs out there of the times puig caught a fly ball in deep RF and then, not knowing that the inning was over, fired a 90 mph strike to 3B? After a couple of those, Juan Uribe just made it a habit to wait on the field in those situations, to protect his teammates jogging into the dugout. Fuck that guy.

    • xoot said, on June 27, 2020 at 1:55 pm

also, puig’s stats in SD are very similar to his stats in SF, although the China Basin OPS is higher because a few more of hits here were XBs. But all those stats go back to when he was a brand new offensive force. The olden days.

xoot, the Puig gifs I found hilarious were from i think 2014 playoffs vs. StL. Puig got 3 hits in 12 ABs…and struck out 8 times, mostly waving at breaking balls off the plate. 2013 playoffs vs. same team he went 5-22 with 10 Ks and same result as Cards zapped LA.
dunno how to find them but good stuff 34 ABs 18Ks lick this

Puig to Giants makes absolutely no sense. This *season*, if it even happens, might be worth actually trying to win for teams that are near the top probabilities of contending. For the Giants, who obviously are not, it should just be a long spring training, see what they’ve got. As others have said, adding Puig just takes at-bats away from younger players the team needs to see everyday. Ya’ll were saying awhile back that any team winning it all in such a shortened season makes that win worthless, not even an asterisk. Holds true for the Giants, too. This season should be for watching, enjoying, and planning for next year. Puig does nothing for that.

    • Flavor said, on June 27, 2020 at 7:45 pm

100% agree. I’m still rooting for it for my victory laps.

    I just read this from a Houston paper . . .

“Every MLB team is about to play 102 fewer regular-season games than normal. But both warring sides are reportedly cool with allowing 16 of the league’s 30 clubs into the playoffs — six more than last season, 12 more than in 1993 — which means 53.3 percent of the league will qualify for the 2020 postseason after playing about two months’ worth of games.

This year’s World Series champion will have the legitimacy of a video game winner in a fantasy sports world.”

Yep, that about sums it up. A sham.

    • xoot said, on June 28, 2020 at 2:24 pm

I immediately thought of the 93 season when I saw Zumie’s post above, about most sports fans. I think every baseball fan discounts 81. 95 is asterisked for a few reasons. But many remember 93 with both disappointment and justifiable outrage. It’s not that hard to understand that some championships are worth more than others. So no sensible baseball fan is going to consider 2020 a legit season or post season. It will all be sui generis. But at least it will be live baseball with prospects and vets alike playing. That won’t necessarily be sham. imo. Let’s see.

I think they’re sticking with the same playoff format as in recent years, Blade – unless I’m mistaken.
There was a time when the NHL had 21 teams and 16 made the playoffs (about 76%).

As far as the WS, the way it’s looked at might depend on who’s in it.
If it’s the heavily favored teams like Dodgers-Yanks it could be considered more legitimate

Seriously, why is everyone curious about seeing baseball being played? Love of the game? You like to watch train wrecks? Car accidents? You’re curious about whether the Giants – on a reduced schedule – can shoot out to the head of the pack and make the playoffs? Or, even win the World Series?

Almost all Flappers are down with having a season, right? If you our satisfied with 60 games, would you have been satisfied with 50 games? 40 games? 30 games? My Senior League (14-16 age group) team played 12 games I think. Would you be okay with that?

Me? I think this is an abortion of the game I love. Yeah, I will watch – but it has zero credence with me . . . even if the Giants luck out and get in the playoffs or heaven help us, we win the World Series. Personally, if the Dodgers are ever going to win the big one, I hope they win this fucked up, watered down, piece of shit, 2020 season and World Series. Jail records show Toles appeared to be homeless when arrested Monday on the misdemeanor charge. His bond was set at $500 and records on Saturday showed that Toles is no longer a current inmate at Monroe County jail. He is scheduled for arraignment Thursday.
“We are unable to comment,” team spokesman Joe Jareck said Saturday.”

  39. willedav said, on June 28, 2020 at 4:00 pm

Blade, I think for Giants this season is very important; not for how many Ws they rack up or for older guys but to gain some ML experience for all the others. It’s good for their younger prospect guys that would have been in minors to at least get some time in as part of taxi squad working out and maybe even playing other teams. This will allow the guys a little farther away like Bishop Ramos Luciano etc. the same op.

It’s also important for Dickerson Dubon Yaz (.500 slugging last year, fluke or not) and Davis, plus guys they picked up like Wilmer Flores to show Kapler how they fit in to bigger picture next year.

Kapler has a brand new staff and can get a look at who/what he has and give Z/Harris his evaluations going forward. Not playing at all this season he gets none of that and Giants are just that much farther away from being decent. I’ll watch, definitely. Still mostly worried about pitching, especially SPs. Again interested to see how Kapler handles it and how he uses what he has (or doesn’t) in pen too.

    • willedav said, on June 28, 2020 at 4:02 pm

My godson texted me got refund on his Padres season tickets. He’s glad baseball is back but told me he’d be pissed if Pads got in the playoffs after all these years and he didn’t get chance to go.

    • blade3colorado said, on June 28, 2020 at 4:39 pm

Good take Willie. I agree about this being good experience for Kapler (evaluate his roster, as well as get his “feet wet” so to speak as manager), and likewise, excellent experience for some of our youngsters.

  40. willedav said, on June 28, 2020 at 4:09 pm

Btw, something i read about Ramos on F/G evaluations (which are excellent btw under “prospects”) is that he’s bulked up to where he might not be CF. Plus they question the ability of Luciano to defend adequately enough as middle IF, so he might wind up as corner OF too.
So CF could be the issue—can Yaz handle it on full time basis? will Davis get a shot? If you stick Dubon out there what does that do to the IF? Could he learn it well enough playing occasionally in a platoon vs. LHP?

we saw some bulk on Ramos last sept. I was surprised. But his 2019 ops was 1.000. 😉 Let’s see wtf they have top to bottom. Let em play. For a while.

Seriously, why is everyone curious about seeing baseball being played?”

I mean, because baseball is rad? I don’t get caught up in legitimizing championships the way everyone else here seems to do. Barry Bonds, who we all love, is part of our legacy. It’s a 60 game season, it’s obviously a joke in terms of legitimacy and if the Dodgers won it all I’d laugh my ass off.

But if you’re telling me I get 60 days of baseball to play at draftkings and watch the Giants do who knows what in a fucking 300 yard quarter horse race where anything can happen goddamn sign me up. I’m all in….

MLB has one of those silly stories they do now and then: one hitter to watch for each team in the supposed new season. For the Giants, it’s Hunter Pence. Mainly because the DH will be used. I want to watch baseball as much as anyone, but if Pence is MLB’s choice for the one Giants batter to watch this season………. That’s just a lazy article. I wanna see Davis, Dubon, other newbies…. it’s the only point to having this *season*.
