A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Poll Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 29, 2020

Interesting poll I just ran across at espn.

“In the poll, 77% of respondents who said they were baseball fans expressed support for the 60-game season, with 23% opposing it. Of all sports fans surveyed, 73% supported and 27% opposed MLB’s plan.”

I don’t think Flappers would crest 50% but let’s see. I haven’t done a poll in years let’s see if I remember how to do it.

    Fuck,
My father really needs your support, which is why he asked me to reach out and offer you ONE MORE CHANCE to get on the right side of history with us.

For the NEXT HOUR, if you make your FIRST contribution of ANY AMOUNT, you’ll automatically reach VIP status and become a member of the Trump VIP Club – it’s that easy.

This exclusive offer expires in ONE HOUR, Fuck. After that, you will permanently forfeit your potential status as a Trump VIP.

  2. Carstie Clausen said, on June 29, 2020 at 7:48 am

How could you end up on the “right side of history” if you woke up on the left side of the bed. Of course none of that really matters if you simply don’t give a fuck.

  3. alleykat69 said, on June 29, 2020 at 7:48 am

Send in a Buck from Fuck, só it puts you back in high status with the Trump VIP Fuck Club!

  4. Carstie Clausen said, on June 29, 2020 at 7:50 am

Fuckin A. But if you’re phishing you might say “fuck off”, particularly if you reside in Canuckistan where they tend ti spell it chuck.

  5. Carstie Clausen said, on June 29, 2020 at 7:52 am

How the puck did I end up replacing that p with a c? All apologies, to each and every Chuck out there. Knowing and having had known several guys sporting that monicker, none of them deserve to get tight with that appeal to Fuck.

  6. willedav said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:11 am

Both sides still talking to sort out performance vesting options of some players contracts; yes 60 games is awful but at least we have couple months to see baseball almost every day. Wonder how many day games SF plays.
    .
Puig apparently had some offers, but i imagine they might be similar to what Pablo will sign, which is minors deal for X million. Puig probably passed on these earlier, nothing else materialized. Nothing from SF, yet.
Active ML rosters will start at 30, 2 weeks later that drops to 28, 2 weeks after that to 26.

So: 2 Cs 6 IF 5 OF =13 position players. While couple more guys might make first group, last month of season will be final grouping. Anyone with options can go down to taxi squad but has to stay down for 10 days. If you are dropped from 60 I think that’s it, like DFA or waived.

Shocked by the early voting results

    • Stan Shell said, on June 29, 2020 at 11:34 am

BF, I voted yes to the question. I just don’t think it will be feasible.

  8. willedav said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:15 am

Giants and 4 others only teams MLBTR does not have 60 man foster for. arrggh

  9. Bozo said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:25 am

I voted no. Although I’m not a fan of the 60 game, I’m more against the rule changes that go with it.

    • Bozo said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:29 am

I’m also against the juiced ball and honestly, pretty much anything that Manfred proposes.

      • Carstie Clausen said, on June 29, 2020 at 10:04 am

Maybe Flav could create another poll with the question centering on “Manfred Must Go!”

      • alleykat69 said, on June 29, 2020 at 10:13 am

I’d be all over the removal of Manfred the TOOL!!
He has no business being the commissioner.Butchered the Astros&Redsox’s scandals, with no ball players reprimanded.Cannot get these owners and players together for atleast a half season of baseball. He’s a puppet that should of had his strings cut along time ago..

    • Carstie Clausen said, on June 29, 2020 at 10:02 am

Agree on opposition being primarily directed at rule changes. Baseball, to me, is somewhat of a sacred space. It is one of the last repositories of what is real and best in American popular culture. Tinkering with the game is disrespectful towards the greatest sport ever developed. My disillusionment began with the egregious Dink Hitter rule. Baseball is a game of an incredible set of balances. Any ill-considered modification is quite capable of disrupting the innate perfection of the finest of all athletic competitions.

  10. Winder said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:54 am

Yes on the baseball. However i would be just as happy watching 60 games between our AAA and our roster. At this point it’s just about the Giants for me.

  11. Flavor said, on June 29, 2020 at 9:07 am

after starting out 13/1 the gap has closed! 17/9 now. We’ll keep a careful eye on this all day. Maybe see if Nate Silver wants to chime in.

  12. snarkk said, on June 29, 2020 at 9:51 am

    I voted no.
One reason why is I think this thing could get started, but is going to collapse with infections across players and support people. That is worse than just foregoing the attempt. Since there are no fans in ballparks, this idea just benefits whom? The owners, the players and field management. The thousands of laid off workers associated with the ballparks’ operations don’t benefit. Unless I’ve missed news that they are all getting paid because of this…

  13. Macdog said, on June 29, 2020 at 9:55 am

I’m a yes, but I certainly won’t lose any sleep if the season doesn’t ever get started or completed. Like Bozo, I don’t like rule changes either, but then that just makes the the 60-game season even more *sinine.

  14. dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 29, 2020 at 10:31 am

I votes yes and support the 60 game season but to be honest I’m not really that into it and doubt I will watch much.

Flav – these letters seem to be escalating. Sounds like the MyPillow guy might show up at your doorstep at some point.

      lulz!

  15. unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2020 at 11:21 am

Sure, I’d like to see baseball. They’ve backed off on some of the stupid rule changes, but WTF. Roll with it as long as the changes aren’t permanent.

Play ball. Even if it starts, it’lll come to a crashing halt anyway if our public covid #s stay this crazy.

F/G said it appears there are still about 200 roster spots open on teams, as a few only listed 45 players. So seems inevitable Puig will wind up on one somewhere. Still think reason he hasn’t signed is mostly over $$$.
Here’s how much he has been paid over last 3 seasons, totaling $27 mil:
    $8.2 mil
    $9.2 mil
    $9.7 mil
like the country song says, How can we miss you if you won’t go away?

    • Bozo said, on June 29, 2020 at 1:05 pm

Dan Hicks wrote, “How Can I Miss You If You Won’t Go Away?” and performed it with The Hot Licks and the Lickettes. Loved this line –
“Out of three billion people, why must it be me?
Oh, why, oh, why won’t you cut me loose?
Just do me a favor and listen to my plea
I’m not the only chicken on the roost”

      • unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2020 at 3:48 pm

They were a mainstay in the 70s SF club scene. Saw ’em a bunch of times.

      • Bozo said, on June 29, 2020 at 5:04 pm

That they were Unca. I was playing in a vocal swing band at the Sweetwater way back when and Dan was sitting at the bar. We were told he could be pretty rude when he was drinking, but he was nice to us.

Are better yet sign Puig and have him pitch to Bum! Now that would be must see entertainment!!

  20. willedav said, on June 29, 2020 at 1:06 pm

MLBTR has Giants roster up. 51 total 25 pitchers 4 Cs 10 OF 12 IF. Bailey and some other draftees haven’t signed yet. Zach Green in there Bart Ramos Luciano.

  21. Carstie Clausen said, on June 29, 2020 at 1:07 pm

Looks out all you lefties!!! Maria Guardado just let it slip. JOE MCCARTHY is among the outfielders listed by the Giants among the 51 choices for their 60-man. Maria writes for MLB.

    • unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2020 at 1:18 pm

Tail Gunner Joe is our new OF hope?

    • xoot said, on June 29, 2020 at 4:35 pm

I was thinking about the famous old-time manager. The Giants prospect Joe doesn’t look like a great player in training. Some commentators puzzled over why the Giants put him on the 40-man after picking him up at the deadline last year. He front-loaded half a career’s worth of injuries in college and his big upside appears to be his ability to draw a walk. As to the long-departed former senator from Wisconsin — fuck that guy.

      • gianthead said, on June 29, 2020 at 4:57 pm

And his “commie hunting counsel” and of course Trump mentor Roy Cohn…

      • xoot said, on June 29, 2020 at 5:22 pm

well that unethical asshole also hunted homosexuals in government and hollywood, etc., for no good reason, even though he was himself gay. Whether the putrescent counselor really contributed to the education of the simple-minded trump we’ll never know.

  22. Winder said, on June 29, 2020 at 1:36 pm

Giants OF prospect Hunter Bishop tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday.
Giants president Farhan Zaidi made that announcement on Monday. Bishop is not part of the Giants’ player pool for MLB’s planned 60-game season and is presumably in self-quarantine at his offseason home. The 22-year-old outfielder was the 10th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.

    • Winder said, on June 29, 2020 at 1:37 pm

      And it begins.

  23. alleykat69 said, on June 29, 2020 at 2:17 pm

    • unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2020 at 3:38 pm

Bishop mere pawn in game of life.

      • Carstie Clausen said, on June 29, 2020 at 7:28 pm

Enter Bob Dylan once again. Early piece. Believe it may have been the “Ballad of Harttie Carroll”. Line was “only a pawn in their game”. Xoot might be up on the specifics.

“Former Giants right-handed pitcher Mike Leake became the first player officially to opt out of the 2020 MLB season.
Leake, now with the NL West-rival Arizona Diamondbacks, has put the well-being of himself and his family ahead of his career.
“During this global pandemic, Mike and his family had many discussions about playing this season,” Leake’s agent, Danny Horwitz, said in a statement on Monday. “They took countless factors into consideration, many of which are personal to him and his family. After thorough consideration, he has chosen to opt out of playing in 2020. This was not an easy decision for Mike. He wishes the best of luck and health for his Diamondback teammates this season and he’s looking forward to 2021.””

      More ex-Giants on the move.
Melky & Strickland to the Mets…

    • snarkk said, on June 29, 2020 at 3:37 pm

I’m not going to rip any player for deciding to play or not play in this short season effort. If you get this Covid S, regardless of age, there is no guarantee how it will play out for you…

    • alleykat69 said, on June 29, 2020 at 3:52 pm

Always thought Leake was a pussy even from his days with the Giants..
Good luck getting a job next season after D-backs cut you…

“Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals: The reigning 2019 World Series champion has decided to opt out because he has three young children, including a newborn, and his mother has multiple sclerosis, putting her at a higher risk for contracting the virus. The 35-year-old confirmed he is not retiring this year.”

    • zumiee said, on June 29, 2020 at 3:47 pm

Also pitcher Joe Ross of the Nats has decided to opt out of the ‘20 season.

Smart Berkeley/Oakland guy. Showed up helping in Oakland LL when my kid was playing there. Tyson’s brother. Their parents are medical professionals — a doctor and an emergency room nurse. Well informed, I bet.

  26. alleykat69 said, on June 29, 2020 at 4:07 pm

Not the best of times for the Ross brothers though.Giants recently released Tyson Ross..

    • xoot said, on June 29, 2020 at 4:19 pm

yeah, but Tyson’s cut didn’t surprise me after I saw him get lit up earlier this year on one of those Giants SIMs games. 🙂 😉 🙂

  27. gianthead said, on June 29, 2020 at 4:52 pm

Puig was projected to sign an $8-$10 mill deal for a one year deal. Giants can easily afford $4 mill which will roughly be the 60 game prorated salary.

  28. gianthead said, on June 29, 2020 at 4:54 pm

Sorry zum I once again disagree with you….that Osmond’s song you posted is truly awful!!!

    • zumiee said, on June 29, 2020 at 5:33 pm

I’ll agree the video is awful with horrific costumes and horrific stage moves. But the song itself sounds mediocre to me, and not completely terrible. And surprisingly hard-rocking, given that it’s the Osmonds.

      • xoot said, on June 29, 2020 at 5:39 pm

        who are the Osmonds?

  29. alleykat69 said, on June 29, 2020 at 6:19 pm

    Yeah I don’t relate to Donny&Marie Osmond..
Though I do relate to smart aleck Eddie Osmond
who played Eddie Haskell in Leave it to Beaver!
Eddie…Why Mrs Cleaver your kitchen always looks so clean.
    Mrs Cleaver..Well thank you Eddie
Eddie…Yeah my mom says you never work in there..

Eddie ..Speaking to Wally, If that dumbfounded brother of you wants to tag along tonight,,as he gets interrupted by Mrs.C…Hello Mrs.Cleaver I was just telling Wallace what a privilege it would be for Theodore to accompany us this evening!!!
And then of course Mrs.Cleaver famous line to husband Ward..
Ward you were alittle rough on the Beaver last night..

Thanks for the link, Loo. One that shocked, even more than surprised me was Jandel Gustave. If memory serves, he had one of the lowest ERA’s in their bullpen last season. Perhaps they know more about him than I do. Ya think?

  32. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on June 29, 2020 at 7:52 pm

“We’re going to start the 2020 season in a pennant race,” Kapler said. Uh… isn’t that likely how they view every season at the start? Is he clarifying this as a way of explaining why it seems so many young-uns and prospects aren’t going to get long looks this *season*?

    • djloo27 said, on June 29, 2020 at 7:58 pm

I took it like we’re tied for first with 60 games to go.
That’s a positive way to look at it!

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:06 pm

Yeah, maybe I’m looking at it all wrong. In this way, we’ve managed to avoid those often horrible June and July swoons……..

  33. mrsprtdude said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:08 pm

I like it. If were tied for 1st at the 100 game mark last year we might be saying..So we have a chance!
Not thrilled no back up cacher yet

  34. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:16 pm

“Many of the spots went to veterans who can fill gaps for Gabe Kapler right away.” This also kind of bothers me. Gaps? Gaps are all this team has, waiting to be *filled* by the young-uns who have upsides for the future. I’ve been ambivalent about this *season*, but figured it would be entertaining and useful to see “the future”. If Kap’s going to be playing these vets to fill gaps, players who have absolutely no relevance to the future of the team, it ain’t gonna look a whole lot different from the last couple of years.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:18 pm

Maybe just for this *season*, the team could change its name to the SF Gaps. Don Fisher can sponsor the team, kinda like the old little league days…. Take the team to Dairy Queen after every game. Fun times.

      • djloo27 said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:29 pm

Some years ago, Met broadcaster Howie Rose suggested the team change its name to the “Hat Tippers”.
He was annoyed that after tough losses they wouldn’t be upset – they would just say “you gotta tip your hat” to the other team…

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:21 pm

Managed, of course, by Gabe Gapler. Or maybe Gap Kapler. Ok, I’ll stop now….

  35. zumiee said, on June 29, 2020 at 8:57 pm

The mini-season will be marketed by all the teams as every team has a chance to get on a hot streak and win it all. Every team has a chance to win a cheapie championship.

  36. xoot said, on June 29, 2020 at 9:04 pm

the incentives this year will be wild. any team with sense will have opposing goals in mind as they charge ahead — try to win it all and yet try to get as much info about the guys on the roster as possible. I like the go for it approach. Reminds me of that part of Cool Hand Luke where our hero convinces every other guy on the road gang to go for it — shovel gravel over that tar as fast as you can, all day. Beat the man and his machines. Go for it. And then kick off early, as winners, at the end of one very good day.
