Unclear Guidelines
With Gov Newsom’s latest dousing of July 4th fireworks I’m still having a hard time understanding what stays open and what closes–even if just left with these same guidelines:
So can the Giants play at Oracle but all the bars close? There are food court spots all over the place, do they count as restaurants? Cause if they stay open but they are literally right next to the bars how does that work?
“Family entertainment”? What is that?
Zoos…..lqtm.
I don’t think any outside vendor stuff at the O is open. From guidelines for players, visiting team goes back to the hotel and gets room service only. Any pregame meal is packaged and that’s it. Players are discouraged from hanging around locker room too.
MLB was talking about this with couple players yesterday; saw interview with Delino DeShields (jr.). Weirder for him since he got traded in off season to new team and he said he was bad with names/better with faces. But everyone will have to adjust to new procedures; Kruk is quoted in Jenkins SF Chron column about how ritualistic ball players are and how much they are creatures of habit, and all that has to change dramatically.
I’m still trying to decipher Stix’s last response to my Snopes message on the last thread. Anyone have a tab of acid and/or a magic mushroom button(s)?
“deep state” conspiracy theories fall into the same category as super left or super right politics—they are better left not discussed on an SF Giants baseball blog.
“Family Entertainment”? Heard tell about that from some West Virginia fellers. But maybe I best not specify details on an SF Giants baseball blog.
Cue the banjos.
Fun fact: This song was #2 on the charts for the entire month of February 1973…
Trivia: What 2 songs was it unable to pass in order to get to #1 that month?
lotta great songs in 73.
my guess is ‘I got ants in my pants and i want to dance’ JB
Some pretty fine pickins on those banjos. None too slim. They had a pretty good bluegrass bunch at Elkton. Got invited to their practice sessions. Their fiddler was a concert violinist out in the world. He was smooth, but done did get into the spirit of the style. Alas, only one banjo, so they didn’t do this one. But their rendition of May the Circle Be Unbroken was highly evocative–nearly at a professional level.
That place was full of some pretty amazing talents right across the board. I would reckon that the average IQ there ranged about 20% higher across the board than that of administration and staff. “What the hell are YOU doing here?” “Me? You should talk!”
Probably 40% higher than here…
Vendors? There won’t be fans.
l doubt we see any ball this year.
I hate to say it, but I think you may be right Winder.
I like Loo’s comment from the last thread about using robo umps. This seems like a great situation to use them.
At least for balls and strikes, right?
Social distancing is the perfect excuse if they need one…
Yes even just balls and strikes. it’s the perfect scenario to try it out. This season is already gonna be bastardized enough. What’s one more thing?
Loo, pretty sure Crocodile Rock by Elton John was a big hit sometime in ’73, I’ll go with that.
You’re amazing, Mac! That’s one.
The other was actually #1 even longer than CR.
Female solo…
Gotta be Roberta Flack, Killing Me Softly?
Awesome!
Ha, this was the height of the WABC era.
I loved the little bell in Killing Me Softly.
The song still makes me think of Riva Ridge…
Checked through the stats on the off-season Free Agent pickups. Yuckk. Likely, more advanced metrics are involved, but judging from raw stats they’re a pretty unprepossessing lot. Drew Smily at something over 4 M’s. Eech. Looks like a space-filler to my estimation from available input.
Maybe Z n’ K’s accession to the one-round starters such as Romo’s role with the Rays may come into play. Overall there’s pretty fair talent in the pen and with a couple of leftover starters like D.Rod and Shaun Anderson, this approach could work for this rated “X” for Experimental. season
Giants ranked #23 in MLB power rankings.
Dodgers #1……again
Amazing they rated that high. There are only so many teams in the AL Central and the Twins, despite their dearth of decent starters, are definitely not rated below the Giants. The one good thing about this off kinduva season is that SF does not hafta go the full 162 with their current array. That prospect couldda been embarassing.
Twin’s are #4.
Teams below SF:
COL
FLA
K.C.
PIT
SEA
BAL
DET
Fortunately they do get Rox and M’s. On other hand are Dodgers Stros A’s Pads DBax, all legit playoff contenders. In the Strat O Matic simulation games SF is 22-41 after 63, 9 games back of Rox and dead last.
“Chicago Cubs left-hander Jose Quintana had surgery to repair nerve damage in his pitching thumb Thursday after he cut himself washing dishes.
Chicago did not have a timetable for his return.
Quintana cut his thumb at his home in Miami on Saturday and needed five stitches, according to the team. He had surgery in Chicago on Thursday morning.”
Was Affeldt drying the dishes?…
July 2 1963 is night of Spahn-Marichal 1-0 marathon ended by Mays HR in 16th. This is often called best game ever pitched, however…I read about this one as a kid: 1920 Joe Oeschger and Leon Cadore pitched 26 innings each in a NL game btw Dodgers and Braves 1-1 game that was called and ended in a tie.
Mays homered with 1 out in 16th on 42 yr old Spahn’s pitch #201. Marichal threw 227 in shutting out Braves LU with future HOF hitters Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron.
1920 still dead ball era. Correct? If so, no walk-offs likely but needed for manufacturing.
Mays had earlier thrown out a guy at the plate, Norm Larker in 4th. Chron writer Steve Kroner quotes Marichal, who didn’t want to come out of the game and Mays who told him he’d win it for him and later said he wasn’t trying to hit a HR in excerpts from John Shea’s “24” new book.
Hard to top this one for a 9 inning game…

Time of Game: 1:43
wow Koufax perfecto strikes out 14 Cubs in days of Williams Santo Banks. Hendley had come over from giants earlier that season. Traded to SF by Braves in deal ahead of previous season that sent Felipe away.
Looks like Bangkok has a plan for essential businesses – “Masks and bikinis as red-light districts reopen with new rules”
https://tinyurl.com/y9wqqjtj
Masks & Bikinis would be a good band name.
what a great story.
“‘I’m glad that I can come back to work in a job that I’m good at,'” said one dancer at the XXX lounge.
“Cockfighting and fishfighting venues remain closed,” however.
unfortunate none of us from US can further investigate…
There is a little gas station grill here that they call Biscuits and Porn. Always thought it would be a good name for an album.
Under which genre would “Biscuits n’ Porn” appear? Though not personally into Heavy Metal, one of my cats telepathy me about feline attitudes to the human race: “Monkey With Fire.”
Probably the Southern Rock genre would fit.
The Bangkok Post still thinks Patpong is the center of nightlife… hilarious. If you look at their business features, it’s always the same tired tripe from the same expats who they’ve tipped as experts for decades. Completely out of touch.
I was over on Soi Cowboy the same night, and it was a very different story. Far more photographers and vloggers on the prowl for something sensational or ever spacious than actual customers in bars. Masks were few and far between. Anyhow, that part of Bangkok nightlife is effectively dead until at least next week; most of the entertainers are still back home eating som tam and sticky rice.
Pretty clear why their assignments editor sent the reporter to Patpong now that I think of it. Over there you can get a masks-and-bikinis picture from the street whereas in Soi Cowboy (or Nana Plaza for that matter) you can’t.
Dirt, can you get your mind wrapped around the fact that Thailand, home of body fluid exchanges, has no known local transmissions while our Dear Leader is got us going about 50,000 of those today!
I can sympathize with poor BF trying to keep this a baseball/sports blog. But, when there is VERY questionable sports seasons up in the air it only makes sense to discuss why that is.
My county in Oregon is now a hot spot. Since 23 June 33 cases out of ~15K. 12 Yesterday.
OSF
OSF – I’m really try to avoid politics here but since you asked. Trump has shown us that he’s a nincompoop from day 1 so I am not surprised by any of this. It’s an epic fail of leadership at the highest levels and would be funny if it didn’t have such dire consequences for our nation. Turns out a country doesn’t just run on autopilot. Who knew?
Trump ain’t really in charge, but maybe that too, is a “conspiracy theory.” A few grams of lead can make for quite a change in one’s life.
stay safe…let’s hope death rate (key stat) continues to stay low where you are. Positive tests followed by appropriate response and recovery.
From all indications the death rate is sagging a bit while # of cases are soaring.
despite more early detection and improved treatment approaches, the death rate will rise if the hospitals get overrun
Stan- i don’t know about the virus but Thailand has rampant Aids or at least it used to have. You got to be real careful when over there.
Winder, my day of looking forward to being careful over in Thailand is in the rear view mirror.
Remember, OSF stands for Old Seals Fan. That was my ID back on the Splash.
I WAS careful, though, when I was on Bugi Street in Singapore in the 60’s.
Thanks anyway.
OSF
New guy here. Long time reader (almost every day, in fact), first time caller, etc. Just happen to be one of the hardcore Giants fans in Bangkok, too, so thought I’d jump in.
Believe me, the topic of “what saved Thailand?” has been been a big question for us expats, and mostly it comes down to (in most peoples’ views) a combination of things:
Thais don’t shake hands; a lot of people in Bangkok and other cities were already masked up because of the horrible pollution at the start of the year; heat and humidity tending to knock out virus droplets faster; Thailand has a large percentage of world class epidemiologists and virologists; a large percentage of the government have medical degrees because it’s prestigious so they’re more likely to listen to medical specialists; a quasi-fascist government that could put a state of emergency into place; and the big one in my view…
That even though Thailand gets huge numbers of Chinese tourists, the outbreak started in an industrial province of China. So those are the people more likely to be on package tours, staying in groups, all going on the same bus to the same hotels to the same attractions and mot mixing much with the locals. The early infections were a handful of immigration officers and tour guides and tour bus drivers and other than the later cluster at the boxing stadium, that was pretty much the peak of it.
I have absolutely no frame of reference for that part of the world, but I am glad to have you post. Hopefully you’ll post more often. Thanks for escaping from lurker land.
Shea says Giants signed 2nd round pick Schmitt 3b/reliever from San Diego St.
Also comp pick SS and pitcher drafted from LeMoyne.
Fuck,
Is there something I’m missing?
The Vice President invited you to have dinner with him on July 9th, but I noticed you haven’t entered to win yet.
There’s not much time left, and I know the Vice President will be disappointed if you miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The Vice President is going to pick a winner soon, Fuck.
Fuck,
The dishonesty from the media and their attempt to demean, harass, and slander anything related to my father and his administration is truly mind-boggling.
They’ll never stop coming after him, which is why we were really disappointed to see that you neglected to help us reach our End-of-Quarter Goal.
END-OF-QUARTER DONOR FILE
SUPPORTER: Fuck You
END-OF-QUARTER DONATION: NONE
What would you be advocating for or attacking if you espoused or rejected super left politics?
not sure I understand the Q, James
I have some sense of what it means to have morally objectionable far right politics and an idea of the groups/beliefs tied to those politics that are actually held by a not insignificant number of Americans. What’s the equivalent on the left?
Reality
I should say the current reality.
Unfettered capitalism, lawless greed, mass oppression, poverty! Come on, Fuck. Her father needs your help to continue the good work for four more years.
thankfully I still have a chance….
Fuck,
I convinced my father to give you another chance, which is why he’s decided to EXTEND your PERSONAL 500%-MATCH OFFER FOR 1 MORE HOUR.
We won’t extend your match offer again, Fuck. Don’t let the President down.
Wow, those last Drumpf missives are just short of saying pay up Fuck, or expect a visit from our contributor liaison — Luca Brasi….
Dear Fuck,
Don’t fuck with us.
Donnie Douchebag
aka Clownface von Fuckstick
Seems to me that both Clownface and mentally dissolving should be exiled to the mud-wrestling capital of Planet X. Excuse me, but it’s 90 degrees here and one entire Nordeast has fuddled my faculties.
The Wild Women of Wongo?
The equivalent? Well, antifa has been fucking hard with my former stomping grounds up in Portland, Oregon. I’d like all those guys to go fuck themselves.
I’m not sure what antifa stands for politically that’s based in morally objectionable or irrational ideology and which is also embraced by millions of other Americans. They are a tiny fringe coalition that specializes in public confrontation with the far right.
Are you guys serious, or joking about Antifa? No shit, as I sit here I am wearing a long sleeve black Antifa shirt.
That is NOT an organization that is based on some fucked up policy, James. In simple terms, they believe that if the Jews had resisted the Hitler lead fascists back before 1933 (remember Hitler’s Brown Shirts?) then the holocaust may not have unfolded the way it had. They are not anarchists, communist nor anti-democracy, anti-religion, they are ANTI- FAscists- -hence the name
BF, if you have been hearing that they are fucking around up here in Portland, you have been hearing bad shit. They stood off a bunch of gun-toting, MAGA hat wearers (and I’m sure some of them were good people). They show up where they feel that fascists are staging a rally like the Proud Boy march in Portland.
If you guys knew all this and I’ve fallen for a ruse
, OK you got me
OSF
OSF, my post was not anti Antifa. I was trying to point out that Antifa is in no way equivalent to, e.g., a heavily armed Coeur d’Alene militia group populated by racist ex-LA cops.
I would say people that want to defund the police not what that really means but they really want to do that, people like that
Cops are asked to deal with things they have no or hardly any training to deal with, so they end up killing people that should have been taken to the medical ward for 72 hour mental observation, and/or detox. Cops are not, but are tasked to be marriage counselors, mental health professionals. child social workers, etc. That should not be part of their job. And, stop funding acquisition of military vehicles and weapons for cops from the feds. They have done and are going to want to use them on us to justify that part of their budget…
Colossally inept government, malignant narcissism, nepotism, cronyism. Trump drained the swamp alright. And filled it with scummier sycophants than can be imagined.
Like putting Jeffrey Dahmer in charge of the Food and Drug Administration, you have Rick (what’s the DoE?) Perry as the Secretary of Energy, Ben (zzzzzzzzz) Carson in charge of HUD, lobbyists in charge of the industries they ran, blah blah blah.
The cookie cutter overview:
The modern Democratic party emphasizes egalitarianism, social equality, protecting the environment, and strengthening the social safety net through liberalism. They support voting rights and minority rights, including LGBT rights, multiculturalism, and religious secularism.
The GOP today supports lower taxes, free market capitalism, a strong national defense, gun rights, deregulation, capital punishment, and restrictions on labor unions; it opposes abortion.
If only it were that simple.
I don’t see how the NBA can continue with this “bubble” thing. Florida just went over 10,000 new cases in ONE day. The bubble better be airtight, else that thing is going to end up with lots of players infected. I don’t see how baseball is going to make their thing work — there is no “bubble”, the players come and go as they please, daily. I heard on radio today from one of the usual baseball talking heads (Rosenthal?) that players are describing the safety protocols as swiss cheese…
You guys are waking up. It CAN’T happen. The logistics are too tough. For football it’s ten times worse.
Sorry, I’m not happy either.
Cassandra AKA OSF
I know what’s happened in Portland and it is happening every night in Portland. I have friends who live up there who watch this bullshit unfold every night. And the Portland PD has their hands full, every night, arresting them.
I know Portland has to deal with the Antifa idiots more than most other places in the country. It’s got accepted there and they ran with it in a town that condones that type of counterculture. It’s too bad actually.
Snarkk, i totally agree with your 4:29 and I also agree with the true premise of *defunding the police*. Unfortunately, I really hate the slogan. It’s just going to get used by Trump to scare old, dim people into voting for him. The white moderate, as Dr. King taught us years ago, will always choose order over justice. That’s never going to change, btw.
I can’t really keep track of all these *match offer 500%*things but I’m pretty sure I’ve let three *hour left* deadlines go TODAY alone lol
Fuck,
I don’t want President Trump to think he’s lost your support, which is why I’ve decided to EXTEND your PERSONAL 500%-MATCH DEADLINE FOR 1 MORE HOUR.
This is your last chance, Fuck. After this hour, your 500%-Match offer will PERMANENTLY EXPIRE.
it could be time to unsubscribe from Dickstain’s emails. There’s too many a day and, frankly, I’ve gotten kinda bored with the content which in the beginning amused me.
Can you start over as “Cunt”?
Please???
what do you mean? I’m still marveling at how you got that word thru the filter. Sneaky.
The filter knows me, Flavor…
In 10 seasons (1966-1975), Gaylord Perry pitched 3,084 innings!
Just had my first White Claw.
Not so good…
What’s a White Claw?
It’s flavored hard seltzer. This shit is everywhere here.
Budweiser and Corona have come out with it, too…
if we ever meet in person we are not drinking white fucking claw, just please make a note of that.
You ever been to NY?
just the airport a few times. I know, it’s odd that I’ve never been to NY
Same for me & SF.
One of my biggest failures…
Geez, you two should do a Flap BnB exchange for a few days….
maybe we split the difference and meet at Kentucky Downs. How’s your cat, man? Can you leave the house yet?
She’s doing good – a real battler.
I have to be home every 12 hours for her insulin shot…
I am ashamed to say I actually like White Claw. I would never drink it in public, but I have been drinking the shit out of it in our pool. I just wish the alcohol content was higher. The trick is to mix it with vodka instead of plain soda water.
lol, that’s the trick. If I’m gonna drink a girl’s drink the alcohol content must be adjusted
Hey Fuck, WHO is matching by 500% your potential contribution to the Dear Idiiot?…
they do not indicate that but I’m guessing there’s a few campaign finance laws getting bent there.
in that case, since it seems like you’ve been getting the same message for awhile now, why not see what’s in it for you beyond meeting someone.
White Claw sounds pretty bad.
Whatever happened to Zima ? — that S was nasty…
Loo as to your 8:30, other than watching Giants at the O like I did with Flap group this summer, I haven’t been to SF in 10 years. I know Oakland gal who owns a house and refuses to go into the City, at least on BART, if she can help it.
Chron stories online feature lot of griping from locals—inability to make dent in homelessness despite years of $$$ spent, car break ins, before Covid traffic and parking, gentrification that has turned funky neighborhoods with cool unique restaurants into expensive upscale haunts of the nouveau riche tech crowd yada yada.
Really, it seems like an impossible city to govern. there will never be enough revenue no matter how heavily citizens and businesses are taxed, to provide enough services please everyone.
Where do you live? I thought on the Peninsula…
I’m about 3-4 exits down freeway going south from San Jose Airport, off Hwy 17 just past 280 interchange. Used to be 15-20 minutes north on Peninsula; when I went to Flap game caught train in Sunnyvale and drove home from there (long night).
Coaching basketball in 2000s I was in SF a lot of weekends, especially up to middle of May. There were tournaments at Japanese Center on Sutter by the Peace Plaza, or in gyms in Richmond and sunset high schools—Lincoln Washington Lowell and St. Ignatius. Fun times good people.
