A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Posey’s Priorities

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 11, 2020

It seems everyone is on board with Buster sitting out there season because come on how are you going to question THAT decision. It would be interesting to see all of our reactions had a full season been on the table and were he still been in his prime….

Have we heard from Kap on his thoughts re: Bart?

You’d think he’d want to play him, right?

I don’t think it will be Kapler’s call on the catching situation more like Zman.
I will hate this signing but don’t be surprised if Zman with his tiesto this player and knowing he would prefer a experienced catcher if he signs Russell Martin ( who sucks) só Bart could get some extra mentoring from..

    • Flavor said, on July 11, 2020 at 8:28 am

well it might not be his call but you’d think he has some input. And my point was that Kap doesn’t have a lot of time to hang around. Losing a year of development for Bart is still pissing me off this morning.

  2. gianthead said, on July 11, 2020 at 8:22 am

We have nothing to lose going with Bart as our opening day starter (assuming he is conversant with the pitching staff and pitch calling) and a journeyman backup for mentoring and occasional starts. Who has been catching for the intrasquads?

Would be a bitchin DH though, early golf and a Giants game to boot!!

With the Flap universe someone has got to have some grease…

  5. gianthead said, on July 11, 2020 at 8:51 am

And call me a homer, but I think with the likelihood of unorthodox use of a pitching staff that we will see in this truncated season that our current pitching staff is built to exceed with a bunch of pitchers going 3 or 4 innings max. If we can survive that opening 4 series in LA and then AZ and maybe sneak out some other early wins, I think they can sustain being competitive through the first 30-40 games and then I think anything could happen…I think Dubon is going to be starting in CF on opening day…not sold on Jaylin yet…

    • djloo27 said, on July 11, 2020 at 10:17 am

Sounds ok. Now all we need is Affeldt, Casilla, Lopez, Romo and Wilson in their prime…

Nothing is as it seems this year. There is no precedent for actions in today’s sports world or for much of any world. Misdirection and lethargy seem to be the call of the day. Pandemic rules. I would just like to see some games also.

Farhan is making the ultimate straw man argument…as Flav points out

  8. willedav said, on July 11, 2020 at 10:10 am

He (Z) said similar yesterday. “A guy hits the ball 430 feet. That’s all well and good, but it’s no substitution for getting the 100, 200, 300 at bats you might get in AA or AAA and getting a sense that a guy is capable of handling ML pitching on a day in, day out basis.”
Kap’s just taking orders—Z/H making the decisions on who is on Big 30.

    • Flavor said, on July 11, 2020 at 10:23 am

But he’s not going to be getting 300′ minor league at bats. There is no minor league season lol

      • willedav said, on July 11, 2020 at 11:55 am

nor for any other prospects, like Ramos. But highly doubt they are coming up before last couple weeks either, if at all.

    • djloo27 said, on July 11, 2020 at 10:26 am

The statement makes no sense to me.
What does hitting one ball 430 feet have to do with his amount of minor league experience?

      • Flavor said, on July 11, 2020 at 11:09 am

he’s saying the dude has raw power but it needs to be developed. But there is no minor league season. So….

  9. Winder said, on July 11, 2020 at 10:12 am

Good article on Posey and the Giants organization on the Athletic this morning. It basically says that the whole organization is behind Posey and the family values he is showing behind his decision to opt out.

  10. dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 11, 2020 at 10:49 am

Hector Sanchez’s career line is .238/.273/.367/.639 and he keeps finding work. Is Bart capable posting the same if not better? I think so. He caught most of the staff last spring and it’s not like he’s newly manning the catching position so I don’t know why that’s an issue but if it is relay the pitches to him from the dugout. Plus, after the lay-off from “normal” spring training pitchers are not coming out of the gate at peak performance. It’s 60 games/~100 abs for a club going nowhere – play him!

  11. alleykat69 said, on July 11, 2020 at 11:26 am

    Agree Dirt..
WTF are they drafting Catchers #1 back to back years if they never intend to use them at the position?
Oh we need to see Bart be more versatile, play some 3rd maybe some left field?
Are they going to do the same with Bailey? Kid keep a 1st base glove in your locker cause it’s all about versatility in the bigs even though we drafted you as a CATCHER!!!

Good organizations figure it out right away, the Reds Bench,Texas Rodriguez,Detroit Parrish& Freehan,St Louis Molina&Simmons,Dodgers Mike Scoisca ,Yankess Berra& Munson, Boston Fisk many many more examples out there.Just wish the Giants would get they’re heads out of they’re asses and use the player they DRAFTED him for at a position they extremely need to fill right now!!

    • gianthead said, on July 11, 2020 at 11:37 am

There was talk on draft night that Bailey may be used primarily at third if Bart is the lock down catcher…

I’m not raining on Posey’s parade, but I have a question.
If his adopted babies are going to be in the NICU for at least another two months, or in hospital for 4, which is what I thiink were the facts mentioned yesterday, then what is the actual threat to them if Buster plays? It’s not likely they will be in his house with him until October or November. Maybe I’m missing something crucial here on timing…

If this season gets played at all, I’m all in to playing Bart. If he fails, so what. It’s a learning experience, then. The other option is to play these near 30-year journeyman dudes who I never heard of, and have no or little MLB game experience. What’s the point of that — it just becomes a real exhibition, except nobody with a future is getting better…

    • Winder said, on July 11, 2020 at 1:06 pm

Totally agree. In a sense this is just gonna be an extended spring training anyway. You can learn a lot in 50/60 games just by watching how they play. it would be better than starting Belt the day after his boot comes off.

Probability factoring here. So the season begins with one scrubbini behind the plate and after a couple weeks he’s batting 9th with a B.A. of .183. Next up, Scrubbini #2 for another couple weeks, minor uptick at .202, but with exactly one xbh. Fans and press start ragging. Gets noisy. So the trainbust caves and brings in Bart.

He’s so-so okay at calling the game, generally decent defensively and ups the average to .237, adding several doubles and dingers to the blend. Fan-base is pleased but not quite delighted. Hey, the kid’s getting his feet wet in The Show. A couple of his dingers are moon-shots. A sub-set of fans are pretty happy. So what’s to lose? Getting that experience at the highest level is what he needs. Duh.

Speaking of the free agent clock, it’s likely the free agent clock will get knocked down from 6 years to 5 in the new collective contract, and the loophole will be removed that gave the owners sort of a 7th year.

Still amuses me to hear management et al (fans too, I guess) talk about playing for wins this season* and chances for post-season*. Just once I’d like to hear a GM or manager admit that it’s ridiculous to think of it as anything more than a long training exhibition to get set up for next year and beyond. Maybe I wouldn’t feel that way if the Giants were poised to begin another 3-in-5 kind of run, but… they’re not. I would love to see some baseball, but It probably won’t matter: the way things are going with Corona in the US, unless the teams are all isolated under a big dome (think Truman Show), I doubt this season* will get very far.

I gotta say, it is so surreal having a summer without baseball. There was a time, late teens early 20s that I didn’t give a shit about baseball, I’m not quite to that point but I’m also not jonesing for it this year.
Since the early/mid 80s Opening Day was my New Year and I managed to hit almost every Giants home opener until I moved to NC in 08. I had everything I owned (including my truck) shipped to the East Coast and I splurged on the Embarcadero Hyatt for my last days in SF as I waited for the opener. Flew out the next day (or was it a red eye that night?). When the 09 season was going to start I wanted, no I needed, to see the home opener. Ordered up MLB TV, made some Polish dogs, had some Sierras iced down and was the happiest guy on the OBX. For years this worked well for me only interrupted in 2011 when I flew out to SF, so I could see them raise the championship flag on Opening Day. Man. what a day that was.
So jump to 2020, Not sure about the season, I canceled my MLB package. Now the home opener is on July 28, just saying that is weird, but probably weirder than that is that I’m not manic about it. MLB offered me the 60 game package for $45.18 (the eighteen cents really bugs me more than it should, but it does),even for that low, low price I just can’t pull the trigger on it. I don’t even want a cutout of myself out there, I guess I don’t want to put that cardboard at risk. I don’t know, even though I’m still reading about the Giants and MLB, maybe I’m just opting out half assed like, do you think the Giants would put a half cutout of me out there for the opener?

  39. alleykat69 said, on July 12, 2020 at 12:45 pm

I just want baseball to happen, for sake of fans and the players. I miss it and if season gets off the ground I’ll watch. I don’t think Z had very good off season with guys he picked up and other than their LA bro connection don’t see any reason why Kapler should have hired. His coaching staff, well we have to see.

But the “seeing” is very important to Giants. Position players need to show mgmt what they can do whether it’s in platoon role or not. and Z needs to see where they are and get some feedback on the non-30 prospects. Giants pitching could look very different next year–putting some of them in different roles could be very good move during this season. Again, mgmt needs to see who can do what and how viable prospects might be.

Great story back in 67-68? about him figuring he wasn’t going to play in this one game ad was starving and asked some vendor for a couple of dogs loaded with mustard. And of course he’s gets called up my manager Mayo Smith to PH and hits a double that he needed to slide on, and they’re was dogs buns and mustard scattered all over second base as both teams were howling in laughter, all but Mayo Smith!! Maybe he wouldn’t have been to pissed off if he put some mayonnaise on the dogs, but who does that??

Frank Robinson admits that while he was managing Cleveland (years after Carty’s great seasons in ATL), Carty was the guy who gave him the most problems. Wouldn’t listen to him, bad mouthed him to others, yada yada

    Here’s a trivia?
What promising big league player career was cut short
by a case of vertigo that was believed to have started up after
a hunting trip and he ended up with a deer tick bite?

Not sure about the promising part of it, but I do remember Nick Esasky having to retire related to vertigo. He had left the Reds and joined the Red Sox, seem to remember a good season or two but then he was gone….

By “not sure about the promising part”, I meant that Nick had already had a pretty good career at that point, if he’s the guy you’re talking about….

Amazing that either of these teams could go all the way…

    Winner Winner Chicken Dinner P/A!!
Yeah I would say it was more than a promising career for Nick cut short by dizziness..

Yes, I remember as a Bostonian at that point being pretty excited about him joining the Sox. Some of his hits absolutely tattooed the Wall in left. Remember some kind of promotions of “Nick at Night” during evening games. Was bummed when he had to retire early. Good pure hitter for awhile there.
