A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Jazz Hands

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 15, 2020

Well, now that Puig has found a home and Bass Baldy has been properly remembered, what do you guys want to kick around today?

I do wonder how hard Z went after Puig. The internet is full of the usual bluster about the Giants going *hard* after him. But the Giants get used a lot in those situations. I used to think that secretly Sabean was cool with not getting a hitter as long as he got to say how hard he went after him when it was all said and done.

Name a long lost Flapper you miss who doesn’t post here anymore. I’ll start:

While some think that the catcher position is no big deal and suggest the Giants go with the Tromps and Heinemans of the world, I still want to see Bart.

This is going way back (those who no longer post here): ferrethead. ewisco, too.

I looked it up and Sun Trust Park is ranked right in the middle in terms of bombs given up. I think I had that opinion (that it was a joke park) because I play daily fantasy and the weather does impact that park a lot. There are some humid nights where the ball absolutely flies out of there. Either way, it’s a great hitting spot for Puig when you consider the LU he’ll be in and the parks he’ll get to hit in (Sun Trust, Phillies, etc…). There aren’t too many *Oracles* on the Braves schedule.

    • gianthead said, on July 15, 2020 at 9:15 am

Plus games in Miami where he lives off-season and probably more Cuban Puig fans show up than Marlin fans…how does New Shea and the Nats Park park analytics play?

As you suspect Nats Park gets bloody humid but not as bad as RFK but does not have the same Reds Yanks Phillies hitter park feels…the numbers will be interesting to hear about.

EWisco. Last time I saw him was at Flap#1 or 2 maybe at First and Main? one of his boys was playing HS football as kicker I think. He was on Chuck’s blog too iirc.
fwiw, story on nbc sorts bayarea site saying Kapler’s evaluating 3 guys for 2 spots as C. um, guess who ain’t one of them?

    • alleykat69 said, on July 15, 2020 at 7:49 am

Yeah I heard that too Willied. Something like Heineken was pretty much a lock being a switch hitting catcher, and the battle would be between Tromp&Brantly for the second spot(Brantley has the most BL experience if that matters much)while the loser may end up on the traveling taxi squad team, are that haven’t completely ruled out ging with 3 catchers to start out with. Its disappointing for sure that Bart’s name is not really in the mix..

  4. alleykat69 said, on July 15, 2020 at 7:40 am

Zman pretty much stated all along he wasn’t interested in Puig.Yeah like any GM I’m sure he did his due diligence on him but that was about it.He basically was saying he had to many outfielders he needed to sort out AB’s for between,Davis,Slater,Dickerson,Yaz,Hambone,Ramos,Pence,Duggar,Ruf.The only one he has eliminated for now and has no future left in the organization is Shaw his personal whipping boy..

FanGraphs is doing annual Positional Power Rankings by team, projected WAR this short season.
So far, Giants rank dead last in NL at 2b and C, 14th and 13th at SS and 3b. Ouch
1b with Belt/Flores they were 9th NL better than I would have thought.

Giants add OF Jose Siri to 60-man pool. Siriously? Check out his stats on MLBTR. Siriously making me wonder where these bright ideas come from.

    • Bozo said, on July 15, 2020 at 10:29 am

Stix, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten guys like Kratz, Gerber, Corbon Joseph, Connor Joe, Reed and Aaron Altherr from last year? those six guys got 7 hits out of 96 ABs. I probably shouldn’t have included Altherr, since he only had 1 AB but I’m sure that was a memorable K. Good times.

      • Carstie Clausen said, on July 15, 2020 at 1:30 pm

Bozo: Was unavoidably detained last year so could keep up only minimally. Maybe they just like to do in-house scouting. Hoping they didn’t use those guys in game on the line situations.

      • Bozo said, on July 15, 2020 at 2:13 pm

Mostly April. Two of those guys started for us on Opening Day. The start of the season was a revolving door and Zaidi was on a waiver wire binge. I guess my point is that, Siri might just end up being a movable part.

I can see the jokes coming in.
Hey Siri who the fuck is this guy?

Another stash signing for Zman, hoping he turns out better then Kokomo Joe, are Reed?

  14. unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2020 at 11:00 am

John Tamargo, who may or may not have been the real John Tamargo.

Conner Joe from Kokomo will always hold a special place in my heart, along with with Michael Reed as the least likely guys to ever get more than a tiny sniff of the bigs, yet were in our opening day OF. His Giants line of 8 billion, with 6 Ks, is awesome.

Screen Shot 2020-07-15 at 10.58.38 AM

Yeah, the Z_man was in full-blown line up roulette mode, and it was kinda funny where the wheel stopped on opening day.

  15. gianthead said, on July 15, 2020 at 11:02 am

If Dubon is our primary CF, I can see Avelino being the backup at SS and Solano starting at 2b when Flores.plays first…

  16. alleykat69 said, on July 15, 2020 at 11:11 am

Still not sure why the Giants are dickin around with Dubon?
He showed good skills playing second base and he could easily play some SS
    as Crawdaddy’s main backup..

The President really wants to meet you in Texas, Fuck. He needs the advice of his top supporters, which is why he really wants YOU to be there to discuss some critical campaign strategies.

We’re emailing him the entry list soon and we know he’ll be looking for your name on there.

Contribute ANY AMOUNT IMMEDIATELY to win a chance to meet President Trump and to get on the next list he sees.

      • snarkk said, on July 15, 2020 at 3:51 pm

        Undoubtedly yes.
        Hey, the cultists follow orders.
After Drumpf’s ludicrous statement on using Lysol and other disinfectants on or in your body to cure Covid, lots of dopes called into state health boards to ask about using Lysol, etc. against Covid. And, poison control centers got a spike in calls right after that about poisoning and injuries from Lysol and similar. Remember that older couple in Arizona, I think, that used a pool cleaner that sounded like chloroquinine, after Drumpf promoted it with virtually no scientific basis, and later said he actually used? One of them died. The cultists are friggin’ imbeciles…

  18. Carstie Clausen said, on July 15, 2020 at 1:41 pm

MLBTR has it that southpaw Jarlin Garcia has been medically cleared and back in camp. As a lefty, he had a keen 3.02 ERA last season–a rather valuable commodity. WAR was also decently low. Question: How was he acquired–trade or free agency? Odd the Marlins didn’t hang on. Nice piece for the bullpen. You can never have too many LH relievers.

  19. unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2020 at 1:53 pm

Loogies are a dying breed what with the 3 hitter minimum now installed.

    • willedav said, on July 15, 2020 at 1:59 pm

Yes, but if he records last out of an inning, I believe he doesn’t have to pitch any further even if it’s only batter he’s faced.

      • zumiee said, on July 15, 2020 at 2:00 pm

        That is correct.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on July 15, 2020 at 7:16 pm

If he would have had faced only one LHB, that would be a given. However, should the opposing team have two of them due in the inning, a loogie could dance the boogie.

  20. zumiee said, on July 15, 2020 at 1:59 pm

A look at Connor Joe’s AAA numbers the past two seasons show an OPS over .900 both seasons. Maybe ultimately he’s just a AAAA guy, but it wasn’t crazy to give him a try in the big leagues. He got a whole 16 plate appearances with the Giants.

    • Bozo said, on July 15, 2020 at 2:29 pm

As it turns out, Zaidi may have done LA a favor (if they are high on him). Since we didn’t keep him on the ML roster we had to send him back to LA and since he basically passed through waivers, they were able assign him to the minors without having to make any other moves.

      • alleykat69 said, on July 15, 2020 at 2:36 pm

Dodgers are só loaded in the outfield doubt if Kokomo ever sniffs a big league roster again..

    • unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2020 at 3:37 pm

0 major league ABs at age 26 isn’t an anomaly.

  21. xoot said, on July 15, 2020 at 2:19 pm

Zaidi and his staff sure did work that waiver wire. I can’t imagine that’ll be happening now.

I always enjoyed The Babbler. He could be disputatious, but he held no grudges. I believe he was either the first or the second person to refer to this place as The Flap. It was a photo finish and I don’t know who has the pics.

    • Flavor said, on July 15, 2020 at 2:59 pm

I’m not sure who called this place The Flap first but this great Flap vet seems to be the first to refer to all of you as Flappers

you gotta go back before 2010. The very early days, when people were straddling the old splash and your new blog. Was that 2009? I think so. When did you get going on that old google platform?

      • djloo27 said, on July 15, 2020 at 5:36 pm

I remember the Babbler from the Splash, but I don’t think he migrated here. His avatar(?) was Curly from the 3 Stooges. He was funny – knew his stuff – usually kept it brief, I think. Could be a real wise ass at times.
        That’s how I remember him anyway…

      • xoot said, on July 15, 2020 at 5:53 pm

He and I exchanged some posts about sailing. He definitely knew his stuff there. Among other things. The last post I remember seeing from him described an Occupy Oakland demonstration he attended where a young woman next to him got hit by a rubber bullet. That would’ve been about 2011. I’m sure he was on the Flap for a short while, in the very early days. The occupy post was probably on sfgate somewhere.

He’s activated a DOUBLE-ENTRY for his TOP supporters ONLY to win a chance to meet him at an upcoming event, but we noticed you haven’t used your offer yet…

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Fuck, and the President REALLY wants to meet you, so for ONE DAY ONLY, he has decided to EXTEND your DOUBLE-ENTRY offer.

RE: The new stupid rule putting the runner on second.
If the pitcher gives up a base hit that scores him to win the game, does he get tagged with the loss?
Can’t be. He didn’t put the winning run on…

    • zumiee said, on July 15, 2020 at 4:35 pm

The run doesn’t count on the pitcher’s ERA, but I don’t know about getting an L. That seems unfair.

      • alleykat69 said, on July 15, 2020 at 4:49 pm

Well somebody has to take the loss, are how is it balanced out in the standings ?
Let’s hypothetically say a team starts out with 5 straight extra inning games and loses them all, their 0-5 yet you look in the pitching column and they’re 0-0??? Just can’t be that way..

The only way that society and, as a microcosm of society, the baseball teams can stay uninfected is if the virus has been eliminated from the *community* …. society, meaning the literal community; baseball, meaning the supposedly contained environments created for this season*. Just using Vietnam as an example, things were not allowed to open up here until there were no new cases in-country for at least a couple of weeks. Here we are now 90 days into no new cases; for all intents and purposes, Corona has been eliminated from the community, so, we’re completely open here. (Note: that could change at any time; a few days ago, it was reported that 4 Chinese nationals who had entered the country illegally were “captured” and put in a quarantine center, but they climbed over the wall in the middle of the night and are now out there somewhere. Fuckers. Man, I feel sorry for them if “the people” find them before the police do). For baseball, theoretically it shouldn’t be a problem with players touching the same balls (haha) IF those balls AND all players have been isolated and effectively quarantined. Sweat flying around should even be ok under these theoretically safe conditions. Theoretically. Obviously, constant testing and tracing would be key.

    • xoot said, on July 15, 2020 at 7:47 pm

Here’s a minor-league game from last year that went to the 10th inning with a runner starting on 2nd base. The Augusta pitcher who gave up 3 runs in the 10th did indeed get the loss, so MLB will likely have the same ruling.

      • willedav said, on July 16, 2020 at 7:11 am

F/G ranks Giants LF platoon projections pretty low. They like Dick as power guy and at least ML average .760 OPS hitter who doesn’t K a lot, figure Pence is about done as .700 OPS type, and don’t care for Davis either as more of a 40+FV prospect. They did say that btw. LF and RF Giants should find out if he is type of player that can be part of next resurgence.
Slater gets better OB but not much more slugging than Pence or Davis, below .400.
