A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

…PLAY BALL!!!!!!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 22, 2020

Fun game last night. Can we please vote to never re-open the gates in right field again? If the ball gets that much more carry when they’re shuttered then let them stay shuttered. McCarthy’s ball went way higher than the other balls and that’s why his got “Oracled”. I’m tired of K/K joking about that. It’s not a joke it’s pathetic. When you hit a ball that far it should be a home run, period.

It’s July 22rd and we are finally getting some real ball.

Make it so.

Change in the walls will make some difference, not a lot, but some. A few more HRs that should be HRs is a good thing, notwithstanding the juiced balls…

  2. willedav said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:11 am

Mac did crush that. Just remember, walls moved in doesn’t only happen when Giants are up. And their pitchers don’t get to face other pitchers 2-3 times a game any more either.
F/G didn’t think Bum was going to do well in AZ, and for park factor reason. He’s moving from a yard that helps him a lot on flyballs to one that does not.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:31 am

Despite being mostly out of touch last season, it occurred to me fairly early on that the balls were juiced and pitching on a fine edge as.he does, lacking a killer fastball, Bumgarner was consistently victimized by that factor. Likely. that savvy batters avoided his lalapalooza yakker like the plague and simply waited on the inevitable f.b. Can he reconstitute his game in the Snakepit? Doubtful.

      • chipower9 said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:39 am

I still think it was a prudent move by Los Gigantes re: Bum, but fuck, it is gonna be weird seeing him rocking those awful uniforms.

  3. alleykat69 said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:12 am

Early in the game the ball was jumping off the bats on those bombs, later not so much. But yes they’re is something about closing off those knot hole gang fences, as the breeze off of McCovey Cove coming into the park is stopped, which should cause better carry especially in early starts at night.Hey no fans so why have those arches open? Close them off and they’re should be an increase of Homers…

    • chipower9 said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:43 am

There were still people out walking the promenade. But, I am sure the closing is related to isolation/covid concerns.

  4. Winder said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:31 am

I like the way Kapler is using everybody, makes for a great team attitude and also for some fun baseball.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:34 am

Well, it sure worked with that posse of pitchers. The A-hos could barely buy a base-hit. Without a mess of walks either, Oakland’s offense was mostly riding on fumes.

  5. chipower9 said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:34 am

Yes, fun game. I know it is preseason and there is not a lot here to hang your hat on, but I am liking what I see, so far.

I think what Flav is alluding to is not the moving-in of the walls to accommodate the new bullpens, but the shuttering of the arches where folks used to be able to walk-up and see the game from the promenade behind the wall.

I have mixed feelings on this and would probably vote to reopen them at some point in the future (post-pandemic). I think it is cool that fans who are out for a stroll can stop in and get a glimpse of the game. But, no strong feelings here…if they choose to permanently shutter them, so be it.

Travel day, and then four against the bums that count. Will be interesting. If they split, I will be encouraged (play .500 on the road, and plus .500 in your yard).

    • Carstie Clausen said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:39 am

Ahh, those golden-state arches. Wonder if it would break any baseball rules if they were wide open with los Gigantes at the plate and shuttered tight with the opposition at bat. It would somewhat resemble the infield dirt getting watered before the LaBumbos came to the Stick with Maury Wills a constant threat to steal. Hey, if your offense is sputtering and uncertainty in the rotation, any little edge could count–even if only psychologically.

      • Winder said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:51 am

Lol, in a way I think Kap is doing that by throwing so much different stuff at em. Hope it last during the regular season. And, if it ain’t cheating I would use as much stuff to throw the other team off, Quirky pitchers are a great example of that. Patience at the plate is everything.

      • chipower9 said, on July 22, 2020 at 9:49 am

Actually, the advantage to the hitter is with the arches closed (as they are currently). While a novel idea (to open for one team and close for the other), no way in hell that passes muster.

    • willedav said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:48 am

might be health/safety issue too. If arches were left open for fans Giants might have to have security make sure everyone has mask proper distance yada yada.

  6. willedav said, on July 22, 2020 at 8:43 am

Kruk was talking about that a lot, lack of wind due to openings closed making yard more hitter friendly. Was he only talking about balls hit to RF RCF? Yaz and the A’s guy who only got credit for triple crushed theirs.

Looking at numbers from last year SF was minus 60 for bombs overall. Hit 167 13th in NL gave up 227 10th.

Some of the guys with worst HR pct per 9 on B/R are gone including Holland Pomeraz and Beede. Other 2 with high rates were Suarez and DRod. However, 3 of the guys with lower HR rates are also gone, Melancon Dyson and the still injured Moronta. Gott was also in this category. Rogers gave up 0 HRs in his 12 innings last year.

    • chipower9 said, on July 22, 2020 at 9:51 am

I believe the closure of the arches affects RF and RCF. Not CF and LF.

  7. alleykat69 said, on July 22, 2020 at 9:26 am

I know it was only exhibition games but the Giants with they’re 18 man pitching staff did a superb job against the A’s who was using their regular starters against them and held up well!
They have a decision to make on Danny Jimenez who early in ST struggled but seems to have found his niche again hitting 95 mph and looked sharp. He has to go back to his former team under the rule 5 format otherwise.Im guessing they keep him,he has plenty of upside..

    • chipower9 said, on July 22, 2020 at 9:53 am

Agree, Kat. He does have an upside, and as Kruk (I think) noted, he currently is a two-pitch guy, if he develops a good change-up and other pitches, that only increases his effectiveness.

How is the hip doing my friend?

  8. alleykat69 said, on July 22, 2020 at 10:20 am

Doing pretty good Chi thanks.Just working the PT at home building up leg strength with plenty of hip replacement exercises( I’ll be using a walker for awhile too just for stability)to work on.Night time not the best , sleep forget it even with my drug store of medicine, as I’ll get an occasional spasm that registers a 10 + on the pain scale, plus having to piss like a race horse all the time with the meds, but overall getting stronger, and the pain I use to have in my lower back and groin are gone!! Just have to keep these new parts oiled up and moving like the tin man lol

    • chipower9 said, on July 22, 2020 at 10:42 am

Good luck Tin Man for a full and speedy recovery.

    • Winder said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:11 am

Yeah kat, stay strong on PT and hopefully good things will happen soon.

  9. Flavor said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:03 am

    Jesus Fucking Christ.

    • Winder said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:09 am

Depending on how they structure it, that could very well backfire on the bums.

    • Winder said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:12 am

That will mean they have him under contract until he’s 40.

  10. Flavor said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:14 am

Trump had something to tell me, lol
    Fuck,

I have to tell you something.

I asked my team to pull the files of my best supporters – the ones who have been there for me from the beginning and haven’t stopped since – and YOUR file came up empty.

    DONOR FILE

    SUPPORTER: Fuck You
    STATE: California
    DONOR SINCE: Not Available
    2020 CAMPAIGN CYCLE GIFTS: 0
    LIFETIME TOTAL: $0

I’ll admit I’m disappointed, but I know you have it in you to be one of my STRONGEST supporters, which is why I’m reaching out with a one-time offer in the hope that you’ll join me in making history.

    • Flavor said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:16 am

fuck this piece of shit. What if I really was one of his strongest supporters but I was broke because I lost my job? And he’s heaping this guilt trip on me? Man FUCK Trump and anyone who supports him. Nice little gesture he floated yesterday to that child rape agent Jizz Lane, eh? Wished her well not once but twice. Pardon coming for her too as long as she keeps her mouth shut about the children he fucked on that island.

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:17 am

Papa Donald is disappointed in you. Don’t you want to make history?

    • xoot said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:31 am

you’ve been holding out on us, fuck. looks like you’ve been a supporter “from the beginning.” there may be penalties to pay if you dump trump now. just sayin

  11. zumiee said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:29 am

That Betts contract would be very un-Dodger-like these days. I wonder if the ownership group is driving that. It goes against all the sabermetrics.

  12. xoot said, on July 22, 2020 at 11:43 am

I thought Kentucky boy Trevor Gott looked pretty good in his single inning the other night. He briefly had some forearm strain or something last year, but he was pretty solid out of the pen. He’s basically a FB guy, though, so the new smaller and muffled park configuration may hurt him. The wind that normally roared through the knothole chain-links was the evening fog blow. I bet most day games will play about the same as before. I sat up in those RCF bleachers for the famous 2003 Barry Bonds Birthday game. Very sunny, very warm, no noticeable wind. Ray Durham hit a HR over our heads, onto the concourse. (One anecdote is a SSS stat, right?)

    • willedav said, on July 22, 2020 at 12:30 pm

that fastball of his is up to 96 97 though right? He did look good. dunno what was wrong with A’s hitter but their big 3 Semien Chapman Olson did very little and Khris Davis got wiped out.

  13. willedav said, on July 22, 2020 at 12:26 pm

LA at their revenue status was always the favorite to work out a deal with Betts. this year neither they nor Boston have to pay Price. Turner and Pederson ($30 mil combined going into 2020) are FAs after this season and Opie and Jansen only have next year left on their deals. Lot coming off books.

  14. wilcojoe said, on July 22, 2020 at 12:48 pm

Just got back from my first Covid test. Wasn’t as bad as I thought. Been very fatigued, with some off and on headaches since we got back from a week in Branson, MO. Beautiful country in the Ozarks, but man they make Texans look progressive. No one wearing a mask and everything is packed to capacity. It’s easy to let your guard down when everyone is acting like it’s business as usual. Was really disappointed to see how they were handling Covid, or not handling it for that matter.

    • alleykat69 said, on July 22, 2020 at 1:08 pm

Yeah W/J I had to get a drive thru Covid-19 test about 4 days before my hip replacement surgery, lucky it was negative are I would not have had the operation at the time.Real easy test, swab both nostrils 👃 and the throat, alittle sting for seconds but no big deal, I’m sure a lot of people freak out about though! Just don’t be a puss and Man Up!
Hope your results come back negative my man.My daughter recently had one done, she said theirs just the anxiety of waiting for the results to come back which can take up to a week I believe? Hers was negative thank goodness 😅

    • Flavor said, on July 22, 2020 at 1:28 pm

keep us posted, hope you’re negative.

  15. alleykat69 said, on July 22, 2020 at 12:50 pm

Yeah it’s a no brainer for the Dodgers to get Betts locked up.He’s an amazing talent, 2nd only to Trout in total WAR since 2015 and miles ahead of #3..
With all the money coming off the books for the Dodgers next year and are options likely to be declined, lock him up next to Bellinger.Damm freakin Dodgers just keep on making great organizational moves..

Just for shits and giggles and for chump change Mookie can enjoy the Pro Bowling Circuit in the off-season, he’s won a charity tournament and threw a 300 game as well! Life is good for the Mookster, you can Bett on it..🎳

Jenkins had column in chron where he wondered if it was time to ditch anthem altogether. so chron did a poll (40% in favor) and printed some comments.
Best one I saw, “Personally I like the theme from Rawhide to begin the game.”

  17. unca_chuck said, on July 22, 2020 at 2:18 pm

Betts gets a 13 year/$380 mill deal from the Dogs. Wow.

    • unca_chuck said, on July 22, 2020 at 2:26 pm

Posting before reading. Again. Yeah, can’t see how this works out for the Dogs short or long term, but this will never get anywhere near the end of the deal.

    • zumiee said, on July 22, 2020 at 2:58 pm

I’m just guessing the ownership group got involved with team president Friedman and told him “The 7 division titles in a row is impressive but the time is now: win a championship. We’re going all in on that.”

      • zumiee said, on July 22, 2020 at 3:09 pm

Friedman knows that deal is going to go bad eventually.
At some point, Bel-linger, Seager, Buehler, and others are going to reach free agency.
The new CBA contract will likely lower the service time obligation for 6 years to 5.

  18. willedav said, on July 22, 2020 at 3:11 pm

Roberts and Friedman have won 393 regular season games in 4 years. Playoffs they are 25-22, 2 WS losses 1 NLDS to Nats and 1 NLCS to Cubs. Zaidi was GM for 3 of those and for 2015 when they lost NLDS to Mets with Mattingly at helm. 2014 Coletti/Mattingly lost NLDS to StL and 2013 NLCS to StL.

Betts is all about big payoff in short term. LA wins one, or more, they tell everyone to FOND.

    • zumiee said, on July 22, 2020 at 3:30 pm

      FOND?

      • djloo27 said, on July 22, 2020 at 4:22 pm

I’m thinking Fuck off ‘n’ Die.

      • willedav said, on July 22, 2020 at 5:06 pm

yes they are right. first heard that one from beautiful gal I was playing co-ed softball with about some opponents messing with her.

  19. djloo27 said, on July 22, 2020 at 3:13 pm

According to Heyman, they are still negotiating expanded playoffs…

    • Flavor said, on July 22, 2020 at 3:35 pm

10 to 16. LOL That would be silly.

      • unca_chuck said, on July 22, 2020 at 4:25 pm

Of course they are. Think of the excitement. No one will be eliminated till, till, whenever the playoffs start. September? October? Then the owners will make it permanent. As they will the DH. And the owners would need to get a TON of saran wrap.

I’m kidding about the excitement aspect of course. The owners are just gonna try to wring as much money as they can out of this fucked up situation.

  20. unca_chuck said, on July 22, 2020 at 4:30 pm

  21. gianthead said, on July 22, 2020 at 4:50 pm

Im surprised they have not agreed to the expanded playoffs yet. It is obvious that they are getting murdered by loss of revenue and expanding playoffs is a cheap easy way to get some of that back…two $1 billion expansion teams is the next obvious step to make up revenue…$2 billion split 30 ways pays for about 2 years of Betts…I continue to curse the Flodgers….

  22. Flavor said, on July 22, 2020 at 5:10 pm

and now as if by magic I am on the precipice of the Trump Donor HOF.

    Fuck,

Did you see the President’s email?

Because of your unwavering loyalty and dedicated support, YOU were identified as one of the few Patriots who qualified for the Trump Donor Hall of Fame.

This is a HUGE accomplishment, Fuck. Congratulations!
