A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

5 Games In…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 29, 2020

I was driving all day and missed the game last night. To be honest I’ve missed almost all of the games being on vacation. Perusing the stats I see we have a grand total of 2 home runs through 5 games. That’s not going to get er done.

Pence and Crawford, um, wow.

Shout out to Ervin who Pa Salon assures me is in the Lurker HOF at the Flap….

so 5 games in…McCarthy is 0-10 Pence 0-13. Slater has been in 1 game, where he led off and took 3 walks. Giants hitting .217 as a team and as Flav said, 2 HRs/given up 6.

Mr. Davis has 2 hits including an opposite field bomb, but 0 walks and 6 Ks in 12 at bats. Little concerned he is not making much contact. Davies got him with soft stuff last night.

  2. willedav said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:35 am

I watched some of the inning when Joe Kelly was in there vs. Stros. Wow was he wild, throwing 98 way up and out of zone, and one breaking ball behind Gurriel I think. Managed to K Correa with breaking ball and then taunted him. whoa

  3. djloo27 said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:52 am

Pence signed 1 year/$3 million, so pro-rated I figure he has about $1 million coming to him for the remainder of this stupid season. Can’t they fuckin’ eat that?
Yes, he’s a Giant legend and I have no doubt he’s working harder than anyone, but this is still a business and he’s taking up time and space needed to evaluate someone else…

    • Flavor said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:56 am

What is crazy is that zaidi got duped into this. You would think that guy understands Park factors. Or maybe he just signed him so the Facebook moms would have something to be happy about

    • willedav said, on July 29, 2020 at 8:27 am

Belt and Longo due back tomorrow so 2 moves need to be made. Yolmer Sanchez can be one of them, sent to other group until he’s ready to go. Don’t really see a spot for him anyway, McCarthy either. But Z keeping Pence around makes zero sense and he dumped guys last year after short windows of non production. So admit you f-ed up and improve Kapler’s roster.

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 8:36 am

Agree. Pence has to go and no way in hell the ownership group should not be able to swallow that ~1mil.

For the Longo and Belt moves, I would definitely cut McCarthy. And Pence would be the second one to go.

  4. wilcojoe said, on July 29, 2020 at 8:42 am

One of the reasons I was so pissed at Kapler for pinch hitting Pence for Dickerson is that I had the Dick in one of my DraftKings lineups. That lost me 2 AB’s. I ended up winning $200 on a $4 entry, but potentially could have been several hundred more. I believe that’s the most I have won playing baseball.

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 8:44 am

Yeah, that move pissed me off, too, and I didn’t have any coin on the game. Congrats on the $200 haul, Wilco. Hope you and yours are well down in Texas. You’re in Houston, correct?

      • wilcojoe said, on July 29, 2020 at 9:38 am

We moved to Waco almost 1 year ago to the day. We’re doing well. Still managing to avoid the idiots without the masks.

Good article in the Athletic about the ball carrying, Smardj, and other tidbits.

The inspirational speeches days are over 4 years old now since they lost to the Cubs in the playoffs,so they’re is no reason to have fake leadership from Pence anymore on a club going nowhere.Shit can the worse swing in baseball and bring up more youth to evaluate…

  7. Winder said, on July 29, 2020 at 9:11 am

Looks like the Gmen are gonna show flashes of brilliance while most of the time be forced to come back to earth. Hopefully Bart can kick start some offense. Connor Menez looks like the real deal.

  8. alleykat69 said, on July 29, 2020 at 9:24 am

After striking out Carlos Correia,Joe Kelly said:”Nice Swing Bitch” then stuck his tongue out shaking it as well.
Yeah that will get the benches to empty!
You know I can’t stand the Dodgers but I’m cool with what Kelly did,the Astros still need to take backlash for they’re cheating ways the last few years..

  9. wilcojoe said, on July 29, 2020 at 9:51 am

I know this may not sit well with most here, but I would love to see AJ Hinch managing the Giants in a couple years. My personal take on the Astros cheating is that started with Jeff Luhnow and was enabled by the owner Jim Crane. Should Hinch have done more to stop it? Absolutely. Should he be banned from managing again? Hell no.

For as analytically driven as the Astros were, Hinch ultimately managed more with his gut than the computer. You rarely saw him pull starters after 3 times thru the lineup, like Roberts has done almost robotically over the years. I really think he blended intuition and analytics better than anyone in the game.

Mark my words, Hinch will have his choice of managerial jobs when he returns. I hope it’s in SF.

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 11:24 am

I am not averse to kicking the tires on Hinch. Do you (and other Flappers) see Kap as a “placeholder?”

      • djloo27 said, on July 29, 2020 at 11:45 am

I’m sure WBK will at least be here for his 3 year deal.
The Giants don’t fire managers and with that roster, expectations can’t be very high…

  10. willedav said, on July 29, 2020 at 10:53 am

There’s nothing inherently wrong with Bart playing MLB for as long as games go on, service time notwithstanding. I’m just skeptical he can do much to make a difference at the plate before sometime late next year or 2022. Top prospect with power, OK. Ability to hit ML pitching after 79 ABs vs. AA??? doubtful

The pitchers and Cs at this level are way more accomplished and smarter, the yards are bigger and fielders way better too. I think he winds up with Matt Williams or McGwire numbers Mendoza line seasons— very low BA and 4-5 HRs. more seasoning needed.

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 11:25 am

Well, he doesn’t start his clock coming-up anytime beginning with today. I will willing to see what the kid has as opposed to Tromp, etc. And if he falters, fuck it, send him back to Sac. I think he is mature and could handle it appropriately is that came to pass. Let Joey Play.

Case by case – don’t know till you try ’em out…

  11. snarkk said, on July 29, 2020 at 11:13 am

IMO they should bring Bart up and play him, it won’t cost them a FA year now that they are past that minimum time limit, whatever it is. I think this season isn’t going the full 60, so whatever time he gets actually playing real ball is a plus. Otherwise, he’s lost an entire year of real time development…

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 11:26 am

I agree, and basically said the same in my reply above to willedav. Bring the kid up and let’s see WTF he can do…

  12. Bozo said, on July 29, 2020 at 11:33 am

Fuck the butt hurt Dodgers. If I’m Dusty, I start the game with an opener and have him hit the first Dodger. If the Umps try and toss the pitcher, I’d challenge that with the new 3 batter minimum rule. As stated from MLB 2020 rule changes – “All pitchers — both starters and relievers — now have to face at least three batters (or pitch until the inning is over) before they come out of a game. The only exception is an injury or illness that prevents the pitcher from being able to finish his three batters.”, I would then have my guy hit the next 2 batters as well.

    • unca_chuck said, on July 29, 2020 at 11:53 am

Interesting. I’d like to see Bummie stare down Cowboy Joe for half an hour if he can’t get thrown out.

    • Frank Souze said, on July 29, 2020 at 12:55 pm

Lmao -I would pay to watch that go down.- Nice fantasy Boz but Dusty is old school.and will encourage his guys to lay in the weeds for an appropriate time to execute a response – its not as if the Assstrohs didn’t expect to be tagged, targeted and disrespected this season they certainly earned it. – Also Houston isn’t exactly sitting the world on fire right now and are in danger of falling behind in a truncated season with the potential for cancelled games aka Florida & Philly – The only thing hurt were egos so the best professional response would be to WIN.

    • xoot said, on July 29, 2020 at 1:21 pm

when the dodgers finally make it to SF, and when they’re using a pitcher who appeared in the WS 2017, the Giants should have someone in the dugout to — occasionally and randomly — slam a trash can lid just before the windups start.

      • Bozo said, on July 29, 2020 at 5:07 pm

Hah, that would be pretty funny.

  13. unca_chuck said, on July 29, 2020 at 11:51 am

Yeah, Chuck. I said Mr. Kotter was a placeholder from day one. Unless he somehow gets something decent out of this band of shit-fits in the next couple years. I don’t see it happening, but they weren’t really giving him anything to win with (Flores), and then made the bonehead move of signing Pence.

I’m so dreading the return of Belt and Longo. Like I said at the end of last year, my hope was they lose Crawfish and Belt. Here we aren’t. Crawford looks like he’s playing out the string in a coma.

I cannot wait for a lineup with Belt, Longo, Pence and Crawfish. I’ll be sticking hot knitting needles in my eyes to ease my pain that night.

    • snarkk said, on July 29, 2020 at 12:13 pm

Yeah, SabEvans really put an anvil onto the neck of this organization with contracts on those guys. Belt and Craw sortof understandable, post WSeries euphoria. But, Longoria deal made no sense from day 1, taking on such a bad deal. Pence brought back is inexplicable to me, I thought the ZMan was smarter. Pence had his last good-bye under Bochy, it was all good and done. ZMan had no owed allegiance whatever to Pence…

      • Winder said, on July 29, 2020 at 12:38 pm

I think Kap is just playing the hand he was dealt. I liked this years draft and think a couple of solid ballplayers will eventually come out of it. With the pro rated season the Giants are saving some money our old vets. Pence was a mistake that they could eat without any real damage. We are kinda stuck and this fucked up year isn’t helping.

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 12:35 pm

Where do you purchase your knitting needles, Charlie?

      • djloo27 said, on July 29, 2020 at 1:15 pm

That bs Tatis juiced home run is still ticking me off…along with Pence PH and Crawford being kept in the game…

    • xoot said, on July 29, 2020 at 1:33 pm

On Father’s Day 2014, warm sunny day, I saw the Rockies’ RHer Wilin Rosario hit a fly ball like that to RF. It smacked into the bleachers just barely on the to the foul side of the foul pole. I know. I was sitting there. None of us in that section could believe it was really going to reach us. Food and beer went flying. My son grabbed the ball and gave it to a little kid. That entire corner of the ballpark ovated. Tatis’s HR last night didn’t reach the seats. The ball got juiced, when? — 2016?

  17. unca_chuck said, on July 29, 2020 at 1:34 pm

Winder, I understand Mr Kotter has to play who he has, but I really want to see Pence on the bench, not near the fence. He doesn’t have to keep starting Crawfish. Piss them off. Who cares?

The prevailing sentiment of the young guys getting no rope while the vets get miles of it continues. I think they should bench Crawfish for the next week, and cut Pence. Pence has merely slipped into Posey’s spot in the Flab Four.

    • djloo27 said, on July 29, 2020 at 1:48 pm

Pence actually looks emaciated to me.

  19. alleykat69 said, on July 29, 2020 at 1:54 pm

Crazy as it seems I think the Giants are grooming Bart to eventually play another position, 3B/1B/ LF I’m sure he will get his time behind the plate as well, but I read they feel Bailey is even more polished as a Catcher( switch hitter as well extra bonus points) and he’s unlikely to play other positions. But eventually they will both be in the LU together with hopefully Luciano,Ramos, Bishop,Canário, Toriba ( sp). Bailey is rated number 6 on the Giants prospect list already according to Baseball America! Zman did mention u never can have enough catching depth.I agree it’s a hard position to fill out with quality players..

    • djloo27 said, on July 29, 2020 at 2:04 pm

      It’s not crazy, Kat.
I think catchers take more of a beating than ever.
More foul tips off the mask and body now that everyone throws 99.
Also, so much bouncing around to block balls in the dirt because that’s where pitchers try to get hitters to chase when they’re ahead in the count. The days of wasting one outside are over.
The Posey rule helps, but really how often?

    • willedav said, on July 29, 2020 at 2:26 pm

good point Kat. If Bart is that good with a bat, he’d be hella lot safer and have longer career playing 1b or other spot.
As for “eventually”, the guys listed won’t be here much before 2022-23. Luciano hasn’t even played A ball yet. Lot of potential but it’s gonna take some time to come through.
      Meanwhile…

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 3:05 pm

I don’t think the idea of the Giants potentially using Bart in positions other than catcher are that far-fetched. Posey’s last year is next year (no way they exercise the option on him – 22m vs. 3m buyout). That opens up the spot for someone (Bart?) after next year. No way Bailey is ready for the big club by 2022.

Will be interesting to see it all play-out.

    • Bozo said, on July 29, 2020 at 5:06 pm

Agree Kat, I’ve been saying that for quite awhile now, it just makes more sense.

      • xoot said, on July 29, 2020 at 2:35 pm

something like that, assuming this “season” goes 60, for any team

  21. willedav said, on July 29, 2020 at 2:17 pm

    CF Mike Yastrzemski (L)
    1B Pablo Sandoval (S)
    2B Wilmer Flores (R)
    LF Alex Dickerson (L)
    DH Hunter Pence (R)
    SS Brandon Crawford (L)
    3B Donovan Solano (R)
    RF Austin Slater (R)
    C Chadwick Tromp (R)

Pence and Craw, again…Fuck me to tears…

  28. James said, on July 29, 2020 at 3:49 pm

If they do replace Kapler — I’m not sure why they’d bother any time soon, so long as any group of productive players don’t hate him — let it be with someone who speaks to the press just as clearly as he does.

    • willedav said, on July 29, 2020 at 4:11 pm

Could be one of those guys who knows how to say the right thing at the right time. So he wins the job at the interview, and then loses it with his performance. Lot of coaches in all sports recycled like that.

  33. willedav said, on July 29, 2020 at 5:02 pm

Paddack (23-24 I think) threw 81 pitches for SD in opener with AZ and shut them out in 6 innings. He had really good season last year 3.35 ERA. this is where SD is way ahead of SF–young SPs just farther advanced.

  34. willedav said, on July 29, 2020 at 5:06 pm

Paddack beat SF twice last year and lost once in 3 start. Gave up only 5 runs in 17 innings.

  35. Flavor said, on July 29, 2020 at 5:31 pm

Dudes, can we wait a couple of games till we decide Kap has to go? I fucking love the guy and appreciate he’s trying to manage this team with a little more forward thinking than we’ve had in the past. The game has changed. Let’s see what he does with this season and the next one.

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 6:08 pm

I’m down with giving your man-crush a bit of rope. 😉

    • alleykat69 said, on July 29, 2020 at 6:17 pm

If he’s thinking forward more he wouldn’t keep throwing the same corpses out there every game.
We’re dead 💀 tonight against Paddack who’s a rising pitching star.Even if Cueto pitches well to keep them in the game, I don’t see them scratching many big hits together to produce runs..

  36. zumiee said, on July 29, 2020 at 6:10 pm

The NBA “bubble” seems to be working so far. I wonder if they can maintain it.

  37. willedav said, on July 29, 2020 at 6:14 pm

Forward thinking and Hunter Pence as DH again, hmmnn.

Look he gets a pass on this season regardless of record and has 2 months to see what’s up with 30/30 alternate site roster Z has provided him and coaching staff. But he seems like type of guy who at some point, early or late, will do something dumb enough to allow other team to win.

  38. djloo27 said, on July 29, 2020 at 6:33 pm

Maybe he’s looking to expose the failing vets, so management will make a greater effort to get rid of them.
    That’s forward thinking…

    • alleykat69 said, on July 29, 2020 at 6:58 pm

Yes that would be forward thinking for sure Loo!
But he is sure testing the flap fan base to the limits seeing this continual shit sandwich of a LU out there!
Never thought I would say it, but I miss Longo&Belt, atleast they have the ability to hit the ball hard and give u good AB’s.
Plus the Defense will improve immensely on the infield.9 errors in 5 games is atrocious and will only hurt u more to overcome in most games..

  39. xoot said, on July 29, 2020 at 6:54 pm

I don’t think Cueto’s odd move, where he turns back toward 2B and pauses and then spins toward home, works very well. Just my perception, over the years, but I think he has trouble locating with that motion and the batters don’t seem all that off balance. Machado tore the hide off of that LD just now. I swear I’ve seen that happen again and again.

Loo, your 6:33 is pretty much what I said yesterday: not that the team should need anymore evidence, but that’s all playing Pence/Craw is doing now, giving the team’s new management legit reasons to dump these guys. This season* and next season, the ground will be tilled and fertilized for 2022 when a lot of those younger’uns mentioned above are ready. I’m as tired as anyone watching Pence/Craw et al, but not feeling any teeth-gnashing this season* because they’ll be gone soon anyway.

      I knew I must’ve heard it somewhere…

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:31 pm

Agree with both of you, but they can eat Pence’s prorated salary and probably be out less than a mil. It’s just painful watching him.

At least Crawford is hitting the ball hard. But he sucks, too, and at around 15 mil a year, that’s a tough pill to swallow.

There’s nothing wrong with Mr. Kotter being a placeholder. Who knows? He has what he has, like Bochy last year. But pencilling in Pence and Crawfish back to back? Batting Pence in the 4 hole? Annoying to say the least.

Soon? Soon ain’t soon enough. Those guys should ride the pine till they get pissed off and leave, or get their 5 ABs a week and like it.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:31 pm

Agree, and *soon* could be very soon enough as perhaps we begin to see certain players deciding to opt out. Translation: team pushed them to the door labeled *opt out*. It might be the new phantom injury.

“Mirable dictum.” Crawdaddy with a gee-you-wine base-hit—well, sorta, kinda. Dickerson could get into a groove. Solano works WITH the bat. Jeeze, Kap—if you gotta go with Pence couldn’t you at least bat him 9th?

    • chipower9 said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:35 pm

      I would bat Pence 10th….

      • xoot said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:48 pm

        he’d make a helluva 3B coach

They’ve turned the empty arena into a futuristic looking hockey planet…

  58. alleykat69 said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:41 pm

Pitch count will doom Cueto now. That inning was brutal close to 30 pitches.Lucky to go 2 more under Quick Hook Kap philosophy..

Why can’t they have cutout ball dudes on they’re stools?
Danger factor? Mac Williamson might bitch?

  65. Carstie Clausen said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:54 pm

62 pitches for Paddak through three. The Giants hitters have succeeded in dragging out the counts. One more inning at that pace and he may need relief in the 5th. Knew before it happened that Cueto should never have lost Grisham. Those bases on balls will kill you–particularly when the heart of the order is due up. But then the YAZman showed em that SF too, can go long-ball. So far, this one’s gone closer than I anticipated.

  66. alleykat69 said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:55 pm

Davis,Flores, and Yaz leading the way in the HR department with 1 each..

  67. unca_chuck said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:56 pm

I hadn’t see this. Pretty funny.

  68. zumiee said, on July 29, 2020 at 7:57 pm

Why is it “hit batsman” instead of “hit batter”? Batsman? Seriously? Let’s ride in the horseless carriage.
The box score calls it HBP, hit by pitch, anyway.

    • djloo27 said, on July 29, 2020 at 8:00 pm

Soon it will be “hit batsperson”…

  69. unca_chuck said, on July 29, 2020 at 8:01 pm

Ownage. Much like “The Penguin ” for the Bums several years back.

  71. alleykat69 said, on July 29, 2020 at 8:05 pm

It always sucks when you know the pitcher is done, but with 2 outs it was obvious Kap wanted him to finish it out.I don’t blame him on this call, he just couldn’t make the pitch to get out of the inning..

  72. xoot said, on July 29, 2020 at 8:08 pm

    fuck fuck fuck

  73. Macdog said, on July 29, 2020 at 8:09 pm
