A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Pence

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 2, 2020

When your OPS is Ronnie Lott’s number, you are not having a good year.

Today Mr. .042 likely gets another start and his job is to hit the baseball with his bat and have it be recorded as a hit.

Hunter Pence will go down in history as one of the greatest Giants of all time.

And it is time for him to get a hit…..

I wish this front office dealt with Pence the way the 49ers did with Ronnie.

OK off Pence wars. Giants have big roster for a little while, whatev. He isn’t only guy not hitting, just a little worse than others.
there are currently 7 teams over .500 in NL—4 of them in West, including SF and Rox 2 teams who projected to be in Marlins and Pirates territory in NL.

Thx to Xoot for Spann vid, great photos in there. Tough news for VN Paul, stay safe.
Mac lol re: tough day for Rangers (watched some of NHL openers) fans….meanwhile Vive Les Frogs!

I almost spit up my coffee ☕️ Pence being one the greatest Giants of alltime? You can’t be serious can you?

have you forgotten 2012? What the fuck are you even talking about?

Apparently Mets pitcher has lot more potential than Hamilton according to bloggers on MLBTR site story.

When giants signed Austin Jackson he was coming off outlier season (200 OPS higher than what he had been doing) for Tribe. Fear that’s Pence in nutshell.

280 ABs slash line .318//387/.482 for 869 OPS and only 31 yrs old. Here’s 2018 Giants line:
149 ABs slash line .242/.309/.295 Mets picked him up he didn’t do much better. career was over.

  6. Carstie Clausen said, on August 2, 2020 at 9:31 am

From his MiL stats it seems amazing that the Mets traded Humphries. As almost entirely a starter, the 24 YO amassed these totals between a brief rookie stint in ’15 and last season: Composite ERA 2.16, WHIP 1.026 and a 30-177 bases on balls to strikeouts ratio. What’s not to like?

Perhaps NY was overstocked on starters and needed an ignition system and SB threat,, so they pulled the trigger with Humphries for Hamilton…Of course there lingers the possibility that there may be occulted medical issues of which the Giants were not aware. But what’s to lose? While Hamilton may become useful for the Mets, Humphries could end up useful for SF even this season if the current starters do not start going longer with quality starts.

Potentially a good acquisition. Possibly an excellent one.

    • alleykat69 said, on August 2, 2020 at 9:48 am

Yes I like this move Stix, Humphrey’s stats are impressive at this stage of his career…

It just blows my mind that Pence is batting cleanup again today ahead of Longoria & Solano who both along with Yaz are tearing the cover off of the ball!
A heart of the order rally killer!
    O-23 O-24 O-25 O-26 O-27 but still a stud in Kapler’s mind who refuses to bat him 8th-9th Unreal..

    • Carstie Clausen said, on August 2, 2020 at 10:30 am

Could Kapler possibly be suffering from a brain tumor, or is he deeply psychological and presenting the team with a seemingly unsurmountable obstacle in order to fire them up and show their mettle?

  10. willedav said, on August 2, 2020 at 10:34 am

Early LU (not in this order) has Slater in RF Pence in LF Yaz CF Flores at 1b Solano Craw batting 9th Longo Tromp vs. LHP Ruf DH no Dubon again hmmnn entered game last night in CF D replacement
    smardz as SP

  11. Carstie Clausen said, on August 2, 2020 at 10:42 am

22 YO Kolby Allard gets the start for the Rangers. Smardj may not be facing the powerball intensity that took him to the cleaners vs the Friar Tuckers. But the wind is blowing out at 9 mph at Oracle’s Willie Mays Field, so there may be an afternoon fireworks display as Allard’s stats (he’s replacing Corry Kluber who’s out for a while) are not all that spectacular.

If there’s one on in the bottom of the first–or even bases empty, we might anticipate Allard walking our #3 in order to fatten up on that .000 BA in the cleanup position. Though we all may be wishing our onetime slugger and chief cheerleader well in his struggling efforts, my suspicion is that very few of us are holding our breaths.

    • Winder said, on August 2, 2020 at 11:28 am

I will always wish Pence well but this is still a business and he is failing miserably. i guess Kap has a lot of rope.

  12. alleykat69 said, on August 2, 2020 at 11:39 am

Yeah they had a lot of rope to use in “Hang em High” as well.Clint Pence cannot be hung!

  13. gianthead said, on August 2, 2020 at 12:41 pm

I suspect this game is Pence’s swan song….giving him one more against his previous team…

    • Flavor said, on August 2, 2020 at 12:56 pm

You’re probably right but I’m calling a bomb from him today.

your dislike for him is incredible. He is literally responsible for at least 1 of our 3 WS. You do what he did in 2012 you are in the Giants hall of FOREVER.
How soon ye forget, AK, how soon ye forget……

  14. zumiee said, on August 2, 2020 at 12:53 pm

Smarj needs to show something today. I’m pretty tired of his act.

    • zumiee said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:29 pm

      Sigh…..

  15. alleykat69 said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:34 pm

I appreciate his motivational speeches, his Pence at the Fence moment, and his rah rah like Panda in the dugout, but those times were many years back for both of them really. Its just time to keep moving forward on the rebuild and close the chapter of his past success.

But no worries he won’t quit and the Giants won’t let him,, just how they roll.

  16. xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:39 pm

    Great rip from Pence. Finally.

    • xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:41 pm

and his hustle to 3B now gives the Giants a SF run. Wanna bet this is his last game?

  17. Carstie Clausen said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:41 pm

Whatever Smardj might have had se sure ain’t got it now. Today it isn’t power balls like with the Dagos–it’s a steady peppering on just about every offering. No video here, so what’s the verdict? Too much right over the plate (command), nothing on the fastball? frisbee freebies on changeups? Fill me in. Looks like another project for Kapler. Is our manager showing streaks of grey yet? Maybe Humphries gets the call sooner rather than later.

    • xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:44 pm

in the olden days, the shark needed at least four innings to get his fb into the mid 90s, iirc. he’s not built for 2020.

    • zumiee said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:49 pm

He hangs too many hit-me pitches. He always has.

  18. willedav said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:50 pm

wow first two strikes to crawford were on outer half…since he normally gets shifted that’s where the defense is not playing. He takes both and then swings and misses back foot breaking ball inning over 2 left on. Kinda surprised he is in there at all vs. LHP to begin with.

  19. zumiee said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:51 pm

Craw and Belt both should be platoon only.

    • zumiee said, on August 2, 2020 at 1:52 pm

Aubrey Huff is a Great Giant. Hunter Pence is a Great Giant. Etc….These guys will go down in history as great Giants for what they gave us.I can understand not wanting to see Pence play anymore or realizing that Huff is an imbecile and hating him, but to try to take them out of the pantheon of Great Giants makes no sense to me at all. They will reside there for the rest of time……

  22. zumiee said, on August 2, 2020 at 2:05 pm

Speaking of Huff, he’s trying to kill people with a recent tweet:

    @aubrey_huff

“I see more and more people wearing masks outside all the sudden. I don’t get it. This isn’t the new normal! Do you people like being controlled?”

  23. xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 2:10 pm

Smardz’s fb started out at 88-89. It was up to 92 in the 4th. His pitch count is pretty good now, thanks to the quick inning. Still, those 3 early runs hurt.

    .231/.286/.372 for .658
On road he hit 14 of 20 bombs .507 slugging .870 OPS
    Damn Dick just missed one

    • xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:08 pm

I see you’re paying close attention to the OPS split since Keith laid down the Law.

      • xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:15 pm

on that Law, I think he made a good point, but fact is very few good players have .300 OB and .500 Slugging. I think Wilmet Flores is about there right now, and look at how inconsistent he’s been to hit that so early. Any player who gets to .400 OB is good. Buster did it twice, 2012 and 2017. No one else on the Giants did, in those years. Of course, his 2012 Slug was well over .500 (ergo, MVP). 2017, no. He needed sluggers around him (and didn’t have them). 350/500 is more common than 300/500, I think. Jeff Kent was 356/500 for his career. Who’d you rather have on your team, 2017 Buster or average Kent? Obviously, the answer is: both.

(There’s a webpage devoted to career .400 OB players. Apparently, for all of mlb history only 43 who were “HOF eligible” made that mark for their careers and 27 of them are in the hall. .400 OB is good. Obviously.)

  38. Flavor said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:13 pm

It’s amazing what has happened to this team since they finally embraced the concept of hitting home runs to be competitive

    • xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:16 pm

I like Longo’s vet presence and power so far. Maybe he’ll be worth something at the covid deadline. (what are the chances that the Giants will be buyers, if they make it that far?)

  39. zumiee said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:15 pm

    • sandog said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:23 pm

I heard some of that while drifting in and out of sleep. Love Flem for telling it like it is.

You really think the home runs are due to the Giants thinking differently?

      • Flavor said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:43 pm

no not really thinking differently. Maybe some of it is a mindset, you don’t have Posey trying to go the other way every at bat. But we have some new guys who are swinging for the fences. We need that.

  42. zumiee said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:18 pm

I literally could have done what #66 did.

  43. Carstie Clausen said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:18 pm

Best we can say about Triggs is that he’s rusty. Not much in that Briggs-bag. Mediocre career with a couple teams.

  44. snarkk said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:19 pm

Triggs had no clue where the pitched ball was going. Obvious about 3 pitches in.
Kapler was one batter too late in pulling him. You gotta have your replacements ready to go. You can’t just go with the righty/lefy BS when the pitcher can’t find the plate. Kapler better get his shit together in managing a pen in late innings situations…

  45. Carstie Clausen said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:21 pm

DAMN that AI-auto-correct. Triggs-bag came out Briggs-bag. Just had to correct the frikken thing again. Don’t those airhead programmers realize that a high proportion of people with desktop iMacs tend to be somewhat literate.

  46. xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:24 pm

not a HR last year. oh well.

  47. Carstie Clausen said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:26 pm

Now a Tyler Anderson meltdown. Does he think he’s still pitching at the Box of Rocks?

  48. zumiee said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:27 pm

0-2 pitch to Gallo right down the middle.

  49. Flavor said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:45 pm

The thing I don’t like about Flemming: once he gets on something he never lets it go.As soon as Triggs didn’t have it I knew he was going to hammer away about it with every single comment and that’s what happened.

The thing I do like about Flemming: I agree with SD, he has no problem telling it like it is. Miller is like that too.

    • willedav said, on August 2, 2020 at 4:02 pm

I’ve heard him do that in basketball too, bring up same point over and over during course of a game.

  50. Carstie Clausen said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:46 pm

Maybe we learned something about Anderson today. Give him plenty of time to warm up and opening an inning (nobody on) and he can be tough. This game might look much different now had Kapler started the top of the 7th with him and not Triggs. Oh well, the manager is in a steep learning curve and sorting process. Chances are that T. is soon on his way to Sacville.

  51. willedav said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:51 pm

I think Sando’s OPS is lower than his weight.

  52. Flavor said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:55 pm

why did Kap go to Triggs in the first place? I didn’t see any of the game before the comeback in the 6th. Had he burned through all his pitchers by then? Seems stupid to put a guy who just got called up into that spot. And all he’d been doing is pitching in that stupid taxi cab practice league thing where the players get no competition or development.
Terrible move to go to him and stay with him.

  53. willedav said, on August 2, 2020 at 3:59 pm

Xoot, Law’s take was hardest thing to do as a hitter was to avoid making an out. So he placed more value on hitters with high OB than slugging. He compares some hitters throughout the book, and one example was difference btw Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel, who made lot more outs over his career and to Law is nowhere near HOF worthy.

He has new book out which I have on hold when it is available at local library so I’m interested to see if he has changed his perspective since 2016-1017.

    • xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 4:11 pm

interesting stuff. Hardest thing to do? Sounds like a thesis waiting for an antithesis, but I’m surely not prepared to do that. I may read that book, though. No matter what, however, I think my reverence for the great Omar will survive . . . .

  54. Flavor said, on August 2, 2020 at 4:24 pm

people who aren’t from here don’t understand how this could be possible. I still vividly recall heading to a game at Candlestick in the 80’s, when we left my house the ac was blasting, 30 minutes later we had the heater blasting……

    • willedav said, on August 2, 2020 at 4:41 pm

oh yeah. I’d get home from work, turn on AC and ceiling fans to cool off apt and settle down to watch night game in shorts and no shirt. Meanwhile it’s 20 degrees cooler at the O and fans are bundled up with those weirdo earflap hats on.
the Stick—once you got as fa northr as SFO from south bay you noticed how dark windy and different it was outside. SF is just its own microclime.

    • xoot said, on August 2, 2020 at 4:42 pm

that heat in the central valley sucks the cold fog in off the ocean, through the Gate and over the hills every afternoon this time of year. Fogust. The problem with the Stick was that it was next to San Bruno “Mountain,” right in the path of the blast coming in along the flank of that big hill. China Basin is not quite so bad, and the high western walls of the park block the worst of it — for most of the cutouts in the stands. After work for many years I left cold windy SF for warm mildly breezy evenings at home in the summer months.

Cespedes opting out of the season. Zaidi, who was involved in engineering both Oakland’s original signing of Cespedes and then its abrupt trading him out a few years later, probably got a much-needed chuckle from today’s Yoenis news.

  58. willedav said, on August 2, 2020 at 7:17 pm

Judge homers again, wow. so many injuries to pitchers lately. Smyly is on the IL, giants headed to Coors for 4. Rox are rolling too they lit up Pads pitching at Coors too. Maybe some more Giants hitters can wake up.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on August 2, 2020 at 8:41 pm

By and large, the poorly arranged hitters have awakened. Burt as for the pitching…and the Box of Rox.

  59. willedav said, on August 2, 2020 at 9:05 pm

The Giants have hit 9 HRs now. Reasons for that imo as follows:
    healthy Dickerson
adding Wilmer Flores in off season
early success of RH Longoria and Solano
Yaz picks up where he left out hitting for power and getting on base
park does seem more friendly to LHs but so far little evidence it has helped SF

Tromp hit first bomb by a C today. I felt even with Bart Giants Cs weren’t hitting more than 5-6 which is what they are on pace for. Heineman does not seem like power hitter.
so far power is encouraging, but pitchers continue to give up more of them and it’s cost them some games.
so let’s see what happens on road. Last year SF did well on road and hit for more power/scored more runs.

    • Macdog said, on August 2, 2020 at 9:55 pm

In a normal season, Buster probably wouldn’t have hit his first HR until early August.

  60. sandog said, on August 2, 2020 at 10:28 pm

That’s 2 Buster Bashes today! I had a feeling he’d still catch some crap on here, even while sitting out the season.

    • willedav said, on August 3, 2020 at 7:13 am

Oh yeah inevitable I guess. C isn’t a position where they have a problem either, except defensively. It was fine last season and will be next year too.

    • willedav said, on August 3, 2020 at 7:16 am

More to playing winning baseball than how many HRs someone hits, especially at C.

  61. alleykat69 said, on August 3, 2020 at 8:42 am

Defensively Tromp has a long way to go but his bat impresses me with loud contact.I have a feeling he will have a big game are 2 in Colorado hitting homeruns.
I’m actually happy with both are catchers for now.
Heineken calls a good game has a solid big league catching form( quiet not sitting on a leg like that Texas catcher who looks terrible) and though not the power that Tromp shows is still hitting the ball fine for average.
Don’t know what his averages are from both sides of the plate? I assume he’s a better hitter left handed?
