Back On The Beam!
That was a win from years gone by. Belt leading the way with a bomb, a well pitched game. Solid.
Honestly, that’s about as good as we’re going to get from out pitching staff, all things considered. Obviously you need good pitching to win but we don’t really have that. We have “just ok” pitching. We are going to have to swing the bats to win. End of story.
I kinda had it this morning with all the Trump emails telling me they’re going to match 600% of my never-to-arrive donation so I sent them back this:
They responded asking me if there was a problem with my order or if I want a refund. LOL. I know it’s just automated and nobody read my email but it still gave me a good chuckle…..
I honestly don’t have enough wall space for all the certificates and pageantry they want to bestow upon me:
“We are going to have to swing the bats to win.” Agree, and we have to catch and throw the ball without a bunch of nonsense errors, too.
Nice win last night. Get ’em today and leave town with a split. We have played the bums almost straight-up (50-50) over the past couple of years. Houston will be, ah, interesting.
As of yesterday (this was before the game) the Giants sat in the 8th playoff spot.
I think each of next 3 SPs Giants face will be LHP. This has been better Kapler platoon lineup so see who is in it and if early getaway day start has them fired up off last nights win.
Last season Giants did well on the road and scored lot of runs; it was at home they neither hit nor pitched well.
Who pitches today—is this a planned opener or by committee game?
daily lineup widget says Tyler Anderson is SP.
Pence Yaz Slater in OF Flores 1b Dubon SS Tromp C Solano Longo Ruf DH
No word on roster moves?
They are swinging the bats good, #7 in all batting averages among all teams at .248 even ahead of the dogpile at .241, runs tied for 8th at 60,I think we all would take that right now.Yeah the defense is the worse in baseball which has cost them games for sure, that has to be CLEANED UP!! And of the pitching though Webb is starting to look like the real deal..
25 teams below them in BA with Cleveland at .181 and they have scored only 34 runs in the season in 13 games less then 3 runs per game yikes..
Fortunately for the Indians their rotation is solid, with the lesser-known Bieber soon enough likely to also become a household name. He managed an incredible feat which I watched here in the Twin Cities—shutting out the Bombas. Yes, he actually shut out the Twins!!! This is strictly between us, but to date SF is one of the few squads out there which has yet to be shut out, Keep it at a whisper or bad juju might ensue.
Eric in for major pain…
yes, thank you. He needs to brace for major impact.
Hank said deadline to cut 2 players in 9 AM. You would get to keep one extra for double header. 5 now allowed to travel (not for home games) on taxi squad one of whom must be C. C is allowed to be bulllpen guy too. these 5 do not get service time or MLB salary only $100 per diem and must go back to alternate site when road trip ends.
According to Pavlovic, Duggar and Suarez have been moved to the Taxi squad.
There carrying 15 pitchers so I’ll say 1 pitcher maybe Selman though I like him and he’s pitching well
Position player since they will never get rid of Pence .038 and Panda .150? I’ll go with Duggar are Ruf?
The Giants optioned Dig Duggar and Southbound Suarez to Sac and both will be on taxi squad.
1 CF Mike Yastrzemski (L)
2 RF Alex Dickerson (L)
3 3B Donovan Solano (R)
4 1B Brandon Belt (L)
5 2B Wilmer Flores (R)
6 DH Pablo Sandoval (S)
7 SS Brandon Crawford (L)
8 C Tyler Heineman (S)
9 LF Steven Duggar (L)
SP Tyler Anderson
Well if they optioned out Grave Duggar then Chi’s LU card needs .038 to play LF are get Dubon in there..
2 straight games without Longoria in the LU?
Oblique acting up? Inquiring minds need to know…
Yeah, I know Kat…but this was the latest line-up card I saw for today…
New lineup…
Austin Slater (R) LF
Wilmer Flores (R) 2B
Donovan Solano (R) SS
Evan Longoria (R) 3B
Hunter Pence (R) RF
Darin Ruf (R) DH
Pablo Sandoval (S) 1B
Chadwick Tromp (R) C
Mauricio Dubon (R) CF
SP Tyler Anderson
In 5 ABs against Freeland, Solano has hit 2 dingers. Flores and Longoria have each hit 1 in 13 ABs. Pence in 10 ABs has 5 hits against him. Should be a conga line kinda day in Denver today.
A’s – Rangers is the free game of the day…I think the A’s have won four in a row…those Fucking A’s…
Stros will be in town vs. Oakland this weekend, before Giants go to Houston next week. No fans/trashcans but of course lot of talk about them.
I think Yaz has a slight resemblance to JFK Jr…
Until time Giants aren’t in contention, which could be a month away or more, seems unlikely this turns into “play the kids” type of season for position players. Pence Sandoval Ruf are in along with the Core on IF, Davis Duggar are out Dubon isn’t getting much run, and of course no Bart.
Maybe roster isn’t ultimately his call, but Kapler seems solidly behind vets and continues to run them out there.
Which is a real bummer towards rebuilding!!
Really sucks if Zman& Special K are hamstrung by ownership to keep throwing the geriatric squad out there due to they’re salaries!!
I doubt seriously the ownership group has anything to do with the line-up/make-up of the team.
Loo mentioned getting off cable…btw the national/local stations that will have all major sports (and college) plus the cable ones for each sport including tennis and horse racing (plus college like Pac 12 SEC yada yada) I don’t think I could do it.
Meanwhile second day in a row Chron has 2 full pages of stories on golf about only sport besides soccer I can’t stand to watch.
Fun fact: Craig Stadler (walrus mustache) regular customer and nice guy used to come into store a lot.
It’s gonna be weird, but the cable bill is insane.
How many times can I watch Goodfellas?
Baseball & football are no problem.
I have time to figure out next hockey season…
We cut cable recently and have YouTube TV. We get SNY but not YES and MSG, both of which I can live without but maybe not you with MSG. That’s the problem with the NY regional sports networks, there doesn’t seem to be any options other than cable/satellite that has all those channels.
Yeah Loo I use to have Comcast infinity and I was getting rear ended with my bill!!
My son said fuck that and hooked me up with Apple TV( I love it over Comcast) with You Tube, your main regular shitload of channels,Hulu,Netflix,Disney,HBO Max,Movies I tune( pay for new movies) tv I tunes same thing pay for) but since my son has connections I’m not even paying a tv bill anymore!🤣🤣
The SF Chronicle has an obituary this week for Ralph Barbieri. It’s a fascinating thing to read. Not a typical obituary. It’s long, and tells a story, warts and all, of Ralph’s life. My thought is that Ralph wrote a lot of it himself. It’s very personal and specific, unvarnished, and has a lot of interesting stuff that I never knew about him. I didn’t know that, early-on, he had done some sports writing, and did some cover stories for Sport Magazine, including a hard-to-get long interview with Bill Walton in the 1970s, Ralph very well could have continued on that path and made a career of it, but he had fallen in love with radio along the way, and was willing to start from scratch in radio.
It’s worth reading; even if someone has no idea who Ralph was, the obituary is still interesting to read.
https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sfgate/obituary.aspx?n=ralph-barbieri&pid=196587122
Obviously Ralph didn’t write the first paragraph.
yeah, Ralph really asked the tough questions about steroids. Be there then.
Thanks for that zumiee. The Razor was truly a special person.
Barbieri penning his own self-aggrandizing obit (and I agree, that’s the only way that thing came into being) got me to thinking — Michael Scott could’ve done something similar, but, apparently, didn’t. My estimation of Scott just changed a bit. I can see Alan Watts in the distance, nodding and smiling in agreement. Barbieri never took himself “lightly.”
A Majors in golf at Harding Park municipal GG is going to grab all the headlines this weekend.
What’s really special is how this muni was so rundown to a cow pasture stage, the 2012 US Open at Olympic Club used it for freakin parking on all the holes!
It disgusted Sandy Tatum who was well respected in the golf world, decided to bring the course back to its original glory days with the help of then Mayor Willie “Downtown”Brown and Charles Scwab backing the project.
Charles said he would only do it if he they name the clubhouse after Sandy Tatum, which of course they did, and now it hosting a Major,it’s come along ways in 8 years..
Cool story re Harding Park. My dad and his friend volunteered at the Open at Olympic in 98. He had a blast. Worked hard for 2 days but got free admission the other 2 days.
Yeah that must of been a dream come true for your dad Mrsprtdude.
I had this guy who use to come into my work and he was a member at Olympic Club and yet he didn’t golf , only used the weight room? He said I can hook u up as a guest to play golf!
I was pumped up, but sadly talk is cheap and it never came about😡
Kap is clearly more interested in theory than strategy. And wtf is this “Watty”? Is he playing some sort of Bochy nostalgia card?
Baseball as it is now. Teams are trying to out-5-dimensional-chess each other. It does get tiresome.
Kuiper said it well the other night: the analytics have a reason for everything. Kuiper didn’t sound pleased with that. It’s a two-way street. Analytics also give an excuse for everything.
Clearly Watson facing Arenado is a bad move. I don’t care what else happened after that.
Kap says Craw definitely has the best range and arm for covering the left side. Meanwhile, Solano’s ok covering the 2B hole. So Kap moves Craw to the right of 2B and Solano to the tough shift position because a spray chart suggested that the ball was more likely to be hit to the right of 2B? That looks almost like trumpian logic to me.
Oh yeah that was so stupid bringing in Watson to face Arenado! Every Flapper was probably shaking their head saying he’s going yard! Anal listics figuring by Kappy is screwed up at times!
Ironically, most of the praise Kap is getting isn’t about the analytics, but more about the intangibles, the way the team plays hard and has competitive drive on a daily basis.
well, all the analytics they did also kept us from signing Bum who would have been a disaster. Now he’s Arizona’s disaster. This is like when Jason Schmidt went down to LA and continued to *help* us.
I got no gripe with analytics. Keeping bum last year and letting him go thereafter made a lot of sense. But making decisions based almost exclusively on a spray chart is like using a street map to figure out how to walk two miles across town without considering the hills.
Easy reason to get rid of Grave Duggar besides his .133 batting average.Giants face Lefties Ur anus an Opie the 1st 2 games and then Buehler game 3 with TBD in game 4
And then they’re is Kapler with his usual BS not naming any starters for the 4 games.Probably continuing his mind fuck with Roberts..
“And then they’re is Kapler with his usual BS not naming any starters for the 4 games.Probably continuing his mind fuck with Roberts..”
Or maybe the Gabe just needs a larger spreadsheet.
Pence is rockin’ a .037 batting average.
He’s going to go 1 for 40 before they do anything. He’s good in the clubhouse, whatever that’s worth these days. There’s no other argument for him staying, since there’s no fans in seats to care. The could DFA him and when nobody bites, just hire him back as another of their legion of coaches. I’m not in favor of a good player burning his reputation and fan legacy with bad play at the end of his career. This one’s on the ZMan, he did not have to bring Pence back. I hope he goes 10 for the next 20, but that’s a pipe dream…
That’s a crack pipe dream. But since Pence looks like he’s on the crack pipe anyway and with his usual 20 cups a day coffee fix as well is there any chance he’s a candidate for a crash cart scenario??
lqtm. Annoying that they simply replaced Posey with another has-been guy to fill out the bore corps(e).
Pence swings at 3-0 and grounds out to SS.
How in the hell does Men in Tights get a green light 3-0 when your hitting .036???
Still can’t get over all the ground ball outs in this yard. 11 gb vs. 1 fly according to cbs. unreal
shee it
Got in 4.5 hours today in heavy-duty manwork. Weather mostly cooperated. Maybe more on all that later. Checked into MLB gameday and saw that I hadn’t missed much except that how the hell did Z. slip Tyler Anderson out from underneath the Box of Rox? Biggest Giants news: Major league batting leader at a sizzling .452 is Donovan Solano.
Pence 1 for 2020.
Jesus..Freeland after breaking his belt and dicking around in the clubhouse for another one, and they still let him toss some more warmup pitches for what, breaking in the belt??
I thought the same, that was BS.
oh man Black’s analytics just screwed him over there!
“pitch him hard inside again” “ok skip” uh oh
DUBEEEE!
have a game Dubon!
Guessd the timing returning to the house from outdoors was fine. Popped back to the Flap briefly and then back to gameday and MAURICIO!
Dubon looks fine in CF. If he can just hit a little he can move needle on giants getting younger and more athletic.
Hey! Lookie, lookie, Pablo’s two hits today spiked his BA clear over the Mendoza line. He’s now hitting at a hefty .219.
Lookie, lookie, Pablo’s pair of hits today sailed his BA up, up, up—clear over the Mendoza line at a hefty .219.
Nice poke by DuGone…now just shut it down and close this bitch out…
Wreako Garcia’s quite an adventure. Or is it Reeko?
Fuckin’ Rico.
And fuck the ridiculous 3-batter rule, this stiff shoud’ve been pulled after the 2nd batter.
Story of the season. Get a nice little lead with a rally. Kapler inserts a reliever who is scared jizzless by the Box of Rox and just like that we are back in the underbelly. I was kinda thinking Shaun Anderson was good for another inning. Didn’t happen. This sure is one crazy shakedown cruise with the new manager running em out there.
Anderson’s pitch count was pretty low.
Jesus. Rewind to watch Dubon, and Colo scores 5 times. E 5.
We lead the league in shifts and we lead the league in errors. I think we shift too much. Analytics or analingus? So much for that split.
If you are going to shift, why move the 3rd baseman to 2nd? Most of the errors I’ve seen involve the monumental task of 3rd basemen taking grounders from the right side rather than the left. Can’t they just move everybody to the right?
I guess Mr. Kotter is still figuring out who can do what out of the pen, but this trial by fire with these unknown unplayed guys is crazy.
This season so far is so disjointed. Are they trying to win? Are they trying to evaluate? Are they trying to appease the casual fans? At various times in the same game the answer to these questions are all yes.
I mean seeing how the Astros blew everything up and said we are going to suck for 4 years seemed to be the approach they were looking at. Boston did the similar thing by trading a ton of guys a few years back. Thank God it was the Dodgers that ‘helped’ them, but what are we doing?
In a short season you can’t have 2 supposedly important guys like Pence and Pablo scuffling while you send down guys like Davis and call yourself a team that is evaluating their talent. They say they are ‘developing’ Bart while our current catchers are horrible offensively and defensively. And you can’t say you are trying to win by batting Pence continually in the 4 hole.
We don’t have time for these slumps and slow starts.
Ditto on Kapler handling his pitchers. Baragar was great in his previous outing so K. figured he’d throw him in again. Should have stuck with Shaun Anderson in the first place and more likely than not this sad turn of events would either not have happened or not got so deep in the hole. Big Shaun was a starter last season. 1 2/3 innings should not have been too much for him. So again, this one’s on the kid manager. Maybe he’ll eventually get it together with the roles of his bullies, but not holding my breath on that.
He’s far from being a master of BP’s like Bochy was…
Great post. I think Zaidi thinks he is so smart he can field a competitive team and rebuild at the same time.
I don’t think he can and would rather go full tear down and take our lumps for 2-3 years.
About another 0-5 are so we can get Pence.034 down to Pitcher Ron Herbel’s career .029 hitting mark.Still considered one of the worse hitters alltime.
Just a fucking joke and I automatically think he’s a guaranteed out,and that can’t even move a runner over to be somewhat productive! But Kapler’s steadfast denial that he’s still valuable and a STUD just waiting to breakout, it’s just a tragedy! How in the world can he keep covering for him and denying Davis and others a roster spot!!
Fitting Giants hit ball in ground again and wind up the game ending GIDP.
All the feel good from yesterday ruined in one very bad inning.
and on to LA yeow
Why don’t Kapler just take his huge analytics in his back pocket and wipe his ass with it..
I get the angst about team identity, but all previous approach went out the window this season with the advent of the mini-season. The Giants are in a playoff hunt. They wouldn’t be in the hunt in a regular season. No team brass on any team is going to pass up the chance to try to win the cheapie championship this season. It is about trying to win this season, which wasn’t the case earlier in the calendar year of 2020.
Well, then they should try to win by benching/cutting Pence and Panda. And use the pen better. This random access bullpen carousel is a joke.
“Random access bullpen”. I like that. Original?
If Longo can’t stay on the field, IR him for the season. Play Flores at 3rd. Fuck this goddamn random shit going on. Fuck this playing OFers out of position. And the shift for EVERY lefty.
I don;t know what Mr Kotter is trying to accomplish by putting everyone everywhere, but it isn’t working. The starting pitching has been fairly decent. The pen with all these random players is a mess. Gott pitches 1 inning a week. Watson less. These are the guys we are supposed to count on.
Should of kept Jandel Gustave for this bullpen, the guy was effective overall last year!
What got him in the doghouse and now DFA??
Surprised as hell when Gustave wasn’t re-upped. Did he have a good time with the wife or g.f. of one of the owners or other brass?
This squad can score, unlike most in the last decade.
Unfortunately, the pitching and fielding is spotty, at best.
3 outta 3 gets you to the WS.
2 outta 3 gets you to the post season.
1 outta 3 gets you to the off season…
where these guys are playing in the field don’t matter much when the ball is getting blasted to kingdom come as it was when I was listening on the radio to Murphy and Blackmon’s at bats…..
I think our identity is, we are not a very good team with a bunch of guys who seem to be trying their best. I’ll take that. For now. Our pitching isn’t very good. If we are going to be a .500 team this year we have to field the ball better and hit better to make up for what is going to be some pretty frustrating games from the pitchers.
Today certainly padded this stat.
At what point does horrible defense go on the coaches? At least we are in the games we lose. last year was already 10x worse than this.
“In the games”–you got that right. This bunch is not a “don’t care” buncha wimps.
Last year at this point we probably had about the same winning percentage as we do now. You are forgetting that 19-6 run in July.
Sad but true:
Pence’s batting average is actually a number on a roulette wheel…
The equine Uncle Chuck gets tested for class at Saratoga Saturday.
Then on to Louisville if it goes reasonably well…
should be exciting. There is separate racing channel here showing Saratoga and I remember convo with announcers being very impressed by one of Uncle Chuck races there (?)…set some record or something at distance?
Are a teenaged girl bust size in junior high school..
As to Zum and SD said earlier, here’s Kap in Chron: “We’re all aligned on that.(meaning him and FO). Right now, we’re in a playoff race and we’re in August. We’re treating it as such. We can manage development and winning simultaneously.”
I beg to differ.
