Kap-tain Failure

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 11, 2020

Not much to say about that game. It was not as close as the score indicated. Another catcher interference call. More errors. No hit through 6 or whatever it was. The Giants embarrassed themselves on many levels last night. You can be boring and irrelevant, that doesn’t mean you have to be embarrassing, too.

I am not ok with Kap having a learning curve. He got hired to do this job, it is a prestigious and coveted position. He needs to be able to handle all aspects of it. I don’t care if this is a throwaway season, Z didn’t know that when he hired Kap and Kap didn’t know that when he accepted the position.

You get a job like this, sure you can get better at it over time. But you gotta have the team ready to play. You have to be better than this. The team you lead has to be better than this.

Agree about Kap being ready for this job. This is not a job that provides “on the job training.” It is strange that the players play hard and do not quit, but they cannot field a lick, and they continue to make mental errors that you just cannot make at this level. It is frustrating as hell.

I have said since before the season started, I had zero expectations. I wanted to see some of the young guys play so they could get a solid evaluation. But I sure as hell expected more from Kap. The problem is, and someone mentioned this, I believe yesterday, that he probably has a really long leash, as he is Zaidi’s pick/guy.

  2. willedav said, on August 11, 2020 at 8:56 am

well, I think Z did view this as throwaway season from start. Pitching was gonna be awful as he dealt off some of it for hitter prospects and all he added were retread guys like Smyly Gausman and Cahill. They are all coming off subpar seasons looking to rebuild value, and Z would have dealt them off too if they did well. Still might.
Otherwise there is only very inexperienced pen guys alongside Watson. Pitching was bad last year and it’s worse this year–only small part of that imo goes on Kapler. Rest on Z and Harris.

It’s unfortunate none of the prospect SPs in system will gain anything out of this year and that is not fault of FO.
But, Giants aren’t going to get any better soon until pitching is fixed. They are at or near bottom in almost every category including homeruns and walks given up, a very bad combo. and if they keep gates closed in RF next year, that ain’t gonna help pitching either.

    • chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 9:18 am

I am not expecting any of this to be fixed “this year.” And I don’t think Z or Kap had that expectation, either. Again, I had no expectations in that regard. Where this team could and should be better, IMO, is in playing sound fundamental baseball (catch the ball, throw the ball, eliminate or minimize the mental errors, etc.).

  3. mrsprtdude said, on August 11, 2020 at 9:07 am

KAP IS BAD, AND I ALREADY BROUGHT IT UP..BUT ISN’T IT WEIRD HOW THINGS HAVE FLIPPED? FOR A FEW BAD YEARS OUR PITCHING WAS DECENT AND WE COULDN’T HIT A LICK. nOW WE CAN FINALLY HIT SOME (TOP 1/3 OF nl) BUT WE CAN’T PITCH. tHIS IS BETTER.
Sorry about caps. Didn’t ralize caps on, and now you know I can’t type and only look at the keyboard to get it done:)

I guess Z/Kap forgot to add Catcher Positioning Coordinator to the staff.

    • chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 9:24 am

Good point, Mac. Probably not needed when Posey was a possibility. Posey would probably be better than any coach they could get to fill that spot. But with the continued issues around fundamental catching (all the interference issues, and not covering home plate, etc.), they sure as hell could use something now.

And again, the talent is what it is (thanks trump). That isn’t going to get fixed this year, and will continue to be a work in progress next year, but damn, just play some clean baseball!

      • Carstie Clausen said, on August 11, 2020 at 9:31 am

Buster’s “time out” laid bare Zaidi/Harris worst decision of the off-season, not to re-up Vogt who happened to be lone of last season’s actual bright-spots. Worst part of that was that he wasn’t a high-dollar retention.

      • Flavor said, on August 11, 2020 at 10:03 am

agreed. Vogt would have fixed a lot of this nonsense caused by the unexpected hole Buster created by opting out

    • alleykat69 said, on August 11, 2020 at 9:36 am

      Lol 😂 Mac!!
Do you think the umpire would get ticked off if are catchers and him were all the way back close to the back stop to receive pitches while the batter is still in the normal batters box? It eliminates catcher interference, but does make the pitcher throw it about 80ft 6 inches instead of 60ft 6 inches..and harder to judge balls and strikes crossing the normal plate scenario I guess..

  5. willedav said, on August 11, 2020 at 9:21 am

Poor D of course does make pitching that much harder, adding needless baserunners on balls that should be converted into outs and extending pitch counts. The C/I stuff is just ridiculous.

Saw Mike Trout win game for Angels last night with 425 ft HR vs. A’s. It was his second HR of night, and he hit it off Petit, who hung breaking ball to Trout bottom 8 and that won game 10-9 for Angels they had trailed 9-4 earlier.
Next week we’ll see Trout in 4 game home/home with Angels.

  6. alleykat69 said, on August 11, 2020 at 9:26 am

This isn’t rocket science they’re are some moves that should be made if Kap has any balls and sits down with Z to discuss changes.
First you need to dump both Mr.Irrelevant &Mr.Food Spread, rah rah leadership isn’t even needed with bunch of bad news bears.Second, make Solano your full time DH are platoon him with Dickerson to make a lethal right/left combo and keep them fresh, neither one should have a glove on period.Third..Bring up my boy JAYLIN DAVIS NOW!! For god sake what’s wrong with an outfield of Yaz,Davis and Slater with speed, power and good arms?
And what about Zach Green is he still around? He could spell Longo are Crawfish at SS?Are even that same role could go to hot shot pickup Z made in Will Wilson who can play anywhere on the infield? I guess I’m just sayin I’m tired of seeing this life support core players still going out there and embarrassing themselves..And wow 😳 21 errors incredible!! Wasn’t that long ago they were one of the better fielding teams in baseball, just a distant memory from a better time..

  7. willedav said, on August 11, 2020 at 10:13 am

Zaidi spent deadline last year trading away pen guys, didn’t resign Smith in off season and then didn’t bother to replace anyone, and that last part is why we see what we do now. The deals were fine and got rid of contract of Melancon, brought in hitting prospects and avoided Giants having to pay top closer $$ in a year they weren’t gonna be competitive.
    .
Neither Z nor Harris did anything to give Kapler any pen help and left him with young inexperienced relievers except for Watson. This isn’t on Kapler at all–I don’t think he nor the coaching staff he hired are gonna be much good at fixing it, but he was handed a flawed group to begin with and Z/H are reaping what they sowed.

  8. Bozo said, on August 11, 2020 at 10:19 am

I think the Phillies found out that the players played hard for Kapler, for awhile.
As the Dodgers’ director of player development, Kapler’s skill set was on analytics, player nutrition and mental wellness. Ok, so the guy’s a robot or a Hunter Pence clone, make him the conditioning coach and get a manager.

  9. alleykat69 said, on August 11, 2020 at 10:52 am

How stupid are both Zach Plesac&Mike Clevinger 2/3 of a very talented Indians Rotation who decided to go out partying Saturday night .Plesac they knew about and forced him to drive back to Cleveland in a rental car and needs to be quarantined and tested twice before he can come back.

The kicker is they did not know about Clevinger going out with Plesac that night and this idiot ends up flying home with the team with the possibility of infected his unaware teammates.Clevinger is now under quarantine as well. So much of these supposed Hall monitors all teams are using, it’s not working!

And yes I get these players are restless and they want to go out and get alittle trim between their cheeks and gums, but this isn’t the time are season to do that, when you’re showing total irresponsibility to your teammates and coaches/families…

  10. zumiee said, on August 11, 2020 at 10:53 am

Gimme Bart on the roster. That solves a few things right there. Plus he would be fun to watch. This team needs a fun infusion. The Bore Core is about 1-24 in the last couple of games, I kid you not.

    • chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 11:11 am

Every Giant fan wants to see Bart, but I don’t see it happening. If they bring him up, he plays in THREE games, and the season is scrapped at any point after that, Joey gets awarded one year of ML service. If I am the GM, the potential costs far outweighs the benefits in this season that means nothing.

  11. Flavor said, on August 11, 2020 at 10:57 am

at this point Belt and Crawford, as inept and weak as they are at the plate, are goddamn near necessities in the field.

    • zumiee said, on August 11, 2020 at 11:02 am

I hear ya, but both might hit under .200 this season. There’s not enough defense to make up for that, IMO.

  12. zumiee said, on August 11, 2020 at 11:01 am

The thought of Craw and Belt for another season after this one, and Longoria for two more, is unbearable.
At least we know Sandoval and Pence are gone after this season. Obviously those two should be gone right now.

    • chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 11:08 am

Shark is gone after this season, too.

Zum where are the replacements? The giants haven’t let Green play at all. 1b you could fill with Flores I guess but who covers SS? Z/H have lot of work to do to fix IF.
Luciano hasn’t even played Low A ball yet and neither has Wilson. Unlikely they show up before 2023 since this season has been waste for them.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on August 11, 2020 at 12:01 pm

The waste-line is both long and broad for Los Gigantes. Calling up Bobbie Burns; “The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft agley and leave us naught but grief and toil for promised joy.”

Giants brass knew this was gonna be a trying season; but with the plandemic and the overlong lockdown (please do a search of Sweden’s sensible approach on this whole matter) totally gobsmacked the Giants long-term plans because of the total shut-down of minor league baseball.

Accordingly, as an organization in deepest rebuild and with a considerable number of genuine prospects in the pipeline for the first time in more than half a generation; SF got totally gobsmacked by the mess. Outcome, is that the team this season may be somewhere between the Bad News Bears and lovable losers.

Okay, we knew that. But the upshot looks considerably worse as the 2022 target may end up being held off to 2023. So we can’t even lose for losing.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 11, 2020 at 12:46 pm

Sweden (10 mill pop) fucked up hard. Sweden has 5,700 deaths by the using the herd method.

Neighboring Finland and Norway (11 mill combined) have 850 death combined.

      • chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 1:27 pm

Unca beat me to the punch. Sweden is NOT an example of how to handle a pandemic. Look to Italy and France as successful plans. Also, we all have our opinions, and I don’t put mine above those of anyone else, but I ain’t buying the “plan” demic stuff. All good brother.

      • snarkk said, on August 11, 2020 at 1:36 pm

I have a neighbor physician who is originally from Sweden, and goes back fairly often. He says they are crazy with this herd thing…

  17. chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 11:41 am

One of the most glaring telling tale for the Giants ineptitude is earned runs vs. unearned. Last night is a prime example. Webb gave up five runs, but only two were earned runs, thanks to the Giants continuing to make mental mistakes (C interference), booting the ball, and throwing the ball away.

More than anything else, I would like to see them settle in and play some clean ball. Agree with others that it may be time to have Donny Barrels pinch-hit, exclusively.

Next up on my wish list is they DFA Pence and Panda. They are truly dead weight. At least with Belt and Craw you get their better than average defense.

    • djloo27 said, on August 11, 2020 at 11:45 am

      • alleykat69 said, on August 11, 2020 at 12:21 pm

Geez how come Panda doesn’t use that song for his walkup AB? It’s perfect 👌

    • Carstie Clausen said, on August 11, 2020 at 12:13 pm

Webb is a quality prospect–a potential staff ace. What a shame for him to see all his efforts get whacked upside the head by terrible defense, particularly a pair of catchers who cannot possibly add up to a single passable receiver. Kid might need some close personal counseling by a wise elder—oops, the only possible candidate for that is Wotus. I only say possible in that instance as I know next to nothing about him. Wondering if it would be possible for the brass to contact Posey and see if he could spend some face-time with the kid (even by video if that’s all he would agree to).

Meanwhile, some of the guys in Kapler’s Kiddie Korps Koaching Kombo maybe should be kicked upstairs or whatever and perhaps there are a few mature old baseball hands available who could provide some balance to the equation. This team needs help soonest in the form of some guiding lights who know what the fuck baseball is all about and are fully capable of sharing their wisdom with our discombobulated team.

While we are at it, perhaps Z. & H. could also use some senior advisors who are wise in the ways of the game and psychologically astute enough to not upset any egos in the process.

      • chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 1:31 pm

Kap is Zaidi’s guy. No way I see them sending any of Kap’s coaching staff upstairs, etc., in favor of some “mature baseball hands.” And I don’t know how much of this season’s shenanigans you can hang on the coaching staff. Pitchers have to pitch and the D has to catch, throw, and minimize the mental errors. This team just isn’t very good, and I don’t expect to see a semblance of respectability until 2022, at the earliest.

  18. Winder said, on August 11, 2020 at 11:56 am

We have been playing very sloppy baseball. I think Kap should bring up the Sac squad on our next day off to play our A-team. Might just bring more competition and wake up some players. There is no excuse for sloppy ball.

  19. alleykat69 said, on August 11, 2020 at 12:02 pm

Congrats on MLB to throw down the hammer on Houston’s hitting coach Alex Cintron as the main instigator in the A’s/Astros game giving him a 20 GAME SUSPENSION!!
Ramon Laureano receives a 5 game suspension, think his should of been less maybe 3? He was constantly getting drilled in the series like the Astros held a vendetta against him..

Cintron crossed the line saying derogatory remarks toward Ramon’s mother and coming from a coach who are set on higher standards is just wrong on many levels. And then to keep chirping and bring it on hand jesture. then puss out and have 3 teammates in front of you for protection just shows him how much of a wimp he really is!!

  20. gianthead said, on August 11, 2020 at 12:06 pm

Let’s hope that they have Joey Bart getting the right catching regimen coaching….

  21. alleykat69 said, on August 11, 2020 at 12:18 pm

The good news eventually is they get rid of Pence,Panda,Shark next year, maybe find a drunk GM to take Cueto at the trade deadline (Atlanta’s hurting some at pitching I believe and they took Melonface from us) but it still leaves them with Belt,Crawford, Posey and Longo yikes!

But the one thing Z is doing right is just handing out a lot of current 1 year contracts, so it doesn’t kill them in the future and if one of the players produce especially a pitcher he can add him again next year and dump the rest that are not..

    • chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 1:37 pm

Yeah, that is why I say 2022 (when we lose Craw, Belt, and possibly Cueto) is the earliest to expect significant changes and improvements. Craw and Posey – full no-trade clauses. Belt – limited NT clause (can block 10 clubs).

The only way I see losing Belt or Craw early is next year at the trade deadline, IF by some miracle, either or both are having a good year.

Sit down and enjoy the suckage. 😉

  22. unca_chuck said, on August 11, 2020 at 12:49 pm

Totally with you on this Flav. I had little expectation for this season, but the coach is fucking up wildly with all the weird position changes, stupid pitching changes, the constant shifts, and the overall shoddy play.

13 coaches and no one can tell the catcher where to put himself? It boggles the mind.

I wonder if they get any offers for Yaz.

When you have guys switching positions often, it’s tough to get defensive skills consistency for any one guy on any one of the positions he mans. If you always play SS, you’ve got muscle memory on the moves and throws from SS. If you get moved around from SS to 3rd to 2nd, not so much…

    • alleykat69 said, on August 11, 2020 at 2:23 pm

IF I were voting, I would never vote for a woman who (according to my Sandersnista nephew –age 26–said that she was the prosticutor for 50k cannabis cases (could that number be possible?). Then he went on to relate that his friendship circle considers her a hypocrite because, like Wee Willie Clitclincher and Obama, she admitted to smoking. Likely, that demographic will not be voting in large numbers. I asked him if anyone would be voting for Kanye West. Nope.

I would never vote for any prosticutor unless they took a knee and asked forgiveness from their victimless crimes victims. Scores of millions of Americans have suffered loss of jobs, homes, cars, friends and even families because of cannabis convictions. I would consider myself among that number as the helicopter incident was one in which federal involvement was totally and absolutely uncalled for and to have used a helicopter when much more reasonable searches were entirely possible was every bit a gigantic over-reach by the Border Patrol enforcers for the utterly contra-constitution Department of Homeland $ecurity.

Face it, gentlemen, the United $tates of America CORPORATION (as duly incorporated during the Reagan-Bu$h regime under the laws of Delaware) is totally out of control. To vote for a prosticutor for any position higher than dogcatcher is stark and utter complicity unless that former prosticutor is willing to take a knee.

I do remember Byron Scott when he was at ASU and was high scoring freshman. then later had to sit out a year as academic casualty. i think they called it Prop 48 or something in those days, and he left after junior season

Sixers had swept Riley’s Lakers and there was some grumbling in LA and Nixon got exiled to Clips. From what I read, some vet players weren’t too happy about it and froze rookie Scott out at first.

Belt is just absolutely fucking worthless with a bat

    • willedav said, on August 11, 2020 at 6:35 pm

maybe he was fooled but that pitch was on outer half. He rolls over it and grounds it right into the shift for GIDP. I just don’t get it–he gets pitches like this dang near every single AB and doesn’t take advantage of all the room on that side of field.

  38. Macdog said, on August 11, 2020 at 6:18 pm

If Belt and Craw have to be in there because of their D, then they need to be relegated to the bottom of the order, 8-9, or I guess 7-9 to break up lefty-lefty.

Wilmet! stop platooning this guy and get him in there every day

    • chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 6:46 pm

I think it was Loo who mentioned the other day that Wilmet has never been an everyday guy, and wondered how he would hold-up/do playing every day. It’s a good question, IMO. But you never know until you try. Also, doesn’t seem to be the modus operandi of this regime.

    Is Solano hurt?

Let’s say in my senior softball league, I was not only leading my team in hitting but I was leading the entire league in hitting. Then I show up to the game and see my name not only wasn’t in the lineup but there were 3-4 losers in the line-up instead of me who can’t hit the ball out of the infield. Believe me, I would be having major issues with the manager.

Hopefully, Solano went into Kapler’s office and discussed why he wasn’t in the line-up. If he didn’t get the answer he liked, there should be some objects thrown around the office by Solano.

Again, play Flores at 1st. Solano is the DH. Slater should bat second, Dickerson in the 4-5 hole. Get Bart in the line-up.

Kamala Harris didn’t prosecute 50,000 marijuana cases when she was SF DA. The number, according to Tulsi Gabbard at one of last year’s debates, was 1,500, and that was at a time when medical weed was legal here and readily available (anyone could get a card, the names of the MDs willing to issue them were all around). None of the prosecutions were low level.

Harris obviously was recruited by the SF democratic establishment to take down incumbent DA Terrence Hallinan, who was in decline — too many head shots as a boxer and street fighter, too many drugs. (A Janis Joplin biographer says that she gave Hallinan so much heroin one night she had to revive him from a possible OD with a BJ.) So Harris ran as a progressive pragmatist. She had to distinguish herself against Gavin Newsom, who’d made headlines with his legalization of gay marriage.

As to her AG’s tenure — AG usually means aspiring governor: It’s a stepping stone. Is she a hypocrite? No more than any other mainstream politician. Would I prefer a ticket of Bernie and AOC? Hell yes. But I’ve been a socialist boomer long enough not to expect miracles. Just fucking dump trump. And keep on doing the real work.

    • chipower9 said, on August 11, 2020 at 6:54 pm

  46. xoot said, on August 11, 2020 at 6:54 pm

oh Yaz almost made that play. They got out of the inning though with the play at third. I swear Reddick always tries to take the extra base. At the E Coli, when he was with the a’s, I saw Buster gun him down on a play very similar to that one. (The throw came home late and Reddick tried to extend his gains.)

  47. willedav said, on August 11, 2020 at 7:01 pm

rough night for Yaz so far out there. That was a tough grab, sliding that way it’s always hard to hang onto the ball.
Anderson threw 60 some pitches vs. Rox in 5 innings and did really well. He’s already over 40 and getting lit up here so Kapler has to have plan B.

B Fleming: Liked your line-up last night—except for the part about Bart of course, who I would stash in Sacro-tomato all season.

K Harris strikes me as a total political animal. She’ll do or say whatever it takes to win over the crowd in front of her that second and has zero problem flip flopping as the need arises. Not a bad talent to have if ur looking to get elected at all costs. She is a formidable force for sure and the media will back her big time.

Chuck—you gotta write a book, man. That padlock story is another classic from you.

    • willedav said, on August 11, 2020 at 7:42 pm

yeah I like his lineup too. Dickerson should be lower, Slater higher and Wilmet in there somewhere.
Harris even I don’t care for her. Might ultimately be good for California whereas incumbent only messes with us.

Chuck seems to have already had 9 lives. He’s his own adventure novel. great guy so glad we all met up.

The Drumpf feared Harris the most as a VP. She’s female, of color, tough as nails, provably middle to moderate left middle of the road, with law and order background. Drumpf’s dirty trix misogyny and racist machine will go into overdrive with Harris having been a “protege”, among other things, of Willie Brown. Whatever. She’s earned her stripes at local, state and federal levels since then. She’s taking no prisoners the next two months on skewering Drumpf, her main task. She won’t waste much time roasting Mother’s boy. She’ll take care of him in the one debate; that useless sycophant will be a puddle of sweat before, during and after…

Battle of the Brandons. Began with Brandon (Crawford=B1) vs. Bielak–Brandon, that is. Dick makes it interesting with a single, driving in Tromp (who grounded into a force taking out Brandon #1. With two outs Brandon (BB9) takes three balls, gets a couple strikes on him and then forcefully pops up to the shortstop, giving Brandon #2 Bielak, a chance to grab some pine and rest a spell. But with the number of pitches in the inning (including 6 to Brandon #3) Brandon #2 may ride pine again after a shower with 84 pitches over five and obviously flagging vs. both the bottom three and top three in the SF L.U. My Brandonese question is why the hell Gabie-Baby didn’t bat BB9 in his correct position–9th.
