Untouchable…like in Elliot Ness?

WordPress has completely changed their format for writing and uploading threads. As it is with anything new these days, it’s unnecessary and worse than the old way.

So this thread will be short and sweet and hopefully this loads properly.

Bart calls for a pitch high, and Gausman keeps putting it right down the middle. G has been fortunate so far.

    Nice block there by Bart.

Bart cuts his CERA in half, pretty rapid improvement.

  10. chipower9 said, on August 20, 2020 at 7:26 pm

If this team had even a decent bullpen, and had played cleaner ball, they could well be 14-12, maybe 15-11 now.
Of course, IF my aunt has balls, she’d be my uncle.

  22. unca_chuck said, on August 20, 2020 at 7:49 pm

Belt could easily cover that pitch and drive it to left field but he chooses to take the walk.

Why I get annoyed by him.

    • James said, on August 20, 2020 at 8:01 pm

He hasn’t driven much of anything to LF in a couple years – all he does is hit weak fly balls in that direction. He shoulda been rung up on that 2-2 pitch, which fooled him.

  38. zumiee said, on August 20, 2020 at 8:54 pm

This drives Brian Kenny nuts. Managers trying to get the starter through the fifth inning for the win. It has nothing to do with winning the game.

    • zumiee said, on August 20, 2020 at 8:55 pm

Kenny is against W/L records for pitchers. It’s a holdover from the 1800s.

    • Macdog said, on August 20, 2020 at 8:57 pm

      Who’s Brian Kenny?

      • zumiee said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:00 pm

He has an analytics show on the MLB Network.
I read his book. It has some interesting things in it.
His personality on TV can wear thin at times.

      • zumiee said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:04 pm

Kenny is one of the people who believes RBIs is a useless stat.

      • zumiee said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:07 pm

He believes clutch hitting isn’t a real thing.
TF believed that, too, and argued that point often.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:09 pm

Really. WoPR+ is the most important stat?

    • unca_chuck said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:06 pm

With our bullpen, I’m leaning toward leaving him in.

  39. unca_chuck said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:10 pm

I can see how clutch hitting would even out over the course of a season, but RBIs?

  43. willedav said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:21 pm

    Loo at 7:58—5 hour game?
Isn’t that the whole idea behind the 3 hitter rule for pen guys? Hasn’t done any good, it’s useless. and it does screw up how mgr uses his guys.

fwiw, rbi is one of the stats Keith Law disses too, early in his book. Point is has less to do with individual who gets all the credit.””…it is an individual statistic that depends far too much on the performance of other players—in this case, whether the hitters ahead of the player get on base enough for him to drive them in.”

    • unca_chuck said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:31 pm

By that logic, the runners who score on someone else’s hit didn’t do a good enough job getting themselves in. So, runs are a meaningless stat, right? Runs are tracked. The hit is part of a batting average, and RBI is who drives in the runners. So, scoring runs actually wins you games, right? But the people responsible shouldn’t get the credit? How do you track that any other way, oh nevermind. Paralysis by analysis.

      • djloo27 said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:35 pm

      • James said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:43 pm

Getting on base and hitting for power produces runs. Your own ability to do that largely measures your effectiveness on offense. It’s that simple. Joey Bart’s double was the key hit in the last run the Giants scored, but Belt got credit for the run scored, Dickerson the RBI.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 20, 2020 at 10:21 pm

Nailed it! DJ that is. Runs scored is a stat. But Bart’s hit is more important than Belt’s? Not really If Belt grounds out, Bart doesn’t score.

        Calling RBIs useless is ludicrous.

What does Anderson have against Trout? Yeah the pitch wasn’t that close but it was up near his head again.Maddon going ballistic with F words..
Trout answers with a ringing triple..

  53. willedav said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:42 pm

Unc fwiw here’s his argument. The year Barry Bonds hit 73 HRs he had 137 rbis. So that season was most ever for HRs in history, but because Bonds had so few guys on ahead of him, doesn’t crack 120th most for rbis in a single year.

He compared Bonds and Hank Aaron.
Bonds hit 762 HRs 450 solo and had 412 runners on for others
Aaron hit 755 HRs 399 solo and had 482 runners on for others.

So Bonds hit more HRs in about 300 fewer games, but had almost 300 fewer rbis than Aaron.
Hence, ” Bonds was the better hitter but Aaron gets the rbi glory.”

    • djloo27 said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:49 pm

I think Mays’ RBI totals suffered from lack of “table-setters” his entire career.
      52/112 (?) in ’65…

      • alleykat69 said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:58 pm

No doubt Mays suffered when both weak hitting Hal Lanier&Dick Schofield in the LU..

      • alleykat69 said, on August 20, 2020 at 10:01 pm

True Loo, You can’t count on weak hitting Hal Lanier are Dick Schofield to set the table much

      • willedav said, on August 20, 2020 at 10:07 pm

        mm makes sense Loo.
maybe tomorrow I search through box scores from 1965, see who was hitting in front of Mays at that time.

    • unca_chuck said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:55 pm

Sucks for Bonds, but just because he suffered from lesser players around him than Aaron, tough noogies. That doesn’t make the stat any less important. Just that there are variables.

You might as well adjust for ballparks, wind conditions during games, humidity levels, time zones, etc etc.

      • xoot said, on August 20, 2020 at 9:58 pm

tough noogies is a sabrstat I haven’t seen before

      • willedav said, on August 20, 2020 at 10:09 pm

all he’s saying is that the variables do make a difference.
If you only compared rbis Aaron had way more however he had way more opportunities because of other hitters.

      • James said, on August 20, 2020 at 10:10 pm

Great players over many years will get a lot of RBI. They are just not a reliable way to measure the relative greatness of those players. It’s also not a way to measure the relative value of lesser players. There are other stats that accomplish that more accurately.

This game is interminable. Bart got a crappy breaking ball inside and took it. He got the same hanging pitch again, over the plate and he ripped it 109 mph down the line. Well, that’s what’s he supposed to do.

For some reason, I just got a news alert that the KC Chiefs have banned headdresses and face paint and other dubiously derivative indigenous costume gags from home games. (As if fans will attend games soon.) Makes sense. But man, I hope they never capitulate and apologize for the fans who threw baseballs at Bo Jackson’s helmet as he ran into the tunnel at half time.

    • djloo27 said, on August 20, 2020 at 10:03 pm

      • xoot said, on August 20, 2020 at 10:11 pm

Good question. No word on the nag, far as I can see. According to the Wash. Post, “Arrowhead Stadium” is fair game. And this: “The Chiefs also said they are ‘engaged in a thorough review process of the Arrowhead Chop’ performed by fans at games.”

Well, I sure hoped Bart would go yard in his first game, but WTF, it is good that we’re getting a look at him. I know the Angel’s pitching sucks, maybe even as bad as ours, but good to take three of four from them. Time to take it to the snakes tonight.
