A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Niners And Maybe Giants, Too?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 13, 2020

NFL is back and I really can’t believe it, actually. But if they’re willing to play I’m willing to watch and gamble. And it sounds like we have some good news about the Giants—if I’m understanding this correctly, and I am out of town so I might not be, The Dick had a false positive test and and subsequently tested neg twice. That is excellent news.

I’ve been tested 6 times (and once for antibodies). Everything has always come back negative. I know it’s frustrating to have Dick test false + but that doesn’t change the importance of testing. I had a buddy of mine the other day say, “what’s the point of getting tested? You could walk outside right after the test and get it.”

True, idiot, but if you test + then you know it’s time to immediately quarantine and begin contact tracing. I’m not sure what so hard to figure out about this. If you find out you are + at any point in this take the necessary steps to get better as well as keep yourself away from other people.

(and yes, I recognize this thread straddles the line of political talk. That’s all I’m going to say about it).

Thx Flav I was trying to find out for certain what was up today.
Btw good day for Giants yesterday as teams around them in standings almost all lost–Reds Mets Marlins Rox (on 3 run bomb in 11th) and Brewers. Only Cards won. Margin is still only few games + or -.

  3. willedav said, on September 13, 2020 at 8:18 am

Also leaves only one game to be made up, likely when SD comes to SF for final homestand games of season.

Our pitchers whoever they will be must dig deep. Today is crucial and you know the Pads would like nothing better than to clobber us. The Niner game should go off but the air index is really close to being 200.

Cueto’s pitching the first game, Winder.
I’m positive about this, but it could be a false positive…

Niners game should be OK unless things get worse—165 ish now.
Heard a cut this morning on jazz station I listen to that struck me—Daahoud, done by guitarist Emily Remler from LP i had “East to Wes”. Beautiful LP and her version of this great song by Clifford Brown was fantastic…she died at age 32 in Sydney Australia while on tour 1990 after losing battle with H.

Man Raiders offense looks really good so far. Ruggs left field before halftime walking kinda funny. Carr with beauty of TD pass to Nelson Agholor and he hit Ruggs earlier for 45 yd gain. Running back Jacobs is really good to begin with.
Raiders D though, looks like mid season form–they can’t stop Carolina either.

    • alleykat69 said, on September 13, 2020 at 11:25 am

Looked like Ruggs rolled an ankle being tackled near the sidelines.Hopefully ok,just hope he holds up durability wise for a whole season. What blazing speed he possesses though, 4.27 40 at the combine. They have to find many ways to get him the pigskin, like KC does with Tyreek Hill..

    • willedav said, on September 13, 2020 at 11:39 am

they’ve held McCaffrey in check so far but Bridgewater going up and down field on them.

I have Josh Jacobs on my fantasy team, he’s killing it with 2TD’s and 22 pts so far.
Doesn’t hurt to also have QB Lamar Jackson, and WR’s Michael Thomas&Chris Godwin, gives me a knowing nod cigar moment..

  24. unca_chuck said, on September 13, 2020 at 4:36 pm

    We desperately need this game.

Jimmy G looked like absolute shit today. Very disheartening to see him take unnecessary sacks, and miss open guys. He should have had the TD to Bourne and was underthrown.

    • Winder said, on September 13, 2020 at 4:42 pm

He didn’t looked like he progressed any. It’s either the route running or he’s just off target.

  25. Flavor said, on September 13, 2020 at 4:37 pm

Jimmy G looked like absolute shit today. I’d take Kyler Murray over him 10/10 times. One of them has the intangibles one of them does not

    • xoot said, on September 13, 2020 at 4:39 pm

“intangibles”? Murray makes plays under pressure. That’s pretty tangible. And I don’t think there’s anything intangible about Jimmy G’s flaws.

      • Flavor said, on September 13, 2020 at 5:37 pm

making a play on the run scrambling, to me, is an intangible. You can’t teach what to do in that situation. And Jimmy G, on the run, is a failure waiting to happen

    • willedav said, on September 13, 2020 at 4:49 pm

He also has Hopkins to go with Fitzgerald but yeah he moved ball up/down field and into the end zone where G could not. All those 3rd down misses, yuk.

  26. James said, on September 13, 2020 at 4:50 pm

Maybe Joey Bart’s arm can save the day, if Jimmy G’s couldn’t.

  27. willedav said, on September 13, 2020 at 4:54 pm

I think Flav is right tho–Murray has the ability to figure out where/when to run and looks much improved over last season. So does his passing game.
G looks so wooden and missed open guys all day. Take away the long one to Mostert, pretty underwhelming.

    • willedav said, on September 13, 2020 at 4:55 pm

And slide. Niners hurt themselves with dumb penalties twice there, plus getting punt blocked.

  28. mrsprtdude said, on September 13, 2020 at 4:58 pm

All around effort in a bad loss. D couldn’t get a key stop. Bad special teams. Jimmy sucked. 3rd down % waful. Why the hell don’t we run Mostert more. Kills me

That was a factor, no doubt. But the Pads bullpen was all-business, their hitters determined and devastating and Clevinger a nasty surprise most of these guys had never previously faced. Without getting Dicked around,SF might have taken one of the three.

The Giants are the 8th playoff seed at the end of today.

  49. chipower9 said, on September 14, 2020 at 8:18 am

Yes, Giants in the 8 hole. 1.5 games up on Brewers and Rox, and 2 up on Cincy and Mets.

  50. willedav said, on September 14, 2020 at 8:30 am

small sample size, but Tatis Jr. didn’t impress me. 1-9 in 3 games 1 rbi. Machado hurt us more so did others.
Yesterday he had chance to do damage with 2 on vs. Rogers, and rolled over on outside pitch and Longo threw out runner at plate.
Next up Machado took outside pitch into RF for rbi then Yaz threw behind Tatis Jr. and picked him off affer he rounded bag couple steps off. Huh? Bart nailed him trying to steal 2b earlier too. Wasn’t MVP type of series.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on September 14, 2020 at 9:52 am

Yeah, we had TDatis’ number. Wish that could have been said for the rest of them. That team is loaded and the facedown between them and the LaBumbos should be a classic. Wishing them luck thereabout not at the series at season’s end.

  51. willedav said, on September 14, 2020 at 8:45 am

Pavs says Gausman to get MRI today. Not ruled out from making next start, pending results.
MLBTR says SF put Gott on IL with elbow strain and had called Garcia back after sending him back down.
2 in Seattle followed by 3 at the A’s this week. That stretch with A’s has Giants playing 10 in a row plus make up DH vs. SD here to end regular season.

  52. willedav said, on September 14, 2020 at 8:58 am

Feel bad for Dickerson too. Who would do something like that, put his name out there and say he’d broken protocol without confirmation? Very irresponsible, especially when it comes to his private life and health.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on September 14, 2020 at 9:54 am

Truly a low-blow and right when we didn’t need that.

  53. Winder said, on September 14, 2020 at 10:01 am

San Diego’s team is just way better than ours. We still have a long way to go.

    • snarkk said, on September 14, 2020 at 10:10 am

      Bingo.
Giants can take care of the likes of Dbacks, Rocks, and Seattle to a +.500, but the big boy teams are a different thing. Giants now are the Pads 3 years ago, maybe a little better, but in rebuild mode…

      • willedav said, on September 14, 2020 at 10:21 am

yes. Their pitching young and old is just much the better and that is not an easy fix. The kid they used in relief Morejon is a future SP too. giants prospect pitchers are years behind.

      • Winder said, on September 14, 2020 at 10:25 am

yeah, our pitching is gonna take some time before it gets legit. Maybe drafting priorities should move to pitching. That’s what i believe.

  54. Winder said, on September 14, 2020 at 10:29 am

There is only so much usable stuff you can pull out of a scrap heap. I think we have done fairly well doing that so far but to be contenders we gotta get some better players. I am surprised how well Belt has played lately, I had given up on him.

  55. zumiee said, on September 14, 2020 at 10:40 am

For all the great things Sabean/Evans did for the Giants over the years, they spent the last 10 years of their regime doing an absolutely terrible job of drafting pitchers.

    • zumiee said, on September 14, 2020 at 10:45 am

They did draft Zack Wheeler, a quality pitcher.
      Speaking of Wheeler:
“Wheeler, who left the Mets after seven seasons to join the rival Phillies on a five-year, $118 million deal in the offseason, is having his next start pushed back because he injured a nail on his pitching hand while putting on his pants.
“It’s very sore,” manager Joe Girardi said Thursday night. “You can’t make this up.””

  56. alleykat69 said, on September 14, 2020 at 12:07 pm

Better his nail I guess, then his penis like Ben Stiller in Something about Mary..

  57. Macdog said, on September 14, 2020 at 12:34 pm

Yeah, Giants are 5-14 vs. teams over .500, in this case the Big 3: Dodgers 4-6, Pads 1-5, A’s 0-3.

    • snarkk said, on September 14, 2020 at 12:53 pm

Slow day, so I’ll mention some Bay Area winning that happened yesterday. Paul Kerschen, a programmer in the org I used to manage, received a best of in the 2020 Northern California Book Awards for general fiction. The competition included Dave Eggers. He’s a brilliant writer (and programmer) and a genuinely good guy to boot. One of the negatives of retirement has been losing regular interaction with folks like him.

Anyway, Paul’s the real deal, and there might be one or two other pretentious faux literati among the Flap’s galoots who’ll be as taken by this book as I was:

I didn’t watch or pay much attention to the niners last year until very late in the season, so apologies in advance, but didn’t JG lead them to a few shootout/4th quarter wins in 2019? If so, what’s different now? I didn’t watch yesterday. I’m naturally skeptical when one player gets blamed, especially since football, unlike baseball, is a sport that actually demands the coordination of an entire team on both sides of the ball. I was also a big fan of Steve Young, who was shat on for no good reason.

    • djloo27 said, on September 14, 2020 at 5:52 pm

  69. Carstie Clausen said, on September 14, 2020 at 10:35 pm

New big dog in town? Kinda looked that way tonight as the relentless and explosive Padres messed up Kershaw and the LaBumbos. Now I don’t feel quite so bad about the second game on Sunday in which they bested SF 3-1. Webb pitched decently well for four full, giving up a run on 4 hits and a single walk. He did throw a lot of pitches though, so that must have influenced Kapler. Five special K’s for him, so with more experience under his belt, he may well be looking good in ’21. Selman had his first bad outing in awhile. A learning experience when facing a championship quality team.

DLoo. Niner D celebrating before the game was over. Lame lame lame. At least Shanahan didn’t give them a game ball before the game was over. Grr
