I guess you could argue we just aren’t very good at 7 inning double headers. Of course, those were against the 2 best teams in the league so maybe we just aren’t very good at playing the best teams. Either way, we are back to playing the friendly Mariners and it’s a good time to get back on the Covid-Free beam with a success……

M’s split vs. A’s yesterday, winning first game after being down 5-0.
Lamet of Pads wiped out LA through 7 last night with 11 Ks only 1 run allowed. Opie didn’t pitch badly either but was tagged for 3 runs in 6 1/3 as their pen blew up after he came out in 7th and allowed 5 run inning.
Dodgers lineup last night had 4 players batting under Mendoza line—Pederson Muncy and the two fill ins on IF Rios and their prize prospect Lux who is hitting .163 Bellinger is at .215 with .707 OPS. wow
Yeah, tough season for another big star and ’18 MVP Christian Yelich: .196 avg., .744 OPS.
Agree on the DH synopsis. As someone mentioned yesterday, I think our guys are 5-14 in games against teams above .500. One day, one game at a time and see what happens. If we sneak into the playoffs, maybe we surprise one of those +.500 teams.
Pads only game and a half back of LA. Giants did lose ground to Reds who swept DH from Pirates and are only game back, with 2 more vs. Pirates while Sf is in Seattle.
Like to get Mac perspective on NY giants. Felt bad for QB with goal line pick that seemed to turn game. running game on both sides of ball definite factor too. NYT story mentioned inexperience in secondary; going against Roth and their good receivers isn’t easy. Schuster longtime nemesis from USC days.
It’s probably going to be another crappy season. You’ll see for yourself in a couple weeks vs. Niners. Yeah, that INT was a brutal way to end what was a magnificent drive for Jones. Pitt sold out big time to stop Barkley and that obviously worked. DBs and OL are probably biggest issues. Two DBs ran into each other on Steelers’ TD right before half. Giants’ final TD late was the first time I saw #48 Dupree, who destroyed the Giants all night, get blocked.

Growing pains will continue for Danny Dimes, no way should he have thrown that ball other then out of bounds at the goal line.Rolling to his left with 2 Pittsburgh Steelers defenders in his face was just bad judgment leading to an easy pick.Agree with Mac, Pitt had a game plan to swarm Barkley like most teams will try and do and force Dimes to beat you throwing the ball.Besides Slayton nobody stepped up.They did play good defense early on then faded in the 2nd half like the offense.
Yep, last year fumbles was the big problem for Jones, now it’s INTs so far. Agree about Slayton. Engram didn’t do squat, that was disturbing.
Yup. There were 2 receivers and 4 defenders in a small space even if DJ got the ball out clean. That play was DOA.
Was unsure about baseball playoff seedings, but there was interesting column on fangraphs talking about AL seeding battle.
In both leagues top 3 spots go to Division winners and 4-6 go to whomever finished 2nd in each division. So Giants are battling to be one of the two 3rd place teams–currently Phils and Reds for 7th and 8th seeds. Is this right?
One of Garoppolo’s problems going back to last season was inability to decide to throw a ball away quickly enough if his reads didn’t develop anyone open enough to pass to. Instead he’d stand there and take a sack.
There was one play Sunday when he was under pressure took a step left, then right and then got spun around and hammered for a sack.
First thing I thought was, he sure ain’t Fran Tarkenton. And could have just thrown ball away out of bounds and avoided the loss.
I looked at the Niners passing stats last year. They were slightly below average in sacks allowed despite a slow footed and allegedly slow-witted QB. They had the 7th best passing offense, on a run-oriented team. JG led the league in winning 4th quarter drives (a kinda dumb stat, but . . .)
With football I really am largely “not watching” the games, but I remain skeptical that the 49ers fortunes are exclusively tied to Jimmy Garopollo’s frail psyche. It’ll be interesting to see if his performance follows Kap’s downward trajectory.
Our #1 and 2 WR’s were out our Oline is halfway new. I am just hoping this was a rust game for us. Jimmy showed glimpses of what we saw on Sunday last year also. But, for the most part was clutch throughout the season. i am just as pissed that our defense can’t stop a mobile QB. We couldn’t do it last year either and it looks bad for us again this year.
Spot on re: D issues with mobile QB. Even the lead footed Goff gave them fits in second game putting up 31 points after Niners had thrashed him earlier.
Murray led 2 drives of 70 yards plus down the field for TDs for AZ in 4th Q. Meanwhile, after scoring 10 points in first 5 minutes, SF scored 10 in last 55 minutes. G did have the ball last, got close but couldn’t quite finish.
Niners stats from last season are skewed due to excellent first half vs. mostly chump teams (Jameis W throwing 5 Ints yada yada) vs. second half, when comp was tougher and results not quite so good. Also think this got fanbase to be in denial about Saleh who I still don’t trust. Kinlaw at goal line saved them big time and exiled Seattle to the road while Niners got 2 teams easier for them to handle. Til they got someone who wasn’t.

I probably saw him live at Shea about 10 times.
I think he was about 4 for 38 when I was there…
Saw him at Shea once in ’65, when staying for a couple weeks at the Flushing “Y”. Saw him play vs. the Cards in St. Louis in ’64 and at Met Stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota in ’60 against the Giants former farm team, the Millers. Giants swapped Millers for the Seals to move to SF in ’58. Playing (and starring) for the Milers was YaZmaTaZ’ grandpa. BTW: That card might, hopefully, still be in my possession. Have quite a few of his cards as well as many Giants from over the years.
You guys are so lucky. My few memories of seeing Willie Mays was on the occasion that the Cards were playing the Giants (I grew-up in Oklahoma and they were the regional baseball team).
Yeah, seeing Mays, McCovey, Bonds, Marichal, Hart, Speier, and Fuentes all the time was a thrill I’ll never forget. Even if those damn bleachers where we sat most of the time were pretty far from Willie. Never got a home run ball running around between the stands and fence.
I’m sure a large percentage of the proceeds go to a worthy cause.

Giants flying home. Air not to improve in Seattle until Thursday or Friday. Games will be played Wednesday and Thursday at the Oracle. Seattle will be home team for both games.

They let Ronnie and Roger walk. And they won a bunch of Super Bowls. Great all time Niner though. He was just such a great player to watch Tough as they come. Best blocking RB hands down.

“Larry Yount (older brother of Robin) made his big league debut in a game that he never appeared in. Then he never played the majors again.
Drafted out of high school by Houston in 1968, Yount worked his way up the minor league ladder and received his call up to the parent club in September 1971, toward the end of his fourth season in pro ball. During that year, he had fanned 121 in 137 innings in Triple-A Oklahoma City, and the Astros wanted to see what he could do in the bigs. Uncle Sam, however, had first dibs and called on him to complete a week of military service, a common occurrence during the Vietnam War era. So after a week of no baseball at all, Yount finally ended up in the Houston bullpen. Maybe the layoff had an effect, and maybe not. It certainly did not help.
On Sept. 15, Yount’s opportunity came. With the host Astros trailing the Atlanta Braves 4-1 in the top of the ninth, Houston manager Harry “The Hat” Walker called Larry’s number. It was the perfect low-pressure situation to get a rookie’s feet wet. With two weeks left in the season, the Astros were hovering around .500, some 10 games out of the NL West race. Atlanta was also playing out the string. There was no save to blow, no pennant on the line. Only 6,513 fans attended the Wednesday night contest, and goodness knows how few were still in attendance when Yount got the nod.
As Larry warmed up in the bullpen, his elbow began to stiffen, but he buckled down and reported to the game, where he was announced as the next pitcher. He hoped the elbow would loosen up with a few more pitches. “You figure you’ll run out to the mound, that the adrenaline will be pumping and that you’ll figure out what’s wrong,” Yount recalled later. “I went to the mound, and took a couple of tosses.” The pain, however, got worse as he took his final warm-up pitches. Yount was smart and did not want to risk his career in his debut. He called in the trainer, who took him out. Both surely expected that Yount’s turn would come again soon.
It never did.”
