A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bay Bridge Series Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 18, 2020

This is really outstanding and a testament to how well this has been managed over the long haul. NBA and NFL, too. The three major sports are doing a great job with this.

We got a little problem with Yaz but I’m not that worried. Could it be time for The Grave Dugger to resume his digging?

Beating up on Seattle is fun but shit gets real again tonight.

I’m sure this lady is a good Giants fan but she’s just not operating at a The Flap level of consciousness.

Agree. All major sports have done well in managing their seasons with the pandemic. Soccer, too.

Yeah, was fun kicking the dog shit outta Seattle, but you’re right, shit gets real tonight. RE: the A’s, we lost two of three last time that should have been wins. So, let’s make-up for that today and this weekend.

We are in the 7 hole, one up on Philly. If the playoffs started today we would play the Cubs.

Cards are half a game back. Brew is 1 game back. Mets 1.5. Rox 2 games back.

That four game series against the Rox will be key. With our 1-5 record against the Friars, we need to make hay against the A’s and Rox.

    Go Giants!

    • Carstie Clausen said, on September 18, 2020 at 9:36 am

One from the Friar Tuckers, one from the A-Hos and three from the Rox = .500 baseball and seems, at 5 wins outta 11 games, to be doable.

  2. willedav said, on September 18, 2020 at 8:07 am

In fairness to Kap, Girardi isn’t doing any better when it comes to handling Phils pitching, especially pen. Looking at box last night, Mets shut down Phils after disastrous start for 7 innings and got comeback W highlighted by 2 run bomb from Cano in 9th.
Mets have 5 guys over .900 OPS in the lineup. Alonso hit his 12th HR last night but he isn’t even one of them. Cano is having fantastic season at plate, one of 4 guys hitting over .320.

So why are they where they are, couple games back of Giants and about 10 th best team in NL? I know Mac said something about fundamental screw ups, but still—these guys are hitting the ball really well and yet they’ve lost 3 more games than Giants.

  3. Lurker John said, on September 18, 2020 at 8:24 am

So, just the 10 games left, right? Pretty amazing that a team with little to no expectations coming into this abbreviated season are right in the thick of things with just a few games to go. Funny thing is, those two blown games to the A’s, and the one to the Angels, could well be the deciding factor. Think of where they’d be if they’d won the three games that are normally won 99% of the time. Freakish blown saves. They’d be 28-21 and sitting pretty.

They really need to have a good series against the A’s and also the Rockies to make up for those losses, and both teams give them all kinds of problems. Go Giants.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on September 18, 2020 at 9:39 am

It’s actually 11 games (one makeup with the Pads) left. The Rox give us all kindsa problems at the Box of Rox. Those losses to the A’s probably has the guys pretty worked up about it. Kapler has better sense of his bullies now, so the odds even up a bit.

Yaz to get an MRI this morning, hope it turns out ok where he might miss one are 2 games.
Otherwise a major blow going down the stretch without him.Your choices in the Chernobyl site are
GraveDuggar,Jaylin “Sammy” Davis”, Daniel “Boone” Robertson, are Chris eat at Shaw’s…

Right now it looks like it will be Luis “Wasabi”Basabe taking over as a backup in LF which I’m fine with the kid is blazing fast on a team with not much speed..

    • Carstie Clausen said, on September 18, 2020 at 9:42 am

Wasabi Baseball was highly regarded as a White Sux farmhand. He has power as well as speed. I lost track of just how the Z&Hers got him. Anybody recall the specifics?

Well, you allow enough teams into the postseason, you get this. Sure, it keeps interest up, but this is basketball-esqe with more than half the teams gotting in.

Hey, the owners get more games and rake in more coin, so all is well. Football is doing the same so what the hell? Just call it the 2nd season and let everyone in.

    • Flavor said, on September 18, 2020 at 8:54 am

what is the incentive to even win the division at this point?

      • Carstie Clausen said, on September 18, 2020 at 9:44 am

The division? Shirley, you jest. I get what you mean, but just chalk it up as one crazy CV19 season.

      • djloo27 said, on September 18, 2020 at 10:46 am

No incentive at all, far as I know…

      • unca_chuck said, on September 18, 2020 at 12:26 pm

Stix, this is the new format for the playoffs going forward. They have diluted the playoffs to a play-in tourney.

  6. unca_chuck said, on September 18, 2020 at 9:47 am

Right. Everyone has to go through a play-in 3 game series now. This is gonna get weird.

The NFL is doing the same thing. Except that only the top seed doesn’t have the extra playoff game.

    • alleykat69 said, on September 18, 2020 at 10:53 am

And the all important rest week which is critical in the playoffs. Also all roads go thru the top seed in the playoffs, a huge advantage as it turned out for the 49ers last year..

  7. alleykat69 said, on September 18, 2020 at 10:49 am

Stix..I believe Wasabi Basabe was designated for assignment by the Whitesox’s the Giants put in a claim and they worked out a deal for cash considerations.
Yeah this could end up being another nice dumpster dive for Z/Harris as Basabe obviously has talent , speed& power and being a switch hitter another bonus!

    • Carstie Clausen said, on September 18, 2020 at 11:03 am

Thanks, Kat. Yeah, watching a couple videos I was blown-away by the switch-hitter app. Seems the Chisox are so loaded with OF talent that they had no room for him. Thanks for that.

MLB site’s team by team analysis of each one’s most probable farmhand trade bait. For SF, it was Canario, rated as the third best of our OF prospects. Seems like a lot o teams have a surplus of OFers, middle infielders, in their systems. Not quite so many pitchers–starters particularly.

By ’22 SF should have talented outfielders emerging past the earlobes. Now may be a good time to do some anticipatory trading for hurlers with good upsides. Perhaps a choice should be made between Barrels and Wilmet, considering that the NL will probably stick with the DH. Neither of them can field worth a damn. Which one would you trade to a team hungry for more offensive help? The two Ohio teams might be fertile hunting-grounds.

      • djloo27 said, on September 18, 2020 at 11:16 am

        That hurt, Stix…

      • zumiee said, on September 18, 2020 at 11:27 am

That was a really weird situation for him. It was like “Hey guy, we’re trying real hard to trade you away, but go ahead and still play a great game for us tonight.” Teams always pull a player from the lineup in those situations. But the Mets gotta Met.

  8. willedav said, on September 18, 2020 at 11:35 am

The incentive for winning any of 3 division would be to get first round vs. weakest comp in the playoffs.
Dodgers will get 8 seed, then winner of 4-5 match up, yada yada thereby avoiding playing one of other top teams until championship finals.

Funny thing is, both NL and AL, 4 seed Padres and Yanks might be next best team and fully capable of knocking out top dog(s).

Speaking of Dogs, couple days ago the MLB site linked to on widget had story on Alou’s currently working in scouting. One of them, I think Moises son, is in fact working for the Dogs. Cool story, pic of Felipe in there too.

  9. alleykat69 said, on September 18, 2020 at 11:39 am

Damm Loo did u get Willmet to cry again?
But seriously I would keep Flores over Barrels.
Younger, more power, maybe a tad better defense.
Besides didn’t Flores sign a 2 year deal?
    And Barrels just this year?
Get what u can with a trade of Barrels,
Giants have plenty of DH candidates for next year, if the DH comes back which I think it will now..

    • willedav said, on September 18, 2020 at 12:06 pm

Kat, the best DH candidates would both be Flores and Solano, plus Dickerson. I’d keep all of them; giants are gonna have to continue to score a lot to cover the pitching as others have pointed out.
It will be interesting to see what rosters look like, how many team will be allowed to carry.
Also, if anyone can dislodge Flaco Dubon from CF. OF next year will be battleground. Maybe Slater can actually play it by ST, at least for a while.

      • willedav said, on September 18, 2020 at 12:09 pm

what I read from Hank in Chron today is, “He (Slater) probably will not play the field again this season with his injured elbow.”

  10. unca_chuck said, on September 18, 2020 at 12:30 pm

Anything can happen in a best of 3 play-in series. It really is a joke. Sure, it would help the Giants immensely if we play the Dodgers in the first round. Opie lays a turd, and we are one game closer.

This will eventually be expanded to a 5 game series. When the Yanks/Red Sox go down in the first round a couple times, they’ll change it.

  11. alleykat69 said, on September 18, 2020 at 1:32 pm

Yeah Willied with Barrels and Flores that’s a nice duo of DH’s along with Dickster from the left side.Contracts are cheap so why not?
I really believe the Giants made they’re push when Dubon took over CF.(Notice he’s out there every game now and batting close to .300)
For a guy that’s never been out there he has played pretty solid ball, and can cover
more ground then anyone else out there besides my whipping boy Jaylin Davis who they don’t like much in CF anyway..

  12. chipower9 said, on September 18, 2020 at 2:48 pm

Based on the MRI, Yaz has a mild calf strain, is day-to-day, and will not go on the injured list.

    https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/mike-yastrzemski-has-mild-calf-strain-wont-go-giants-injured-list

    • xoot said, on September 18, 2020 at 3:01 pm

mild is good news so is day to day but calf strain is pretty vague. i mean, there aren’t many elements in the calf–three muscles and one huge crucial tendon.

    • unca_chuck said, on September 18, 2020 at 3:11 pm

We all know how well that usually goes.

    1. Alex Dickerson (L) LF
    2. Donovan Solano (R) 2B
    3. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
    4. Wilmer Flores (R) DH
    5. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
    6. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
    7. Darin Ruf (R) RF
    8. Joey Bart (R) C
    9. Mauricio Dubon (R) CF
    P Logan Webb (R)

  15. willedav said, on September 18, 2020 at 3:14 pm

Lot of foul ground at O co. Also pen mounds on the field still.

    • xoot said, on September 18, 2020 at 4:20 pm

but those mounds are never a problem becz the foul ground is so vast. Sometimes the cheesy folding chairs in the bullpens are trouble.

  16. willedav said, on September 18, 2020 at 3:23 pm

Kat I don’t think Davis is out of the picture. In longer season without funky rules he’d be up and get another look. Depending on how many OFs they would keep next year/roster limits he’s still most athletic guy they have going into ST.

Chron had story on W wilson and a day in life in Sac. He gets to yard for a prepared meal starts baseball activities on field at 3:30 (Sac heat to be avoided). Does glove work IF/OF (couple hours +) and takes BP before intrasquad game. How long that one goes depends on how many pitchers are available. Take was that game had varied levels of comp.

Sounds lot like under- glorified ST, without facing other teams.

      • Carstie Clausen said, on September 18, 2020 at 5:32 pm

Those were the days, my friend.

Still hoping the Giants would get the idea of setting up a Mays-McCovey baseball academy in their home state of Alabama. Forget about the inner cities–even though the great Kirby Puckett came from Chicago.

Southern Black kids are still where it’s at. Give them a place to live, get an education and play baseball and practice fundamentals during their non-school hours and (if they close the site to “interested onlookers” scouts from other organizations) they might develop some talent along the lines of Mays, Aaron, Robinson and McCovey.

That opener by the A-Hos was on two guys, Webb for dithering around the batters–trying to pitch too fine, perhaps. He’s currently at 27 pitches, more than twice that of his opponent. Donnie Barrels with his fielders choice, is not my choice for second base. The

We need a Constitutional court to be comprised of nine “living national treasures” as they call them in Japan. No ABA lawyers would likely qualify. A court of wise elders of both sexes. Minimum age 65, as persons of that attainment of years are not much any more about empire building and nest-feathering. Term of six years. Period.

Get politics the hell outta the court system. While at it, abolish both political parties. Their national committees make all the decisions and they answer to higher powers who give them their marching orders. We happen to live in a plutocratic oligarchy, so these much needed reforms are about likely to happen as a Rhode Island red sprouting bicuspids.

Just a hunch. But Bart is ready to HR now. Or soon. He’s taking charge on the field, even if he’s still somewhat limited. It’s time.

Mt. Davis in centerfield is foreboding-looking with the dark tarp. What a strange sight.

Funky as it is it obviously doesn’t bother A’s to play there. Their proposed pipedream new stadium is so dumb. they are only tenants in the whole place–spruce it up in off season and stay there.

Ruf takes header out there. Giants could be down to OF of Davis Duggar and Ramos.

      Ruf landing.

Perfect numbers- that’s some serious esoteric math.
Remember learning trigonometry in high school. Why were we learning it?

  47. willedav said, on September 18, 2020 at 7:40 pm

you knew that was coming. A’s don’t hit for average, but…

  48. xoot said, on September 18, 2020 at 7:41 pm

Webb has no command. He sux. Our pitching is an adventure.

  49. Macdog said, on September 18, 2020 at 7:42 pm

    Mangled Webb.

    The A’s are annoying.

    Phillies get a sweep.

74 pitches and four runs in three IP. Who starts the bottom of the 4th? After that performance by his mound opponent,Oakland’s starter might be considering changing his front name to Grinnin.

i need more stuff like this in my life right now…..

  54. Carstie Clausen said, on September 18, 2020 at 7:58 pm

Why the off is Kapler hanging Webb out to dry? He should realize that his guy simply does not have it tonight.

    • xoot said, on September 18, 2020 at 8:15 pm

stretch him out. the pen needs some cover

  55. Macdog said, on September 18, 2020 at 7:59 pm

This could be another double-digit debacle.

  56. alleykat69 said, on September 18, 2020 at 8:17 pm

Kapler is notorious especially with Webb to keep watching him get hammered and just have this dumb expression like he will still get out of an inning after he gives up 5 are most consecutive hits which would tell me are any other flapper to PULL HIS SORRY ASS ALREADY!!!

  57. unca_chuck said, on September 18, 2020 at 9:31 pm

You can blame that on Tyler Anderson and he getting thrown out after 2 inning yesterday.

    • Macdog said, on September 18, 2020 at 9:37 pm

Does he get blamed for the 3 hits and 11 Ks by the hitters?

    • unca_chuck said, on September 18, 2020 at 9:44 pm

No, but the reason Mr. Kotter let the tangled Webb weave was because the starters have had a bunch of short stints lately. Anderson;s idiotic move to get tossed was stupidity at its highest level.

  58. Carstie Clausen said, on September 18, 2020 at 10:18 pm

Demoralizing when your starter simply doesn’t have it. Yes, I can understand the business with Anderson causing a stretch on the pen. Yet, when you consider that the bullies did not surrender a run and precious few baserunners, it makes one think about Kapler’s priorities.

Webb’s command has not consistently been awful, though we have yet to see premium outings from him. We get flashes of the talent. Looking long term, would it not have been wiser to shut him down after three and run out guys like Shaun Anderson and Suarez, both of whom have been starters and neither of whom had pitched recently? Both of em did fine tonight. No rust was evident.

My concern about Webb is that potentially he is quality. His tour through the pipeline buttresses that. Demoralization can work two ways and it did tonight…except for the relievers. K., like Webb, has a bit of a learning curve ahead.

Anyway, seeing those two runners on in the 4th and I tuned into You Tube and connected with “Live at Budokan by a certain guitar master named Clapton. Some standards, some classics, some bluuz riffs. Sure beat the sure nuff masochism of the team’s first full-fledged 9 inning shutout of the season.

I’d like to think we are in good shape but am i the only one seeing a potential 0/7 against the A’s and Pads?? I really hope i am wrong but we can end up 0/13 aginst these guys in September! Shit!!
