A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

20 Innings, No Runs

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 20, 2020

This is probably the biggest game of the year. Not just for our playoff chances. If we zero-out again in completely pants-down bent over the couch fashion it really will be more of a blessing in the long run. Who wants to watch this team get embarrassed by LA in the first round? We have no chance of being competitive in the post season playing like we have been playing lately against good teams.

What? Over? Did you say it’s over?
Nothing is over until we decide it’s over!
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
    Hell No!!

Ha good one Kat! Funny, Chron other day had the cool calm collected vets (read BC) led by Crawford as the ones leading by example and mentioned playoff experience of all of them including Longo from Tampa days…in other words polar opposite of the Rev. At some point in near future the BC, which could be read as Bochy Crew too, will get turned over under Kap and someone else takes leadership role.

Gausman deserved better fate than the L yesterday. Watching baserunning and D yesterday Giants have to be all in on DH next season as they have that position filled to overflowing.

Ran into Raider fan (always interesting breed) I hadn’t seen in a while yesterday. Told me he thought they were going all the way/Niners had shot their wad last year. Nice kid, I just laughed. Did agree Jacobs is awesome, not as sold on their D as he is. Hope these next 2 aren’t trap games where Niners think they walk in/walk out with auto W vs. weaker opponent. Still have to score points, make plays/tackles and stop people.

It’s games like these that show what the teams are made of. If we can play decent football with our backups then that should give the team a spark.

  3. Bozo said, on September 20, 2020 at 8:06 am

On the other hand you could also say –
Good fun = getting into the playoffs,
great fun = playing the Dodgers,
Awsome fun = beating the Dodgers,
Icing on the cake fun = anything after beating LA ,and
James has to replace all his furniture fun = winning the whole damn thing.

  4. djloo27 said, on September 20, 2020 at 8:20 am

I think the Giants could make play-off history.
Kershaw and Buehler could no-hit them back to back…

  5. alleykat69 said, on September 20, 2020 at 8:22 am

    Damm right Bozo!!
Anyway of knocking off the Dodgers, I’m all in!!
Why the credit so much for that freakin team?
As usual the Giants played them tough, what was the final tally 6-4 Bums
which easily could of been 5-5 are better.
With no fans it’s a better crapshoot in a short series for a visiting team imo.
Besides I need to know that Rooster 🐔 will eat more crow, especially if it’s the Giants and fellow Flappers
plucking their feathers off for another year of oooh 😯 best team that NEVER WINS THE ULTIMATE W/S CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Memo to Giants… WTF u have Dickerson,Yaz and Slater ( who can’t play the Outfield just DH) and your starting RUF in the outfield?? When your best outfielder with speed and power that would be your best option in my boy Jaylin Davis lingers in Stalig 17 is just totally STUPID!!! 12AB’s all year with a bomb, .167 avg still compared to the GraveDuggar at a stellar .107 is a joke. And yet he will be called up again next Geez 😒

One good thing about not working is to be able to listen to as much music as you want. Jazz station go to has been raising money lately and are currently in weekend of Coltrane focus. He put amazing amount of great music in different combinations of groups–lyrical melodies like Naima Lonnies Lament Alabama to busier more inventive Giant Steps Impressions Miles Mode Afro blue in addition to various combos (Monk Rollins Cannon Miles etc) of which he took part.
Left us all too soon at age 40; would have turned 96 coming Wed.

    • Bozo said, on September 20, 2020 at 9:04 am

I was just listening to Alabama a few days ago.

      • willedav said, on September 20, 2020 at 9:40 am

Beautiful tune, very powerful. Used to have 3 record set of Impulse stuff. There’s also a live version on that Jazz Casual set he did here with Ralph Gleason.

Anybody else notice that in Yaz’ absence the team has totally lost its mataZ? It’s like you let all the air outta its tires. Sometimes one player can spark a whole team, even if he’s not doing extremely well at the time. Yes, they might still have lost those two, but their first full 9 inning shutouts?

  9. Flavor said, on September 20, 2020 at 8:59 am

the only thing that could save this season is to bring up The Grave Duggar. Even if he just sits on the bench and quietly offers encouragement with his rad nickname.

    • alleykat69 said, on September 20, 2020 at 9:18 am

Duggar has had more then enough chances to prove he still stinks.
Open up the coffin ⚰️ nail it shut with the GraveDuggar in it and pour in the dirt…

Yaz’ career totals at the moment add up to one helluva good year:

    https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/yastrmi01.shtml

Him and gramps are climbing the father & son combined HR list at 482.
The top combo seems obvious, but I wouldn’t make a big bet on it.
    Haven’t looked it up yet…

  11. mrsprtdude said, on September 20, 2020 at 9:20 am

I agree Craig. Biggest game of the year.

SF Reds Brewers all 1 game under fighting for 1 spot. In 2 days we went from sole 7th to tie for 8th. 9 games left. 6-3 gets us in for sure. 5-4 likely does. A win today means we can split the Rockie pads games. Doable. A loss today and we must go 5-3 in the last 8 for a chance. Not likely. A bad time for our best player to get hurt:(

  12. willedav said, on September 20, 2020 at 9:43 am

Cueto/Tromp today, right? He and Gausman get one more start, time to show mettle and hold down A’s til bats get going…which hopefully is soon.

That is not the outfield of a playoff team – maybe not even a major league team…

      • Bozo said, on September 20, 2020 at 1:10 pm

        Yep, rougher than Ruf.

Nice drive by G. Gore nice run up middle, still going strong.

  18. willedav said, on September 20, 2020 at 11:02 am

Dumb call by Gase. Take the points they are going to need them–this could be game of attrition with all the injuries.. Niners had just stuffed your running game on short yardage and then you try it again.

  19. unca_chuck said, on September 20, 2020 at 11:17 am

I thought Gase was gonna be a good coach. He isn’t.

The state of pro football in NY is at rock bottom.
    Not my problem!

When I watched the annoying Patrick Beverly of Clippers do continuous stupid shit, made me think of Randy Beverly and his 2 picks that helped Namath so much. Johnny Sample had one too, cool player. Read his book at time Confessions of Dirty Ballplayer—outspoken and didn’t hold back vs. coaches that screwed him over.

Larry Wilson HOF safety died, #8 of old STL Cards. Always liked them in that era, wide open offenses cool uni and helmet.
Coryell did cool things over there.

    • unca_chuck said, on September 20, 2020 at 12:53 pm

Coryell should be in the HOF. His work in SD was ground-breaking.

Anderson T. going today. Cueto hasn’t pitched since last sunday–guess Kapler saving for one of SD games if he goes tomorrow.

  28. mrsprtdude said, on September 20, 2020 at 2:31 pm

Worst injury day in Niner history? Fair to say at one point there 6 most important playeras all hurt. Insane!

I think they should give the bay bridge trophy to Crawford for that HR. His kids might enjoy playing with it for the next year.

Another example of bad baserunnning Also dubon. Didn’t matter in this game but ball got away from 1b and he should have been at 2nd. Scored anyway but still.

    HUGE WIN!!!

  38. Carstie Clausen said, on September 20, 2020 at 5:01 pm

If the opponent’s starter isn’t top-notch or thereabouts, watch out for the Giants. Nice to see Basabe get his first MLB RBI. Also good to see Peralta lowering his ERA a shade or two under 4.00. He may be a keeper. Will Moronta be ready for that last eight–particularly vs. the no longer terribly motivated Pads.

  39. willedav said, on September 20, 2020 at 5:09 pm

Stix, I’ll quote from what I read. You can read these too, @extrabaggs on twitter. I’m not on there I just read stuff, mostly from Giants beat writers like Baggarly Schulman and Pavlovic.

First one referenced Tromp catching tomorrow too with Cueto on mound. Baggs tweeted, “Gabe Kapler is planning a ‘mental refresh’ for Joey Bart.”

Other ones referenced “some real talk” with Kapler in The Athletic. Here’s the direct quote from Kapler on the Baggs tweet about Bart and his struggles 2 BBs/30 Ks: “He’s getting it handed to him. He knows that. He’s ready to adjust.”

  40. willedav said, on September 20, 2020 at 5:10 pm

Niners unhappy with new turf at MetLife. Not thrilled about having to play there again next week too.
bosa apparently out for season with ACL, Thomas might not be that bad. G has high ankle sprain.

  41. alleykat69 said, on September 20, 2020 at 5:19 pm

Yeah and they get to play on that same shit field next week.im sure it will be Mullens and Beat-hard.Hopfull they get a big enough lead to pull Mullens and let Beat-hard take the punishment..

Takes awhile to break in a new turf, takes even longer to fix injured players! A disgrace to the league having these teams play on a field not up to standards..

  42. Macdog said, on September 20, 2020 at 5:54 pm

I didn’t hear the Steelers whining about the turf last week.

    • unca_chuck said, on September 20, 2020 at 5:57 pm

Talk to the Jets. They lost 5 players to injury as well. It is fucking asinine to be playing on fake grass in an outdoor stadium. If they can play on grass in Green Bay they can play on grass in New fucking Jersey.

      • Macdog said, on September 20, 2020 at 6:26 pm

Talk to Saquon Barkley. He injured his knee on Chicago’s grass field and is probably out for the season.

      • unca_chuck said, on September 20, 2020 at 6:51 pm

10 injuries at least in the Niners Jets game.

  43. unca_chuck said, on September 20, 2020 at 5:57 pm

Mac, yeah, I’ve been to Coppola’s Rutherford winery, which used to be Inglenook. Awesome old ivy-covered building out front that was on every gallon jug of $5.00 Mountain Nectar I ever bought in high school.

  44. Macdog said, on September 20, 2020 at 6:59 pm

Coppola’s winery is a nice visit. He also had a storefront at some point in the city, on Columbus or Kearney, between North Beach and the Financial District. Served food and all of his wines. Not cheap but a good date place, if I remember correctly. Back when I was actually dating… and had money….

1st year of highschool, I was starting 2nd baseman for the freshman team (Bridgewater West, NJ). One guy, Nicky Krochta, sucked as an overall player, but he could throw a knuckler, so the coach let him pitch every now and then, and he nearly always shut down the other team. When we’d do batting practices, I was the only one who could hit his pitches, and hit them well, not sure why. Maybe the many hours of whiffle ball in the driveway growing up in the ‘hood …..

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on September 20, 2020 at 9:33 pm

Odd thing about the friends one might have had as a child compared to those one had in high school. Some were the same, but mostly different for me. The last high school reunion I went to was the 20th (which was already more than 20 years ago). The people I found most interesting to talk to at that reunion were kids I hung out with in grade school. Other than a few very good friends from high school that I’m still friends with, most of my high school *friends* were very dull 20 years later… or else felons and drug addicts. One guy who was one of my best friends senior year is now in jail for life after mowing down some pedestrians on a sidewalk. Another recently died of liver and throat cancer. Another just died from meth. Sheesh….

  50. willedav said, on September 21, 2020 at 7:13 am

Paul that’s funny. my 50th reunion was last year. Old friend is on alumni committee and sent out a list but none of my basketball buddies were on it so i passed. I did go to the 25th one at request of a lady I knew from Little League who had old bffs going and her husband wasn’t interested. A lady who was also on committee talked to me and I think rigged a raffle prize for me.

Couple weeks ago out of the blue same lady who was quite attractive at the 25th, sent friend request on FB. I accepted and then her posts started flowing in—from completely opposite political views of my own. I sent a few scathing rebukes of same in comments, which from now on I’ll just ignore, but I do wonder if she read them and thought what’s wrong with this guy.

    • unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2020 at 11:14 am

Yeah, most of my close friends are friends I made in early grade school. And yeah, I was in jail for my 10th so I missed that, but I did go to my 25th and it was funny. I was a long-haired hippie type for my whole HS career, and absolutely no one recognized me at the reunion.

  51. willedav said, on September 21, 2020 at 7:17 am

The Niner player I saw complaining about the turf was Arik Armstead in postgame news conference. Lemme see if anything he said is online somewhere.

  52. willedav said, on September 21, 2020 at 7:56 am

Shanahan, from USA Today story: “Our players talked about it the entire game, just how sticky the turf was.”
Also, “It was something our guys were concerned about right away.” League field ops dept apparently looking into the field, per Mike Florio. Shanahan did say it wasn’t only his guys either, but I did see quote from Jets player who said they were too busy getting their butts kicked to notice it.

Are you fucking with me Loo? I think you are cuz I’ve mentioned at least that Burkett Fun Fact many times on here. Yes, I knew all that. Paul Warfield too.

School is going pretty well. I live right by my school so I still come in to my office every day and pretty much do my usual thing–though it is a lot more quiet around here. It looks like we are going to move to a hybrid model starting October 12, so that will be interesting to see how that plays out.

So, these next two series (eight games) are key. Well, in a 60 game shortened and bastardized season they’re all key, but at this point, these games are especially key.

Question – given that the Friars have punched their postseason ticket, do they take their foot off the pedal at all, and try to rest some players for the playoffs?

Giants have to make hay against the Rox. I think they need to go at least 3-1 in the series.

  56. chipower9 said, on September 21, 2020 at 10:44 am

So, our boys are in a three-way tie for the 8th spot with the Brewers and Cincy. First tie-break is intra-division. We are 15-17 in our division. All the more reason that Giants must make hay against the Rox and Padres (uh yeah, right). I have no idea where the Brew or Cincy stand on division W/L. Just win, baby.

  57. unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2020 at 11:16 am

I’m glad we get SD when they are signed, sealed, and in the playoffs. We need to take 3 of 4 in both these series at the least to have a shot. There are just too many teams around us who will gladly jump us.

    • chipower9 said, on September 21, 2020 at 11:22 am

With division records the first tie-break, we definitely need to have good series this week. Even with the Friars in, taking three of four will be a tall order. One day at a time…just win.

  58. Macdog said, on September 21, 2020 at 11:55 am

Pads clinched a playoff berth yesterday, but they still haven’t clinched second place. Their magic number is 1. Hey, as long as it’s a possibility, we can dream.

Remaining skeds along with division records in parens:

    Marlins 28-25 (20-16): 4 at Braves, 3 at Yanks.
    Phillies 27-26 (20-16): 4 at Nats (including a DH), 3 at Rays.
    Cards 26-24 (19-16): 3 at Royals, 5 vs. Brewers (including home/away DH).
    Reds 27-27 (19-18): 3 vs. Brewers, 3 at Twins.
    Brewers 26-26 (16-16): 3 at Reds, 5 at Cards (including home/away DH).

The Cardinals also have two games left with the Tigers. From MLB.com: Even if St. Louis is still in contention after the final eight regular-season games, it may have to play a makeup doubleheader against the Tigers if it settles a playoff berth.

Shit. We have a dreaded double header on Friday. Didn’t realize the Rockies fell so far.

    Reading Baseball-Reference again, Loo?

Wait, how do you sort by birthdays? nvrmnd found it

4/25 is a pretty lame baseball birthday. Only one of note is Tony Phillips of the A’s and a bunch of teams. Born 2 years before me.

I’m just like that. Except with PornHub.

      I kid, I kid.

Loo that was impressive list for Nov 28. Weiss played for long time after breaking in with A’s including of course 1989. When he managed the Rox, K and K used to rag on him for walking so slow on every trip to the mound.

Ken Howell was pretty effective to for Dogs. Died couple years ago at 57; alum of Tuskegee Inst. HBC.
Purnal Goldy didn’t last long but I did have his baseball card. Not a name you would forget.
Westrum long time Giant, playing days and coaching.
    and yeah 12:48 totally agree

MLBTR story quotes from one on MLB.com that Arenado had tests done on ailing shoulder, didn’t play Sunday and Rox awaiting word on results. Both intimated he could be done for this year.
Not to wish such a good player ill, but…

They are out of the playoffs so there’s really no reason to rush him back.

Just read a piece in the Atlantic. Reds currently have us in the tie-breaker. They are 19-18 against their Central foes. We are 15-17. I am unsure of the Brewer’s division record.

Again…got to make hay against the Rox and Friars. Reds next have three against the Brewcrew, and then three against the Twins.

Brewers have the three against Cincy next, then five against the Cards (including a DH on Friday).

It is going to be an WILD week in regards to those two wild card spots.
