A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Exciting Slate of Games in The Books

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 1, 2020

Yesterday was just a fun day of games. Cleveland lost and that’s always delicious. Minnesota was eliminated with their still impossible to believe 18th(!) post season loss in a row. That A’s won and that’s fine with me, I hate Cleveland and LA way more than Oakland. And look what happened in San Diego. Oh my. Now facing elimination with the grizzled, revitalized Waino on the mound? This has gotten VERY interest VERY quickly for one of the favorites……

all things Cleveland… l liked the hat, red with blue C in middle and red brim, not so much the red jersey. didn’t care for Reds jersey with large “Reds” letters in front. How could team like Cincy not score in 13 innings at bandbox ATL yard?

Julio Franco spent 8 years with Tribe. One of the funniest B/R page look ups ever, he played over 20 years. Didn’t join Braves til he was 42. Career slash line—.298/.365/.417 for .782 OPS not bad for middle IF most of career.
Went to HS San Pedro de Macoris in DR and if I’m not mistaken shares b-day with our own AK Aug 23 and is still alive in his early 60s. Tribe probably could have used him last night.

Hatin’ on Cleveland? I haven’t spent that much time there but had a great time playing at the Beachland ballroom. Didn’t see a game while in town, but we did pass the yard and I wouldn’t mind checking out a game there some day.

You know twice late game Tatis Jr. came up with 2 runners on and couldn’t deliver. First time he swung and missed at slider down and way off the plate and struck out, second time harmless ground ball iirc. Other than couple bombs he didn’t do much vs. Giants either. Seems undisciplined hitter inclined to swing at pitches he really can’t do much with, way too often. See if he can do more to help them today vs. old man Waino.

  4. willedav said, on October 1, 2020 at 7:19 am

One of the interesting things in playoffs is that teams haven’t seen opposing pitchers much from other divisions in while.
well, not so for Cards who faced Zach Davies 4 times last 2 seasons while he was with Brewers. 2019 he didn’t pitch badly, giving up 4 runs in total of 9 2/3 innings but lost both games.
Year before that they pounded him twice early in season, so he’s at least 0-4 against them in last few starts.

my dislike of Cleveland centers around the multiple battles with the Cavs and the Dubs and how exposed Cleveland fans became during that time as being complete and total idiots.

I am kind of the opposite. If I wasn’t a Giants fan Cleveland would be my team. Going up against monoliths like Boston and NY year after year I just grew a soft spot for em. I do think they make a few to many bad pitching decisions though. I know most of those were financial decisions but you gotta find a way to keep solid pitching.

  8. Winder said, on October 1, 2020 at 8:03 am

Hey Flavor= just got a post eaten and didn’t even use bad language.

Yes, some interesting ball. I guess I can understand your disdain for the Tribe Flav. There is the fan aspect you mention, but they are playing the Yankmees, and they yanks are right there with the bums on my most-hated list. To use a Star Wars analogy, the Yankmees are the “Dark Side.” So, there are few instances I can imagine where I would pull for the Yankmees over another team.

No surprise with Tampa sweeping the Jays. Tampa has a stacked team, and I like their manager. With that said, I predicted the Sox to represent the Jr Circuit in the World Serious.

Houston? Fuck them and all of their cheating. I was bummed to see their sorry asses advance. Fuck them. Wait, I already said Fuck them. Well, they say Three is a Charm…so Fuck them a third time.

Orange sun here in Oakland this a.m. AQI near 100 but it could worsen. Nearly as bad in LA. I have no favorites this year and really only dislike the bums. The live mic on turner last night while he was playing 3B and the pitcher was starting his windup sort of pissed me off. I hate espn’s gimmicks.

    • chipower9 said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:20 am

Yeah, 103 here, and supposed to clear a bit later in the day, but 150-200 forecasted for tomorrow and Saturday (unhealthy).

We had another orange sun yesterday afternoon/evening here in Oregon also. there was no wind.

Zaidi on MLBTR coverage, wants to re-up both Gausman and Smyly. Good with me. Give a two year contract to Gausman and a well-loaded one-year to
Smyly with a mutual, performance-based option (due to long history of injuries). Anderson has crawled outta seemingly nowhere (the Box of Rox) to turn in some decent performances. With some adjustments, particularly the nibbling habit, Webb could come around to a steady flow. What’s to say about Cueto? Hopefully, his blowouts were related to his hip problem and it can be solved. Giants need to bust the bank on Bauer on a two, maybe three year contract. It would not hurt to have at least one extra starter in the pool, useable as a longman.

  13. Flavor said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:12 am

this morning Kap was on KNBR saying he had just spoken with Posey at length about the year and what next year would look like. The FIRST thing Kap said was that Posey told him what a great job the coaches did with installing the new hitting approach. Kap is really pushing this hard, eh?

    • Carstie Clausen said, on October 1, 2020 at 10:03 am

Sorta like “something in the water”—the hitting coaches are the only logical explanation for that amazing uptick at the plate. If the crick don’t rise and the dam doesn’t fail, Posey returns next season. If its a full year run, a decision will need to be made regarding Bart. Would he gain more for a half-year or so starting out at Sactown, or would hand’s on tutelage by Buster, with each of them sharing the catching and vs, LHPs at first base be the better option?

The unspoken notion likely in Buster’s mind is whether he could have made the difference between working with the pitchers, particularly young guys like Webb, and in the batter’s box, to have brought in the two or three extra wins which would have made SF a playoff entity. He has a lot of incentives for a return in ’21. Give that leader of the team an ace and a pair of solid right-handed relievers to work with and the Giants could be a 90 game winner next season.

  14. sandog said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:30 am

I wonder if Buster regrets sitting out? I bet he does. I thought he made a great choice, as I expected us to be awful and I also thought the season would get cancelled early on. It had to hurt for him to see us miss the playoffs by one spot and for catching to be such a weak position for us.

The Indians were the number 1 team I was rooting for, so I am bummed they are out. I’m impressed the Marlins got in and have already won a game. I’ve said it before, but I think Jeter knows what he is doing over there. Padres I have mixed feelings. I kind of want to root for them as a local and I so dig the brown the uniforms, but man I catch a lot of crap from their fans and that makes it hard.
And yes, that Twins streak is mind boggling. I feel for their fans.

    • Flavor said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:39 am

Buster has to regret sitting out. Two things can be true tho. He probably doesn’t regret the decision at all. Just not being able to be part of the run.

      • chipower9 said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:56 am

Agree. I suspects that he is bummed that he missed out on being a part of the team.

But I doubt that he regrets the decision. He is a family man, has two kids with his wife, and adopted young twins. All of his logic and reasoning on why he would not play made absolute sense to me, so I doubt there are any regrets on not playing.

  15. Flavor said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:40 am

Fernando Tatis is my favorite non-Giant player so part of me is rooting a little for the Pads But grizzled revitalized Waino will be tough. That dude lives for shit like today….

Make it a triple for me. What “moneyball” really means is that the YankMes and the LaBumbos have so many shekels behind them that they can buy up all the best talent and reign supreme. That is a true definition of moneyball, not baseball.

Gott a third cousin name of Matt Olson. Last time I saw him was when he was 18 or so. At that time he was topping out at 6’7 to 6’8 and weighing in at maybe 265. Don’t know whether he’s grown more since ’99. Must be something in the name.

  33. gianthead said, on October 1, 2020 at 1:29 pm

As many of you recall I had been promoting pursuing Ozuna for the last 4 years. His stats for this year over a full 162 gane season would have had in the ballpark of 45 homers and 140 rbis…tremendous year. Given Atlanta is definitely more hitter friendly maybe the way the park played this year will shake up some thinking among free agent hitters.

He is a free agent again. I was hoping they would have at least approached him this past off-season. Now Atlanta only has Freeman Freemans r one more year and he is the heart of their team and fan fav so they will dedicate money to extend him and will need a big contract to eventually keep Acuna but Atl has only $60 mill committed to payroll next year so will they spend on Ozuna???

  34. Bozo said, on October 1, 2020 at 2:07 pm

Killing me Bozo! I heard Flem was doing the game, so I went ahead and recorded it for that reason!
In a related matter, Smashmouth going after me on Twitter today for criticizing Kuiper. And I went EASY on Kuip compared to my usual rant about how much he sux.

      • xoot said, on October 1, 2020 at 3:24 pm

You need to locate an audio clip of kuip repeatedly touting the Peanuts bobble head during the game a few years back. Even beat writers were imploring him on twitter, during the game, to realize that he could not enunciate the t in that word. Just send audio of that incompetent performance to any of his defenders.

      • Flavor said, on October 1, 2020 at 4:26 pm

  36. willedav said, on October 1, 2020 at 2:23 pm

what a heimlich by Sox pen guys. 4 walks in same inning, A’s take 4-3 lead. After a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs they intentionally walk a guy then walk 2 more to force in 2 runs. ridiculous. Pitcher only threw 2 strikes 8 balls to 2 hitters.

  37. willedav said, on October 1, 2020 at 2:30 pm

I’m enjoying this PS. But I really believe mlb needs to acknowledge its oddity. The ultimate winner should not be the WS champion but the 2020 champion. And the trophy should be truncated too. You know how an executive chef’s toque stands up like the WS trophy, a tall cylinder cut at the top at an angle, on the bias? Well, this year’s trophy can be similar but shorter. Like a lower, an assistant’s or a sous chef’s toque. About two thirds shorter.

    • Flavor said, on October 1, 2020 at 7:21 pm

your use of the word *political* shook me to my core but now that I’ve weathered that storm I think I’m ready for more. Some grass roots shit. Oh man I’ve never felt so alive!!!!!!!!

I’m more mellow I guess. Will and flow. But when the light turns green, put your foot on the gasoline.

Pads aren’t some 2018 Giants team. These fuckers can hit. Game on

Good for you Flavor, I will eat some humble pie 🥧
I never expected the Maxi Pads to come back! Still not over but nice comeback!

How’s this. Today after the bs espn hot mic with a’s CF Lureano possibly contributed to him overthrowing the cutoff man and enabling a run to score later that inning, Dave Flemming had to make a statement of apology on air– surely because the various lines were blowing up. The great thing about grass roots is that they rely on a billion individual seeds. If a tweet or two shits a seed or two, wtf?

Nice rip Tatis! We got a game.

I got your LOB right here! Way to comeback, bat flip and all.

Wish we could get some of that rain Jersey is getting at Jets field. Air quality here is at 160.

Dirt, loved your 5:11 with the video of Ruth “calling his shot”. Just found this on MLB, a recorded radio interview with Lou Gehrig, confirming that Ruth called his shot. Love hearing his NY accent. As a kid, I read a couple books about Gehrig. Don’t know why, but he became my favorite old-timer. Fun to hear this. Sorry, don’t know how to do the tiny url thing.

0-4 with next 5–Cardinals Chargers Bills Chiefs Patriots.
Broncos get W behind 3rd stringer QB Brettt Rypien.

Anyone here rooting for pads to lose? I am. I like Tatis ( love the bat flips. piss off old timers!) but machado is a shit, and we don’t want pads being good.
PS tatis dad has an unbreakable MLB record. No cheating. Any guesses?

      Is it the grand slams?

  65. Macdog said, on October 1, 2020 at 8:47 pm

Jim Druckenmiller reference just now near end of Jets-Broncos.

  66. mrsprtdude said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:21 pm

Yes! 2 grand slams in the same inning, incredibly, both against the same pitcher. For sure giving up 2 grand slams in the same inning will live forever. Guess who?

    • Macdog said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:23 pm

Ha, I saw it shown during Braves-Reds game today, it was against the Dodgers, now I can’t remember the pitcher.

Announcers are jizzing all over Kershaw for shutting out a sub-.500 team in an expanded playoff.

  68. mrsprtdude said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:21 pm

    Kershaw coming through tonight.

But post season not over yet. his time will come

For the east coast guys, what your take on Adam Gase?
He seems like an imbecile who has totally lost this team 6 personal fouls tonight granted probably cause he has a bounty hunter DC in ass hole Gregg Williams, but Gase is done in NY imo as should be Williams.Starting out 0-4 2 years in a row 1-11 at the start 3 years in a row just ain’t gonna cut it especially in NY I would think?

    • Macdog said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:42 pm

I can’t imagine he’ll make it through the season.

  71. xoot said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:38 pm

This half ass season is perfect for Kershaw. He’s strong now, the usual wear hasn’t taken its toll. His WS mvp trophy will be well deserved but it should be two thirds smaller than the std trophy.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:55 pm

I think Trump won the std trophy in the 70s.

    Derp! Urias picked off. Dumbfuck.

  73. Macdog said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:41 pm

Brew’s Urias picked off first down 3-0 in the 8th.

  74. unca_chuck said, on October 1, 2020 at 9:55 pm

Gase was the next hot coach that the 49ers nearly signed, but when Gase was told Fangio had to stay as his DC, he bailed, and we went with Jim (the fartiste) Tomsula. He did nothing in Miami, and isn’t doing much with the Jets. Granted, both those teams are flaming trainwrecks heading toward each other, but Gase looks lost.

Funny thing is, Fangio just beat him tonight. Not that he’s doing shit in Denver.

Meanwhile Tomsula is D line coach for the Cowboys and has revived the career of Aldon Smith, who now leads the league in sacks.
