Bungled Coaching Decision

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 5, 2020

Honestly, I was ok with how the Niner game was unfolding and I didn’t even get mad at those 2 absurd picks Mullens threw. He is the back up QB. That’s how those dudes roll sometimes.

My issue with the game last night was with the coach. What in the actual fuck was he doing kicking an onside kick at the end of the game with 2:02 left and 2 time outs? The onside kick used to be a play with the potential for to be one of the most exciting plays of the game. But the NFL rules committee ruined it by disallowing the unbalanced line as well as not letting players get a running head start. After the rule change the success rate dropped from 21% to 6%. That was going into this season I don’t know how many onside kicks have been recovered this year. I am going to guess NONE.

So instead of kicking the ball through the endzone, playing defense and forcing Philly to kick it to you around your 30 with a chance for a runback, Shanny decides to not only try an onside kick but he does it with that ridiculous drop the ball on the ground and then kick it attempt. Of course, it had no chance and at that point we were nearly guaranteed to be pinned inside the 10 which is what ended up happening.

A game we should have won. My expectations for Mully were low. My expectations for Shanny were much much higher…..

right after the Preakness ended I mentioned how much the stretch run reminded me of the epic 1989 Sunday Silence/Easy Goer battle. This dude put together an incredible tweet, check it out. My only quibble with Saturday’s call is that Larry Colmus pussed out and called it a photo finish. It was quite obvious the fill won it he should have given her that call. She ran a race of a life and deserved that call on the wire.

Agree with you about Colmus not calling the obvious winner. Imbriale is like that here, too.
Colmus must’ve really blown some big-time if he’s gotten that gun shy. This is the same guy who had the balls to call MMM the winner over WTC in the 2013 BC Classic IIRC and that was literally a fuckin’ whisker…

Agree with you on all points, Flav. Also, when the Niners did call their first time out with about 1:30 left, they did so after about 8-10 seconds ticked-off the clock. Poor clock management.

And that missed two-point conversion was huge. Convert that and your talking a FG to tie.

AL starts today. Go A’s. Go Rays!

Mullens missed wide open receivers from get go, including first 2 passes second of which would have been long gainer. He missed wide open pass on play before he got hit and fumbled.
Overall though Philly D was step ahead of Shanahan all night. They shut off most of the running game and other than Kittle passing game wasn’t doing much. There were many plays where they had it figured out right away and stuffed runs for losses.

and to allow freaking Carson Wentz to shred you for TD drive he finished off himself running untouched into end zone, is very bad look. Philly is terrible and beat up almost as badly as SF.

The only successful onside kick this season has been that stupid Atlanta Cowboys one where the dumbfuck Falcons did not know you are supposed to try and recover the kick at any point!!!

Onside kicks with these rules should only be done in absolutely desperate moments of a game or when completely unexpected. Niners were not in a desperate moment and could have kicked the ball to the end zone and not used the clock. I also thought it was stupid clock management to what throw 5 straight passes to the middle of the field with no timeouts??? You got to stick a couple to the sidelines.

Only benefit is about 10% of the death pool I am in took the Niners…I survived with the Bucs.

SB Nation column on Eagle talks about all the no names, such was wideout who caught the TD pass, back up linemen who helped protect Wentz and the DB who admitted Mullens threw the ball right to him for the pick 6.
Also says this about D: “Jim Schwartz defense has now been on winning side of six of last seven meetings against Shanny’s offense.”

Niners rush stats will look good, but most of it was based on 3 TE /wideout sweeps by Kittle Samuel and Aiyuk that accounted for over 60 yards. McKinnon had one good run for 15 yds., otherwise 13 carries for 39 total. Takeaway from outsiders is Shanahan didn’t run ball often enough, and waited way too long to ditch Mullens (who was bad immediately and shaky most of the night when he wasn’t connecting with Kittle) for Beathard. Bottom line Eagles D line dominated Niners O line that knew they had to protect Mullens, and that wasn’t area Niners had most of their injuries.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 5, 2020 at 8:27 am

And of course since those plays were successful, we stopped running them.

As a b-ball coach, the toughest games for me to coach were the one where I knew going in we were much the better team. Seemed like my teams would often get off to crummy start, missing easy looks and making other mistakes. Usually defense would come through, we’d shut the other team down and eventually our talented players would take things over.

That’s what I was waiting for last night for Niners, and Kittle did take over. Still wasn’t enough to overcome all the other mistakes and poor play, but surprised both lines got outplayed. Losing games to guys like Wentz with back up line and receivers should not happen. Getting blitzed by that easy 2 point conversion made hella difference too.

  7. unca_chuck said, on October 5, 2020 at 7:56 am

Yeah, the team looked unfocussed and not ready for prime time. The O line play is a real problem.

    • Flavor said, on October 5, 2020 at 8:18 am

i just read your thread at ninersforever.com it seems we are in agreement

    • unca_chuck said, on October 5, 2020 at 8:28 am

Yeah, Shanny wears that despite Mullens shitting the bed.

  8. unca_chuck said, on October 5, 2020 at 8:30 am

You could even say Shanny should have pulled Mullens earlier, but that’s a tough call.

    • Flavor said, on October 5, 2020 at 9:50 am

agreed. But after the second pick it was an easy call. He played so well vs NY I don’t fault Shanny for waiting for that Mullens to show up last night. He just never did.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 5, 2020 at 9:54 am

Right. I’ve heard a lot of talk that Shanny should have pulled Mullens earlier, but that’s all hindsight. I did tell my son I didn’t have a good feeling once Philly took the lead. I didn’t expect the gift-wrapped pick 6 though.

I was furious about the onsides kick though. That, and the Beater not simply walking in on the 2 pt conversion after the late TD. That would have made it a 3 point game.

      • alleykat69 said, on October 5, 2020 at 10:47 am

Yeah Beater had an easy walk-in 2 pointer and he panicked! That’s why he’s 3rd string/ practice squad dude!
Well if nothing else this game proves that Jimmy G is the #1 starter and has nothing to prove as if he ever did in my mind.Mullens played like a backup which he surely is and his stock dropped if he expects another team to pounce on him as a potential starter..

  9. alleykat69 said, on October 5, 2020 at 10:35 am

NFL deemed the onside kick was the most dangerous play in football with the most injuries occur do to the all out running start by the players in a short distance to raise mayhem.I can see that point of view but it also ruined the onside kick forever with almost zero chance of recovery unless your a stupid team like Atlanta watching this helicopter kick the whole time to go 10 yards when they could of fallen on it at 8 yards are less since the opposing team can’t touch it till it goes the full 10.Special team coaches need to drill that into the heads of the special hands team!!

And yes Shanny had me shaking my head with that pathetic onside kick attempt and especially like BF said 2 minutes 2 TO’s that’s an eternity of time for the defense to make some stops and get the ball back if u kick it deep to begin with..Major brain fart by Shanahan, for all the things he does right in calling a game,in crunch time he still has his Falcons moments..

  10. unca_chuck said, on October 5, 2020 at 10:45 am

My major problem with Shanny is he finds things that work, and then stops doing them.

A major tenet of Walsh’s philosophy was to find a weakness and exploit it until the other team figures out how to stop it.

Shanny did it in the Super Bowl last year. Deebo had a bunch of yards on jet sweeps, and our misdirection run game usually works to great effect. After the drive where Deebo got 10 yards, Kittle got 8, and Aiyuk scored the TD on the WR screen (technically a run), Shanny NEVER went back to those plays and instead ran up the middle for no effect.

    What the actual fuck?

  11. chipower9 said, on October 5, 2020 at 1:22 pm

Lots of blame to pass around. Shanny definitely owns a big part of this loss. The decision to do the onside kick was asinine, and that is putting it lightly. And that two point conversion was a key play in the game. Seems they could have dialed-up something with a higher chance of success. Regardless, not converting there was key.

And Mullens is Mullens. There is a reason he is the backup. But he sure telegraphed that pick six. I have watched it a couple of times and still cannot understand WTF he was trying to do. Mullen owns that play IMO.

The D also owns a big part of this loss. They regularly could not stop Philly. O-line needs go do a better job, too. Again, lots of areas to share the blame.

Niners should have won this game. Hopefully they can learn from this shit show and make the necessary adjustment. At least we have the Fins next, but the Niners still need to get their shit together regardless of who their next opponent is…

  12. unca_chuck said, on October 5, 2020 at 2:09 pm

Funny thing about the pick is that the CB was going to jump the route himself, so HE would have likely had a pick 6 as well.

Mullens played well enough when we didn’t have a defense and Jimmy G and the Beater went down, so I had higher expectations than this debacle.

Hopefully Ryan Fitzpatrick won’t rush for 75 yards next week.

  13. unca_chuck said, on October 5, 2020 at 2:10 pm

I’m pretty sure that Shanny wanted to rest Jimmy G until the Rams game, but this just might push up the timetable.

  19. Flavor said, on October 5, 2020 at 3:58 pm

total cop out. The kicker the Niners have that does kickoffs (the punter I can’t remmeber his name right now) has a big leg he could have done this easily.

    • Flavor said, on October 5, 2020 at 4:04 pm

Also if he did fail to kick it out of end zone but deep enough for a stupid run out the runner could have been tackled at the `10 thus further pinning the Eagles back and ensuring likely great field position when they ultimately punted

      • unca_chuck said, on October 5, 2020 at 6:42 pm

The return would have gotten the game to the 2 minute warning. With only 2 timeouts, they could have run off a lot of time after 3rd down.

Thing is, 3 of 4 kickoffs were touchbacks. You take that risk.

Shanny is the issue. I was talking with my brother about the play calling. Over and over i see great plays that work never to be seen again. Like maybe running Mostert in the super bowl before the midway point of the 2nd Quarter. That said..We are killed by injuris but the only unit that isn’t is the O line and it sucked shit yesterday. Mullens under durress on every pass. Trent Williams killed us!
