A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

It’s so funny to watch their big bad hitters succumb to a bunch of wet-behind-the-ears Atl pitchers. But what the Braves pitchers are doing this post season is really incredible. And now we look to be on the precipice of a Tampa/Braves series. Bring it on.

Hilarious how quickly the Roberts haters came out of the woodwork. Sports radio here blowing up with calls for new manager. 1 guy I heard even was pushing for Cora!!

Zack Greinke said he has enjoyed playing games without fans during the pandemic-shortened season and in the playoffs. “Because then there’s no one there to talk to you and ask for autographs and want pictures and all that stuff. I don’t like to do that stuff. It’s nice not having them, for me. Most people like it. I don’t like it.”

Not exactly what Dale Carnegie had in mind when he wrote, “How to Win Friends & Influence People.” Me? Fuck Greinke . . . and the Astros.

The fans literally support his career by funding his salary, and to him they’re just a nuisance.

    • gianthead said, on October 14, 2020 at 9:33 am

Well dont forget that he had social anxiety disorder…

      • gianthead said, on October 14, 2020 at 9:34 am

        Or should say “has”…

Should have been an accountant then. Perfect for the pandemic!

The only thing he’s guilty of is being stupid enough to say what countless others are thinking…

    From the Athletic….Just for fun..

    The statistics
    Giants third basemen in 2020
    Batting average .278 6th
    On-base percentage .315 8th
    Slugging percentage .444 7th
    WAR (FanGraphs) 0.8 10th
    Wins Above Average 0.4 6th

    Hard-hit % 45.2% 1st
    Barrel % 11.5 3rd
Average exit velocity 91.7 mph 1st
    Defensive runs saved -2 9th
Defensive runs above average 1.6 5th

The point is Longoria is average, and not the worst thing in any lineup. Considering his pay there is no chance he will be traded.

Suggests the giggest lineup iprovement can come from Center. I’m slowly coming around on Dubon. Considering the talent gap between us and the Dodgers (vast), I wouldn’t have an issue with rolling out the same team next year, and signing Glausman and few low rent guys and waiting another year..
2021 contracts for the whole team

    Buster Posey 34 C Vet $21,400,000
Johnny Cueto 35 SP Vet $21,000,000
    Brandon Belt 33 1B Vet $16,000,000
    Evan Longoria 35 3B Vet $18,500,000
    Brandon Crawford 34 SS $15,000,000
    Wilmer Flores 29 2B Vet $3,000,000

The 2 Brandons go away after 2021

    Posey, Cueto after 2022

Longoria the only signed guy for 2023. It has a $5 mil buy out so that means 2023 we have no signed players!

We need to develop some starting pitching!!

    • Winder said, on October 14, 2020 at 9:12 am

Yep, looks like now’s a good time to gather pitching. Hopefully, some team will have the need for a belt and Craw. We have to develop some of our pitching that is in our system already. We picked up 4 pitchers in this years draft so none of them will be ready by next year. i do like the De La salle kid Harrison and think it was a solid shot for us to take.

    • gianthead said, on October 14, 2020 at 9:44 am

Technically Buster and Cueto have buyouts after 2021 of $3 mill and $5 mill respectively and the Giants are certain to invoke them so long term financial health looks good and good enough in my mind to add a top-line for next season and maybe one free-agent bat for 2021 and another for 2021 or two for 2021.

This team somewhat proved they could be competitive this year…adding one arm and bat should solidify them being more competitive for 2021 and another bat should allow them to be playoff competitive for 2022…

      • gianthead said, on October 14, 2020 at 9:45 am

Top-line starter I should have written for 2021…

  4. blade3colorado said, on October 14, 2020 at 9:17 am

Maybe just my take, but as I stated about 1-2 weeks ago, the Giants would have turned that almost .500 record into a .450 or lower record if they had played a full season. Also as I said, the bore core crew from our already ancient championship era would have been in the “shop for repairs,” e.g., see Belt with his heel surgery, or cratered performance wise. No way, no how, they would have maintained their decent playing over a 160 game season. One more reason to savor a shortened, sham season. Still looking at 2-3 years before Z can turn this around. IMO, the draft and key trades will decide our fate, especially the former.

Looking forward to seeing Kershaw take the ball in what I hope to be the deciding game 4 clincher. Go Braves!

  5. willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 10:08 am

mm still a little worried about Braves, though it’s certainly great they have the lead they do and put Dodgers pitching into some question too.
But LA had good approach vs. Anderson and had him out of there early with high pitch count. Then after Braves had 7-0 lead, couple innings later it’s 8-7 with tying run on 3b as their LHs finally came through, with power.
Fried and Anderson are best SPs they’ve got so now Snitker has to manage 2 more Ws out of who he has available.
Roberts of course, has to get 4. And with all that’s at stakes, great theater.

  6. alleykat69 said, on October 14, 2020 at 10:10 am

Roberts really is a bonehead manager.Anyone could see Gosselin was gassed and should of been taken out, but he leaves him in to really setup the Braves big inning. And then he brings in Baez a righty to face Freeman instead of the lefty Koralek was just inexcusable and the result was predictable!
For a manager with the most playoff experience he just never gets it!
After they blow yet another chance with him he should be fired, they will never win a championship ( which is great) with him as the skipper..

  7. Flavor said, on October 14, 2020 at 10:21 am

Grienke should not be criticized at all for what he said. His response was a symptom of his disorder.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 14, 2020 at 10:34 am

      Yup. Textbook brutal honesty.

    • xoot said, on October 14, 2020 at 12:17 pm

It’s rather amazing he’s been as good as he’s been for so long under celebrity pressures. Admirable.

  8. blade3colorado said, on October 14, 2020 at 10:23 am

Also, a la what Flav said about L(OL) A . . . The Dodgers had the bases loaded before Freeman’s bomb. They could have set the tone for that game, but the “die was cast” when Smith came up ant small and ended the inning.

This team just can not handle pressure on the big stage.

  9. zumiee said, on October 14, 2020 at 10:34 am

I have sympathy for Greinke’s disorder, and I think we all do. But two things can be true at the same time. He could also show some sympathy towards the fans, who have had their lives turned quite upside down by the pandemic.

    • gianthead said, on October 14, 2020 at 11:57 am

True but I think one of the problems with people with these type of disorders is that they have a disconnect with social norms amd he may not even understand how to empathize with others…

  10. blade3colorado said, on October 14, 2020 at 11:07 am

lqtm . . . I’ve heard much worse on this blog, but whatever.

  11. alleykat69 said, on October 14, 2020 at 12:34 pm

Not to be brutal but maybe Roberts has the same symptoms as Grienke?.He obviously has no clue how he handles this team once the playoffs start…

  12. Flavor said, on October 14, 2020 at 1:56 pm

Grienke can say whatever the fuck he wants. He’s an incredible success story for anyone who has suffered from SAD. Could he be coached to say things differently? Absolutely but he shouldn’t have to be especially when the worst thing he’s said is a mild hit on the fans. Honestly I can’t imagine fans out there think athletes enjoy all that bullshit anyway. It’s something they have to do because it’s part of the job–and it’s something Grienke does do, i might add, when there are fans there.

  13. willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 2:45 pm

According to Pavs, story on local nbc site says roster limit for 2021 is going back to 26. As he mentions, 2 Cs plus Belt Craw Longo Solano Wilmet on IF plus Yaz Dick Slater Dubon = 11 position players already.
Dec 2 is when Giants must tender contracts to arb eligible.

  14. willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 2:49 pm

There is also quote from Z about SPs would need to go deeper in games to save wear/tear on pen. I agree with lot of what Blade said earlier–what might have looked OK over 2 month season wouldn’t hold up over 6 months and 162, pitching especially.

    • Flavor said, on October 14, 2020 at 2:53 pm

It seems having a rock solid bullpen is necessary to shutting down these stacked lineups 3/4 times through. I’ve never seen so many guys throw 100 in my life it’s incredible

      • willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 3:27 pm

agreed. Coonrod throws 100 though and when it’s in wrong location it winds up over the fence.

    • xoot said, on October 14, 2020 at 3:36 pm

Stricknine and coondog were pretty sorry members of the 100 mph club.

      • alleykat69 said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:06 pm

Sure would be something if the Giants had 100mph arms that could constantly throw strikes along with a nasty slider and curve ball to keep a hitter guessing. But I guess that’s only on a team like Tampa Bay that not only find the unknowns they turn them into “STUDS”
Best organization in baseball with how they get the most production on a cheap payroll other then the A’s..

      • xoot said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:34 pm

Melvin Adon looks promising. So does Hjelle but I think his fb tops out around 95.

  15. willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 3:23 pm

um as i said earlier…still worried about Braves.

  16. zumiee said, on October 14, 2020 at 3:27 pm

The Atlanta starting pitcher today is getting folded, spindled, and mutilated.

  17. willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 3:39 pm

    Never seen anything like that.

  18. Flavor said, on October 14, 2020 at 3:42 pm

my buddy called me yesterday and told me he had a free $50 bet from Draftkings but he had to place the bet on a single bet today. I said “well the Dodgers pretty much have to win today so you might want to play them.” He’s ecstatic right now.

  19. willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 3:58 pm

Bellinger again. And he leads off 2nd.

Maybe Pablo gets his turn out there. Did he ever pitch for Giants? no, right?

    • Flavor said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:36 pm

he pitched for the Giants at least once, it was a clean inning as I recall.

      • alleykat69 said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:47 pm

Not only was Panda’s inning clean, he produced a DP ball…

      • willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 5:18 pm

yeah you’re right. twice once in 2018 and once in 2019 inning each.

  22. xoot said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:35 pm

    Will Pablo pitch tonight?

    • Flavor said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:36 pm

oh fuck yeah he does. I’m waiting for it.

    • xoot said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:36 pm

Sorry. Didn’t see your post, WD. He did pitch for us and he had a pretty good curveball

  23. unca_chuck said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:37 pm

Yeah he did it the last couple years i think.

  24. alleykat69 said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:46 pm

It all started with a single HR by the Braves!
Well that’s what Krukow would say..

  25. Macdog said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:48 pm

Just now seeing the score. What the bloody hell happened? Yeeesh.

    • willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 5:20 pm

First inning set some kind of post season record. couple hits bomb rinse repeat.

  26. xoot said, on October 14, 2020 at 4:57 pm

There it is again on fox sports — the cover of the cover of I’m Shakin.

  27. Macdog said, on October 14, 2020 at 5:25 pm

I remember Pablo pitching the 9th in a rout by the Dodgers, pretty sure it was a scoreless inning in the first game of a doubleheader. I think the Giants won the nightcap on a Cutch HR.

  28. Flavor said, on October 14, 2020 at 5:33 pm

that at bat by Pablo, man he is so done. Had no hope of catching up to Urias FB

    • Macdog said, on October 14, 2020 at 5:39 pm

For a moment there I thought Pablo was going to take a walk down 15-1, now that would’ve been funny.

  29. Macdog said, on October 14, 2020 at 5:37 pm

So 11 runs in the 1st inning. First thing I thought of was the Cards putting up a 10-spot in the 1st inning vs. the Braves last year in Game 5 of the NLDS.

  30. alleykat69 said, on October 14, 2020 at 5:41 pm

Couldn’t catch up with any with the Giants as well. Hence his release along with Pence…
One thing I remember Bochy wanted to do before he hung em up was to give Pablo a chance to play all 9 positions unfortunately Pablo had the injury that derailed that thought..

Pablo in all 3 outfield positions and SS I would of paid to see that though..

  31. Carstie Clausen said, on October 14, 2020 at 6:38 pm

Looks like the LaBumbos finally met a pitcher they could love. Maybe this one gets the frustration out of their system and lets them relax into the kinda lassitude that can flatten down a lineup. Tonight ends with the Braves still up 2-1 in the series. Anyone follow the poop on who their starter is for tomorrow’s game? Is Opie still scheduled for the Chavez Latriners?

    • willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 6:41 pm

Yes Stix I think Opie goes tomorrow. Saw Braves guy have to look it up.

    • willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 6:52 pm

Bryse Wilson to start for Braves. He’s pitched 15 innings this season and wasn’t very good so could be pen game.

  32. willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 6:39 pm

Glasnow is regularly throwing 100. curve is at 85…that’s as hard as just about anything Greinke throws.
Altuve burned him for double on that curve though 2-0 Houston.

  33. Macdog said, on October 14, 2020 at 6:49 pm

    Arozarena bomb ties it.

Dusty may be the perfect mgr for Greinke

  37. willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 7:46 pm

Dusty’s pen blew up on him last night. After the error by Altuve Paredes came in and was all over the place. couple hits plus back to back HBPs, then bloop double to RF. Urquiddy had done pretty well before that.
3 more innings to cover tonight.

  38. alleykat69 said, on October 14, 2020 at 8:09 pm

Alvarado just another long list of Tampa Bay pitchers that can smoke 100 at you.And he hasn’t pitched in a month due to an arm issue? Hasn’t loss a thing..

  39. willedav said, on October 14, 2020 at 8:13 pm

Almost everything Alvarado threw the entire inning was 98 or 99.

  40. alleykat69 said, on October 14, 2020 at 8:17 pm

That was a rough AB for Brantley fouling 2 balls off his foot and u could clearly hearing him say fuck as he was in pain..

The Astros can’t be bothered with commemorative patches to honor Joe Morgan or Jimmy Wynn who passed away earlier this year. Tanks had Ford’s #16 on their sleeves 10 minutes after he died. I left the auto correct version of Ford’s team alone – it was pretty good. I’ll never forgive the Giants for the Jim Ray Hart snub. Davenport got one as did Monte Irvin who never played in San Francisco.
    All 3 died in 2016…
