A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

More Bad News

I am so disgustingly sick of this shit.

I don’t care where he ranks on the all time sack list. Fred Dean was the best at it I ever saw. Every single sack he made was important and he was one of my favorite Niners of all time.

Talk about FLEECING the Chargers, wow. This was a haul.

Transactions: October 2, 1981 – Dean traded from San Diego Chargers to San Francisco 49ers for 2nd round draft pick in 1983.  Note: On April 22, 1983 – the 49ers reacquired that 2nd round draft pick in a trade that had Chargers send two 2nd round draft picks in 1983 to the 49ers in exchange for a 1st round draft pick in 1983 (Billy Ray Smith, LB, Arkansas, 5th overall). San Francisco dealt their reacquired 2nd round pick in another trade and used the newly acquired Chargers 2nd round pick in 1983 (Roger Craig, FB, Nebraska, 49th overall).

The Braves seem content on handing game 4 over to the Dodgers. I’ve never heard of Bryse Wilson and if he’s going to continue to spell his first name that way I give him little chance of success vs LA today.

Grienke was a beast last night.

Fred was one of my favorite Niners too, Flav, and one of the key components to their stunning turnaround in that incredible 1981 season. He had a ton of personality and charisma and was just a great football player, one of the best past rushers in the history of the league.

I’m ready for this fucking year to end. Very sorry to hear about Fred’s passing. RIP big guy.

  2. Lurker John said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:28 am

Walsh also picked the Charger’s pockets for Gary “Big Hands” Johnson that year also, IIRC. He was a fine player for them too.

    • Flavor said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:35 am

loved Big Hands. Back then, I knew every single player on defense, everyone’s number, it was all burned into my soul. Now I watch a game and there’s literally 3-4 guys on defense at a given snap who I’ve never heard of.

      • Lurker John said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:55 am

Weird, isn’t it? I watch a lot of old 49er games on YouTube and do the same thing, pick out guys based on numbers still burnt into my memory. Those were great times to be a 49ers fan. Giants too, they just weren’t very good. lol

      • djloo27 said, on October 15, 2020 at 8:46 am

Yup. I can rattle off the name and number of the starting 22 KC Chiefs from SB IV 50 years ago.
Couldn’t come close to that for SB LIV 8 months ago…

Loved Fred Dean. He gave Niner fans so much joy. When it came time to buy a jersey. I just had to get two. A Freddie Solomon and a Dwaine Board. Two of my all-time favs. RIP Fred Dean.

    • Lurker John said, on October 15, 2020 at 9:58 am

Pee Wee Board was another favorite of mine (Freddie, too, for that matter), a great player for the Niners for a long time. Very underrated, IMO. Both those guys came up when the Niners were still bad and got to play on those first two championship teams.

Springer homers on first pitch he sees bottom first.

    • Lurker John said, on October 15, 2020 at 3:09 pm

      That dude can hit.

  5. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 3:25 pm

Damn, this on really hurts. Dean was such a dominant force whenever he stepped on the field. I didn’t see the Dallas game, but I saw the next one when we beat the Rams. Dean sacked Pat Haden 5 times. In his first 2 games as a Niner he had 11 sacks. And that 84 Super Bowl team had another ex-Charger Louie Kelcher.

Strange to think what would have happened if SD had kept Dean and we never had him. Those first 2 Super Bowls may not have happened.

Aroz otra vez. Man if Ray’s had anyone else hitting Stros would be toast.

    Le’Veon’s a Chief!

    • willedav said, on October 15, 2020 at 4:40 pm

      Was offense a problem?

      • djloo27 said, on October 15, 2020 at 4:55 pm

The rookie RB’s been real good, but they miss Damien Williams who coulda been SB MVP.
Hope Bell can pass block. Mahomes was under pressure all day on Sunday…

      • willedav said, on October 15, 2020 at 5:46 pm

you’re right Loo I was surprised how often Raiders got after him, right from start. And in NFL you can’t have enough depth at running back.’

  8. Flavor said, on October 15, 2020 at 5:00 pm

Bell hasn’t had a relevant season since 2017. That’s forever for a RB. My prediction is, he does shit.

    • alleykat69 said, on October 15, 2020 at 5:13 pm

When u play for the Jets nobody’s relevant. THEY SUCK!! Can’t believe that Gase is still there, that’s how dumb that whole organization is…
Chiefs actually have a dynamic offense, Reid will get the most out of him between catching the ball and running

  15. willedav said, on October 15, 2020 at 5:48 pm

And LA goes up early too on bomb from rook Rios.

  16. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 5:50 pm

WOuld much prefer Rays/Braves than Astericks/Dogs.

  17. chipower9 said, on October 15, 2020 at 5:54 pm

I remember when the Niners got Dean in the trade from the Bolts in 1981. I was fucking pumped. Fred Dean was a bad motherfucker. Loved him! RIP my man.

Charlie – I am rooting Rays all the way (and I am typically hardcore NL).

Hope everyone here in FU are well.

Do you know what bugs me most about Justin Turner?
His stupid signature pine tar smeared over the same spot
between the T&U.What does he do grab his bat loaded with pine tar
and carefully roll it over those 2 letters in the clubhouse before the game thinking 🤔 its a good look, well it’s not!!

  19. Macdog said, on October 15, 2020 at 6:16 pm

    O yeah!

  20. alleykat69 said, on October 15, 2020 at 6:17 pm

    Take that Dodgers and Opie!
Ozuna going yard tied at 1-1

  21. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 6:19 pm

Yup. Losing Dean really sucks. He was a true terror on the field. He took over so many games and just killed it out there. So fun to watch.

Yeah, never been a Braves fan and although I am totally down with them beating LA, I would gladly take the Rays winning it all.

Opie getting a little wiggly out there.

  22. willedav said, on October 15, 2020 at 6:22 pm

Ozuna wasn’t ever going to be a Giant but I always liked the guy. Had hella 60 game season too. Biggest question for lot of teams seems to be will NL have DH this season or not.
Probably likely by time of new agreement, but next year still up in air.

    • djloo27 said, on October 15, 2020 at 6:47 pm

I think I heard from a very inside source on the radio that the DH is definite for the NL next season…

  23. willedav said, on October 15, 2020 at 6:43 pm

not trying to hex the guy but Smoltz is right, Wilson has 5 strong innings only allowing the one bomb to Rios as only hit LA has.

  24. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 6:55 pm

Both these games today are bomb or bust. Opie is bouncing his curveball about 15′ short.

  25. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 6:55 pm

    Yesss!

  26. Macdog said, on October 15, 2020 at 6:57 pm

  28. Macdog said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:03 pm

These were preferable to anything my mother tried to cook…

  32. Flavor said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:14 pm

Dodgers embarrassed on every front. They can’t hit some dude named *Bryse* and then Kershaw can’t rise to the occasion which is typical of him actually.

  33. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:20 pm

Atl wants an 11 spot of their own.

  34. alleykat69 said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:23 pm

They shot their wad yesterday , no bullets left in the chamber..

Swanson Dinners a Mothers true lifesaver!!

Best part of that meal is the peach cake cobbler!

  35. djloo27 said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:28 pm

  37. zumiee said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:36 pm

Smith doesn’t have his best stuff tonight.

  38. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:39 pm

Smith can’t get an out. 20 pitches and nothing yet. Come on!!

  41. alleykat69 said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:42 pm

Got an out at the warning track🙄

  42. zumiee said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:44 pm

He got one swing-through, then walked the guy.
Bad outing from Smith in the biggest game of his career so far.

  43. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 7:49 pm

  46. Bozo said, on October 15, 2020 at 8:00 pm

Go Braves. Way to get out of that one.

  47. zumiee said, on October 15, 2020 at 8:01 pm

OK, that was the most agonizing half-inning in the history of baseball.

  48. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 8:03 pm

    Ozuna in the ozone . . .

  49. Macdog said, on October 15, 2020 at 8:04 pm

    O yeah, another bomb!

  50. Macdog said, on October 15, 2020 at 8:29 pm

I’d hate to see Beaty field without glasses.

  51. unca_chuck said, on October 15, 2020 at 8:31 pm

Beaty with the whiff. Love how he stands there after missing the catch. What a tool. Makes Smith come all the way up the line. And the announcers are amazed that Smith backs up the play. It’s the fucking playoffs.

Still sick and tired of fucking Buck.

  52. zumiee said, on October 15, 2020 at 8:57 pm

Atlanta showed a lot of resilience tonight after what happened to them yesterday.

  53. Carstie Clausen said, on October 15, 2020 at 9:08 pm

LaBumbos may have shot their wad last night–mostly in that single inning outburst. It’s only anecdotal as I’m too occupied to do the research, but my recollection is that when a team has a huge night at the plate, the very next day is usually Debbie Downer. More likely Opie would not have lasted a 162 game season than our Bore Core. Saw it again this season—your starter implodes early on, the other side grabs a hefty lead and your offense fizzles.

  54. willedav said, on October 16, 2020 at 7:20 am

Loo’s 7:28. Never ceases to amaze how many different ways loaded LA team finds to wind up on short end.
