A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Not Dead Yet

Irritating win for LA last night. First a guy named *Bryse* shut them down. Then some dude named *Minter* struck almost all of them out. Then….well we won’t talk about what happened then.

Kat won Loo’s trivia contest last night:

thinking of some of the best nicknames we came up with here: The Bowker Gang was outstanding. Count Chocula for Velez was great. That Doughy Fuck for Law. Big Titty for Molina. Others?

Also…….Where were you on this day exactly 31 years ago today? I wonder whatever became of this pussy teenager that Downs had to carry for some reason.

Always liked Kat’s “win one for the Groper”… what his name, Gaudin? Triple O Adrianza is still on Twins.

Oh man the Big One. Was inside warehouse at work when mchdse. racks began shaking. Old roommate wasn’t too far away, drove by to check on him and watched traffic signal lights swaying from aftershocks.
Luckily apt where i lived was OK, no power lost or anything. So many others not so fortunate.

With all the death and destruction in Bay Area, that was such an awful World Series. A’s had powerhouse but still, just wasn’t the same.

Looking at composite box from B/R, Rays are hitting .199 as a team with 20 BBs 70 Ks. Adames Diaz Lowe Wendle and Meadows are all below Mendoza line. Margot and Aroz are only guys hitting, kinda funny as Margot is in his old home yard. His buddy Renfroe is 2 for 9 with 6 Ks. They outhomered Stros again last night, second time they’ve lost a game where they’ve done that.
Morton beat Mc Cullers last time out, so we’ll see.

Tonight’s action should tell the tale in the Divisions. Last night did not end well in the Senior Circuit as the DDDDD’s exploded against fair to middling Atlanta pitching. In case you are curious the quintuples stand for Damn, Dire, Dirty, Despicable Dodgers, owned by the hyper-rich Googs.

“El Presidente” for Whitehead was outstanding. It was inspired by a comment I made about his appearance, but I didn’t come up with the name. The true genius should come forward….

  7. zumiee said, on October 17, 2020 at 8:45 am

That Sports Illustrated cover is borderline journalistic fraud. SI never should have used that cover. It implies things about the Candlestick situation that were not true. Being in Candlestick Park during the earthquake turned out to be a very safe place to be. My mom (and her generation) would have told Downs to put that boy down and let him walk.

    • Bozo said, on October 17, 2020 at 11:13 am

It really rocked us upstairs but she sure held up.

  8. alleykat69 said, on October 17, 2020 at 9:33 am

I agree Zumiee the Candlestick was built stronger then Fort Knox, millions and millions of rebar and concrete and metal beam supports went into that stadium project.
To withstand a 8.9 earthquake with just the light towers swaying some is quite impressive how the old lady held up!!
And yes that kid is total puss and I bet his friends ragged on him for years after seeing his wimpy face on the cover of SI..

  9. Flavor said, on October 17, 2020 at 9:58 am

this is the earliest documented call for El Presidente. It IS possible this nickname was born at the blogspot blog, sadly I don’t have access to that gold anymore
stixwiz said, on June 5, 2010 at 10:17 am (Edit)
Mea Culpa. Mea Culpa Mea Ultime Maxima Culpa. I didn’t believe. I didn’t believe. Okay, so it was the bottom of the 2nd and i had switched over from “mail” to the Yahoo game posting and the Pirates had plated three with a runner on 2nd and one out; this after Pablo and Huff had gone GDP in the first two SF plate appearances. So being a bit beat from the day, i shut down the computer and hit the bed with a book.

Little did i know that Drrrrty is a grown-up ML pitcher now and he didn’t let a little thing like a four-run deficit after two prevent him from shutting down the Pirates for the rest of his stint. Not like last season.

Little did i know that Posey would atone for his two-base, ultimately 4-run error and score on Rowand’s GDP in the fifth and later as the rally-point for one of the 2-run Taters.

Little did i know that Secret Weapon El Presidente would double up Molina’s HR total with a 12-pitch AB shocker of his own into the seats.

Little did i know that Huff the Magic Dragon would seat a two-run shot for his first road HR of the year and

Little did i know that Huff’s magic would promptly get echoed with a second double-run moonshot by OOOOO ree Bay.

Little did i know, that though held hitless for the night, like Pablo and Rowand, Andres Torres would make a highlight-reel catch on Doumit’s drive in the 9th.

Little did I know that Santiago Casilla would stifle a Buc’s rally and that Guillermo Mota would once more smother an opponent.

Little did i know that once again Brian Wilson would close out the game in style.

Goes to show a couple things: This team, with its sparkplugging Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez, are not the “can’t come back from behind” guys of last year and: Even as an Uber-Polly i knew very little about the winning character that this team is developing ~ even in one of those previously lethal road-games where they were down four-zip by the second inning.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on October 17, 2020 at 5:20 pm

Little do I recall that I wrote all that. Yet,I must have copped “El Presidente” from another observer. Doesn’t sound like my style. But that game was a harbinger of one amazing season, the beginning of our split even year trifecta. It was like the whole Giants world was on the best mushrooms available—“Huff the Magic Dragon” indeed.

I was at the Stick in the upper boxes, same section as Ed Montague. His kids were wearing NL ump caps, I thought that was pretty cool.

  12. Flavor said, on October 17, 2020 at 10:22 am

whiteside had an entire season of at bats in 2009 and the blogspot was still active then so I am assuming that is where the nickname was born

    • willedav said, on October 17, 2020 at 10:31 am

mm someone iirc was making jokes about he looked like some Prez from 1850s or something…millard fillmore look a like, and I think a pic of him got posted.

    • Bozo said, on October 17, 2020 at 11:10 am

Wasn’t that nickname one of Twin’s? I remember he came up with Whiteside’s parents name. Wasn’t it Vern and Vera? Vera’s jello surprise salad or something.

Yeah he was never the same pitcher during most of 89-90 due to back and arm problems caused by carrying that whiny 😫 kid..
Downs was an up and comer when he first came up, I liked his stuff and really thought he had 20 win potential in him..

It was Vera’s famous ambrosia salad, I think.
I think it was TF’s way of saying Whiteside was an average guy who probably never should have spent much time in the major leagues.

    • xoot said, on October 17, 2020 at 1:59 pm

      Lol

    • zumiee said, on October 17, 2020 at 2:02 pm

It was so rare to see TF go negative on a Giants player. The two I remember the most were Whiteside and Pagan.

    • xoot said, on October 17, 2020 at 2:05 pm

Don’t you recall how mercilessly he mocked Cain’s southern ergo stupid mind before 2010? The guy was a middle-brow snob who didn’t know jack about the south.

      • Flavor said, on October 17, 2020 at 2:13 pm

        Twinfan had many faults.

      • zumiee said, on October 17, 2020 at 2:13 pm

Well, I certainly remember some comments TF made about the Calif. Central Valley, where I reside, that made the Central Valley sound like hicksville.
He said Kaepernick had a “Central Valley accent,” which may be the most ludicrous thing TF ever said on the blog.
I also remember TF being endlessly amused that Belt likes eating at Olive Garden.

  22. zumiee said, on October 17, 2020 at 2:20 pm

My favorite interactions with TF on the blog were about TV shows and movies. He was more easy-going talking about those. We had some good Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul conversations.

  23. willedav said, on October 17, 2020 at 2:25 pm

Speaking of Pagan, was it Twin who called him Crazy Horse?

  24. xoot said, on October 17, 2020 at 2:46 pm

Pagan was nicknamed crazy horse with the Mets, before he came to sf.

that catch by Betts was awesome and his celebration after is why I love baseball. Sucks that he caught it tho

    • xoot said, on October 17, 2020 at 4:08 pm

Betts is terrific. Not happy that he plays for the bums. Maybe Acuña will respond.

  26. unca_chuck said, on October 17, 2020 at 3:36 pm

Hard not to like Betts. He’s look like a great teammate. Missing this game. My daughter needs her car fixed so she comes to me. “Daaaad, they want $2400 to replace the AC compressor and condenser!” Happy Saturday to me.

Talk about nicknames I believe it was Snarkk who coined that one for Twin and it was so perfect I still crackup hearing it..

  28. xoot said, on October 17, 2020 at 4:36 pm

Back when I first started reading The Splash, ferrethead asked where were you when the earthquake hit? Iirc, she and some friends had just finished a joint in the parking lot and were about to sprint to their seats at the Stick. That’s definitely one of the best I’ve ever read.

  32. Carstie Clausen said, on October 17, 2020 at 5:33 pm

LaBumbos gave it their best shot today with Ferris Buehler. Tomorrow is a new day and once again the relative quality of the starting pitchers will likely determine the tenor of the contest.

Yes, Betts is a great player and a competitor the likes of which LA hasn’t seen in years. But remember this–as if this bunch would have forgotten– after being frozen out of the Big Palooka since ’88 those Goog owners are jonesing for a win and so is all of the SoCal fandumb.

A lot of money went on the table for Mookie. Boston ownership must be like the one they had back in the early 20’s who sold Babe Ruth to the Yanks so he could put on an opera. Despite having some of the best scouting and player development people in the game, the Bums had to pay top dollar to see if they can finally do it. If they can’t top Atlanta tomorrow, there will be a lot of Angelos becoming instant baldies on account tearing their hair out.

  33. xoot said, on October 17, 2020 at 5:44 pm

Every time I see Buehler pitch I compare him mind’s eye with the Giants’ Vandy draft pick Beede and even post TJ rehab best bet Beede looks weak. It’s as if Evans just had to draft a pitcher from Vandy becz everyone else was.

Let’s hope the bums’ pitching craps out tomorrow.

this was the last email I sent Twin. I am a terrible person.

    Flavor
    Wed, Nov 1, 2017, 7:42 AM
    to Michael

Michael– this was a disappointing email to receive. I get up at 4am, every day, and work two jobs to provide for myself and my daughter and pay for her private school in Costa Rica. When I get home at the end of the day I am tired as fuck. My parents want to know why I don’t call them either. That’s the reason. You are in my thoughts and prayers, but I’m not calling anyone these days or doing anything after my jobs other than watching a few innings of baseball and falling asleep. I wouldn’t be a very supportive call anyway and I know that, so why call you and make it worse? So don’t take it personally, and again I wish you well, but my focus is on getting through the day, getting up at 4am and doing it all over again. Emails like the one you sent don’t make either of us feel better, do they?
