A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

All Tied Up

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 25, 2020

Ok, had some stuff going on yesterday but am back on the beam. I missed the game and it sounds like I missed a great one. A great ending, at least. Saw the final play on twitter. If the Rays can somehow mange to pull this off, oh what the epic collapse it will be for LA. This is why we love seeing them in the post season. If we can’t have SF we might as well get to sit back and watch a legendary implosion.

As Chuck said last night, I thought Jansen wasn’t going to be in traditional save closer role but Roberts backed himself into a corner. Night before he had bigger lead and margin of error to work with and the Aroz bomb, on a flat cutter, didn’t affect outcome.
Last night, um…2 singles and a walk and Series is tied. Graterol I guess he just didn’t trust to leave in there.

Dodger fans were livid he’d left Baez in for another inning after he’d given up 3 run bomb to give Rays the lead, and sure enough there went another one out the yard to tie it back up in top of inning.

I’ve never understood why people think Roberts is a good manager, he makes questionable decisions constantly. Seems like he peaked in 2004.

  3. willedav said, on October 25, 2020 at 7:55 am

Interesting that both pens screwed up royally. Baez gave up bomb in consecutive innings; only 2 of 4 runs scored were against him because Treinen had put 2 guys on he inherited.
Dodgers meanwhile scored 5 runs on 10 hits in 5 innings vs. Rays pen guys.
Rare off night for “flookie” as Loo said, with 0-5. Bellinger went 0-4 too.
Rays were about to lose game in which they had out homered LA 4-2.

Have a classic hard bop 1960 Hank Mobley CD “Roll Call”, with tune called My Groove, Your Move on it. Let’s see what Roberts next move is for Game 5.

    • willedav said, on October 25, 2020 at 7:56 am

At one point in middle of game both teams had scored off others in 4 consecutive innings.

sorry Craig I don’t know how to unsend a comment or delete. It was supposed to be the final “out” of the game call by bob menory. Google it. Funny shit!

Baseball is the greatest game of all time and last night proves it.

  7. Bozo said, on October 25, 2020 at 9:24 am

I haven’t watched any of the WS so far, but I did see last night’s ending online. Roberts blowing a gasket at the end was must see TV, loved it.

  8. xoot said, on October 25, 2020 at 9:31 am

The bloop to short RF bounced predictably on the plastic grass. But what chance was there for a play at the plate w/ 2 outs? Then the wheel play– wheels falling off. bums thought they were invincible. If the Rays win the series now that highlight will delight for decades. Ojala que si, as they say.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 25, 2020 at 12:18 pm

THey were strictly going after the back runner with the big bobble.

      • xoot said, on October 25, 2020 at 12:21 pm

How you figure. Aroz was on the other side of the field when Taylor rushed to scoop and throw in one motion. He shouldn’t’ve rushed. The tying run was going to score. A clean pick and throw to the cutoff man and at worst Aroz is on third.

When the pressure is on the Dodgers defense turns into the bad news bears!
The Dodgers dry humping each other in the dugout a classic line!
Go Rays! The team I had all the way, and Kershaw will have another epic collapse tonight right Rooster 🐔

Arguably the single goofiest part of that final play was Arozarena falling down for no reason whatsoever. He just flat out tripped over himself.

As Bagggarly pointed out, a funny sidelight was Jansen standing stupidly in the IF, near the plate, wondering where he was supposed to be as he futilely watched the colossal fuck up there.

Always thought long KO and punt returns were coolest plays. Titans punted with just under 2 minutes left, Steelers guy took it at his own 26 and returned it 57 yds with beautiful cut back move and into open spaces before being run down. 3 plays 43 seconds later they score another TD.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 25, 2020 at 1:07 pm

Loved watching John Taylor run back punts for the Niners. Such an underrated weapon.

“I’ve never understood why people think Roberts is a good manager, he makes questionable decisions constantly.”

His strength is generally seen in managing personalities, in getting the players to buy into so much analytics-driven platooning the last several years. Although the Dodgers didn’t do as much platooning this season.

  18. willedav said, on October 25, 2020 at 1:36 pm

Happy birthdays to Mac and Dirt!
Watched 3 drives in afternoon games.
Raiders score in 3 and half minutes, capped by USC’s Nelson Agholor.
Brady comes right back and ties it on his own sneak.
Niners go right down field where G used to watch and score TD.

Mac, the NYG’s are not that far out of first place. Division is anyone’s to win.

    • alleykat69 said, on October 25, 2020 at 1:59 pm

Yeah especially with Washington kicking the Cowboys asses!
They are so pathetic they really need to fire Mike Nolan the players are all confused with whatever schemes he trying to use.McCarthy should be on the hot seat as well but I’m sure Jerry Jones won’t do that yet..

What a gift from Barnes, trying to steal with Seager up and Glasnot struggling.

  42. willedav said, on October 25, 2020 at 5:51 pm

cue what Loo said about Koufax–Glass leaves 98 fastball up and out over plate to Pederson and he homers.
then he throws 3 fastballs 98 plus to Barnes the #9 hitter that aren’t strikes and walks him. Then he walks Seager. Um, take something off and find the corners of the quadrants of plate where the hitter can’t beat you and get people out.

  43. djloo27 said, on October 25, 2020 at 6:15 pm

What’s cool about 4K is they don’t show the commercials. Only a few games shown in it tho. You get a high-level view of the field and the grounds crew raking the field. Watched the Notre Dame game yesterday it was interminable when you realize how long the commercial breaks are.

It seems to be worse these days as the same thing happened at the Pittsburgh / Niner game last year. Just like 5-6 minutes of nothing every break.

He did it twice in one game for Indians, something that hadn’t been done in 25 years. good write up on him in SABR and also in BR bullpen site. famous story he tells about playing ball in 50s, and with his dark skin being told in a restaurant in south by a waitress, “We don’t serve Negroes.” To which he responded, “That’s OK I don’t eat Negroes. I just want some rice and beans.”

  64. willedav said, on October 25, 2020 at 7:02 pm

that hurt. He’d set down 9 in a row before that.

  65. James said, on October 25, 2020 at 7:12 pm

Steals of home that are a part of double steals don’t compare to what Margot tried to do. I have a feeling the other steal attempts being cited by the announcers fall into that category.

I’m not a baseball nerd or anything, but there’s one little thing that always bugs the shit out of me (and I’ve mentioned it here before) that Aroz did in yesterday’s game before he fell down the 3rd base line: as he rounded 3rd, he hit the bag with his left (inside) foot. From Little League on, they always teach you to hit the bag with the outside foot, it gives you a natural pivot and thrust (calm down, boys) down the line. I watched it a few times, it’s not necessarily why Aroz fell a few steps later, but still. Ok, mini-rant over.

    • alleykat69 said, on October 25, 2020 at 7:58 pm

Pivot and Thrust is that similar with Bend and Snap from Legally Blonde?
No but seriously P/A your right from little league thru softball leagues hit the bag on the inside with your right foot your momentum is in perfect balance to sprint home with…

  70. alleykat69 said, on October 25, 2020 at 7:50 pm

Don Carrithers , wow I watched him try and pitch at the Stick in 72-73 he was painful to watch!

Something else odd Roberts does is how often he uses Smith to DH and sometimes hits him in front of Bellinger. He k’s a lot and he’s now 3-17 in 5 games with 0-4 tonight. Pollock hardly plays at all, and the Dodgers paid $60 mil for him.

  72. Macdog said, on October 25, 2020 at 8:05 pm

Yeah I’m with you Willied I been thinking the same thing I why Roberts bats the youngster Smith ahead of Bellinger in any situation..

  75. James said, on October 25, 2020 at 8:30 pm

Smith’s splits over a brief career show a 1028 OPS against right handers. That’s probably why he’s often playing ahead of Pollock, even when he’s not catching.
