A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Pic Of The Day

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 17, 2020

I love these pictures from the 70’s, easily my favorite era forbaseball pics. I do sometimes enjoy the one-off from the 20’s that Dirt sometimes posts. Those goofy looking bastards give me a solid chuckle………

I actually had no recollection of what position Carew played. After I saw this pic I had to look it up. All you ever think about with Carew is the bat.

    Nice pic, cool site.
Wanted to ask about something I saw Sunday at Del mar.
Apprentice Jessica Pyfer was on horse Capitol Heat in Race #2 5 and half furlongs with morning line favorite. Soon after leaving gate, she lost her right iron, and later recovered it to finish third.
On replay, in early part of race the other jockeys are almost standing up, leaning forward on their mounts. She is shown bouncing up and down…this seems dangerous, no? Her boot slipped out?

2 races later same lady rode winner Charlito to the win and C Blacker commented she must feel relieved over what happened earlier.

Couple days before that at Woodbine a horse in middle of track #5 I think in big field unseated jockey out of the gate and ran alongside outside for part of race; jockey was unhurt, luckily.

Pyfer is an apprentice with very little experience. She’s pretty good looking and she’s connected in the SoCal racing scene and I wonder if she hasn’t been fast tracked to this opportunity. She needs more practice and should probably be at a weaker racing meet. But, hey, she getting mounts. Yes it’s very dangerous, I’m surprised she recovered to place in the race. Saddle slipping wouldn’t be her fault but losing an iron probably was. Loo can chime in on this…….

It’s kind of like riding a bike with your feet off the pedals…

    • gianthead said, on November 17, 2020 at 9:13 am

Prob would only happen in a short race like that one..

      • djloo27 said, on November 17, 2020 at 9:58 am

Usually it happens at the break when there’s a lot of inadvertent contact and jostling…

story on MLBTR said according to Hank Smyly wanted 3 yr deal in $30 mil range, before taking $11mil Braves offer. Pitched all of 26 innings this season, 114 year before, 0 in 2017 and 2018. As song goes, Nice work if you can get it.
So now it’s back to dumpster diving, apparently.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on November 17, 2020 at 7:39 am

Grant Brisbee of the Athletic, via MLBTR has lined up four possible new Smylys for SF”. Most of them are in limbo right now, recovering from injuries and such: Chris Archer, a 32 YO RHP; Lefty Alex Wood, 29; 34 YO Michael Shoemaker, a RHP and 30 YO Anthony DeScalfini, another RHP. Looking over the stats Wood, most recently with the LaBumbos, might be the most probable pickup. But its all just speculation at this point.

    • willedav said, on November 17, 2020 at 8:13 am

According to Hank, Smyly grew up idolizing Braves of Madduz Glavine Smoltz era while growing up in south.
“He (Smyly) said the Giants made no offer and ‘weren’t as aggressive trying to sign players early like the Braves were.’

  3. alleykat69 said, on November 17, 2020 at 8:46 am

I’m fine with Smyly moving on, just another line of .500 pitchers and 11mil no thanks.Z does a good job finding the “prove it” to me again season at a cut rate price, I’m sure that’s what he will do again..

We have enough lefties, don’t we?

  5. Lurker John said, on November 17, 2020 at 9:02 am

Good pic of a great player. I got to see Carew play quite a bit when we lived in Goleta and he was playing for the Angels. Great player, good dude.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on November 17, 2020 at 10:52 am

Was all pissed off when the Twins tightwad owner, Calvin Griffith, did not do all he could to retain Carew, the first truly significant free-agent pickup. Gene Autrey’s Angels made him a nice offer, so he went to LaLaLand and reestablished his formidable credentials as a HOF great.

It was all I had. So nice and simple.
Little to no recollection of the 3B Miller, who actually played a lot in ’74 & ’75 (looked it up) and why the hell did Speier hit 5th? Cubs’ Cardenal yet another OF who came up with SF and was traded away…

      • willedav said, on November 17, 2020 at 10:50 am

yes exactly on Jose Cardenal. don’t remember the Miller guy either.
Ah the days of complete game W. Doesn’t appear third time through order bothered Barr much.

      • unca_chuck said, on November 17, 2020 at 1:18 pm

Dave Rader. There’s a guy i haven’t thought of in forever. Yeah, Miller rings no bells at 3rd base.

Rick Monday as a Cubbie. And I just hated him as a Dodger. Bill Madlock before he came west. Billy Williams still playing. Man, saw him in 1969 at Wrigley.

Was the SP ex-G Steve Stone? Can’t remember his timeline

I agree, Craig, about the ’70’s photos and the baseball in general from that time. It probably comes down to growing up in that decade, but I love a lot of players and teams from that era. Baseball was very exciting to me then. Today, no so much. They need to stop fucking with the game.

I’ve always been a box score junkie. When I was stationed in Germany, following the Giants via box scores in the “Stars and Stripes” was about all I had, and those were usually posted 2-3 days after the games were played.

    • gianthead said, on November 17, 2020 at 9:18 am

I was stuck for 2 months in 1980 in Turkey as a 12 year old kid with mother and brother for a summer and only lifeline was when dad sent Giant boxscore and other sport clippings…

  9. gianthead said, on November 17, 2020 at 9:11 am

Dubs talk…I can see them drafting this Wisenheimer kid and signing Robin Lopez who just opted out of his deal with the Bucks…if wisemheimer looks like a stud his rookie year then I think him in a package before the trade deadline or before next season for Giannis is a possibility. Wont say 50/50 but still like the odds…

ouch. If I’m the Padres I look into a damaged goods claim

  11. unca_chuck said, on November 17, 2020 at 10:23 am

Yup. Saw that. Caveat emptor indeed.

  12. willedav said, on November 17, 2020 at 10:54 am

Epstein leaving Cubs as of Friday. MLBTR had column on them this AM, on who might get traded or non tendered. hmmnn

    • Lurker John said, on November 17, 2020 at 11:46 am

Wonder why. The great wunderkind of GM’s.

  13. alleykat69 said, on November 17, 2020 at 12:57 pm

I’m sure the Padres knew about Clevinger’s up coming TJ surgery before inking him to a new 2 year deal that is heavily backloaded which means that had to of known imo..

Mrs. snarkk’s elderly mother is in hospital in TX in very serious condition with Covid. It’s touch and go right now. She has multiple risk factors in addition to being old. Several other family members of Mrs. snarkk have also come down with it there, in varying conditions so far at home, some with risk factors. Every day these past months when I read in media that some people say this Covid is a hoax, it’s not real, or just a flu, my blood boiled, because I know two people who had previously healthy relatives die of it, and this was before this personal situation. Stay safe, wear masks, be careful and don’t think for even a second that you’re immune from this shit…

    • willedav said, on November 17, 2020 at 2:56 pm

Sorry to hear that Snarkk. Hope for best outcome for all involved. Yes unfortunate politics has gotten in way of science and collective good of society to detriment of health of so many in our country.

      • xoot said, on November 17, 2020 at 3:44 pm

My sympathy, Snarkk. I hope your family members get the best treatment available and then get healthy. And thanks for posting this. We all need reminders daily that we’re in this together and that the inconveniences and sacrifices necessary to stop the spread are minuscule compared to the seriousness of the disease. Best to you and yours.

  16. alleykat69 said, on November 17, 2020 at 2:56 pm

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and Mrs.Snarkk and her mother and other relatives Snarkk..
Yes this Covid is heartbreaking to so many people and for now until a vaccine is available, the best everyone can do is wear a mask, stay inside as much as possible and avoid large gatherings including maybe family members at Thanksgiving which is a sad thought in this screwed up 2020..

  17. Winder said, on November 17, 2020 at 3:48 pm

snarkk- The blatant disregard and common decency for others makes my blood boil also. I hope and pray your loved ones get well and stay safe.

  18. djloo27 said, on November 17, 2020 at 4:46 pm

Best wishes to all of them, Snarkk…

  19. unca_chuck said, on November 17, 2020 at 5:05 pm

Hope all goes well as can be expected, Snarkk. This is such a fucked up mess that absolutely didn’t need to be.

Yes, Tom, hope all will be well with all Snarkks and Snarkkinlaws and Snarkkettes. Fucking Corona. That’s what everybody over here just keeps saying, over and over, fucking Corona…
