Making It Through The Winter

Any PaSalon updates, Flavor?

____________________________________________________

Yes~ Jeez I thought I shared this already but things have been crazy maybe I didn’t: Pa Salon’s house survived. Other house/structures nearby did not. I know he stayed the night at the Grand Sierra Resort before going home the next day to the good news (for him).

Also, you guys should know that the GREAT DJ Loo has been nearly a better vet to my family than our actual vet with help answering questions as we navigate this new world of having a diabetic cat.

Still waiting on news about Snarkk’s MIL, I know Flap Nation stands with his family in wishing a good outcome for her.

This is what we do in the Winter time—try to side step the landmines in our lives and make it safely to the other side when ChiPower starts stirring around, talking about looking out that window waiting for Spring to have Sprung.

Loo – thank you for your concern. I am safe and sound, back in the house after the excitement of Tuesday. There were some houses that burned in the subdivision I live in, one of them less than a mile from me, but our house escaped without incident. It hadn’t rained in Reno for months but we got probably an inch of rain that evening which basically put that bitch out! Thanks again.

Nice to hear some good news, Pa.
Hope you won’t have to deal with that again…

    Good news PaSalon.
Loo San Jose St. track team aka Speed City. Statue is up on campus, notably only for Mr. Carlos and Mr. Smith.
Football this weekend is at hated rivals one loss Fresno St. Following weekend league powerhouse San Diego St. plays there…so we’re hoping for double beatdown to send Bulldogs scurrying back into oblivion of Tule Fog.

  3. unca_chuck said, on November 20, 2020 at 8:13 am

Is tule fog still a thing? Haven’t seen that in a decade. And glad to hear your house is still standing, Paul.

Hah! This reminds me of something.

      lulz.

Lead story on Rule 5 kicking in tonight. Full poop on MLBTR. Extensive. While Nato and Fillies have as many as 9 spots open on their 40-man, not much room for Z&H to dumpster-dive as SF has only one opening.

I have had to put all but one my cats on diets because of potential diabetes. My vet said they are way to fat. i have four cats. Three of em are in the 3-6 year range and the 4th is 14. The 14 year old was fat and on steroids a couple of years age for gum infections. It was so bad he couldn’t eat. Now he is skin and bones so I sneak him more food than the others. He has an appointment with the vet in a couple of weeks and am pretty sure they are gonna tell me to put him down.

    • Flavor said, on November 20, 2020 at 8:37 am

very sorry to hear that. Animals sometimes become our most important family members, right?

      • Winder said, on November 20, 2020 at 9:24 am

        Yep they are family

    • djloo27 said, on November 20, 2020 at 8:42 am

No matter what happens, you can always feel good knowing you gave him a great home for 14 years.
Cats are very brave, but they pretty much let you know when they’ve had enough.
Still hurts when the time comes…

      • Winder said, on November 20, 2020 at 9:25 am

Yes he is an old friend who is very fragile. If his bloodwork comes back clear I am not putting him down

  7. Carstie Clausen said, on November 20, 2020 at 8:34 am

Three-position infielder. LH bat with pop. The super-sub who seems to have doomed Robertson’s stay with the Giants. Jason Vosler, 27. Was most recently in the Padres system. Giants have tried to get him in a trade previously, but picked him recently in MiL free-agency. Marie Guardado has the full story on MLB.com. Vosler, a New York native, has hit for both average and speed. He’s expected to sub Longo a bunch, as well as Belt and from time to time, 2B as well.

So,from the reports to date, Giants may be able to check off their offensive need #1…yet another Z&H dumpster diving specialty as per Dick-Dick, our Silver Slugger 2nd baseman and YaZmaTaZ.

Focus now will be pitching: As many as two starters—likely one with a good track-record, but injured for much of 2020 AND perhaps a pair of reliable veteran relievers. IF SF is willing to go at least one high-bucks for the bullpen, this past season’s bleeding ulcer relief staff may transform into an asset.

Stix whatever happened to your animals?

Wonderful friends took them to no-kill shelters within the area. Two of the kittens came to where I’m staying now at my sister’s place in the Twin Cities suburbs. A male and female–non breeding. My dog Macoujou went to a friend who’s a total dog-lover. He not only has house privileges. It extends to the bed. Helps save on heating in Minnesota winters, I suppose. Not only is he spoiled, but Lutefisk and Else are two plenty spoiled cats. Three people doting on them and now four since I’ve been here. My indoor cats were selected for affectionate qualities. Many of the barn-kittens in my area, even when adopted at 6-8 weeks never seem to become quite so Lovey-dovey. Some scientific studies indicate that emotional/psychological qualities can become infused into the very genes.

Wishing the best fir Winder and his 14 Y.O. companion. I was extremely fortunate with Mr. Mttzfttz, who lived to age 20. One summer day he simply gave up the ghost right on the kitchen floor. Always wearing a tux and tail, Mr. M. was a cat of legend. Perhaps one day I’ll share a couple of the most telling true tales.

As most of you have probably learned, the Ancient Egyptians considered cats as sacred. The rationalist, scientific types claim that it was because they protected grain supplies from rodents. That’s probably part of the story.

I guess that rules out LaStella.
And guys like Ozuna and Tanaka aren’t even remotely under consideration…

This fire 🔥 in Reno was eerily similar to the one in 2011 except that one started after midnight in 70 mph winds that destroyed 43 homes. It was real close to my parents house off of McCarran&Lakeview and like this one the fire raced up and down the canyons and jumping on the other side of streets with the embers from the winds.

Fortunately for my parents who were elderly ( have since both passed away) my niece was coming out of a midnight movie show of Twilight series and noticed the flames and immediately called my sister waking her up and told her u better race over and get are mom&dad which she did it was quite a chaotic scene in the dark and smoke everywhere. But everyone got out safe in there neighborhood. It ended up being started by arching power lines from the strong winds.I’m curious if that’s how this one off of Caughlin Ranch started? It might have been the same way? Thank goodness Pa Salon’s house was spared and he and his family are safe. Those fires in Reno can be real deadly with the combination of dry conditions and extreme winds!!

Friend of mine found and took care of a feral cat in 1999 that would jump up to his 2nd story ledge when he lived in Truckee. He just put it down early this year. He had no idea how old he was but it was at least 20. Tough little guy but he had a lot of problems and he did a lot to keep him going from about 14 on. That cat lived in Truckee, Reno, Pacifica, San Mateo, South City, and finally North Carolina. He was simply ‘the cat.’ One of the coolest critters I’ve ever met.

    • Winder said, on November 20, 2020 at 12:35 pm

Great story. One of the cats I have now wandered into our yard when we lived in Hawaii. She was about 2/3 months old but you could tell she lived outside. She is kind of an anomaly since she is a orange and white tabby female. Where as 99% of all orange and white tabbys are males. She thinks she is queen of everything.

    Update on my MIL:
She is still in very serious condition, she apparently had small heart attack brought on by stress on body, etc., which they say is not unusual for her age (mid 80s) with Covid, but has possibly plateaued just short of going on ventilator, which would be, well, a road to the end. Fingers crossed. She is on forced oxygen with a bipap machine, which is non-invasive, and when taken off for testing has much trouble breathing. Still on multiple meds. Latest on BIL (60s) is that he is developing pneumonia, but not bad enough yet for hospital. Other two family members are fair (SIL, 50s) and much better (male in his 20s). I’ll keep you posted from time to time. Stay safe out there, and wear a damn mask…

    • alleykat69 said, on November 20, 2020 at 1:57 pm

My positive thoughts and prayers continue to go out for all your relatives affected Snarkk🙏 Stay Strong and Safe!

    • willedav said, on November 20, 2020 at 2:46 pm

best of luck to health of in laws Snarkk. read something today forwarded by old b-ball friend, story in NYT about Hong Kong. Scientists think much more value in wearing masks to protect vs. airborne droplets than cleaning surfaces. Hope everyone can stay safe if you are with family/friends at Holiday.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on November 20, 2020 at 5:18 pm

All the best for her. Dealing with any kind of medical issue, particularly a serious one which would normally get a lot of attention from the professionals, is probably even more of an issue now with the covid. Some even claim that all the stresses that go along with the virus and the lockdowns have caused more havoc than covid itself, Here in Minnesota the governor mandated Thanksgiving dinner to be only for people in your own household.

Ha in #2 Simon Bray’s pick Chaos Theory wins on turf as Umberto Rispoli gets through on rail and passes 2 horses at end to win with favorite. Exciting race.
Yes they mentioned that Pratt and Rispoli, 2 top jockeys from previous Del Mar meet, win first two today.

Loo do you think the Mets will try and pull the rug out on the Yanks and go after DJ LeMaheiu now that Cano is gone for the year?

    • djloo27 said, on November 20, 2020 at 3:55 pm

That was my reflex the other day, but I don’t think that anymore.
Better to move McNeil to his natural position (2nd) and get help at other positions.
I think LeMahieu leaves NY altogether.
Lots of Arenado rumors out there including the Dodgers…

Oh, man. What a nightmare, Snarkk. I just wish people would forget the politics and do what’s right for each other.

My niece (18) and nephew (29), not siblings, are both fine. My nephew’s fiancee still can’t smell anything but taste is slowly coming back. Lost a friend (59) way back in March, and a friend from work (48) ended up in the hospital twice but has fully recovered. My oldest friend’s wife is in Indiana not able to see her dying father (92) due to hospital COVID restrictions. They are trying to get him home before he passes. Heartbreaking. What a fucking year.

    • djloo27 said, on November 20, 2020 at 5:56 pm

What do you order at 5 Guys?

    • Carstie Clausen said, on November 20, 2020 at 5:23 pm

The only Castros on my radar screen are the late Fidel, his brother Raul and that neighborhood in SF. Would somebody fill us in on Kervin, The other three are pretty well known to pipeline followers.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on November 20, 2020 at 5:31 pm

Flipside to the 40-man Four is that SF dfa-ed Chris Shaw, Aramis Garcia and Jordan Humphreys, the pitcher received from the Mets for Billy Hamilton. Doval may be pretty close to The Show. Canario, our third-best OF prospect may get a cup of coffee or more in ’22. Both Shaw and Garcia (who had been in the I.L. were evidently rated as 4-A types.

      • djloo27 said, on November 20, 2020 at 5:54 pm

        Shaw’s a very typical Giant-type bust…

btw, both WilcoJoe and Sarge have messaged me on twitter saying they can’t access the Flap from their ph. Honestly don’t know what to do about that, it’s probably some setting on their ph, I did advise them to use a laptop. Wilco said he doesn’t use anything but his ph, Sarge said he’d check in from home at some point. Two great Flap vets, I hope they find their way back……

    • Flavor said, on November 20, 2020 at 4:57 pm

btw, they can access the Flap they just can’t post.

  18. Flavor said, on November 20, 2020 at 4:58 pm

I have the next 8 weeks off from work, I will tackle the posting issues at wordpress if they are rampant, let me know…

  19. unca_chuck said, on November 20, 2020 at 5:24 pm

Can they get in thru wordpress? I I have the same problem. can get in the regular way but can’t post on my phone unless I go to the stripped down version on wordpress.

  20. zumiee said, on November 20, 2020 at 5:51 pm

    What Chuck said.
I too get in on my phone by going through the WordPress website.

    • zumiee said, on November 20, 2020 at 5:55 pm

On my laptop I can still post the normal way.

  21. snarkk said, on November 20, 2020 at 6:10 pm

I haven’t been able to post from my phone for months.
One day I could, next day I could not.
    I’ve given up trying …

  22. Flavor said, on November 20, 2020 at 6:38 pm

ok, I have some time now to deal with this (after I start injecting my cat with insulin 2 X day on monday). It shouldn’t be like this, I’ll get wordpress to fix it.
