A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Re-Building Our Pitching Empire

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 24, 2020

I’m sure SF wasn’t even on the radar for an established post season performer like Charlie Morton. But 1 year 15 million is something Z should be spoon feeding us. Not Gausman for 1 year 19 million.

Another shot in the books for good ‘ol Carson this morning and both of us feel like pros at this already. 🙂

That SJ stabbing at Grace Baptist is about 30 yards behind my old fraternity house at State…which against the vast opposition by the alumni they sold the old house because the active chapter was shut down due to some trumped up hazing/drinking/skirt chasing allegations which was par for the course for 50-60 years the chapter existed. I have not seen any details of the incident yet…

Story in Chron today said suspect arrested, 2 dead 3 injured. “…took place at its winter homeless shelter…which operates in the church gymnasium and basement” according to Rev. David Robinson.
Can’t get to whatever is on SJ Merc, subscription only these days.

Ah good for Flav and Carson, adjusting and adapting to new circumstances. Best luck with phone; friend of mine just got nice deal saving few hun trading in old Apple one for brand new and got son to do the transferring of data etc.

I think it’s unfair to rag on college coaches (even Harbs) with underperforming programs for their inability to do the same. They haven’t forgotten basics and can still recruit, but other circumstances are just too odd for everyone to be at their best. With all the disruptions even in places where football is king, and remember Alabama just elected a former coach to Senate, there are still wild ups and downs for isolations and quarantines.
Want to read more about why Clemson coach is so pissed at Florida State.

David Shaw beats Cal this week and gets Ax back, lotta stuff related to 0-2 start (same as Cal) is forgiven.

    • Flavor said, on November 24, 2020 at 7:34 am

David Shaw will not be beating Cal this week.

  3. Flavor said, on November 24, 2020 at 7:43 am

Gianthead, what’s your plan for work in 2021?

  4. willedav said, on November 24, 2020 at 7:51 am

Killion has story on front page of Sporting Green re: Stanford dropping 11 varsity sports/240 athletes from July, where some of more famous alums such as Luck Azzi Mussina Wie J Mendoza and others signed letter (from all current varsity sports teams) stating they hope admin reconsiders. Apparently no one from admin reached out to them and they’re very disappointed.

Cool to see Mr. Goff, who had illustrious career at Cal, have last laugh on Brady last night.

    • Flavor said, on November 24, 2020 at 7:55 am

it was awful what Stanford did with those sports. If you have a 37 billion dollar endowment what exactly are you saving it for?

    • unca_chuck said, on November 24, 2020 at 8:40 am

I remember Jeff Kent single-handedly saving Cal softball a while back. His sister was a star player there.

Good job, Flav. Lucky for me, my wife does all the at home medical stuff for the pets. Shots (allergy and steroid), ear cleaning, oral meds etc. I get cleaning the litter boxes and dog crap in the yard and I’m ok with that.

Now it’s the Reds feeling the payroll squeeze. MLBTR lead article has them dangling Sonny Gray. So Blake Snell is not the only top starter being placed out there to see if anyone bites. Writer of the article noted that Zaidi was with the A’s when Gray first emerged. Shoppertunities are showing up all over the map as teams looking at Budget matters look to see if they can snag young and quality low-budget players for a star they may no longer be able to afford.

    • xoot said, on November 24, 2020 at 9:40 am

Zaidi may remember how the a’s overworked young Sonny — making him the ace too soon — and then let him go when his arm nearly blew out.

  7. willedav said, on November 24, 2020 at 10:06 am

Can’t see Z springing for expensive SPs, especially if he has to trade quality low budget players that are going to be key to any future resurgence. At least not this off season anyway.

    • Flavor said, on November 24, 2020 at 10:09 am

would I want Z to trade for Snell? Absolutely. But do i want him to pay what it would cost to get him? Fuck no. Keep our core studs, the few that we have, in tact.

  8. alleykat69 said, on November 24, 2020 at 10:18 am

“David Shaw will not be beating Cal this week”
Nobody should be beating anybody as they should shut down College Football games.
With over 90% of California in purple restrictions and curfews why do they continue to play when the young players and students continue to spread the virus daily?

    • Flavor said, on November 24, 2020 at 10:32 am

yes, it’s stupid. Fucking half the Ravens team has Covid and they still haven’t canceled the Thurs game. Insane.

      • zumiee said, on November 24, 2020 at 11:04 am

Making the 49ers play that Thursday night game when they were depleted by Covid was brutal.

      • unca_chuck said, on November 24, 2020 at 12:00 pm

Yup. Even without fans in the stands, the NFL got away from moving games to different days because it affected ratings. So they aren’t moving shit these days. Get ’em in the books come hell or high water.

  9. djloo27 said, on November 24, 2020 at 12:16 pm

Zumiee….. Thanks for explaining the moon thing on the previous thread.
I wonder if that Carl Hubbell telescope can actually prove it…

  10. Bozo said, on November 24, 2020 at 12:23 pm

Steroids are being used in some of the Covid treatments, does anyone know if the NFL is allowing it for their players?

I am surprised the NFL is still functioning, I gave it a few weeks at best. As far as the Giants I agree with Flavor i don’t want to get rid of any young players that can be productive for years. Z is gonna have to pay some to get pitchers here but a huge contract doesn’t make much sense at this point. I still wish we would go younger for the most part.
Carson must be a great cat. My cats have a second sense when it’s time for medication or the vet. They see a needle and they are gone. Even feeding them liquid meds is a challenge. I always win but at the expense of them feeling that I have been very traitorous.

  12. sandog said, on November 24, 2020 at 1:14 pm

My buddy likes to say that the NFL is TV show. You get paid good money, go out there and entertain people.
Not sure I agree, but I love a good hot take.
Morton for 15 mil is great value. I’m sure he was only considering teams who had a chance at winning it all—which rules us out.
I am fired up for his year though. 4 big contracts coming to an end and I’m even down with the farewell tour aspect of it all. Not expecting much in terms of wins and losses, but feeling a lot better about the future. We’re gonna have some dough on hand before long. I just wonder if Zaidi will spend it????

    • djloo27 said, on November 24, 2020 at 1:24 pm

Monster SS FA class after 2020 season.
Crawford will be available for peanuts.
See where I’m going with this?

      • willedav said, on November 24, 2020 at 2:20 pm

IF he’s not extended. Could happen with Posey too. I think option is $3 mil

      • djloo27 said, on November 24, 2020 at 4:20 pm

        Sorry, meant after 2021 season…

      • unca_chuck said, on November 24, 2020 at 6:39 pm

If? there is no way in heaven, hell, or Houston that Crawfish gets extended.

      • djloo27 said, on November 24, 2020 at 7:24 pm

Lindor, Baez, Story, Seager, Correa and Crawford all FAs for 2021.
Craw could get the Pence treatment – 1 year/$2-3mil?

  13. willedav said, on November 24, 2020 at 2:22 pm

Buyout is $3 mil for Posey, team option $22 mil for 2022.

  14. Flavor said, on November 24, 2020 at 2:42 pm

develop your own pitchers, get the best years out of those arms while you control them, then let them go in free agency. That has always been the best plan. Now, if you fuck up the development of them that’s on you and then you need to go the less preferred route. In my mind I just always think a pitcher hitting free agency is about to blow his arm out. That is a LOT of innings on that arm when you go all the way back to the first time they started pitching

    • Wayne Simon said, on November 24, 2020 at 3:33 pm

Unless we are paying extra for seats, or merchandise, or the baseball package, I could care less if they pay a guy 24 million instead of 18 million. Get the best players the team can afford. The goal at the highest level of all professional levels, is to win. In the majors if you win, you can assure your fan base. Not just the loyals that will follow the team no matter what, but the fan base that loves to be connected to a winner. There are a lot of those people out there.

      • Flavor said, on November 24, 2020 at 7:36 pm

the problem with that approach is that ownership doesn’t care about hits and misses. They have a payroll and they don’t go over it. It was stupidly run up over the last 8 years, mostly as a way to pay off guys for past WS success but it was also a lazy way to Gm by just locking up spots long term and thinking the job was done. Z isn’t going to GM that way but he’s still dealing with an ownership group that isn’t going to just right blank checks to fix mistake signings. And the easiest way to make a mistake signing is to sign a big ticket FA pitcher.

I wouldn’t be stunned to see Panik and Duffy back in Giant uniforms before their careers are done.
They even brought Frandsen in for a look a few years ago…

    • Carstie Clausen said, on November 24, 2020 at 4:02 pm

Kinda had that feeling about Duffy the other day when I learned of his current status. Not so sure about Panik…at least no intuitive hits.

  16. alleykat69 said, on November 24, 2020 at 5:21 pm

Why can’t the Giants stop frustrating the Flap ferchrissakes..
The latest stupid thought is they’re interested in Jon Lester? Stop dumpster diving on washed up pitchers , when this shit ever going to end??Fuck why don’t they bring back Bartolo Colon why they are at it??

And in other news..Gotta love these NY Football teams, we all know how shitty the Jets are with Adam Gase and they still won’t fire him at 0-10 with brain dead ownerships, but now atleast the NY Giants( do know how to fire someone)and gutless HC Joe Judge just fired his OC Colombo after the 2 got into a fight and Colombo kicked his Ass supposedly and got fired on the spot! What a chicken shit Coach Judge is..,

    • Carstie Clausen said, on November 24, 2020 at 8:12 pm

Lester: Dumpster-dive, reclamation project # 4,732-L. ERA of 5.16 for Wrigleys last season. High level of hard-contact balls. 37 Y.O. Yeah, maybe at a couple million, if Z & H are stuck with tightwad ownership in a major market and a fan-base now used to success and anxious to get back in the game,

      • Winder said, on November 24, 2020 at 10:34 pm

Just more dead weight to take up a spot. IMO. We just gotta draft more pitchers and the pickups we do make should still have active arms. There should be a few on the scrape heaps. This is gonna take some time.

  17. willedav said, on November 25, 2020 at 7:32 am

Unc, here’s why I think there is an “if” to whether Giants let Crawford walk or not.
#1 he hit very well last season in 60 games. OPS was .792 with archways closed he hit 5 bombs in 90 ABs at home. Road OPS was over .800 with almost .500 slugging. Overall slugging equal to that of Solano.

#2 lack of in house replacements. Robertson got all of 20 ABs and might not even make roster out of ST. Dubon is only other guy currently on roster that can play SS, but he isn’t much of a hitter yet. In close to same amount of ABs as Crawford, he had half as many XBHS, and 4 HRs all season. vs. 12 doubles and 8 HRs for Crawford. Luciano and Wilson haven’t even played A ball yet and are at least 2 years away, so distinct lack of options for 2022.

#3 Still a solid defender. Most teams are willing to sacrifice some offense for D at that position and he is still more than capable. Kapler seems sold on Dubon as his every day CF so that’s where he’s gonna get most reps. As a replacement SS I don’t see that working out well defensively.

  18. unca_chuck said, on November 25, 2020 at 8:34 am

Yeah, you are probably right. As much as I want them to move on, there aren’t many other options but dumpster diving next year.
