A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Thanks

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 26, 2020

Sure, it’s easy to say this has been a terrible year, but I always ascribe to the take that you should appreciate what you have…….because it could always be worse. For instance…..

My mom and my step dad got Covid 6 weeks ago…..but they recovered.

Katie’s grandpa got diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer……but the treatments have shrunk his tumors by 75%.

Carson got da diabetes……but he’s get his insulin and he’s still alive.

My daughter turns 18 tomorrow…….and I have a lot of mixed feelings about that one.

I could go on and on. Bottom line is that I am thankful for my family, my job and everyone I work with, my incredible friends and even my country too though my belief in her has taken a hit over the last 4 years.

And of course for this place, The Flap. How wonderful it is that we can click a button and go to a place that makes us feel happy, connected and valued. In times like these we search for things to believe in. Places to go where we can appreciate, even for a moment, something good in the world. I appreciate and am thankful for all of you, you guys have gotten me through more than you know just by being here every day……..

Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving to all.

interesting stat take: last November we had 911 unique visitors click on the Flap. This November it’s 1463 and there’s still a few days left in the month. That’s a substantial jump. I wonder what the change has been? Usually, if the team is playing well we see a lot of hits that year even in the off season. But that obviously isn’t it.
Maybe people are here more because of Covid and they’re home with nothing else to do? The last few months are in line with the same months from 2019 except November which is way up.
    Thoughts?

Ha “home with nothing else to do” well yes but this is such fantastic interesting place to be.

Thx for that Atlee clip. Had 2 strikes on Lynn and then hung the breaking ball. Other than Rice bomb he wasn’t hit all that hard–Dawson misplayed single into triple and Sax dropped throw that would have cut down Carew at 2b after one his typical slash singles to LF.

Saw some great college b-ball last night and more on today, plus Del Mar and of course football. I have to look it up but I do remember as kid one T-G the Lions thrashed Bart Starr and Green Bay. Seem to remember awesome pass rush, Alex Karras days maybe. Fun fact about Lions–secondary guys all had names that started with L—Dick LeBeau Gary Lowe Yale Lary (awesome punter) and Dick “night train” Lane HOF corner.

    • willedav said, on November 26, 2020 at 7:40 am

1962. Pack were defending champs, 10-0 at time and Lions sacked Starr first play of game and 11 times including for a safety and led 26-0 before 2 late meaningless TDs, final 26-14. Only game Pack lost all season, going 13-1 and winning title again under Lombardi.

    • Lurker John said, on November 26, 2020 at 7:51 am

Sax dropped a lot of balls in his career and ended up getting the yips with his throwing too, IIRC. “Night Train” Lane, one of the great nicknames in NFL history.

    Happy Thanksgiving, Flappers.

Flav, please investigate a ketogenic diet for Carson. The diabetes can not only be managed, but reversed using a low carb diet, no meds, nothing. It works. Diabetes is a devastating disease long term and directly tied to all manner of horrible morbidities, including COVID-19. The good news is that it can be reversed by simply changing the way we eat. Completely. And it will work for your cat too.

    Cheers.

    • Lurker John said, on November 26, 2020 at 7:49 am

A good place to start is Dr. Berry’s videos:

      https://www.youtube.com/c/KenDBerryMD/videos

He has a playlist containing video directly related to treating diabetes with a low-carb diet.

    • Flavor said, on November 26, 2020 at 7:52 am

yes, the vet put him on insulin and a new diet. Luckily he likes the food. thanks for the video i will watch later.

      • Lurker John said, on November 26, 2020 at 8:32 am

With the right diet he can be med free. I take it Carson is your cat. I didn’t put the two together. I treated a diabetic cat for 5 years and wish I knew then what I know now. Sam needed insulin and ultimately subcutaneous fluids twice daily, which was hard on both of us. He ended up dying of kidney failure. That was a very rough day for me.

Cats are obligate carnivores. The best thing you can do for him is stop feeding him any dry food and get him as close to an all-meat diet as you can. Grains and cats do not go well together and, unfortunately, almost all commercial foods, including prescription diets, contain grains in some form or another, which is the worst thing you can feed a diabetic cat. Unfortunately, most vets are as clueless about nutrition as most MD’s are.

      • xoot said, on November 26, 2020 at 2:21 pm

my favorite cat used to sing with joy when we fed him scraps of cooked meat, fish or fowl. excellent ploy. people at the table loved to hear him wail.

I heard that Finnerty’s closed for good. Say it ain’t so, Loo!!!

    • djloo27 said, on November 26, 2020 at 8:35 am

Where did you hear that, Chuck?
I see they tweeted on 11/24 that they’ll be posting an update soon.
      Probably will close I guess.
They can’t reopen, so what else could it be?
Converting to an LA team bar?

      • Lurker John said, on November 26, 2020 at 8:48 am

I saw it on FB yesterday.

Someone posted on Twitter a couple days ago that Finnerty’s was closing, saying the sources were employees’ posts on Facebook. I haven’t seen anything official yet from Finnerty’s. Sad if this is true, I’ve met up with Chi, Sandawg, Loo and Kokonuts there as well as seeing the World Series trophy after the ’12 and 14 titles. This was the most recent post from Finnerty’s:

Joel Rosario and Irad Ortiz Jr. both with mounts today at Del Mar, each riding in 4th and later in 6th Grade 111 $100K turf race.

    • Flavor said, on November 26, 2020 at 12:12 pm

Irad Ortiz Jr. is maybe the best rider in the country (IMO)

      • djloo27 said, on November 26, 2020 at 12:25 pm

        He’s a beast and a big-time “herder”.
Will always love him for bringing in Creator in the 2016 Belmont.
A well informed insider tells me Irad is totally cool, but brother Jose is a bit of a dick…

C Blacker pick of the day 5-1 shot Beguiled ridden by Flavien Pratt won the 4th ahead of 7-5 favorite under Joel Rosario mile and 16th on turf.

she’s a good handicapper and her husband is an underrated trainer. And they are both great people, they work their asses off. I think they have 3 kids, to raise them and deal with the rigors of horse racing, her husband is up at 3am every day……

Great Thanksgiving post, Flavor. The Cowboys v. the DC Indigenous on tv. Pretty funny. My son’s longtime girlfriend is indigenous. She is, she will occasionally point out, no more native “american” than she is “indian.” Fair point. Happy turkey day, Flappers.

interesting note about my mom— her husband decided to go on a fishing trip to Wyoming 6 weeks ago and took a plane to get there. He came back with Covid and gave it to her. They both recovered but she still hasn’t gotten back taste or smell after 6 weeks. Might never get it back again, her Dr. says

wow Gonzaga was impressive, scoring 102 on Kansas. Jayhawks got 92 of their own and have helluva team, tremendous game.

Flav that’s so unfortunate for your mom and step Dad. I still see many joggers walkers cyclists on creekside walk without masks. I’d sent email to retired friend of mine who did host scaled down TG yesterday. She replied back and ended it with, “Willie don’t go shopping tomorrow.”

  19. willedav said, on November 27, 2020 at 7:21 am

Irad Ortiz did win the stakes race #6 at Del Mar too. It was long, mile and 3/8 on turf and he came from behind btw horses with the favorite in last furlong to win.

    • Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 9:30 am

like any other great jockey, and this would happen to Russell Baze all there time, he gets bet every horse he’s on even if they don’t have a chance to win. So he will burn some money. But one thing you get from Irad is a great ride, every time, often a HOF ride. He’s incredible. Horse may not be good enough but the ride can never be questioned.

  21. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 9:54 am

non-racing people always say there would be no horse racing without betting. I shut them down by saying “horse racing is a huge sport in parts of the Middle East and gambling isn’t allowed.” I can now also add to that answer “and WillieD loves it and he’s not betting either.”

    • djloo27 said, on November 27, 2020 at 10:14 am

I know what you mean, Flavor but the statement is still correct – at least in this country.

  22. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 10:24 am

this is shocking futility after the Montana draft

  23. willedav said, on November 27, 2020 at 10:35 am

Should be some great QB options out there for this off season draft. Guys can come in nowadays and be successful right away in today’s game. Lot of spread offenses, short crossing patterns quick outs and rules that favor receivers and QBs quite a lot.

Hey Ortiz Jr. and Rosario have bunch of mounts today at DM. 7th is $200 K stakes race mile and half on turf.
Ms. Blacker is fun to listen to and very insightful; I enjoy the post parade stuff at DM quite a lot. the other gal on site there is hot, Brittney Eurton, daughter of trainer Peter Eurton, but her interviews are kind of sappy and she talks too fast. And rarely gives any meaningful prerace tips.

  24. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 10:53 am

  25. willedav said, on November 27, 2020 at 2:19 pm

same trainer R Baltas (Kentucky?) has won 3 of first 4 races at DM. Riders include Abel Cedillo Irad Ortiz jr and Manny Franco who rode for him successfully in stakes races in Kentucky. Impressive

    • Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 2:28 pm

i’m not sure where Baltas main barn is located but he’s a staple in Southern Ca.

      • Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 2:29 pm

but guys like Baltas are moving their horses all over the country to get away from the stupid rules and small fields in Ca….

  26. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 2:52 pm

Stanford and Cal are both terribly average. The Pac 12 has become a wasteland

  27. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 3:19 pm

lol, I am rooting for neither of these dudes to die in the ring

  28. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 3:21 pm

Irad currently 10-1 on the 2 horse in the upcoming 7th at Del Mar. I bet that horse hits the board (WillieD 1/2/3 is “the board”) and will be betting WPS on principal just to prove a point of what a stud jockey he is and 10-1 on him is a gift. (I normally would play the trifecta here but didn’t handicap this race. WPS a much easier bet considering I’m just betting him alone to hit the board.

  29. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 3:37 pm

he finished 6th about 2 lengths off the winner. But did you see what he did there? Saved all the ground, closed on the rail, that is what a smart jockey does. Horse wasn’t good enough.

  30. willedav said, on November 27, 2020 at 3:37 pm

C Blacker’s pick Arklow under Joel Rosario wins #7 Grade II stakes race on turf . East coast riders continue to do well at DM.

    • Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 3:51 pm

it was a fantastic ride by Rosario. If he doesn’t make that early move either the 4 or 8 probably beat him.

  31. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 3:37 pm

bad jockeys go wide on the turns. That’s a simple way to judge them but it’s accurate. Good jockeys understand the importance of saving ground.

  32. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 3:56 pm

Baltas vs Baffert in the next race. Two titans. WTF does Sandi Gann have a horse in this race for? Hmmmmm…..

  33. willedav said, on November 27, 2020 at 4:16 pm

Stanford starting to move ball on offense. Up 24-17 in 4th, pin Cal back on 4 yd line.

    • Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 4:29 pm

David Shaw is absurd. He punted on Cal’s 34 yard line. He’s afraid of his own shadow I fucking hate him

  34. willedav said, on November 27, 2020 at 4:43 pm

whoa Cards block tying extra point kick after Cal drives 90 yds for TD. 24-23.

    • willedav said, on November 27, 2020 at 4:48 pm

then Cal blows onside kick by going offsides, and kicking ball out of bounds. Had a muffed punt earlier that led to short field TD by Stanford.

      • willedav said, on November 27, 2020 at 4:50 pm

Oaktown running back Austin Jones from Bishop O’Dowd seals it with first down run. Cards get Ax back, Cal remains winless at 0-3.

    • Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 4:50 pm

she was bouncing around into the first turn but she settled that horse nicely on the back stretch, got a slow half, and was able to finish the job. It was a good ride from her

  36. Flavor said, on November 27, 2020 at 4:49 pm

Flemms doing Oregon Oregon St game with Rod Gilmore. Beavs running back Jermar Jefferson goes 82 for score first time he touches ball. Last week vs. Cal he did same thing with early 75 yd score and 196 on ground.

Craig, your 10:24am about Niners’ QB drafts is interesting. Giovanni Carmazzi. I know everyone here hates Tom Brady, but I remember seeing a video on YouTube about Brady’s journey from highschooler to SB champ and it was centered on the 6 QBs that were taken ahead (well ahead…) of Brady in that draft. Of course Brady grew up practically up the road from The Stick and after his time at Michigan, the whole family was hoping SF would draft him. Interview with Mariucci was pretty funny, as he kind of just shook his head and smiled as he thought about their drafting of Gio Carmazzi that year. He said (half jokingly) that if they’d gone with Brady instead of Gio, Mariucci would probably still be coaching the 49ers….
