Looking Around For Something To Watch
Weird sports time right now. I forced myself to watch the Big Game but otherwise have had very little interest in college football. No NBA right now. And with the Niners resigned to a lost year even the NFL is tough to get up for (thank God for Draft Kings). Quietly, there is always horse racing to be thankful for along with my new handicapping partner WillieD!
I guess I shouldn’t complain, we went 2 straight months earlier this year with nothing, nada, squat.
The way cases have skyrocketed here and elsewhere I suppose we could be headed back to that in January unless the vaccine starts getting rolled out.
Flavor, college football at least has bunch of QBs, mobile and accurate, that deserve watching in hope one of them ends up in red and gold.
College b-ball has begun, and some cupcakes like USF Dons have already pulled off upsets.
NBA will be playing exhibition games in couple weeks; many good players have changed places and everyone has new draftees. Think optimism is overblown but GS could be good again or at least watchable.
And yeah, del mar is fun. Do me a favor and explain what apprentice weight allowance is.
an apprentice jockey is a new jockey who has a license but is still learning. It’s like having a drivers permit. They give those jockeys a weight break of, I think 5-7 pounds. So if there’s a field of 8 horses and there’s one apprentice jock in there, seven jockeys will carry, say 122 pounds, and the apprentice jockey gets in at 117 pounds. Different races dictate the amount each horse carries. In Europe most of the races the jockeys carry like 135 pounds or so. I’m not 100% certain of how this works (Loo will know) but if a jockey weighs 110 pounds and they have to carry 122 pounds for that particular race, they will have an additional 12 pounds placed on their saddle with weights.
Anyway, the weight break is appealing to trainers who want a little lighter load for their horse to carry around and it makes them more likely to hire an apprentice rider. I don’t know when you lose your apprentice riding tag, I think you get to ride for a year or something before they take it away.
Flav’s 2:52 yesterday,” Cal and Stanford terribly average/Pac 12 has become wasteland” unfortunately all too true. Last night watched perennial bottom feeder Oregon St. come back from down 31-19 in 3rd Q to beat rival (and one of league’s only top rated teams) Oregon 41-38 sending league further back into oblivion of any rankings. Fun skill players abound, but not on locals.
my issue with college football is that too many games are getting canceled, too many players are getting covid. And the programs are unable to prepare for these games the way they need to. It’s also painfully obvious that the powers that be don’t give a shit about these kids. That’s hard for me to support in times like these.
mm college programs of Power 5 schools are so huge–50+ scholarship players plus walk ons and all the assistants yada yada.
plenty of professional teams, with supposedly responsible adults, have had their issues too. I think the cancellations are unfortunate but I support that leagues at least are following the rules and not just letting them go because they want to play.
More I read the more i’m upset the Clemson coach went off–the decision not to play that game resided with medical personnel of Florida St., where local rules were more stringent than those of Clemson.
Again, it’s unfortunate there are so many conflicting policies (like in America as a whole) but if a medical person with scientific background says No this isn’t safe, then so be it and players et al live to play another day.
as you know, I like to get some action on games. I can’t invest the time necessary to handicap a game if I don’t know how the team is preparing for the game, who will be getting shut down because of Covid or if the game will even play at all. So, for me, investment in college football this season, monitary or otherwise, isn’t happening
Further irrelevance of Pac 12—UCLA mens b-ball, preseason favorites to win the league, had to go triple OT to down the Pepperdine Waves last night. this after getting stomped in their opener by San Diego St., who had lost their top scorer from last year Malachi Flynn to NBA.
Pepperdine is coached by Lorenzo Romar, who imo generally has done good job wherever he has been. But, when he was in NBA and played for Warriors my buddies could not stand the guy
It has been ‘the show must go on’ with just about all sports this year. Teams are using 2nd and 3rd string players as starters which are continually being shoved in front of TV audiences. The almighty dollar is talking very loud. This pandemic has turned everything around. To me college football is one of the greatest events in sports, but this year even my love for the pac 12 has turned to indifference.
Florida QB Trask with 56 yd TD pass to Kyle Pitts, who ran away from DB last 30 yds. Hard to top Florida 9the state as whole) for skill players.
Loo will remember #25 Frank Pitts of SB champ Chiefs, from Southern U another one of Stram’s finds in black colleges. His grandson is Brandon Bolden of Pats.
Killed the Vikes all day with that reverse…
Jesus.
And this is why I rarely tune in to WFAN.
Some folks say Trask is high on the 49ers radar along with Mac Jones now? I still like the kid from BYU Zac Wilson who’s more mobile in a league with what’s it’s going too(Murray,Wilson,Allen,Action Jackson) you have to get this type QB to develop if your the Niners, evasiveness/speed/arm strength is the new NFL not the conventional drop back passer..
Trask did grow up in Texas, not highly regarded out of HS either. BYU has been lighting up everyone including Mtn West power Boise St., whom Jose St takes on tonight on their blue field.
Jose-Boise game cancelled.
Baltas and Ortiz Jr. combine for another W in first at DM. 3 big stakes races today later in card.
You’re turning into a degenerate!
Lulz 😂
seems like good company.
An apprentice degenerate…
Flavius in 7th #12 going off as favorite in stakes race.
Chad Brown/Irad Ortiz Jr won the 5th on turf.
8-1 shot Count Again overtakes him from outside in stretch under Juan Hernandez who has done well on turf races here too. Great race lot of horses in contention.
degenerate lulz.
As Flip Wilson used to say, the devil made me do it.
they came home fast. I thought Flavius had it but the 5 had more momentum in the last 100 yards
When I was a kid one of the best things about the big game was the bonfire at lake lagunita. It was really something.
Yeah Winder… I use to go to those at well at lake lagunita and the bonfires 🔥 and partying were great 👍
I actually use to sneak into this small lake( more like just a bayou swamp) across from lagunita with a small dingy we put in the back of his truck and fished for smallmouth bass.Caught a few too! It was alittle eerie early in the morning with some fog on the water and navigating around stumps and trees.Man I still can’t believe we never got busted by a game warden!!
Speaking of competitive events: Claire, a Scottish deerhound, won the 2020 National Dogshow.

Best in Show was a great movie, right?
Yes, Best in Show is a cool movie. In the great tradition of fictional documentaries like Spinal Tap.
Believe it or not I was watching that with the fam on Thanksgiving,
Spectacular movie. The Spinal Tap of dog show movies.
What’d she go off at?
WillieD wants to know…
Pyfer nailed on the wire. Not the first or last time she’ll be nailed. She gave that horse a good ride tho, even in defeat. Earlier in her career she was floating her tired horses in the stretch endangering horses and jockeys in her path. She is learning
in 9th Grade I $300 K Hollywood Derby top 4 horses ridden by 2 left coast/2 east coast.
#2 Rispoli
#13 Prat
#8 Ortiz Jr
#10 Rosario
Irad again in the finale. He is incredible.
great day of racing and that was really cool. Prat almost got him from way back too.
Broncos have no QBs available to play tomorrow…
Maybe Elway will come out of retirement..
If not sign Kappy for this one, it’s only pertinent this screwed up year..
I think I read where a 3rd string rb is gonna get the call.
The 49ers can’t practice or play game in Santa Clara for the next two weeks. They are gonna have to find some local high school to practice and play their games, hopefully Kezar. But since there are no fans it doesn’t make much difference
I am not even gonna try and set my FF teams this week. There are just to many players out.
Broncos QB Hinton tomorrow? WR off the practice squad? “Hinton for the Winton” gonna be the chant in Denver streets tomorrow.
Wonder if Niners could take over Coliseum…or if Al would rise up and stop it.
this ruling from Santa Clara county also affects Jose St and Stanford. Last time this happened Cards went up road to Woodside HS to practice. No idea where either could play a game. No fans sure but you still have to host 2 full teams and have proper medical facilities.
SD told me that San Diego St had to play home game all the way up in Carson, 2 hours away.
Does the Vegas stadium have Al’s “eternal flame”? I haven’t seen it on tv.
As to the E Coli and the 9ers, if that scheme took one step forward I can imagine the grandstanding quasi-liberal mayor of Oakland reveling in a press conference where she proudly prohibits it. (Thank the lard she’s too white to be in the running for the open senate seat.)
Xoot it’s a phony looking flame 🔥 setup at the top of one of the end zones, looks cheesy to me..
is Kezar still standing? Serious question and I’m not gonna google it
They have been using Kezar for HS games. It was there last time I checked.
If only the Broncos had Sweetness.
I think payton was one of the toughest if not thee toughest person ever to play the game.
Jim Brown might have something to say about that Winder..
Atleast that’s probably what defensive players thought when he planted them on they’re backs running right thru them…
I don’t know who Jake Paul is, but apparently he just beat the crap out of ex-Knick Nate Robinson…
I was at Kezar a coupe months ago. Here’s a couple pics.
Hadn’t been here since 1969…
