Don’t Mess With The Grave

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 10, 2020

New fav follow on twitter is this guy: https://twitter.com/ryanfagan

He’s not funny or anything, but he opens up a pack of baseball cards from a particular year each day, takes a pic of a dozen or so of them and says “tell me your favorite story about one of these players.” He mostly just focuses on the early 90’s for some reason—possibly the lamest time for baseball cards. But it’s still a fun go.

Man, some of you guys with the open disrespect of The Grave Duggar must really like tempting fate. Duggar might not have all the tools some of you elitists look for in a player. But he’s got that nickname. And that should be enough to cull the respect he deserves.

Mock the Grave Duggar at your own peril. Kat is probably rethinking some of his comments right now after I warned him he’d have to sleep with one eye open for the remainder of his life……

Unfortunately, speed only guys are dying breed. Where’s Billy Ham these days? Jerrod Dyson? Stros played a similar guy some last year, Myles Straw…
One of the questions that always comes up is whether borderline guys still have options or not. Unaware what Duggar’s status is, but going in his chances of making team out of ST are slim and none.
Good news though—ESPN had regular coverage (early AM iirc) of KBO this season, so maybe next year…

I think Mike Axisa used to do something similar with baseball cards, with a former player too, each of them opening up a pack and talking about them.

Myles Straw numbers: 2019 128 ABs slash line .269/.378/.343 for slightly below league average .721 OPS 1 WAR player stole 8 bags 1 CS.
    2020, um : .32 ABs .207/.244/.256 for even .500.minus WAR of 0.5.
Rundown I read on Stros for 2021 said if they don’t sign Springer back they will be looking desperately for CF help such as JBJ of Sox or David Dahl of Rox.

I actually slept like a baby last night Flavor, I would think Duggar is facing the one eye 👁 open scenario along with his one ear pressed to his cell phone 📲 in bed anticipating that late night call from a giants rep saying thanks for your non productive services ( oops meant to say services) but it’s time for the organization to go in a different direction.

    • Flavor said, on December 10, 2020 at 10:42 am

Duggar is the one sleeping like a baby just waiting for his shot, the shot he knows he’ll take advantage of. You might want to sleep with 2 eyes open when the night gets darkest. That’s when he comes for his non believers.

There was an article in the Athletic this morning that made it seem the minor league system was alive and well and should be in full gear by spring. What I gleaned from it was that any player that doesn’t quite fit in with the low A, High A, AA, and AAA, will be sent to the Arizona instructional league. And that probably means the most recent draftees and probably players that need to tweek their game. But it all does sound promising.

  7. sandog said, on December 10, 2020 at 10:59 am

Sounds like we gathered up some minor league talent in the Rule 5 draft today.
I think Gausman for 19 mil is going to be the biggest splash we make this off-season, The rest will be Wisler and Rule 5 type scrounging. Maybe a couple of bigger names, but definite value signings in the 3-5 mil range.
    And I’m good with that.

  8. Carstie Clausen said, on December 10, 2020 at 11:26 am

Rule 5 lowdown: NO Giants prospects taken. We got one: Dedniel Nunez, a ’96 model the Mets may have hoped would not go, as his High-A 2019 stats were not memorable and thus Sally League A-ball in fewer IPs would be overlooked. Best first: In the Sally, Nunez threw 22.2 innings, giving up a grand total of 9 Ernies on a massive 14 hits and all of two taters for an ERA of 4.03.

Here’s the kicker which caught my eyes and presumably those of the Z&H vultures: Over those 22.2 he surrendered a massive total of three (3) walks as against 33 strikeouts. Yes, you read that right, a positive ratio of 11-1. This added up to a nearly invisible WHIP of 0.761, with 5.6 H/9IP, 1.2 BB/9 and 13.3 K/9.

Mets were hoping his high-A metrics would get all the attention, but some prowlers dig deep: ERA of 4.53–very low-mediocre. WHIP of 1.370–vaguely tolerable. 59 hits and 3 HRs over 57 IP–so-so okay. Twenty bases on balls versus 61 whiffs. (not quite to A-ball standards but reasonably respectable).

So here’s my skinny. Rule 5 as we all know means he needs to stay on the 25-man for the full season. Okay, so S.F. may or may not be in playoff contention, so it’s time for a Hail-Mary looksee at a relatively low-risk shot at a #5 starter, or more likely long-man/mop-up reliever—even though his career has been as a S.P.

It probably means once again carrying a 13 man staff, leaving only a 5-man bench—but versatility there is good. From A and A+ ball in 2019 means maybe he played winter-ball or was in a developmental situation last year. Hope so, as otherwise a jump from A+ with mediocre performance to the 25-man is like a shot in the dark. But our Vultures are like riverboat gamblers playing with house-money. So fire one off. Scouting reports had to be positive. If this one doesn’t show some positive results by mid-season and IF the team is not wading in mediocrity; they may pass him back to the Mutts for $50 grand and say “thanks for the loan”.

At age 24 Nunez may have plenty of upside and though a long-shot, worth the potential loss of a game or two giving him an extended tryout.

      Good stuff, Carstie.
Hey–it sounds like Wisler could be one of those old school fireman guys you talk about, Get that slider grooved and go 3-4 innings if necessary.

Thanks, San. Will be off the Flap for the next 3 days or so. After more than 4 years, this evening I will get a ride up north to see my no-longer livable old house–maybe shed a few tears—grab a few things I need—see a couple of friends after gathering up some more Diamond Willow for the sculpture projects—then head back to the Twin Cities and log-in once again. In the meanwhile, “GO GIANTS” and keep on flapping.

Hang in there Stix. I know it’ll be a tough trip for ya but hoping ya can have some fun while you’re there. Hey, I know you have your own favorite hangouts in Minneapolis, but may I suggest lunch at Mayslack’s lounge for that awesome garlic roast beef sammy they have. In my book, that’s some good eatin’. Take care Stix and safe trip.

This will be the 4th straight year the Giants have swooped up a pitcher in the rule 5 rule, and Fernandez,Bergen, and Jimenez have all flamed out due to an injury are non effective pitching. All sent back to there original Orq are resigned somewhere else.

Maybe this kid Nunez can stick, but it’s always tough to keep a rule 5 guy all year unless he’s pitching lights out are continues to have the upside there looking for.You just don’t want to weaken your bench, got the extra position backup that’s always needed.I personally like a 12 man pitching staff, 2 catchers,6 infielders, and 5 outfielders…

Though I like there thinking bringing in these flamethrowers from Venezuela , and also another ace in the hole could be hard throwing (100 mph) RHP Camilo Doval who’s on the 40 man, and the Giants are high on his expectations and will be given a good shot in ST ( if we have one?) to make the team.Hoping that Reyes Montreas makes it back strong too! Still hoping they sign closer Liam Hendricks 2/15 with an option?

Amen to that Stix. I hope you find some good wood and maybe an old trusty Griswold #9 you can take back with you.

Noticed some ads for T Hanks movie, “News of the World’. I read this very moving novel of journey through Texas post Civil War, great story written by Paulette Jiles. um, hope they don’t mess this up.

Belichik might want to check in with Shanahan who owns Rams lately.

  14. willedav said, on December 10, 2020 at 6:16 pm

Newton does this, trying to do it all and call his own number, which Rams stuffed.

  15. alleykat69 said, on December 10, 2020 at 6:20 pm

That was the dumbest 1st and goal calls I’ve ever seen!
How the hell was Newton allowed to call his own number and then just happy dance right into the teeth of the Rams defense and get stuffed.

    • Flavor said, on December 10, 2020 at 6:38 pm

Newton is an idiot. And for Belly to let that option even happen on 4th down suggests he isn’t the genius everyone thinks he is

Billy Ball is dead ☠️ in New England..
Stupid penalties, a runner in Cam Akers ballin for 150 plus yards, and even useless Jared Goff finds a nugget..

  18. djloo27 said, on December 10, 2020 at 7:47 pm

If not for dumbo Dee Ford lining up offside in the AFC title game 2 years ago, the Chiefs would be going for a 3-peat. They woulda beat the no show Rams by 40 in SB LIII…

    • Flavor said, on December 10, 2020 at 8:07 pm

Counting the ficticious 3rd chicken before even a second one has hatched? That’s some wild hubris Loo. And a bad omen for them in the upcoming SB

      • djloo27 said, on December 10, 2020 at 8:14 pm

No way I’m counting on it, Flav. That’s why I said “going for.”
I’m almost never confident in my teams – with good reason…

      • Flavor said, on December 10, 2020 at 8:17 pm

KC looks unstoppable this year mostly because no one else looks even remotely good enough to challenge them. Hey, pile them up when you can, that’s what the Niners did and you never forget that pileage. I’d bet against KC normally but Mahomes is so good going with the chalk this year might just be the way to go. Or, just not betting, I never bet the chalk. HAHA

    • Macdog said, on December 10, 2020 at 8:37 pm

Didn’t the Rams beat the Chiefs during the regular season that year?

      • djloo27 said, on December 10, 2020 at 8:40 pm

        Yes.
        And Onion beat Secretariat…

      • djloo27 said, on December 11, 2020 at 6:30 am

That was an epic game, Mac but the Rams flat out did not show up for one of the worst Super Bowls ever.
        KC would’ve buried ’em…

    • unca_chuck said, on December 10, 2020 at 9:09 pm

Yeah, I wonder what woulda happened had Ford not blown that. Maybe we beat Tennessee early this year.

RIP Deebo. This is cool , BTW.
