Feels almost a little normal seeing a Friday with college football, basketball and then NBA action tonight. If only things were normal…..

I got a little pep in my step after watching Frank Gore Jr. zig zag this one to The House. Great to hear that name on a call like this…..

    WillieD I’m assuming you’re tracking this……..

      Nah, waiting for Santa Anita.
Btw saw some more on the golf cart story–Yahoo talked to Ms Kerr who is playing LPGA Open this week, and apparently what happened was the cart she was in collided with another one in “total darkness” both she and caddie were thrown out of it onto the ground. She has 3 dislocated ribs, etc. And with aid of some painkillers did complete her round yesterday.

      • alleykat69 said, on December 11, 2020 at 9:43 am

Willied Remarkable story how 2 golf carts can crash like that but I can see it happening in total darkness, but why were they out there in that situation, just crazy?
I’ve followed Christie Kerr’s career , she even ranked number 1 for awhile, fiery competitor. IRight now I believe she’s holding her own in 10th place at one under, quite an accomplishment for someone in that much pain! Wish her the best!

I haven’t been keeping tabs on this Pyfer girl, but it can be big fun when an apprentice catches fire.
New York had Steve Cauthen-mania in 76-77.
Seemed like he won at least 3 every day culminating with the TC on Affirmed at age 18.
People stopped handicapping – they would just bet Cauthen on anything.
He was major sports news – even non-racing fans were buzzing about him.
Haven’t seen anything like that since…

Another casualty of Covid-19, Palo Alto Fish Market has temporarily closed after being around since 1976!(San Mateo Fish Market remains open with better outside seating available attraction on the bay waters, but like everywhere else, how long?before were all locked down permanently??
Man I used to go in there for not only dinners are just go to the bar but also to buy fresh crab 🦀 for Christmas dinners are New Years! Same goes for Steins Brewery in Mountain View shutting down for now..

“I have accepted the voluntary buyout that Hearst offered all Chronicle employees and will retire from daily journalism on Jan. 4.” From Hank Schulman in chron today. Takes potshot at critics, especially on social media, as one thing he won’t miss about his job.

    • zumiee said, on December 11, 2020 at 10:22 am

The number of tough questions Hank ever asked players, coaches, managers, or owners: ZERO.

      • willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 10:30 am

used to follow Giants beat writers game time threads sometimes on twitter. Hank’s was easily most insufferable and nasty compared to Pavlovic Shea or Baggs. Not gonna be missed.

    • xoot said, on December 11, 2020 at 10:58 am

Schulman spent half his time on twitter announcing which critic he’d just blocked and implicitly urging everyone else to shun that commenter, too. Ridiculously small-minded, as if he was the leader of a special club. He did have interesting things to say about why he always voted HOF for Bonds. Probably a complex guy. On the rare occasions when I sat near the press box during a game his loud voice could be heard during the first few innings telling funny stories. Baggarly could be seen off to the side, ignoring the bullshit, watching the game, typing on his laptop.

      • Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 11:23 am

great rundown. Baggs clearly looks and acts like he worked 10 X harder than the hot dog face stuffing Schulman.

  5. alleykat69 said, on December 11, 2020 at 10:54 am

Agree Hank is a babbling buffoon that won’t be missed.Same with Kamakawi sp? can’t stand that prick..

  6. djloo27 said, on December 11, 2020 at 11:05 am

Surprised how little attention the passing of Dick Allen received in the NY media.
    I didn’t see or hear a thing.
Phil Linz, famous for the Yogi Berra harmonica incident has also passed away…

    • sandog said, on December 11, 2020 at 11:19 am

Both guys got a lot of love on Twitter, and at least in the case of Linz there were links to some nice NY media articles.
Trivia question for you Loo—any anyone else:
2 other players bought harmonicas in Chicago with Linz, but chose not to break them out on the bus after getting swept 4 games at Comiskey. Who were they?

      • djloo27 said, on December 11, 2020 at 12:34 pm

I’ll only guess one, because I’m pretty sure they came up together and might’ve hung out – Tom Tresh?
I’d eliminate the big party guys like Mantle, Ford and Pepitone…

  7. Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 11:22 am

A lot to get to, wow.
    1) Steve Cauthen was more of a mysterious name to me than anything else. West coast, just getting into horse racing, but I definitely heard about him at the time.
    2) The Fish Market is a Palo Alto staple! Man, before my parents got divorced we went there every week for dinner (it seemed like). So Kat if you were there in the 70’s, good chance we were there at the same time.
    3) Agree with Zum. HS never asked a single tough question. All he ever did was defend the party line. At least Baggs challenges these guys now and again. I won’t miss HS for a second. In fact, he blocked me like a bitch on twitter for giving him the mildest of criticisms. He’s a snowflake.

    Probably been posted here before

    • James said, on December 11, 2020 at 12:47 pm

But maybe not all 5 versions of the image I just comically stumbled through.

      • sandog said, on December 11, 2020 at 1:00 pm

I’m intrigued. Post those as well!

  9. sandog said, on December 11, 2020 at 1:02 pm

@Loo–outstanding deduction!! Correct on all fronts.
According to the article I read the other day, Tresh and Tony Kubek also purchased harmonicas on that Chicago trip.

    • djloo27 said, on December 11, 2020 at 1:11 pm

Never heard that one before, Dog and that story’s been told and re-told a million times with some different accounts of how it went down…

  10. willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 1:12 pm

Flavor, just for fun I looked up Los Alamitos card…all quarter horse races 4 and half furlongs starting 6 PM tonight, and no Ms. Pyfer in any of the 8 races. ?

    • willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 1:20 pm

hmmn only found nightime card on horseracingnation but there is 1 PM daytime card…just turned on tvg race #2 coming up later.

      • willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 1:52 pm

Usual suspects among DM riders over there.

    • Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 1:43 pm

day racing is for t-breds only, nighttime they have another card for the quarters

      • willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 2:07 pm

got it thanks. Abel Cedillo wins 3rd there with Luxury Liner, 2-1 favorite for trainer S Miyadi.
        Tarantino won 9th at gulfstream.

Went to the Fish Market in SM not too long ago. Excellent chowder. The food is still top-notch. Since Vince’s shut down years and years ago, that is my next favorite seafood place on the Peninsula. My wife worked there in the early 80s when it was basically a front for selling large amounts of blow. Said it was wild. She has some crazy stories about her roommate who dated a pretty heavy duty coke dealer who was part of that action.

    • djloo27 said, on December 11, 2020 at 4:07 pm

I think the Giants have become a front for all that other shit they’re building out there…

  12. alleykat69 said, on December 11, 2020 at 4:13 pm

Wow didn’t know that Chuck. But I use to go to Vince’s all the time with my parents in the 70’s( it was there only seafood place they would go to)when it was more a legit operation lol 😂.Use to order being a wise guy kid the Abalone which was the bomb! My parents cringed 😬 at the price and said next time it’s fish sticks!!
One time I was with my aunt&uncle, my uncle was really hard of hearing and his voice was loud thinking nobody else can hear him so he asked the waitress is the Halibut fresh are frozen, fresh are frozen, fresh are frozen? She would politely say it’s always fresh and he would say what? and repeat himself again! I just wanted to crawl under the table from embarrassment!!

    • Winder said, on December 11, 2020 at 4:33 pm

Lol. That reminded me of my Grandfather. He was a retired postal worker and lived in San Francisco. He had a 53 chrysler and was blind as a bat. i hated to get into the car with him when I was little. I can’t even get into all the shit that other drivers gave him for one thing he drove slow all the time which is probably a good thing. A lot of residential areas in SF have some steep ass hills and he lived on one. It was an adventure whenever he took the car. I got to the point i would just crouch down in the seat so I wouldn’t have to see everyone flipping him off. i think I was around 8/9 when they finally took his licence.

Families are like a box of chocolates.
        Except they’re not as good…

  13. Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 4:14 pm

Pyfer gave a shit ride on the bet down favorite in the 5th. Ended up being even money. She had the horse sideways out of the gate, she was moving ALL over the place into the turn, you can’t ride like that and win. The horse was dead in the stretch.

    • willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 5:27 pm

did win 4th with 9-1 shot, barely holding off 4 and 7, for trainer R Baltas. Still has 7 lb weight allowance and I think there are other apprentices at LosAl beside Alex Centeno who was riding at DM. Rispoli was in an earlier race, didn’t notice if F Prat was riding.

      • Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 5:39 pm

She did. And she’s an apprentice so she’s learning. But she gets way too many good mounts, I FIRMLY believe it’s because she’s pretty hot and her family is a big deal in SOCal racing. That’s not cool in my book, apprentices should be given mounts based on their merit not on other shit.

i decided to go out in style with HS. What style is open to debate. I tweeted this to him from my burner account. You know what? Fuck this guy. He grifted his way through his job, he blocked people for no reason, followers he NEVER WOULD HAVE HAD without the job he had. All this fuck did was eat hot dogs, I say “later days, dumbass”

    • unca_chuck said, on December 11, 2020 at 5:32 pm

Oh snap! Too funny. I have to check out burner flavor now

      • Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 5:37 pm

It’s not as exciting as my main twitter handle. i just use it to follow all the accounts who have blocked me (HS, Lowell Cohn, Pavlovic, etc) AND all the NBA beat writers. Their late breaking news is critical to NBA DFS
Today’s post to HS was easily my most controversial from that account, he probably blocked me 2 seconds after he read it. Whatever, fuck him, he’s gone now anyway.

  15. unca_chuck said, on December 11, 2020 at 5:31 pm

Yeah, Winder, my grandma was horrible. Papa always had to have a Caddy. And that Caddy had to be a Coupe de Ville. The last one was a ’71 with the 20′ long doors. She could never just accelerate and hit a constant speed. It was accelerate, coast, accelerate, coast. Hit the brakes, coast, accelerate, hit the brakes, coast. It was like being in a 3 ton rowboat. We almost hit a train once, because she was always looking around at what everyone else was doing and not paying attention to what was in front of her.

    • willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 6:13 pm

one set of mine had an early 60s sedan de ville, monster. One year my Dad drove it up Hwy 49 to visit relatives along Yuba R, and didn’t quite negotiate all the way around one of the curves, leaving a dent in back fender.

    • Winder said, on December 11, 2020 at 7:36 pm

Yeah, I kinda felt sorry for my gramps. He could hardly see and he had some thick glasses but his real problem was his perception he just couldn’t drive straight. He would continually drift all over his lane and at time go into another one. Thank God he drove so slow that other people saw it coming and drove accordingly. I felt he was safe once he stopped driving but when he was behind the wheel he was dangerous.

  16. Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 5:41 pm

Didn’t Twinner like HS? He’d be giving me the business right now for that tweet…..

  17. Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 5:47 pm

This is actually the most I’ve ever seen this dude loosen up on twitter. Whatever, all his minions are giving it to me on my burner account right now.

    • Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 5:48 pm

all his fans like him because he’s a *nice guy*. At least to those who just read him and never question him. Do I feel like a dick for saying this to him? I mean he did just recently beat cancer. No, I don’t feel like a dick. He should have done his job better. He got paid to do a job he did in a perfectly ordinary fashion. Who is going to miss that?

now that idiot Pavlovic is piling on. Seriously, he’s in the same boat as HS just younger.

all these guys are going to be blocking me AGAIN because they’re complete pussies but I don’t give a fuck, this account is mostly just for following NBA beat writers

  23. zumiee said, on December 11, 2020 at 6:14 pm

    “Didn’t Twinner like HS?”

TF defended beat writers in general because, according to TF, beat writers have to be around the team everyday, and it’s unreasonable to expect them to harm their relationship to the team by reporting tough news about the team.
I see TF’s point, to a point. But at some point, a beat writer is also a journalist, not a member of the team PR dept. At some point, a journalist needs to be willing to risk some flack in the quest for truth. Baggs lost his TV gig because he reported a story other news media wouldn’t report. And Baggs is the one we, the readers, respect the most.
And Baggs wrote two very good books about the Giants.

    • Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 6:34 pm

it’s a regional thing. There’s no way beat writers in Philly or NY bent over the way the beat writers out here do.

  24. willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 6:22 pm

See, this stuff is real. You go Flav. Good for calling these clowns out.
the Warriors beat writer isn’t any better. He sticks up for their crummy drafts (and a starter I won’t mention) and glorifies reserve players that are strictly average garbage time guys. I get critical comments denied all the time on Chron. Hank, well known longtime company shill, is not going to be missed.
SF going back to Kezar days, has long hist of independent thinking fans critical of mgmt and players. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever.

    • Flavor said, on December 11, 2020 at 6:32 pm

thanks. Hey, how bout San Diego State last night? That must have been something you noticed. San Dawg, too

      • willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 6:49 pm

yeah they’re awesome, blasting ASU in their own building and now 2-0 vs. Pac 12.. Lot of fun talking with their distinguished grad and coach SD.

My boys from San Jose St. playing final regular season game tonight vs. one loss Nevada, in Vegas. Should be lot of offensive fireworks. Nevada QB Carson Strong is very good, and Vacaville product from Wood High. They have good running back that torched SJS for 160 yds last year in 41-38 W for Nevada wolfpack. Winner has leg up for shot at Mtn West conference title game

    • willedav said, on December 11, 2020 at 6:34 pm

the running back Toa Taua, is from Lompoc HS. There was a running back who returned kicks too in college from Lompoc who was really good…played for either UCLA or USC had pro career too. gotta see if I can remember/look this up.

San Jose St really has turned their program around under this new coach Brennan?
3-22 his first 2 years, won 5 last year and now undefeated at 5-0! They haven’t been 6-0 since 1939 that’s just 2 years before Pearl Harbor!
They are now leading Nevada 30-20 and just recovered a fumble by Nevada’s Toa Taua and have under 7 minutes to go.. They win there in the championship game and probably stay in Nevada cause they’re not allowed back to they’re stadium..

6-0 on to the Mountain West Championship game!
Down 20-7 at the half, they take the 2nd half kickoff to the house and never looked back shutting out the Wolfpack 23-0 zip! Great job 👏
Tyler Nevin 2 huge 69 yards( 1TD) run as they ran for 196 yards in the 2nd half
