NBA Baby! Bang! Bang!
Hello Tuesday. Right out the gate we got Dubs and Brooklyn. I think the Nets probably roll tonight, the Warriors really only has Steph and a bunch of guys who haven’t learned how to play with him yet. But Golden State will get much better as the year goes on and if Steph stays healthy they are definitely a playoff team…….
Listening to someone on the radio eulogizing Kevin Greene and he kept referring to him as a “sack artist.” That label has always made me LOL. Like, there’s nothing artistic about sacking the QB. Especially in Greene’s day, the goal was to pummel the QB with as much force as you could inflict. But no, they’re known as “sack artists.”
Interested to see new look Nets under Nash. Warriors are we’ll see how pieces will fit together team as well.
Have to admit great weekend plus Monday for Stanford teams. Football had nice comeback after blowing lead to win 48-47 in double OT over UCLA, their 4th straight that started with W over Cal. After that they spent rest of month on road to Washington and Oregon before going to SoCal to play. QB Davis Mills had great game and they will return skill players next year.
Womens b-ball swept LA schools on road with 61-49 W yesterday highlighted by another dunk by Fran Belibi. Yahoo had AP story with pic of it; they missed lot of close in shots and had 16 turnovers but held 10th ranked Bruins far below normal shooting and scoring numbers for best player and team.
Mens team beat outmanned CSU Bakersfield last night in ugly game where refs called 57 fouls and Stanford shot 44 free throws. This was played in Santa Cruz, where Saturday Cards broke 20 game losing streak by edging Arizona 78=75 for Coach Jerrod Haase to open league season with W.
I give athletes and staff lot of credit for their sacrifice in maintaining adherence to rules and protocols while all this is going on. It’s not like you can grab your buddies and go get burgers. Everyone is under restrictions, isolated and stuck in hotel rooms. UCLA womens coach mentioned players not able to visit families for Holidays before returning to play games around New Years.
Zach Wilson is playing tonight in the Del Boca Vista Bowl against UCF. Could be the Niners next QB.
4:00 on ESPN. Same time as the Warriors game.
Only thing I have about him would be how he performs vs. pressure, which doesn’t seem he’s faced very often this season. Look what happened to ND guy the second time around when Clemson played better D–got sacked often and wasn’t accurate, and they were down 31-3. The same thing happened to Wilson when they lost to that Coastal Carolina team, unable to generate near as much offense.
Lot of college teams aren’t good vs. passing offenses–look at all high scores even in SEC. QBs can hit wide open guys when they have time, fine. Pro game is lot different with less time and fewer open receivers.
that’s a great stat
I love shit like this…but it really makes one think that those fucking people need to get a life…
I’m guessing more than in 1908, too.
NBA? Sorry, no offense to WillieD and others who follow/watch, but snooze fest for me. I’ll be over next to the Hot Stove…if you come over, make yourself useful and bring a log or two…
In the BIG baseball news (seething with facetiousness) former Giant Josh Oh-SHIT has signed with the Reds….Carry On…
I am pumped. Taking off after a meeting tomorrow morn at 10, and will then be off until Jan. 4th. No big plans…kids and grandkids in and out during the xmas holidaze, some shit around the house, and as many damned motorcycle rides I can squeeze in, weather permitting. Mele Kilakimaka!
Curious, Chi: Ever read ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’? I spose you have. It’s a classic, even for non-scooterfolk like me.
Yes, Stix. Many moons ago. I actually tried re-reading it a few years back and fizzled. May try again.
Cubs signed Duffy too. With owners crying poor, another winter of little action so far.
Regarding the NBA season, my main interest is to see what Marvin Bagley does. This is a pivotal season for him. He has great potential, but it needs to get beyond potential this season. He needs to prove he can play NBA basketball without getting constantly injured. If he has another injury-plagued season, he’s going to be seen as a bust, and the Kings will probably try to trade him to get something/anything for him.
Another disappointing season, and he’ll just be seen as the bust the Kings drafted instead of Doncic. Portland drafting Bowie instead of Michael Jordan.
On the other hand, if he has a breakout season, and Fox continues to improve, then the Kings will have a good foundation going forward, and passing on drafting Doncic doesn’t have to be a thing.
Though Xoot cited him briefly in yesterday’s postings, it does appear that the Z&H combo has dived deep beneath radar again in their signing of 30 Y.O. RH RP John Brebbia on an ML contract for $800K. Another pitcher down with Tommy John surgery last year and likely not available for mound duty for SF till June or so, Brebbia saw a lot of action for the Cards in ‘17,18 and 19 where he logged 175 I.P. over those three years (almost 60/year).
Here’s what our dumpster-divers are spending money to acquire. Over those 3 years he posted a fine 3.14 ERA and a slender 1.103 WHIP. Nothing to sneeze at with that set of stats. Here’s the rest of the primaries: 10.18 strikeouts per 9 against 2.79 BB. Liking that. Hits per nine at 7.1. Very nice. HRs. per 9 at 0.98 –elite.
Like the rest of the NLC the Cards are slimming and trimming on the salaries, so this conceivable gem was left dangling in the wind. So who swoops in? The likely suspects.
What all this tells me is that unless the owners are nothing but tightfisted, the Giants will still have $$$ to spare on a #2 or three level starter as well as an above average multitasking LH or switcheroonie hitter. If they decide to be heap-big spenders they might also have room for a quality established closer. With bullpen depth now developed, the only viable candidate for that job would be Moronta. If they are dead-reckoning certain of his come-around, maybe they feel no need to make another reliever splash.
Already virgining on the Christmas holidays and no major F.A. signings lately. MLB ownerships don’t have a clue as to how long the friggen lockdowns will drag on. So few big plunges are being made to date. Major players seem to be the Mutts, the Jays and the Halos. Beyond that trio and their hungers for success there is plenty of room for a pair of vultures to swoop on in, And the Giants now boast the swoopingest vultures in MLB.
Stix, that “if they decide to be heap big spenders” I just don’t see happening this off season, for pitching or position guys. They did drop $18 mil on Gausman.
Let’s not forget Brebbia didn’t pitch at all 2020 and had TJ surgery in June, so he’s a ways out from being any help.
I bet Yaz jerseys are accounting for 75% of Giants merchandise sales this Christmas…
The Grave Duggar prolly accounting for the other 25%
Negative 25%? You guys crack me up with the Grave Duggar shit…
Zumie – the Kings passing on Doncic will always be A THING. Have you seen pictures of his mom? She is sizzling hot…now I would love to see her courtside for Kings games…that is a thing. 😉

I hope KIngs do well for Walton, and Mr. Bagley has a good healthy season. btw his younger brother Marcus who starred at Sacramento powerhouse HS Sheldon before state playoffs could reach conclusion, is now at Arizona. and I believe, has missed last couple games with injury.
GD fans, wouldn’t hold your breath. Pavs has column on 5 OFs Giants have signed and fails to mention him while touting what Ruf did and quoting Z on him too. did admit cutting Ruf in ST wouldn’t be big deal.
here’s couple quotes from Z on OF: “If the LH bat that we’re seeking is an OF, then obviously that sort of has a trickle down effect. It’s certainly possible that we add other OFs, because we’re still seeking a little more LU balance.”
If that’s the case, the Grave Duggar will come back to haunt us with another team…
In the Japanese minor leagues, maybe? Asking for a friend…
I looked up Bagley to see if he was related to John Bagley who I really liked at BC.
He ain’t, however turns out his grand pappy is the great Jumpin’ Joe Caldwell…
whoa Caldwell used to torment Rick Barry something fierce. Thinking about Barry today…lot of noise local beat writers on reunion with durant and Warriors. Durant in his own way reminds me of Barry, supreme talent who has knack for rubbing people including teammates the wrong way. Also, tends to get unhappy somewhere and leaves for better deal.
Wow. Speaking of dumpster diving, the 49ers just signed Josh Rosen from the Buccos practice squad.
Sorry, CJ, you just might get BeatHard again.
At least he’s young and can maybe still run.
i’d rather watch Rosen play 1000 times over Mully or Beaty
He’s about 1/2 a step up but what the hell. All I want to see is us lose the last 2. Which should be easy seeing as it is AZ and Seattle.
I guess ya need a warm body to serve as a back-up. Rosen sucks.
Specifically:
Rosen has appeared in 20 NFL games. 13 starts.
His completion percentage is 54.8% for 2,845 passing yards with 12 TDs and 19 picks.
Just lose the final two games and draft a REAL QB.
Can a good vet like Stafford win now with a healthy team next year?
A lot of NY sports talk blather about Stafford or even Ryan landing in SF next year.
JG an absolute goner, maybe back to NE…
We would have to trade for Stafford, who I would love to get. The price tag would likely be too high.
Fuck Matty Ice. At this point, I’d draft Wilson and give Jimmy G one more year. After that. see where the chips are.
Warriors game is starting on TNT network right now.
Looking forward to seeing the Warriors’ high draft pick get his career going.
Curry looked fantastic in preseason.
Wiseman’s first basket is a dunk!
zzzzzz….
Actually I don’t totally disagree with you now that teams play 5-out offenses, which I’m not a fan of.
Chi, wow you are so right on Doncic’s mom she is SMOKIN HOT my Lordy can I gift wrap her under my tree 🌲?
J Allen’s fro just deflect that? Problem for GS is gonna be at defensive end and clearing rebounds, even with Green. Durant and Irving of course among best ever.
gotta admit I’d rather watch college ball.
No Green tonight; that’s a bummer.
Joshua Ballinger Lippencott Rosen ..Just his name reeks Bust!!
But what the hell, no risk, and a upgrade over Beater&Mullens só get him in there after Beater implodes and see if QB guru Shanahan can resurrect a bust of a career for 2 games..
We want them to lose. Rosen is a fatter version of Mullens. They all suck.
Mullens needs TJ surgery! How fucked up is that? Wow. I think Jed built the stadium on some sort of indian burial ground or some shit.
Who cares? For Mullens TJ stands for Turnover Junkie!
Throw both Mullens &Beater under the bus and move on next year from these 2 inept QB’s..
garbage time. Nets up 28 with 8 minutes to go 3rd Q.
It’s only one game, but there’s no way in hell I want Harden on the Nets.
Yeah he’d ruin everything. Nets will be fun though I like Allen better than D Jordan.
Marv Albert should step aside and give a younger man a chance.
Pure greed & ego, IMO.
Plus he’s awful.
He’s no Vin Scully…
Agree, he’s almost 80 and sounds every bit of it.
he’s terrible. And he’s their #1 guy right?
He was great doing Knick & Ranger games on radio a long time ago.
Never liked any of his TV work (even in his prime) including football and boxing.
He’s flat out sucked for decades and he’s a selfish prick…
Quick question to Niner fans that maybe has a quick answer: What happened with Jimmy G? When the Pats decided a few years ago to recommit to Brady and then “let go” of Jimmy G, as a New England fan, I was puzzled and disappointed. I thought the Niners had just made a big steal. And they did go to the Super Bowl. Just curious. I figured SF would be set at QB for awhile. Guess not.
Not very mobile and has a big contract too. As Chuck said, they should be OK with him for another year and draft his replacement, imo. If rest of his weapons were healthy I think it makes big difference. Still, losing big one to KC bothered lot of fans.
It seems to me that he’s got that deer in the headlights syndrome. When he first got here when he was pressured he would run around and make plays. He rarely does that now and his supporting crowd is much better than in 2017. I think he’s been hurt and hit too many times and it’s on his mind. I don’t know if there is a cure for that. Steve Youngs last year was like that.
I like the Rosen pick up. 1 year on a shit cards team A lot of teams liked this guy out of college. Even if our 3rd string next year. lets go get Fitzmagic to back up Jimmy! JG isn’t the stud we were hoping for, but top 15 QB. Who could be better by next year that we could get? No one
Paul JG record as a starter if crazy good. One defensive / coaching fuck up from being the defending champion. Too early to give up on him imo
Yeah, it just seemed his fall from grace was fairly quick. ……
Jimmy G really does look a lot different from 2017 when he came in and played very well. Whether it’s fear of getting hurt again, or the fact we can’t block well, he just doesn’t have the confidence he used to have. Or the mobility.
Maybe the break helps. I don’t know, but he has so much trouble hitting deep passes now. Sure his ankle was hurt early and he can’t drive the ball, but there was supposed ti be improvement this year, not the inconsistency.
They have to try one more time with Jimmy G. This season was a clusterfuck even before 2/3 of the team wound up hurt. If he’s a wash, we’ll hopefully have a guy like Zach Wilson/Trey Lance to start in 2022.
I HIGHLY doubt Jimmy G is coming back, They bring him back and there’s like 5 dudes on defense they can’t sign. Time to move on. I support a trade for Darnold because he could be gotten cheap or maybe a trade for Stafford. Neither would cost much and we need a bridge to the next drafted QB. Darnold could improve under Shanny, Stafford still has skills and could keep those going. Neither is the solution but either might be a better choice than Jimmy G and a depleted roster that we have to stack around him.
Jets might press on with Darnold after blowing Lawrence…
Stafford would cost too much in a trade. I’d like to get him, but he’s not a huge improvement over Jimmy G anyway. At least for what we need him for. And that’s to be the guy to hold the spot for the new guy. These guys don’t want to trade picks anymore. Not after Ford. If we go with Rosen, there would be a huge uproar. It would be a tank job for the 2021 season. We have a shitty pass blocking line and Rosen would do more of his 2 for 1 picks to TDs behind our line.
Three dudes they get rid of need to be got rid of are Sherman, Found on road dead, and Solly Thomas. Verrett will likely cost too much as well. McKinnon, Coleman, Trent Taylor, Rick James, Cyprien, Dion Jordan, aren’t coming back either. One of either Tartt oir Ward probably don’t come back. The team will look a lot different next year.
And Lynch/Shanny need to nail this draft. They have been all over the place.
Just watching this BYU game. Wilson looks pretty damn good. Strong arm. Mobile. Can throw on the run. Improvise, but he’s playing against a non-existent defense.
For you gamblers who think KC is a lock to make the SB, you can increase your odds on the NFC champ.
Example: Seahawks are 5-1 to win the NFC but 9-1 to just meet (not beat) the Chiefs in the SB.
Get it?
No. To win the NFC what? 5-1 to win the West? Winning the NFC Championship is the same as reaching the Super Bowl.
5-1 to win NFC.
9-1 on a Chief/Seahawk SB…
Can someone give me one good reason why Fred McGriff isn’t in the stupid ass Hall of Fame?
It was thought he didn’t compile enough. But, now that Baines went in, the thinking of the voters may be evolving.
fangraphs had column on Kent where they basically said he’s in same boat as McGriff. Not enough really good seasons compared with others at position already in. Also Kent gets knocked for crummy defense at position it was considered important.
I think the voters are going to wait until Pete Rose dies, and then vote him in. Doing a Ron Santo.
With MLB now marketing gambling on baseball, it’s harder to justify keeping Rose out, given his batting stats.
That doesn’t change things for the players or managers.
No, but his managerial mistakes don’t negate his playing career. I just think the newer younger voters are going to see hypocrisy in MLB, and vote Rose in after he dies. Just my opinion.
Or at least they’ll push the Hall hard on it. I don’t know the logistics they would need to do it. A veteran’s committee influenced by the younger writers or something.
I think Bonds and Clemens will get in eventually, but it may be 20 years from now.
What will the state of MLB even be 20 years from now?
Still 500 years too soon for Zager & Evans’ opinion…
I say put him in while he’s alive – and I despised him…
He made mistakes – so what?
I have always wondered how many skeletons are in the voting sports writers closets. The way some of em talk they are saints. I would put Rose in also, he’s paid his dues. And, i don’t think anyone likes him anymore. i would put Bonds in too, put a fucking steroid asterisk after his name if it makes em feel better.
Niners beat writer Branch makes same point Flav does–at $27 mil vs. salary cap, they might be better off trying to trade or release him and sign rookie draft pick QB to keep others on defense.
yes. This is the way I expect it will go……
