A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Dubs Embarrassed in Brooklyn

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 23, 2020

Warriors looked predictably ragged last night. I have low hopes for Wiggy because he just doesn’t fit the offense—loitering on the wing waiting for a pass is not how to play with Steph Curry. But Oubre surprised me (in a bad way). He was moving all over the court which I liked but his shot looks terrible–like the timing is off his jump shot. He would let it fly and it usually obvious from the start it had no chance of going in. WiseGuy did some damage in garbage time. He’s fun to watch out there.

If anyone has any Giants news (or ideas about how to improve the team) let’s hear it…….

And after we improve the Giants, what (besides injuries) can bring the Dodgers back to the pack a little?

    • chipower9 said, on December 23, 2020 at 8:01 am

      Assassinations? 😉

Improve the Giants: Sign Trevor Bauer or another top FA starter. I like Bauer as he is talking one-year deals. Give him $30 mil or whatever. It is in this year’s budget, and definitely in next year’s when big money comes off the books. Bauer has openly said he likes SF, but he also wants to go to a contender, and the Giants are probably a couple years away from contending.

Just throw me a bone that isn’t the classic Z-man dumpster dive.

I watched a bit of the beginning of the Dubs game. I just really struggle getting into the NBA. The game has just changed and I don’t get a lot of entertainment out of it…that’s just me.

I switched-over and watched another shit-show in watching Bring ‘Em Young wax UCF’s asses. I like the Wilson kid, but doubt the Niners go QB in the first round.

Do you think any rule changes would help, Chi?
Years ago when big men dominated, there were people who thought they should raise the rim and increase the size of the court.
And they widened the key twice (to thwart Milan, then Wilt)…

      • chipower9 said, on December 23, 2020 at 8:49 am

I really don’t know Loo. I loved watching NBA ball when I was a kid. I am not enough a student of the game to feel I would have any good suggestions. My passions are baseball, baseball, college football, NFL, NHL hockey, and then maybe the NBA. Hell, soccer probably gets a higher rating than the NBA for me.

        Sorry for the cop-out answer.

Giants news? Well, for what its worth, Matt Duffy signed a minor league deal with the Cubs. Also, it seems my offseason wish list, position wise, is the same again this year as it has been the last couple of years.

Loo, I’ve been in the anti Puig group for years, but now I’ve warmed up to the why not group. The dude switched to having Rachel Luba as his agent, she also happens to be Trevor Bauer’s agent. Sounds like one stop shopping to me.

Like The GraveDuggar for a select few..

  4. unca_chuck said, on December 23, 2020 at 8:32 am

Duffy is obviously the missing piece.

As far as Garoppolo goes, it would be nuts to think a rookie can come in and win right off the bat. 2021 would be some flavor of disaster even with a strong defense. To bank on a rookie would be yet another bad move.

    • djloo27 said, on December 23, 2020 at 8:36 am

Just one year removed from the SB, couldn’t a guy like Stafford take you back there if the team got healthy or have they gone downhill that much?

    • unca_chuck said, on December 23, 2020 at 8:48 am

He could, but they would be mortgaging their future by giving Deetroit draft picks. SInce Lynch got torched by KC for Ford, they don’t want to burn picks for players. Even if it is Stafford. He would cost $10 mill more than Jimmy G.

The Niners have 40 (!!!) free agents so they have a lot of decisions to make. The defensive backfield is the biggest issue as Verrett, Johnson, Sherman, Cyprien and others may not be resigned. K’waun Williams and Emmanuel Moseley should be re-signed. Witherspoon is such n enigma. He’s fantastic when playing well, and dogshit when not. But you look at what happened when he was out and our defense was riddled with passes.

Not sure what they will do with him, but I’d give him the benefit of the doubt.

      • chipower9 said, on December 23, 2020 at 8:56 am

Charlie – I think they may go cornerback with the first pick, and go QB in the second round, hoping someone like Florida’s Trask falls to the 2nd round.

      • unca_chuck said, on December 23, 2020 at 9:47 am

Last year’s draft had so many good CBs. I wish we had done something last year. Yeah, they could do that, but I think if Wilson/Lance is there they have to go for him.

    • chipower9 said, on December 23, 2020 at 8:53 am

If they draft a QB high (first or 2nd round), I would be a fan of keeping Jimmy G on a one-year deal, if that can be negotiated, and have the new rookie QB develop for a year. Whether the QB to lead the team next year is JG or another vet, it doesn’t matter to me. I think with a “decent” vet QB the team could win next year and challenge to go deep into the playoffs, and potentially the SB. That, as this season is indicative, would be contingent on the team staying healthy.

  5. unca_chuck said, on December 23, 2020 at 8:38 am

Chuck, I’m hoping the Niners give Wilson a good long look. Jimmy G is not the answer obviously. Well, only as a stop-gap. Chances are Lance or Wilson will be available if we fall to 9.

  6. zumiee said, on December 23, 2020 at 9:17 am

The current style of NBA play is being driven by analytics, much like baseball. So those two sports have turned into all-or-nothing sports. 3-pointers or one-on-one drives to the basket. Home runs or strikeouts.
The NFL has used some rule changes to make football more pass-happy, which is a generally entertaining style of play. And football has a lot of variety of plays.
MLB and the NBA have evolved into something less entertaining, though.
The NBA could take away the 3-point line, but they’ll never do that. Or limit the amount of 3-point attempts per quarter? They’d never do that.

    • Flavor said, on December 23, 2020 at 9:18 am

How bout we fire up a four point spot on the court? Only half kidding

      • djloo27 said, on December 23, 2020 at 9:26 am

That’s the kind of idea that would drive Francesa through the roof.
Or if you really wanted to raise his blood pressure, suggest a 2.5 point line at 25 feet, a 3 point line at 30 feet and so on…

      • unca_chuck said, on December 23, 2020 at 9:48 am

Behind half court is the 4 point line.

    • unca_chuck said, on December 23, 2020 at 9:46 am

The defensive changes over the years are ludicrous regarding defensive backs. And they still can’t get PI right.

  7. chipower9 said, on December 23, 2020 at 9:22 am

Maybe they allow full-on body checks in the NBA, you know, similar to when a player is checked-into the boards in a hockey game.

      thanks, interesting.

  9. willedav said, on December 23, 2020 at 10:06 am

I think with health of offensive weapons Niners have, either G or a rook QB would be fine. Running game with Mostert and receivers like Kittle Aiyuk Samuel and Bourne plenty enough to do well and score points.
Last year SF won playoff games where D line and running game was enough in itself.

Fixing D line and secondary is another story and lot more complicated than just getting Bosa back.
But watching young QBs like Herbert and others come right in and play well I’d be fine taking one early.

  10. willedav said, on December 23, 2020 at 10:23 am

I’d like to see NBA allow all zone defenses and jettison defensive 3 seconds rule that discourages help defense entirely. You can get very creative with zones, trap and double, and still defend 3 pt line. On offense you can employ posts at FT line or low and create driving lanes as well as just bombing away which is unfortunately what so much of NBA is about these days.
I love Durant’s mid range game but other than him all the Nets did early was cast off 3s. boring as hell, and in 5 out everyone basically runs same type of initial action, one downscreen or dribble handoff. Again, boring.
Most of time I’d rather watch college teams play even with less skilled players.

    • willedav said, on December 23, 2020 at 10:50 am

I’ve seen trickle down effect of 5 out b-ball in youth group stuff. All kids do is one on one or pass and cut through to relocate back on perimeter (any passes always thrown too late). It’s boring to coach and to watch, with little ball movement, motion or player movement. and of course those with individual one on one skills dominate all the action.

wow story on Yahoo entitled “Farewell to the Murph” about destruction ongoing of the old stadium in San Diego as new one to replace it being built next door for SD St. Home of Dan Fouts and Air Coryell, Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman, Chicken, et al who lament not being able to say proper goodbye/farewell ceremony.

  12. James said, on December 23, 2020 at 10:53 am

It’s ironic that Bonds and the Splash Bros. were models for the “boring” analytics based style of play that predominates baseball and basketball. If the team I’m rooting for is winning, it ain’t boring.

  13. gianthead said, on December 23, 2020 at 11:25 am

Well that was ugly…real ugly. Was hoping for a rebound season and this may turn into a season with not a lot of rebounds. One thing that that concerns me about Wiseman since we saw so little of his game in Memphis is that he goes up for every offense and defensive play around the rim with two hands and ends up catching the ball below the rim. In the NBA they are going to smack that ball out ofnhis hands more tines than not. He has to go stronger on both sides of the game and show some ambidexterity with both hands….we need a 100% Draymond and no more half efforts from Wiggins. Wiggins and Wiseman were supposed to be the center pieces in a deal for Giannis and now that is down the drain…fuck!

    • unca_chuck said, on December 23, 2020 at 12:18 pm

It’s one game. I think the season isn’t lost quite yet. They have been playing together 2 weeks and they lost their best shooter for the year.

  14. gianthead said, on December 23, 2020 at 11:31 am

Welcome your starting Niner QB for 2021…Sam Darnold or Carson Wentz or bring them both in…lol!!!! 🤣🤣🤣😥😫

  15. gianthead said, on December 23, 2020 at 11:32 am

I only go after Bauer for a multi-year deal. Aint worth spending $30 mill for one year while very unlikely we are competing for anything next year. What does one year of Bauer do for us???

  16. alleykat69 said, on December 23, 2020 at 11:52 am

I think it’s time for Shanny to give up on his freaking elusive running backs idea.None of these guys are big enough to take a pounding and hold up.I’m a huge Mostert fan, but even he can’t stay healthy.Same when they had the explosive Matt Brieda who’s damm fast but injury prone.Just go out and look for the second coming of Henry in size and strength in the future.Even a JK Dobbins is going to be a stud in a few more years with his size. Also would like to see them trade with the Vikings for there backup RB Alexander Mattison who is stuck behind Dalvin Cook, but is a beast and could be a star with the 49ers!!

years ago company had store on South Main, near Locust and parking garage. Very nice upscale area, with restaurants too. Too bad they lost that one–large store expensive lease. Currently they took one over from another travel co. inside Mall. Mgr. is really nice guy very professional too; hope he survives. Noticed airports say travel is still down about 80%.

“If the team I’m rooting for is winning, it ain’t boring.”

Well, true. I get that. But just watching a random MLB or NBA game of other teams lacks the entertainment appeal it used to have for me. I don’t play Fantasy sports, so I don’t have that driving my interest in games.

  22. zumiee said, on December 23, 2020 at 2:35 pm

I’ll be all in on watching the Kings tonight. But I do expect to see a zillion 3-pointers hoisted up by the teams. Sigh….

  23. zumiee said, on December 23, 2020 at 2:42 pm

I miss the amount of great passes we used to see in the NBA. Teams ran more complex plays and knew how to run fast breaks better.

    • willedav said, on December 23, 2020 at 2:54 pm

Yes. Today fast break guys run to 3 line. Passing ball seems like lost art to many. so often 20 seconds run off shot clock and ball is 28 ft from hoop from all the useless dribbling.
Bird was tremendous passer in addition to his other skills; added lot to his game and his teammates.

  24. zumiee said, on December 23, 2020 at 2:55 pm

It wasn’t all that long ago, a few years ago, the Warriors were one of the last NBA teams to run a lot of plays, and winning championships doing it. I remember back screens and lots of cutting.

  25. zumiee said, on December 23, 2020 at 2:56 pm

“Yes. Today fast break guys run to 3 line.”

Yeah, drives me nuts. I’ll never be convinced that type of fastbreak is good basketball.

Bernard King was my favorite Warrior(Besides of course Thurmond,Barry,Jumpin Joe Ellis, and the hard hat legend Larry Smith) King laid it on the line ALL 48 minutes. He would drive to the basket with incredible speed and flair and a great passer as well!! Wish he stayed longer but we might have gotten the best years out of him before sadly he knees blew out..

They were US made, in Utah…and years later customers used to look at you funny and say, “uh not those oil guys, right?”
