A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Tip Of The Cap To Mr. 43 Year Old

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 25, 2021

I’ve run out of hatred for Tom Brady. To be honest, most of it stemmed from him threatening the legacy of Joe as the greatest QB of all time. For me, if I had to pick one QB to start a game I had to win it would still be Joe 1000X. But Brady is going to his 10th damn SB. I’ve given up and he gets all my respect. And you know what? I am calling it right now, Tampa not only covers but wins the game vs Mighty Mahomes. Their D is the best KC has faced all year. And sprinkle in a little Brady magic, I see them getting it done.

Congrats to Mr. Sports Dude who rode the unusual PUNTING category to victory in the NFLBBB3. I sent him $20 this morning. All my fellow losers please do the same. mwrymer@gmail.com

Sentiment pretty common in Bay Area; no one replaces Montana at top of throne. Over years lot of players in all sports I’ve disliked I’ve come to respect for what they’ve accomplished. Used to know UPS driver who gambled on football a lot, who was Dolphins fan and hated Brady. And who often lost $$ because of it, which i used to laugh at him about. “Dog you keep betting against him, and getting same result. All he does is win.”

Still, I’d be very surprised anyone beats KC.

  2. willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 7:29 am

NFC seemed much weaker conference; felt whomever won AFC would take SB and Chiefs proved much the better. TB defense hasn’t seen anything like Mahomes/Reid/Bienemy. Hard to forget last year, when Niners had them in check, until they didn’t and KC exploded to win going away. It’s just what they do.

    • Flavor said, on January 25, 2021 at 7:39 am

“exploded to win going away?” WHHHHAAAATTTT? If KC doesn’t complete that absurd 3rd and 16 Niners win that SB fairly easily……..

      • gianthead said, on January 25, 2021 at 8:32 am

As absurd as the Packers at the end of the first half allowing any receiver to get behind them on a final play. Ridic and then the pulling a Blake Snell-like decision and settling for a FG at the end also absurd.

Brady great but how many breaks has he gotten also in these SB runs. Could easily have lost yday. Threw three dying pigeons for picks yday. The bullshit tuck rule got him his first SB appearance and chance to win. Fuck head Pete Carroll throws the god damned ball on the goal line with Marshawn Lynch in full beast mode and then the fucking Falcons and Kyle Shanahan cant do shit for an entire half with a big fucking lead and out of the three SB he wins, two are by FGs and one by 4 and he cant score then 13 against the Rams while they cant score more than 3 in his 4th super bowl win.

Yeah GOAT fine and amazing to be still doing it at his age but one fucking charmed motherfucking life that son lip kissing motherfucker…GHead OUT!

      • willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 8:33 am

yeah that’s exactly what I’d call scoring 21 points in 7 minutes while winning 4th quarter 21-0. Like i said, it’s what they do to everyone.
Dude, get off the boat on big river in Egypt. Niners won 3rd quarter 10-0, then forgot to score ever again and KC blew them away..

      • gianthead said, on January 25, 2021 at 8:33 am

And Joe Montana any day for one big must win…

      • Flavor said, on January 25, 2021 at 9:21 am

totally disagree. That game ends if the Niners just stop them on 3rd and 16. OVER.

  3. Flavor said, on January 25, 2021 at 7:38 am

I feel better about the under in the SB but I will be throwing a few bucks on TB money line, too

they already have a cheap-0 version of JBJ in The Grave Duggar…..

    • alleykat69 said, on January 25, 2021 at 12:25 pm

Still in need of a center fielder?
When they have a 5 tool one in Jaylin Davis!
Fuck the Giants organization for rear ending this kid!
He gets no chances to prove himself 12 fucking AB’s ? even then he hit 2 homers.
And I’m tired of them saying he has swing& miss issues FIX THEM THEN THATS YOUR FUCKING JOBS TO DO!!! Just trade him now so I can watch him hit HR’s elsewhere like when the Giants traded George Foster to Cincinnati and he hits 50 bombs plus and makes the Giants look like embarrassed fools..

    excellent

  6. willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 10:20 am

Yesterday was textbook Chiefs. Down 9-0 off muffed punt, second quarter they have 3 drives 80 82 and 77 yards that all end in TDs. 2 middle quarters they outscore Buffalo 31-6 and next thing you know it’s 38-15.
It’s what they’ve been doing for last 2 years and I don’t see anyone stopping them, my nsho.

Make a mistake/have a bad break, next thing you know they are in your endzone. No way any one team in NFC approximates Kelce Mahomes Hill and running game all on same team.
Bills D guys said they were unprepared for how fast and efficiently they operate just from watching film.

    • djloo27 said, on January 25, 2021 at 10:27 am

They might be the football version of the Edmonton Oilers when they were winning Cups with Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Coffey, etc. Time will tell…

  7. Macdog said, on January 25, 2021 at 11:49 am

Chiefs beat Bucs 27-24 in late Nov. at Tampa. KC took 17-0 lead in 1st quarter, FG drive of 74 yards, TD drives 75 and 90. Bucs got to within 27-24 with 4 minutes left, but Chiefs got 3 first downs to run out the clock, two on Mahomes runs and then clinching 8-yard throw to Hill on 3rd-and-7. Bucs haven’t lost since.

  8. willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 12:17 pm

didn’t see if this was on MLBTR, but Giants new lead beat writer on Chron Susan Slusser says AZ wants to pause opening of ST by maybe up to a month. AZ of course hit very hard by covid surge. Slusser says they suggested maybe bubble approach but that would be unworkable given size of roster (50+) plus coaching and staff.
Slusser has been with A’s for some time and fills Hank’s slot for Chron.

    • willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 12:34 pm

nothing on MLBTR about this. One story on nbcbayarea site from Pavs is about Baer making plans once fans are allowed in stands–screening masks social distancing yada yada. Says Giants currently plan to have pitchers/catchers in AZ Feb.15th.

  9. xoot said, on January 25, 2021 at 12:33 pm

Slusser grew up an a’s fan in the east bay and covered the team for twenty years. For a long time, she refused to vote for Barry Bonds on her HOF ballot and tried to justify her decision with anti-steroid screeds that betrayed shame for the 89 era a’s more than anything else. But she changed her mind after meeting the great Roger Angell, who has always said Bonds was one of the best and deserved all honors. Slusser and her husband, sportswriter Dan Brown, led the effort during Slusser’s time as Pres of the BWAHA (or whatever it’s called) to induct Angell into the writers’ hall. (A New Yorker baseball writer, he’s never been a member of the ass-kissing HOF voting club.) Slusser and Brown were successful. Angell, who’s ancient, maybe 90 at the time, received his recognition. Next year, Slusser started voting for Bonds on her ballots.

She is smart and knowledgeable and open to conversation on her twitter feed. She’ll be a huge improvement. imo.

    • xoot said, on January 25, 2021 at 2:12 pm

I think her twitter links to her Chron articles bypass the paywall. I read the one about the mlb/Union impasse over season start and length (and universal DH) that way.

  10. willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 12:45 pm

Checking out Slusser’s twitter, it’s the Cactus League Association that is calling for delay.
“After meeting with MLB, the Cactus League Association ‘believes it is wise to delay the start of ST in Arizona.'”
She adds this is not unilateral decision and the players union is aware of situation on part of MLB.

  11. willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 1:05 pm

Slusser retweets original story she wrote for Chron, which does require subscription, but headline is :”Cactus League and Arizona cities (!) request ST delay.”

Did you happen to catch any of Quickley last night, Willie?

  12. unca_chuck said, on January 25, 2021 at 1:44 pm

That fucking Tuck Rule started the whole thing. Brady has done a lot of great stuff but he’s had a ton of breaks along the way. Yeah, everyone gets them. Montana nearly threw a pick in the end zone against the Bengals in SB XXIII that would have sealed that game. But for the most part, when Montana got there he dominated.

Brady? Your opponent throws a pick on the ONE yard line. Your opponent gags up a 26 point lead. Game winning FGs just ain’t the same. No real Montana-to-Taylor with 36 seconds left moment for him.

  13. djloo27 said, on January 25, 2021 at 2:34 pm

I don’t expect this to register with many of you, but Harthorne Wingo died…

  14. alleykat69 said, on January 25, 2021 at 2:50 pm

I remember him Loo. He was a Knicks fan favorite for his awkward shooting style. And a team likable guy player..

    • sandog said, on January 25, 2021 at 2:53 pm

I remember him. Mainly, I remember the name. Such a great name. All these years, I thought his name was “Hawthorne” Wingo. In fact, I thought you made a typo.

      • willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 3:08 pm

nah it really is Harthorne, out of Friendship JC iirc. I think people used to announce it as Hawthorne
        Remember Hambone Williams?

      • djloo27 said, on January 25, 2021 at 3:24 pm

        Wow, forgot all about him.
I think the nickname “Hambone” has probably been retired…

    • djloo27 said, on January 25, 2021 at 2:54 pm

The name had a lot to do with it, too…

      • djloo27 said, on January 25, 2021 at 2:56 pm

I typed this before seeing your post, Dog!

  15. alleykat69 said, on January 25, 2021 at 3:06 pm

Montana will always be the guy, just can’t help it .When u need a 2 minute drive in regular season are SB u knew it was automatic that he got the job done.I don’t feel the same about Brady who’s loss some and should have atleast 2 more..
Though I still dream about how many SB’s the 49ers would have won if after Young was forced to retire with concussions if the 49ers didn’t draft Brady in 99 ( still can’t believe he is playing in his 4th decade incredible) make a nice run with him then draft Rodgers to be his backup in 2004 and see how it played out.
Real sad that both players grew up huge 49ers fans and yet they passed on both!!

  16. willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 3:14 pm

wow Loo didn’t see it but checked Knicks-Blazers box. The Q got 31 in 24 minutes. Hit 5 3s out of 8 and all 8 FTs. Bullock is hurt I think, so they started Burks instead and brought him off bench. Good for him. I’m sure you didn’t overhype him I’ll keep an eye out in future boxes and whatev Knicks game are shown live.
Dame got 39 with McCollum out, got to be an eye opener for rookie to go up against him.

  17. alleykat69 said, on January 25, 2021 at 3:14 pm

One Knicks player I always admired was Dick Barnett. He had just a calmness about
himself and he had that incredible “Fall Back Jumper” that defenders could not block!
Think he was given the nickname fall back even.Good solid player!

    • djloo27 said, on January 25, 2021 at 3:19 pm

Best book about 69-70 Knicks is called “Miracle On 33rd Street”.
      Some great Barnett stories…

      • djloo27 said, on January 25, 2021 at 3:29 pm

Bill Bradley was a notoriously poor dresser among the high fashion Knicks of the Clyde era.
Once he he showed up wearing an oversized raincoat and Barnett let him know.
“London Fog? Man that sucka cover all of London”…

    • willedav said, on January 25, 2021 at 3:54 pm

didn’t Barnett used to yell “fall back baby” as in on defense because his shot was going in, when he shot the jumper?

      • djloo27 said, on January 25, 2021 at 6:00 pm

I think Chick Hearn did, not Barnett…

The story Slusser wrote in Chron and that was on twitter about possible delay to ST in Maricopa county of AZ does show up on MLBTR. As noted, the players do have a say in how and when ST starts and are prepared to report as originally notified. Also saw story they rejected DH to NL and extended playoffs for 2021 season.

  20. willedav said, on January 26, 2021 at 8:42 am

Not that it’s likely to make hella lot of difference but it is nice to see annoying Dodger who used to kill us Kike Hernandez out of the national league. Blue gloves really should not be allowed in MLB.

  21. Bozo said, on January 26, 2021 at 10:14 am

Yeah, I agree Brady deserves a tip of the cap for being 43 and still playing at that level. I still don’t like the guy.

  22. alleykat69 said, on January 26, 2021 at 10:21 am

Yeah beating both 2 HOF QB’s Brees&Rodgers on the road ( besides himself) is real impressive but I’ve seen way to much of him! Like Mahomes and the Chiefs to repeat!

  23. willedav said, on January 26, 2021 at 11:10 am

6 local writers posted HOF ballots-Jenkins Killion Kroichick Shea Hank and Slusser only one who voted for max of 10. 4 for Bonds Clemens Schilling, 5 for Kent, 4 for Vizquel. 4 for Andruw Jones, 3 for Sheffield.

  24. James said, on January 26, 2021 at 12:34 pm

At one time I was very opposed to the DH, but I’m really bummed about that decision. I’m curious what the rationale was. Do the rule makers think there’s still a chance it isn’t eventually going to be adopted? If that’s not the case, why wait, after we all grew accustomed to it? The wailing and lamentations were nonexistent.

    • unca_chuck said, on January 26, 2021 at 1:55 pm

I guess you didn’t hear me. I don’t like it.

      • James said, on January 26, 2021 at 1:59 pm

Didn’t hear you complaining during the season. I don’t believe anybody truly gives a shit anymore.

      • djloo27 said, on January 26, 2021 at 2:12 pm

I think Chi and maybe Kat are big anti-DH guys.
Personally, I feel almost all traditions are down the drain so what’s another one?

  25. djloo27 said, on January 26, 2021 at 2:23 pm

It’s a new world – more than ever.
You think 30 year-olds give a fuck what 60 year olds think?
    I know I didn’t…

    • unca_chuck said, on January 26, 2021 at 3:03 pm

The problem is, most 30 year olds aren’t fans. Manfred Man is losing the old fans with these stupid rule changes while not attracting the young ones.

  26. willedav said, on January 26, 2021 at 3:08 pm

mm so now Kapler has to go back to managing pitching changes etc. like when he was in Philly. good or bad?

    • unca_chuck said, on January 26, 2021 at 3:27 pm

His pen problems were forgetting to warm guys up, not how to pinch hit for pitchers.

  27. alleykat69 said, on January 26, 2021 at 3:10 pm

Yeah I’ve been against the DH along with Chi & Unca but like you say Loo nobody gives a shit what a 60 year old thinks over a 30 year old.And besides the Giants have easily the most amount of DH options in baseball with there old players with some who should not even see the field. So cue up David Bowie “Changes” its inevitable that it will happen soon..

  28. unca_chuck said, on January 26, 2021 at 3:27 pm

Mad Bum is thrilled I’m sure.

  29. djloo27 said, on January 26, 2021 at 3:33 pm

    Phils re-signed 29 y.o. Realmuto for 5/115.
See how that looks in 2-3 years…

    • willedav said, on January 26, 2021 at 4:05 pm

mm could easily be a good deal for team; he’s only 29 right?. cbs site just had column comparing long term deals for C, and according to them the Giants deal with Posey 2013-21 with AAV of $18.5 mil served them very well. OPS+ of 122 and overall .298 BA with .800 OPS over length of the deal so far.

  30. djloo27 said, on January 26, 2021 at 3:34 pm

    No one voted into HOF…

  31. unca_chuck said, on January 26, 2021 at 3:35 pm

    No one makes the HoF.

    Schilling 71.1% (16 votes short)
    Bonds 60.7%
    Clemens 52.9%

    No one else even close

  32. Winder said, on January 26, 2021 at 4:08 pm

I used to be against the DH but to be honest I don’t care anymore. Pitchers are usually easy outs so why not make the game a little more interesting. Last year didn’t bother me at all except for the extra innings rule. I kind of like the idea of a pitcher having to stay in for a least 3 batters. That moves the game along also.

  33. alleykat69 said, on January 26, 2021 at 4:10 pm

Guess Schilling will have to settle for his bloody sock 🧦 soaked in ketchup..

    Thanks for sending the money:)
Re Joe vs Tom? Joe 4-0 in SB but 4-4 in NFC championship game. Tom 10-4 in Championship games.
Should anyone say Brady should lose credit because he has such a high winning percentage to get their. Yes brady won a few SB’s he could have lost, but the same could be said for both losses to the Giants, and to the eagles so it seems to have evened out.
    Tom 1, Joe 2
