A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

New Guy

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 26, 2021

Tommy La Stella pick up…..

Pros: doesn’t strike out much. High OBP.

Cons: Slow and pretty weak—- There are few things I hate more than baseball players in today’s game who are slow and weak.

Also, he’s left handed and I get the need for a platoon with some of our RH platoon guys but…..I don’t know, this one isn’t really doing it for me……

Would have preferred they sign Marcus Semien instead and move Crawford…..anywhere.

This guy is a good hitter and can back up 2b and 3b. good signing!
Dubon I guess is only SS option. I liked Semien too but could still be option next year.

they need to retire Zenyatta from breeding. She lost another foal. She’s never produced a winner. This isn’t fair to do to one of the great champions and heroes in the sport……..

LaStella. MLBTRs says they’re virgining on signing LaStella, who was a pest with the A’s vs SF this past season, whre his stats were 281, .349 and .449. He does have a bit of pop for a middle infielder who will likely face some RH pitching while shuffling between 2nd, third and pinch-hitting duties. Could this possibly mean that our Silver-Slugger second-baseman might possibly be dangled slightly as a trade candidate?

At age 31 LaStella is a slightly better than average hitting infielder with a career at .274, .349, .405. As Flav hints, he might be a bit slow for SS and I didn’t do deep research to find out what he has for an arm. He doesn’t seem to have the multi-positional versatility we might like to see, his salary should be somewhat modest and he looks to be a 1-2 season fill who is not an offensive liability.

all these writers who get a HOF vote and then send in a BLANK fucking card—-what a bunch of self-righteous doosh bags….

    • willedav said, on January 26, 2021 at 7:18 pm

Killion and Kroichick only had 3–oddly enough all the same Jones Kent Vizquel. Killion, who is regularly disgusting, still pulls out character card and Kroichick (who mostly covers golf) says Hall should be exclusive to only the greats.

  5. willedav said, on January 26, 2021 at 7:14 pm

He’s an .800 OPS guy who can fill in ably for Solano and Longo and be a bridge to Wilson and Luciano years. A year ago 2019 he hit 16 bombs for Angels in 300 ABs. That was his best year but he also had high slugging pct.472 couple years earlier. He can hit and as high OB, .370 last season with .450 slugging—not weak.

    • Flavor said, on January 26, 2021 at 7:30 pm

I’m not sold AT ALL on this late career power stroke he found. In fact, I almost guarantee Oracle zaps it back to what it was prior to 2019. He’s going to lose a lot of bombs out in Triples alley, just watch,

      • Bozo said, on January 26, 2021 at 8:21 pm

Yeah, subtract those stats at Angel stadium and I’m scratching my head about this signing (3 years?). In NL West stadiums he has 0 HRs in a total of 123 ABs. Also another 0 HRs in his 120 ABs at the Oaktown Bart stop, but he did ring up 2 HRs during his 256 ABs at Wrigley, which is 1 more than he gave up in his 1 1/3 inning pitching there.

  6. alleykat69 said, on January 26, 2021 at 7:15 pm

LaStella is a decent player that doesn’t K, not to good defensively.age 32 that’s right there with the Giants youth movement. Why did they even bother signing Jason Vosler who’s Lefthanded and plays all the positions LaStella plays and is 5 years younger?
And what about the RH batter with power to play the outfield? Since they have no use for the young and talented Jaylin Davis anymore..

  7. willedav said, on January 26, 2021 at 7:26 pm

this also gets Wilmet off backing up anywhere beside 1b good thing for defense. Plus Flores only has this one upcoming season on his deal too.
The other guy was AAA phenom stuck lighting up the Coast League that could provide depth if needed. LaStella is proven ML hitter.

  8. djloo27 said, on January 26, 2021 at 7:33 pm

Kind of a typical pickup for them.
Haven’t seen much of him – guess he’ll help some.
    Turns 32 this week…

weird that Z decides that THIS DUDE is the dude to give out the longest term deal he’s ever given out

  9. djloo27 said, on January 26, 2021 at 7:40 pm

If you need convincing how much the NBA game has changed, watch almost any team set up on offense and count how many players are lingering outside the 3 point line or maybe a foot or so inside of it. For the Knicks it’s usually 4….incredible!

    • alleykat69 said, on January 26, 2021 at 7:51 pm

Yeah it’s back to Dean Smith’s 4 corner offense except he used it to frustrate the opponents defense..

Schilling got shut out of the Hall of Fame again. He’s angry about it. Gee, it’s tragic.

  14. willedav said, on January 27, 2021 at 7:27 am

I liked what I saw of him as an Angel, and was disappointed A’s snapped him up. As FA I thought he was good get.
As for triples alley, what happened last season when Baer closed archways? Belt and Crawford both went off and had their best offensive seasons in long time. Park played very differently, as K and K said repeatedly.

I think Italian Star profiles as Solano type. 2 years with SF the late blooming Solano has hit 28 doubles and 7 bombs in 400 ABs, with OPS of .821. Last year slash line .326/.365/.463 for .826. Sounds to me like LaStella is his LH complement–and everyone loves to watch Solano hit, despite lack of bombs, right?

    • willedav said, on January 27, 2021 at 7:41 am

Pavs column notes he hit for .900 OPS vs. RH pitching last year (.880 year 2019); OB .393 slugging .510. Fills in for Solano and for Longoria, who had OPS of .706 vs. RHP. and as we all know, gets hurt a lot. Perfect platoon complement imo.

  15. willedav said, on January 27, 2021 at 7:32 am

Most enjoyable thing to me about 2020 Giants baseball was all the offense. Everyone except Longo and the Cs hit well, including guys like Flores and Ruf, and Giants were suddenly in top 5 in league in lot of offensive categories. This was best hitting team in long time.
I think Italian Star is better hitter off bench than Dodgers guys they had last year, Hernandez and Taylor. Glad he’s on our side and not theirs

    • Carstie Clausen said, on January 27, 2021 at 7:54 am

Giants may sport more platoons than an infantry brigade. Not a bad thing as Kapler well might go by the book in assignments vs RH or LH hurlers. Tough reliever comes in and faces a very strong bench, whether he’s a righty or southpaw. Focus now should be an upper-mid rotation piece plus a closer with some cred. Either Solano or Dubon could feature in a trade scenario to a team strong on pitching and offensively challenged. Wilmer is also a possibility, primarily with an A.L. suiter.

  16. Flavor said, on January 27, 2021 at 8:21 am

La Stella is just a better Joe Panik. He’s fine. I’m not sweatin’ the signing I just don’t think it’s going to do much to help the team’s offense.

  17. unca_chuck said, on January 27, 2021 at 8:34 am

Jesus, why be a fuckin’ A’s fan? That front office is pissing on the fans yet again for the 1,500th time.

La Stella? Better than what we had. Which is a low bar . . .

    • unca_chuck said, on January 27, 2021 at 8:37 am

When Chapman and Olsen go they will be back to building up from scratch. I don’t know how Billy Beane can keep on doing this over and over only to see his guys fly off to greener pastures.

      • Flavor said, on January 27, 2021 at 8:42 am

not sure how much Beane is still influencing those moves. He’s pretty focused on his English soccer team. Dave Forst makes all the A’s moves now.

      • sandog said, on January 27, 2021 at 8:50 am

Dutch soccer team Flav, not English. C’mon man, get your head in the game.

And it seems to me the A’s have been losing top quality players for years and keep bouncing back. I really don’t mind us following that model with maybe a bit more of a commitment to keeping home grown studs.

      • willedav said, on January 27, 2021 at 8:58 am

Melvin in last year of contract too. Why would he stick around if this is how they are going to roll, letting Semien and LaStella walk without reasonable offer? Olson and Chapman are going to be expensive, they’ve known this long time and don’t seem into giving them any extension.

      • Flavor said, on January 27, 2021 at 9:48 am

        Dutch. Not english. Got it.

  18. sandog said, on January 27, 2021 at 8:48 am

I’m ok with La Stella. I’m not wild about 3 years, but I’m assuming the $ is not big and it sounds like he fits well as a LH bat who can play a few positions.

  19. gianthead said, on January 27, 2021 at 8:50 am

He bats second??? Yaz lead off? Wish Dubon would grab leadoff and own it. Farhan was never signing a SS now with three premier SSs as free agents next year…Story could become available as well…

  20. alleykat69 said, on January 27, 2021 at 9:30 am

I don’t know if Artois Stella should bat 2nd, I’m thinking leadoff with his ability to put the ball in play with his terrific K rate.I actually want to move Yaz down to 3rd with Dubon batting second. Before the rest of the turtles 🐢 get a chance to bat and clog the bases are empty them with a DP ball..

    • djloo27 said, on January 27, 2021 at 10:56 am

Where do you stand on Jaylin Davis?

      • alleykat69 said, on January 27, 2021 at 2:17 pm

Oh I’m still on board with him the Giants are foolish if they don’t give him a legitimate chance imo..

  21. chipower9 said, on January 27, 2021 at 9:37 am

Like Sandog, I am OK with La Stella, but question three years. Financial terms have not been released.

The positive: He has never had a negative WAR in his seven years. Also, La Stella had a .903 OPS against RHers last year. Longo had a .671 OPS against righties.

    Steward’s been around a while he’s seen a lot

    • unca_chuck said, on January 27, 2021 at 1:19 pm

A decade? Shut the fuck up. It has been 3.5 years. We all know the contract situation. It is getting better but it isn’t over.

  23. djloo27 said, on January 27, 2021 at 9:57 am

From 3,000 miles away, the attitude of the Giants management seems to be this:
Be grateful for the 3 titles, since you never thought you’d see even one, and STFU for a few decades…

  24. alleykat69 said, on January 27, 2021 at 10:19 am

    Spot on by Steward!
This really is a faceless organization now at the top.
Zman&Harris seem to have little say and have to work with a
tight ass ownership group you can’t squeeze a buck out of their asses!
These penny-anti signings just to think they’re pleasing the fan base is not cutting it.
Yeah Yeah wait till next year when a shitload of money comes money comes off the books yada yada,
will they really makes significant moves even then under this ruderless ownership group!

And btw they had their chance to get rid(and I can’t stand seeing this weasels face anytime) of gutless wife beater Larry “2 black eyes “Baer and didn’t even have the cajones on the board to do that, which should how poorly they are run..

    • djloo27 said, on January 27, 2021 at 10:54 am

Aw c’mon, it was just a little hip check…

  25. willedav said, on January 27, 2021 at 10:28 am

I don’t think Z is following A’s model at all–more like Dodgers one. LA hit big with younger players and Giants farm is in great shape. Last year cost Giants and the top prospects would have been year closer to getting to ML level. I do think ownership has tied his hands as to trading off pieces of BC so he’s stuck in place there. And I doubt they would ever OK a long term deal as expensive as Betts anyway so those will have to come from withi the system.

So what he has put together is 77 W team under Bochy swansong, near .500 last season with fine offense he upgraded by acquiring and keeping likes of Dickerson Yaz Flores and Solano, plus Gausman, whom they are paying $18mil.
A’s would never have done that and more likely let him walk as they did with Semien.

He’s counting on hitting on the prospects (or including them in trade for vet) and has $$ to spend on FAs/top players to fill a need, more likely next year than this, unfortunately. Future looks lot better than past.

    • chipower9 said, on January 27, 2021 at 11:16 am

I agree with this synopsis more so than the team is rudderless under the current ownership group.

I did not expect any big signings this year. As WilleD says, next year should show some movement with big money coming off the books, and hopefully our top prospects get some solid minor league experience under their belts.

  26. Macdog said, on January 27, 2021 at 10:28 am

La Stella doesn’t strike out much, so in this boring HR or K era of hitting, I already like the signing.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on January 27, 2021 at 11:24 am

I’m with the Bean philosophy on OBP,OBP, OBP. It’s as easy as one-two-three for mercy’s sakes. The star of Italia and YaZmaTaZ should be batting second and third. Simple math, there. Who lead’s off? Kat says LaStella should have that role with Dubon second. Without doing the research, I reiterate: Get the 1-2-3 OBP guys dinking and thinking, the pitcher fretting and sweating and then send in the Bore Core to square up and get some ribbies.

So now we’re down to cleanup, enforcer and scrambler: 4-5-6. Anyone got suggestions of the particular order? If no DH in NL #9 is obviously the pitcher or PHer. So who bats 7th and 8th.

Anyone here brass-assed enough to trot out a projected lineup via the metrics I’ve suggested?

      • djloo27 said, on January 27, 2021 at 11:39 am

I’ll tell you this much. I can’t stomach a plodder like Belt hitting second regardless of OBP.
Also not a fan of alternating righties and lefties through the line-up. Overrated nosnsense.
Reminds me of Ralph Kramden’s suggestion of odd & even buses…

    • Macdog said, on January 27, 2021 at 1:35 pm

      Wasn’t that Norton’s idea?

      • djloo27 said, on January 27, 2021 at 3:25 pm

Tough call, Mac. Norton did present it to Mr. Marshall as such, but later confessed that it was just a different name he gave to Ralph’s original idea of “alternate buses”…

  27. Winder said, on January 27, 2021 at 11:46 am

I have a feeling the Giants are gonna be a fun team to watch and follow this year. Everything i have read about our farm system is that we are in fine shape so hopefully we can start to funnel some of those players to our roster in the near future. If we do decide to spend some money I hope it’s all on pitching.

  28. snarkk said, on January 27, 2021 at 11:51 am

It’s a dark chilly day, and sorry, so is my mood about baseball.
Hank Aaron just died, another death in a slew of dying great players from the Golden Age of baseball.
Exacerbating that wound, the annual baseball HOF joke vote is in. This year, more stupid than usual.
Schilling as a human is a dipS, but I give him some credit for telling the HOF to take him off the ballot next year even when this time he was short only 16 or so votes. He then basically told the voting writers that they’re FOS — which is accurate. The whole process is beyond repair.
Baseball seems in a downward trendline to limbo. The game needs some kind of high colonic to what it’s become — boring and unathletic. And, I expect a strike or some other work stoppage action after this season, further damaging it. Sorry for the downer, but I feel like the baseball game that excited and attracted me for most of my life is fading inexorably towards some kind of hockey-like niche sport twilight zone.
BTW, based on his recent list of publicized contributions to people running for office, it looks clear that the Giants main owner likes white supremacists and conspiracy nuts. His excuses for this are no longer believable, if they ever were. Sad commentary on a team that since the Robinson breakthrough, was historically a haven for players of color, and fielded the greatest all around player of all time, a black man from Alabama…

The late vibist and marimba player Bobby Hutcherson would have turned 80 today. I have a lot of his recordings for Blue Note, as a leader and sideman with Joe Henderson Eric Dolphy Cedar Walton McCoy Tyner etc. Did a great all Latin LP Montara with songs by Mongo Santamaria Tito Puente and others, very good.
local jazz station kcsm will host tribute to him this afternoon

    • xoot said, on January 27, 2021 at 4:01 pm

I went to see Hutcherson, mid 70s, soon after he moved to caliif. Curtain rose, bassist, drummer, pianist started playing. Hutcherson struck steel with a mallet and scowled. He tried again. Then he stopped the band and they all walked off the stage in disgust. End of gig. Memorable theater.

Etta James couple years later had a similar problem at a second rate local venue. The sound system actually failed to carry her loudest notes. It sort of crackled. She put down the mic, walked to the edge of the stage and wailed away there, no amp.

    • Bozo said, on January 27, 2021 at 6:28 pm

  32. alleykat69 said, on January 27, 2021 at 5:14 pm

Hmmm 🤔 Joc Pederson another LH outfielder bat? I’m ok with his potential power numbers for HR’s ..low average, lots of K’s but does have .806 slugging pct. and if they keep the archways closed he could go off.
Would not bode well for the GraveDuggar when you have The Dick and Yaz, but hopefully more for my boy Jaylin Davis, they still need the RH athletic player other than Ruf and Slater, I guess we can’t forget about Wasbi Basabe as well..

    • Flavor said, on January 27, 2021 at 5:49 pm
