Go Get Me Some Stafford

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 28, 2021

Steve Young called him generational. Greg Cosell said “I like Jimmy G but Stafford is just better.”

The Niners are still in a window of win time. Assuming everyone comes back healthy next year. I’d trade for Stafford in a SECOND over drafting some QB who may or may not be good in 3 years.

I don’t know what he’d cost, it would be a lot less than Watson or Rodgers. Start with a #1 and then let’s keep talking….

Hard pass on that. He’s too old and fragile. We already have that in Jimmy G. And it wouldn’t be a lot less.

If we are mortgaging the future go with DeSean Watson. I’d still rather trade up for Fields/Lance. That would cost less.

    • Flavor said, on January 28, 2021 at 8:45 am

i’m going with Young and Cosell on this one. And Stafford doesn’t have any major structural problems with his shoulders or knees that would give a team pause about his health.

    • Flavor said, on January 28, 2021 at 8:48 am

do you seriously think Stafford would cost anything close to Watson or Rodgers?

      • unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2021 at 9:58 am

Watson will be more. Rodgers isn’t going anywhere. Still and all, it will be our 1st round pick, maybe another ick aand possibly a player. He’s 33. Sure, he’s a great QB. I just don’t like tying the future to a 33 year old guy.

And yeah, he may play for 8 more years. I just think if we ARE gonna trade, trade for Watson. His upside is much higher than Stafford’s.

  2. alleykat69 said, on January 28, 2021 at 9:02 am

I’m going with Jerry Rice who says :”Why drive a clunker when you can drive a Ferrari”
Watson is the Ferrari that gets you to the SB. I do like Stafford he’s more durable then Unca says
missing only a handful of games in his career ( he’s one tough SOB) but do you want an aging QB
even like Rodgers are even being the Colts who went with Rivers for a bandage fix?
It’s Watson no doubt even if the cost is high..

  3. Flavor said, on January 28, 2021 at 9:26 am

i mean, Jerry’s analogy makes no sense. Stafford is no clunker. He’s been fucked by a dysfunctional front office since he got there. Get him out of Detroit, pair him with Shanny, great things will happen.

  4. unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:06 am

Stafford is no clunker, but he’s no DeSean Watson. lf you are going to make the move, go for Watson. He’s 8 years younger and is mobile.

But I still don’t advocate doing it because he would cost way too much. Who are you willing to lose to get him? Bosa? Warner? Deebo? Our next three 1st round picks? I’d rather trade up for a QB, keep Jimmy one more year, and develop a guy like Trey Lance or Justin Fields for a season or 2.

If either were free agents, I’d be all over it. But the trade scenarios are just too costly. And like I said Rodgers isn’t going anywhere. He’s just doing his usual whining.

    • Flavor said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:18 am

I wouldn’t trade for Watson because he’d cost 3 first round picks and that’s just too much. The 49ers are still in a nice little window. I think Staffy would take us to the promised last once or twice over the next 3 years. Three years is all I’d hope for from that guy and DURING those 3 years I’d be drafting a QB every year and trying to develop the one who showed the most promise. Walsh used to say you should draft at least one QB every year and I think that was good advice.

    Good points all around!
Niners aren’t my team, but I think Stafford is too careless with the football. I love watching him because he is a total Sonny Jurgensen style gunslinger with guts and a great arm, but I would stick with Jimmy G.

  6. alleykat69 said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:17 am

Breaking news..Deshaun Watson has officially requested a trade.

    • djloo27 said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:26 am

Preferably to Jets according to the crap they put out here…

      • unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2021 at 12:51 pm

The Jets?!? Why would they trade when they have a golden spot in the draft?

      • djloo27 said, on January 28, 2021 at 3:06 pm

Lawrence won’t be there. Simple as that.
Pretty sure they’ve seen enough of Darnold…

  7. chipower9 said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:25 am

I am Unca on this one. I don’t want to mortgage the future for Stafford, Watson, or Rodgers. Keep Jimmy G for another year and draft a QB. They also need to find a “quality” back-up QB.

The team has a lot of key pieces that need to be signed. It is going to be a challenge to keep the core together, AND trade picks away for a QB.

I say possibly trade-up, but am not a fan of picks (and possibly existing players) for any of the aforementioned QBs.

    • Flavor said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:48 am

by the time you get that QB you want ready to roll the window might have closed. The time is now. 1-2maybe3 years. Let’s fucking do it NOW.

      • chipower9 said, on January 28, 2021 at 11:09 am

I appreciate your perspective, Flav, but I disagree. I think they can get back to the title game next year AND win it, even with Jimmy G (and keep their draft picks). Jimmy G got them there once, and they should have won that fucking game.

  8. willedav said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:33 am

Niners have pressing needs beside QB—OL DL and CB. Unc will know better than me, but if you give up #1 draft choice, Niners don’t have one for a couple more rounds. I think they get one comp pick at end of 3rd for coach leaving to WFT I’d roll with G who surely knows the score and try and shore up other areas of need.

Nice to see Sonny Jurgensen’s name mentioned by SD, one of my all time fav QBs to watch. Charley Taylor out of ASU, Bobby Mitchell as wideout, Jerry Smith years were awesome.

    • Flavor said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:47 am

the niners have 10 picks in this upcoming draft. And Bosa coming back wll fix the DL immediately.

      • willedav said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:53 am

total yes but iirc few in top 3. DL is an area you always need depth. love Bosa but he can’t play whole game, no team does that. And he could just as easily get hurt any time next season too, like Ford did.
Just don’t think Stafford alone would put them over the top.

    • chipower9 said, on January 28, 2021 at 11:12 am

I respect the differing options, but agree with Willie’s synopsis. I am off the Stafford (or any other QB via trade). That’s my opinion and I’m sticking with it.

  9. Flavor said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:51 am

how about our #1 plus the two 3rd round picks we get for Salah in exchange for Staffy? I’d pull that trigger and I bet Detroit would too

    • willedav said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:55 am

Supposedly 10 teams sniffing around–Lions can bleed them til someone gives up what they want.

  10. alleykat69 said, on January 28, 2021 at 10:56 am

I would go for that for sure.Lions were reported they just want “fair market value” for Stafford, that’s seems decent enough but who knows what the Lions want to do?

  11. willedav said, on January 28, 2021 at 11:13 am

I’d imagine Lions would want a player they can plug into fill many holes they have btw offense and defense. They have Rodgers and GB, plus Bears, and Vikes with Cousins and Cook to contend with. If they’re dumping off star QB I think they would want a proven starter somewhere instead of just picks.
but then I’m not the one obsessed with dumping off the G by any means necessary.

  12. unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2021 at 11:37 am

There are so many teams desperate for QBs that this will likely become a bidding war for Stafford, let alone Watson. I think Detroit wants a player or two in the deal.

The team for the most part is young. They are expensive but young. They need O line help more than anything right now. Run blocking is fone, but McGlinchey is horrible at protecting the right side. He needs to be moved to guard and we need a right tackle.

CB will take care of itself with a better pass rush, but I’d still draft someone in the 3rd round. They may very well go O line with that first pick. Take a QB with the 2nd round pick.

    1st round, No. 12 overall
    2nd round, No. 43 overall
3rd round comp pick for Saleh
    4th round, No. 108 overall
    5th round, No. 139 overall
5th round, No. 157 overall (from NO)
5th round comp pick for Emmanuel Sanders
    6th round, No. 170 overall
7th round, No. 194 overall (from NYJ)
    7th round, No. 204 overall

All I know it that it sure would be nice to see someone who can throw a great long ball. Stafford has had some pretty good Wr’s over the years. Megatron was one of em. If we could get him for Jimmy and next years 2nd + a couple more later rds I would do it in a heartbeat. I would love to see Watson on the team but we just don’t have the ammo that other teams have. I would trade our next 3 1st’s and Jimmy for Watson but I think Texas will get more than that.

  14. alleykat69 said, on January 28, 2021 at 12:11 pm

Texans sure are a screwed up organization, it’s no wonder Watson desperately wants out!
You hire a 65 year old coach David Culley? Who the fuck is David Culley?he will be the oldest coach ever to coach a NFL team) to a 5 year deal? Lol 😂 and decided to pass on KC’s Eric Bienemy 51 which will make the Walrus extremely happy to retain.. No way in hell Watson ever plays another game with this dysfunctional organization.Same with JJ Watts imo..

  15. unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2021 at 12:49 pm

Never been a head coach before. But he’s black! I don’t know. He’s getting accolades from plenty of folks, but who knows? Seems like a weird hire to say the least. Esp with Eric Bienemy out there.

Tell ya one thing, Pete McCulley sucked as the Niner head coach back in the day/

  16. alleykat69 said, on January 28, 2021 at 1:07 pm

Lol 😂 Yeah The ridiculous times with Pete McCulley,Fred O’Conner, and Ken Meyer along with dumbshit GM Joe Thomas made the years insufferable till finally Eddie got his shit together and hired Bill Walsh..

  17. Winder said, on January 28, 2021 at 2:05 pm

Seems like every year the A’s and the Pad’s have a direct pipeline between their clubs. I used to think the A’s FO liked to fuck with the Giants by sending the Pad’s great players at a discount. Don’t know if that is still going on but I think it is.

    • djloo27 said, on January 28, 2021 at 3:12 pm

The old K.C. Athletics were basically the powerhouse Yankees farm system…

      • Winder said, on January 28, 2021 at 4:23 pm

The A’s always seem to come up with talented prospects and have for many years. That has to be superior scouting.

      • alleykat69 said, on January 28, 2021 at 5:18 pm

Yeah you have to admire Billy Beane and his scouting system/staff especially working with a shoestring payroll..
Since 1998 when Beane took over as GM in 23 years they have gone to the postseason 11 times!
        Only 5 teams have more appearances.. Yankees (19) Braves (14) Cardinals (14) Redsox’s (12) Dodgers (12)

      • xoot said, on January 28, 2021 at 6:44 pm

Beanie took over more or less the same time as Sabean. Compare the number of PS games since then the a’s have won to the number the giants have won.

I don’t think beane budgets much for scouting. But maybe scouting means something different these days.

      • unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2021 at 9:18 pm

I mean if I was an A’s fan I’d be royally pissed. If they kept some of the talent they have brought up, you;d think they would have a ring or 4. They’ve reached the playoffs so many times with different teams that would look completely different in 2 years. It’s admirable that they have the coaching staff and front office to do such a good job, but to trade everyone away before having to pay them is awful.

      • xoot said, on January 28, 2021 at 9:46 pm

No rings? Ha. They never get close. No kiss no Vaseline and the a’s are gone.

  18. willedav said, on January 28, 2021 at 5:28 pm

Unc thx for that list on Niners pics. 6 of them are 5th round or later. I notice on your blog 3 guys picked in that range last draft. Mc Kivitz on OL, TE Woerner and wideout J Jennings. any of them wind up contributing?

  19. gianthead said, on January 28, 2021 at 9:12 pm

Stafford hottie wife is a plus…MAGA supporter may not play too well in the Bay. If Watson is gettable then you get him but will be what 3 #1s and Aiyuk or Deebo to get started? I dont follow our defense names that closely. Any big named starter that we could replace? I think Stafford is done…

  20. unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2021 at 9:14 pm

McKivitz looked pretty good when Williams was out.He got some playing time. Woerner played little. Jauan Jennings was hurt most of the year I think.

  21. Irish Kevin said, on January 29, 2021 at 9:38 pm

None of these QB’s that are being thrown around will be worth getting unless the Niners O-line learns what pass protection is, that would be the problem with Stafford, he would become injured just like JG.
