A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

On Second Thought…..

As usual, the calm words of San Dawg have steadied me.

This is like signing a premer free agent. We need to get better before making moves like this.

Feels a tad Longoria-esque to me as well. Over 30. No more Coors Field. Curious to see how this plays out.

Fuuny, I’d checked in on Daniel’s blog yesterday and one of his posts from couple days ago he was really down. Cards hadn’t done anything all winter except non tender K Wong, and at that time hadn’t yet signed the 1 yr deals with Wainwright and Molina. He was really disappointed with GM and FO.

MLBTR says things haven’t been finalized, especially around Arenado’s opt out after this season and fact he retains his no trade; cbs does list prospects headed Rox way. Not to mention of course, could Story be next?

Oh man sad to hear long time A’s and Warriors PA guy Dick Callaghan died Friday morning at age 80. Did Warriors games for 19 years (and over 1,000 with A’s) with distinctive voice, making violation calls like trrrrraveling and toooo many stepsss in addition to calling out player name and sometimes numbers for every basket scored. All of us used to imitate the guy and the way he yelled Purvis! Short! was fantastic.
Really added something extra to games, especially if you were in the arena.

    • Flavor said, on January 30, 2021 at 7:57 am

He was the “shooooooting two” guy?

      • willedav said, on January 30, 2021 at 8:03 am

Yes! This was also day of pregame intros without all the nonsensical screaming and light shows and his were great. Height seasons college number and name, all done with respect for visiting teams too. Even for individual baskets he added a little inflection of reverence and respect for NBA all star players “44 is George Gervin”

  3. willedav said, on January 30, 2021 at 8:13 am

Noticed Mannion got some garbage time minutes the other night when GS lost to Suns, and missed all 4 shots he took. so far in 36 minutes he’s taken 13 shots and hit 3 of them, 2-9 from 3 pt range. Hey he’s still only 19 for another month or so, but I didn’t care for accuracy of shot at college level, and it’s worse in NBA.

Kerr has used half dozen guards to back up Curry (without much success) in order to find anyone that can shoot with some consistency, so the op is there. Maybe after some G league time in their bubble he’ll be better and be on floor little more often. But guys that can’t shoot in NBA have tough go of it.

Free agents are like wine. The really expensive stuff often isn’t better than the $15-30 bottle, but when it is you can tell. Even then, the extra refinement you notice is usually in small increments and inconsistently tied to how much more it costs.

Longoria is signed for two more years for the Giants at a total of $40+ million. I don’t see a place for Arenado on the Giants.

    • Flavor said, on January 30, 2021 at 9:17 am

There was no place for him it was the exotic move that I was jealous of

  6. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 9:17 am

With the return of Posey this season, the full Bore Core is reunited for one last season. And maybe not a whole season if any of them get traded.

    • djloo27 said, on January 30, 2021 at 9:24 am

Will be interesting to see if any of them are moved at the deadline…

      • zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 9:29 am

I could see Belt drawing some deadline interest from a playoff-bound team.

      • zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 9:29 am

        Or a playoff contender.

      • djloo27 said, on January 30, 2021 at 9:34 am

Any of our well paid geezers could help a contender (and themselves) for a couple of months under the right circumstances, I guess…

      • zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 9:39 am

Yeah, as bench players for contenders they each would bring good defense and decent PH capabilities.
They were all All Stars in their day, and now none of them could break into the Dodgers’ starting lineup.
        The march of time.

Still thinking Crawford + salary paid + #3 or 4 O.F. prospect, 3 SS prospect & #4 starter pipeline for Story. Manafort would get a prepaid fill for SS plus three prospects—OR subtract SS & starter and add Will Wilson, who did cost SF a pile in that deal with the Angels to include Cozart. Granted, this is waaaay outside the box, but would Zaidi go there and would owners approve?

      • djloo27 said, on January 30, 2021 at 10:03 am

Stix, I’ve read that one reason for unloading Arenado was so that they’d be able to pay and keep Story…

So as of now, the plan for Bart does not include spending the season tied to and learning from Buster?

    • zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 9:33 am

No, I think they want him to have a full AAA season, whatever that would mean this season.

      • djloo27 said, on January 30, 2021 at 9:43 am

At least he’ll meet some chicks…

The minor leagues will be an interesting concept this season. As more people get vaccinated this summer, attendance in sports in general will probably start to increase. But the world of sports needs to be careful and not over-reach on this too soon.
I won’t be going to any sporting events or concerts in ‘21.

  10. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 10:00 am

The Kings drafted a really good player when they drafted Haliburton. He very likely won’t win Rookie of the Year, but he’s a legit player, with a high basketball IQ. A real basketball player. So refreshing to see. He alone is keeping me interested in the NBA. He doesn’t put up gaudy stats, or do a lot of flashy things; but he does things on the court to help his teammates be better and to win games.

    • Flavor said, on January 30, 2021 at 11:31 am

yes. I wonder if they could trade Fox for a haul?

  11. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 10:03 am

I’m amused that, for only a moment, the Kings have moved ahead of Docic and the Mavs in the standings.

    • zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 10:04 am

      Doncic, I meant.

  12. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 10:07 am

Doncic is not pleased these days:
“Doncic expressed frustration with the poor effort the Mavs have often displayed recently. Dallas, which dropped to 8-11, has been defeated by double digits five times during the skid. The Mavs were dominated in both games of their trip to Utah despite the Jazz missing All-Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell because of a concussion.
“I never felt like this,” said Doncic, who won championships with Real Madrid and the Slovenian national team before beginning his NBA career. “We’ve got to do something, because this is not looking good. We’ve got to step up and just talk to each other and play way better than this. It’s mostly effort.””

    • Flavor said, on January 30, 2021 at 11:30 am

Porzingas has been pretty bad this year.

    • willedav said, on January 30, 2021 at 11:42 am

Can’t stand Doncic. If you lost, it was team effort doesn’t matter what your gaudy numbers show, it wasn’t good enough. 3 years in league he is already this entitled. stfu or go back to Europe

  13. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 10:25 am

I don’t follow college basketball all that much, so I didn’t know Haliburton played for Iowa St. When the Kings drafted him, my response was “who?”
He’s already a fan favorite amongst Kings fans. It’s encouraging to see how fans still respond to an “old school” player like that. One of the Kings broadcasters compared him to Michael Cooper. Cooper wasn’t one of the stars of the Lakers, but he did things on the court to help his team be better.

Iowa St. are the Cyclones. Who knew?

      • willedav said, on January 30, 2021 at 10:39 am

I dig the cyclones and they send lot of guys to NBA. Hornacek probably one of better ones.

      • zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 11:00 am

        I had no idea.

  14. Carstie Clausen said, on January 30, 2021 at 11:42 am

    Enjoy the basketball stuff, guys.

Personally, I could give a fat, furry, flying fart for NBA since that day in early ’60 I paid 75 cents in real silver coinage at the Minneapolis Armory to watch Elgin Baylor and the REAL Lakers give me 6-bits worth of entertainment.

As I see it, only baseball is the game for average guys who are not either built like a runaway locomotive (as found in the NFL lines) or totally hyperthyroidal and/or with glutei galore as seems to be the case in the NBA. Back in the day the Giants sported surprisingly athletic “Big Daddy” Rick Reuschel (built like a cross between a hippo, a pear and a pumpkin) and dwarfish Brett Butler, who could steal you blind, bunt you baffled and make the plays in the field. Only game for which that odd-couple could have been highly contributing semi-stars was baseball.

A pity that the NBA has devolved into becoming a poor excuse for a reincarnation of the Harlem Globetrotters. Now that bunch made for true entertainment. Magical, even.

  15. alleykat69 said, on January 30, 2021 at 11:49 am

I wouldn’t mind the Giants making a move for SS Trevor Story who will be a F/A next year.Would be a great RH slugger and a stop gap before Lucky Luciano is ready. You think he could also move to 3rd when Longo moves on..

Joel Rosario and Flavien Prat return to riding at Santa Anita today with 4 mounts each. Last weekend in their absence leading rider Juan Hernandez, Umberto Rispoli (second) and Abel Cedillo all had 2 winners Sunday.
See what happens today; big race later featuring Hot Rod Charlie and other top 3 yr olds.

    • Flavor said, on January 30, 2021 at 1:59 pm

i’m really interested in seeing how King Guillermo does today. He should a lot of promise last year as a 3 year old then just kinda petered out. I’m rooting for him tho, he’s owned by Victor Martinez (former baseball player) and when he won a Derby Prep race last year at 50-1 I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone get so excited. Winning a horse race will do that to you

      • Flavor said, on January 30, 2021 at 2:45 pm

Dead last. That horse had one great race in him and that was it. If happens. Especially to 3 yr olds

  17. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 12:23 pm

“I wonder if they could trade Fox for a haul?”

That won’t happen. He is being marketed as the face of the franchise. I like Fox a lot, but he forces things sometimes and turns the ball over. He still needs to grow in basketball IQ. He has shown growth, and he buffed up his body a bit in the off-season to better withstand the season-long pounding. It’s the nature of the point guard position these days, though. The PG these days is expected to drive to the basket a lot, get fouled, and shoot a lot of free throws. I don’t like it, but it’s the legacy of LeBron and Harden and 5-out basketball.

    • Flavor said, on January 30, 2021 at 2:01 pm

can they play Haliburton and Fox together? I thought Haliburton is coming off the bench because Fox starts (but I could be wrong about that)

  18. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 12:40 pm

The most bummer thing about 5-out NBA ball is watching centers at the 3-point line shooting 3s. Just about all of them are understandably lousy at it. I wonder if the NBA will evolve back into more low-post play at some point.

  19. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 12:42 pm

I remember Nellie putting Bol at the 3-point line. And Bol would shoot from there once in a while. I guess Nellie was ahead of his time.

  20. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 12:48 pm

Stix, I don’t expect the NBA to be the Globetrotters, but the NBA did use to have more Globetrotter-esque moments in a game. Teams ran plays, and there were more cool and tricky passes in a game. I remain convinced that basketball fans, overall, get more joy from great passing that leads to baskets than they do from great one-on-one moves that lead to baskets. There’s something deeply pleasing about watching great teamwork in basketball.

  21. blade3colorado said, on January 30, 2021 at 1:05 pm

Rockies aren’t idiots, as they are trading Arenado at the exact moment they observed his stats dropping like a rock (see his home/away splits for the truncated 2020 season versus the outstanding 2019 season . . . totally different player). Similar to Tulo, they are trading him at his epic descent and exact age (29) Tulo was traded. Also similar to Tulo, his body is worn out from the back and forth high altitude/sea level shuffle fatigue. Frankly, he’s a far, far older 29 versus anyone else who hasn’t played a full season, much less a career at Coors.

Coupled with the aforementioned, since hiring GM Jeff Bridich in 2014, the Rockies don’t keep players past their milk expiration date a la Helton and the Giants with the Bore Core.

Blade baby! Back in time for the SB!

      • blade3colorado said, on January 30, 2021 at 2:51 pm

You’re not too far off Flav, especially after this week of snow, freezing temperatures, power outages, intermittent WiFi, and “all the time” one bar IPhone connectivity in a 5G world. Such is mountain living.

Similarly, I alluded to this other subject on the Flap months ago, so probably not a surprise that I have become a full fledged gun owner and am working on my ccw permit in this conservative county I now live in. Zumiee and Chi already know about this . . . Specifically, that I am so concerned about the 74 million plus looney toons in this country, coupled with the pandemic – that my new hobby has replaced world travel. Consequently, the last 5-6 months have been a catalyst for me to learn anything and everything about firearms, e.g., firearms safety course certificate, Hunting safety course certificate, hunting license, and of course, studying for the aforementioned concealed carry permit. When the weather is decent, I target shoot every week at the El Dorado National Forest, 4 miles from my mountain home.*

So yeah, “Overlook Hotel” may be spot on. By the by, if you want photos of my arsenal, let me know. My most recent purchase was a Beretta 1301 semi-auto shotgun (fastest action by 36% versus any manufacturer).

By the by, I get my 1st part COVID-19 vaccine on Monday. Will work on my expired passport after I receive part 2 of the vaccine and hopefully, plan a trip to see my daughter in Vietnam afterwards (albeit, at the moment, they want nothing to do with the USA).

        * PS Please do not share this shit on FB (which I rarely frequent anymore). Don’t want mom getting alarmed. lol

fangraphs had talk with hitting coach of Rox Dave Magadan a week ago. He talked about how easy it is to get bloop hits at Coors, whack breaking balls that don’t break and be aggressive. then, to adjust to road games that are completely different. Very interesting, and he is contact guy first and foremost.

You know, the GD fans might have to think about a Sactopalooza to see their guy play. Chi Zum come a long way to the O, it would only be couple hours or so for us in Bay Area to catch up to rest of northern brethren, once fans allowed into Raley..

  22. alleykat69 said, on January 30, 2021 at 2:52 pm

Yeah most players that leave Coors field have drop offs with stats.
But one guy that played there DJ LaMaluei ( sp) has never been effected and is even flourishing more in NY.
The guy is a hitting machine,so consistent with a .305 lifetime average..
Nice to see you back Blade, lots of snow ❄️ in Pollock Pines from these last few storms?

    • blade3colorado said, on January 30, 2021 at 3:13 pm

Not where I am at AK . . . 3500 feet and change (maybe). My home is two miles from Jenkinson Lake if that helps. Seriously, this white shit is like concrete. Nothing like the fluffy stuff I had in Colorado. Consequently, the 6-8 inches I had was more than enough, coupled with the significant freezing rain. A few hundred feet up, I understand they possibly had upwards of 10 feet. Dunno for certain.

Thank you Willie. Yeah, I really want the 2 shots out of the way, so I can live my life. Don’t get me wrong, I like my own company, but being cooped up for almost a year is crazy. I did have a lady friend visit me from Colorado for almost a week about a month ago, but other than that, I don’t take many risks . . . This is hard on my folks in Sunnyvale (I skipped Thanksgiving and Christmas), but I made them understand that social distancing is part of the equation. I hope you and yours are well Willie. Stay safe. I spoke with snarkk quite a few times and it pisses me off how inconsiderate some people can be (e.g., loss of his mother in law). Anyway, glad you’re doing well.

  23. Winder said, on January 30, 2021 at 3:40 pm

blade- It’s an amazing world once you get into firearms. To me it is one of the most relaxing things to do. I used to go to the range 3 or 4 times a week. If I had a bad day at work or any other kind of stress once I got to the range after about 10 minutes of shooting all my problems just seemed to dissolve. It was meditation to me. It’s great to take all the courses you can and if you really get into it start reloading your own ammo that is a trip in itself. I rarely shoot any longer but for a time it was a fantastic way to spend some time. I replaced it with gardening as a meditation.

    • blade3colorado said, on January 30, 2021 at 4:33 pm

Oh wow! Spot on Winder . . . and not only target shooting, but field stripping and cleaning my firearms too. Quite Zen and relaxing. I am an outdoors person anyway. This is my 3rd mountain home. When I was younger, it was nothing for my 1st wife and I to back pack the Trinity Alps or go camping in the Lassen area for 2 weeks (not one week, but 2) . . . Sheesh, if I would have been allowed a longer vacation or had additional leave, it would have been longer.

Similarly, as you pointed out, there’s nothing like shooting a 9mm or even plinking cans with my Ruger Takedown rifle. Ironically, I have gone a number of times with my neighbor, a Trumpster, We NEVER discuss politics (frankly, I am very circumspect about revealing my liberal leanings, especially with my neighbors – again, all Trumpsters). I digress though, him and I have a great time shooting our guns. He’s a good guy. We even went hunting recently, squirrels and rabbits (still in season until tomorrow I think). Squirrel and rabbit taste like chicken too. lol

Yes. That has been happening more, and especially in 4th quarter crunch time. Walton loves having Haliburton on the court in the final minutes of close games. He’s under control out there, makes good decisions, and plays terrific defense. He’s also made some big shots, although he’s not a prolific-type scorer (yet.)

    • Flavor said, on January 30, 2021 at 4:04 pm

      • zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 4:17 pm

The Kings’ backcourt is crowded with Fox, Hield, and Haly all in the mix. Hield is an enigma to me. So inconsistent. Great one game, terrible the next. I don’t get it.
Right now, Haly is averaging 28 minutes a game. That has to go up.

  26. zumiee said, on January 30, 2021 at 4:25 pm

I’m so stuck in the past sometimes.
I can only wonder what was taking place on that field 50 years ago.
      I know that’s ridiculous…

Not ridiculous, Loo. Even now, after 17 years here, nearly every day I’m going around the city, I go past key sites you’ve seen from pics and videos of life during wartime here: Independence Palace (former S. Vietnam presidential palace), still have a couple of the north’s original tanks on the grounds from when they broke down the gates on April 30th ’75, so many other sites too, and I always picture those places from what was happening back then…

Rams gave up TWO 1st round picks? And a 3rd? They will regret this. Bank that
