A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Finishing Touches on Last Place

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 5, 2021

Ok, now that we’ve added Littell and Lame-onte Wade to the foundation of Brebbia and the rest of his cohorts I’d say we’re just about ready to fire up a run at the NL West crown, aye?

Nay.

Kruk was on KNBR yesterday talking up how excited *ALL* Giants fans are to watch the return of Posey and the final season of the intact Bore Core. I just chuckled to myself. Hey, I know it’s a throwaway year but I have zero interest in watching boring players play baseball. I’m down with Posey showing up at a reunion party for a tip of the cap to the crowd.

But watching him play baseball?

Not excited for that, Kruk.

      3 white stockings always a dead giveaway…

  2. willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 6:57 am

After who we saw behind plate last year it’s not gonna take much to improve the position.

  3. willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 7:26 am

Btw, those of us who attended game on jun 28 2019 saw Shaun Anderson’s last W. That night he went 5.2 allowed 7 hits 2 runs walked 1 K’d 3. His record at that time was 3-2 and ERA was 3.86. Couldn’t finish 6th without allowing run to score iirc and was pulled, then giants increased lead and pen held on.

final stats for 2019 however: 3-5 with ERA of 5.44 So Jun 28 was about end of Shaun Anderson highlight reel.
2020 pitched 15 innings all in relief gave up 3 bombs walked 12. FIP was 5.73 WHIP 1.43

    • Flavor said, on February 5, 2021 at 7:50 am

      and that’s why he’s flipped for Lame-onte

    • Bozo said, on February 5, 2021 at 8:22 am

      File under useless info.
When Zaidi took over in 2019, we had 6 guys under 30 who started games for us, 4 are gone (Bum, DRod, Anderson and Suarez), Webb is still considered a starter (I think) and Menz has found a home in the pen.

  4. willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 7:57 am

One of hallmarks of Dogs, under Friedman and Zaidi, was distinct lack of expensive multi year contracts. One of the few they gave out, to Pollock, hasn’t turned out well and he was being platooned a lot last season.
So I wonder how Z is going to approach the FA market next year. Only player he has signed to multiple seasons is LaStella for next 3 and this is Flores last year too.

Sure Giants will have $$ to spend, but to get a top end difference maker replacement for Crawford these are options: Baez Correa Lindor Seager Semien Simmons Story. First, most are gonna be asking for $$$ in general range of what Crawford makes and in some cases more, and second they aren’t likely signing for less than 3-4 years either.

    • djloo27 said, on February 5, 2021 at 8:07 am

      Lindor won’t see FA.
Mets will lock him up for life…

      • willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 8:19 am

yeah good call Loo. think they get Bauer too? Where would they be on lux tax if he cost $30 mil, or does Cohen care?

  5. willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 8:25 am

Mets supposedly set deadline for Bauer in/out of their offer, of 12 EST so we should know soon whether he takes it or not. 3/$100-110 with deferred $$,

  6. alleykat69 said, on February 5, 2021 at 8:46 am

I’d be all over getting Trevor Story in a Giants uniform next year. The RH power hitter they desperately need and besides SS I’m sure he can play 3rd as well. He could be are latest version of Jeff Kent pounding baseballs off and over the cartoon cars..

    • Flavor said, on February 5, 2021 at 9:23 am

I’m not so sold on story’s power away from Nepal

  7. James said, on February 5, 2021 at 9:11 am

Best case, SF looks like a 500 team to me. A few of the off-season moves will pay off, a few of last year’s “surprises” will disappoint. I’m bummed that it’ll be an all TV season again.

  8. Winder said, on February 5, 2021 at 9:57 am

I think the biggest need for Posey is to work with our pitching staff. It was obvious that last year Bart or the other two catches we used really didn’t know what they were doing. Very inconsistent play behind the plate. It wouldn’t bother me if they sent posey to Sacramento for the year.

    • alleykat69 said, on February 5, 2021 at 10:34 am

Winder why in the world would they ever send Posey to Sacramento?
He’s still one of the best catchers in baseball especially handling a pitching staff.
I actually think he will be pretty good this year after taking last year off to totally heal his body..

      • xoot said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:11 am

I wonder if the coaching staff or Kapler will even mention the possibility of extending one leg while behind the plate?

      • Carstie Clausen said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:30 am

Betcha he was thinking Bart and Posey slipped in.

      • Carstie Clausen said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:34 am

Precisely on Buster managing the staff and also being the field-captain. He should certainly hit better than last season’s assembly and who knows, perhaps his many months of resting the bod and easing the everyday stresses will bring him back as a good doubles hitter and a relatively high OBP. Return of power is iffy, so if his ego doesn’t get in the way I could see him 6th or 7th in the lineup.

      • Winder said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:41 am

No, I don’t think they would send Posey to Sac. unless it was for rehab. I just said it wouldn’t bother me if they did. I think it would do a world of good for our young staff.

      • djloo27 said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:47 am

Twin would crucify you for that one, Winder…

      • Winder said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:51 am

lol. Yeah I bet he would. I kind of think this year is a wash anyway. I am pretty sure our minors have the know how and talent to teach our young pitchers. But I think Posey could really get through to em.

  9. Flavor said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:49 am

they’re already so much better than us this doesn’t bother me at all

    • Winder said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:54 am

      It fucking figures.

      • Winder said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:56 am

Baur wants a ring. I hope he chokes.

      • Flavor said, on February 5, 2021 at 12:23 pm

i mean, I give him credit. This is what he said he was going to do. He just wants to try to go to teams that win rings from here on out. He’s got opt out clause after yr 1 and 2. He’s ring collecting at this point.

    • willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 12:46 pm

Limited market. If Mets weren’t to his liking this was bound to happen. Sucks though and does give Dogs someone new to dislike.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on February 5, 2021 at 5:08 pm

This pickup by the LaBumbo$$$ is the ultimate limit. Maybe they should change their name to the LaLaLand All-$$$tars. It would serve them right if a line-drive smacked off Bauer’s funny-bone about a third of the way through the season.

The current luxury tax is a total joke. There should be severious penalties for scooping up all the talent. Most heavily penalized would be the two prime media centers, LA and NYC—basically the Bum$ and the YankMee$. Nephew came up with an idea. For each year over the limit, the luxury tax they paid the first go-round would be doubled. So $7M the first one, $14 the second, $28 the third and by year four $56M would actually have some bite. At the same time they would be excused from 1st round draft starting out 2nd round added the next year and so on.

Concordingly, teams which continually scrape the bottom would also be penalized. There should be a “cry-poverty” tax, where after say, three years not being at least at half the L.T. teams payroll; the league would pull their rights to the franchise, say for whatever it cost them in the first-place and then make that franchise available, first to a consortium made up of residents of the state and region where the team plays, following the Green Bay Packers model of a fan-based cooperative ownership arrangement,

The major media, again based in NYC and LA, have massively messed up baseball with their constant favoritism for those major market organizations. I detest the pair of aforementioned teams, mainly because their resource base pretty much eliminates competition most seasons. As long as this media-massaging keeps happening, the game will slide deeper and deeper down the big-swirly. It’s doubtful that I’m anywheres close to being alone in detesting the mass-media sports bias AND those two despicable organizations living off the fat of the land and abusing and debasing the history of the game. Little wonder baseball is rarely referenced any more as being “the National Pastime.”

      • djloo27 said, on February 5, 2021 at 6:26 pm

But Stix, Yanks have one trophy since 2000 and Bums just broke 32 year dry spell…

  10. unca_chuck said, on February 5, 2021 at 11:52 am

I don’t think Posey has any illusions about his power at this point. The hope is he has to earn his way into the 4-5 spot.

  11. willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 1:30 pm

Signing Bauer does cost Dogs early pick since Reds had given him a QO. Also nets them currently $7mil lux tax hit, maybe meaning no more Turner.

    • xoot said, on February 5, 2021 at 1:35 pm

Isn’t the lux tax likely to end now with the current cba?

    • Carstie Clausen said, on February 5, 2021 at 5:12 pm

Aaah, the Luxury Tax of $7M to the Googs owners is nothing more than chump-change. That clan was born with silver spoons up their collective asswholes.

  12. Macdog said, on February 5, 2021 at 1:39 pm

    Fuck Bauer.

  13. sandog said, on February 5, 2021 at 1:46 pm

Bauer news bums me out. I’d rather not see them win more rings and be even a tougher matchup for us.

    • willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 2:23 pm

yes, do hope we can light him up at least once this season. Frist opt out I’d say highly unlikely to happen so that’s means 2 years at least. How many teams are there that would give him a better deal than he already has?

      • Carstie Clausen said, on February 5, 2021 at 5:16 pm

Maybe just for fun with the LaBumbos, the Giants should make an offer the Twins cannot refuse for Max Kepler. Over three consecutive outings, Kepler hit SIX consecutive dingers off Bauer. Total ownage. He’d make for a great cringe-factor in orange and black, likely keeing Bauer rattled over the whole game. So far as I know Bauer’ s feat established a majorleague record.

      • djloo27 said, on February 5, 2021 at 5:54 pm

        I love that idea, Stix!
And Puig would be another inexpensive way to fuck with them.

Monmouth Hawks on ESPNU tonight, at Manhattan Jaspers.
Sharks game will have Drew Remenda back on pregame and btw periods commentary.

    • Macdog said, on February 5, 2021 at 5:22 pm

Didn’t know that about MU, beats watching the Nets on pace to give up their usual 140.

  15. Bozo said, on February 5, 2021 at 4:27 pm

Yeah, the Dodgers get Bauer but we got Brebbia, so eat that LA.

  16. Winder said, on February 5, 2021 at 4:29 pm

I just read where Frank Gore said he wants to go back to the Niners in 2021. I know he wouldn’t get much if any significant # of runs per game but i would still bet on him for some short yard situations. Then i would hire him to be a coach. I always liked it when the Niners brought back some of their greats.

And, unless Posey wants to play elsewhere I would wrap him up as a coach also.

  17. James said, on February 5, 2021 at 4:45 pm

Hey, Bauer’s FB is only .8 mph better than Littell’s.

    • xoot said, on February 5, 2021 at 5:42 pm

but the spin rate, the spin rate.

      • James said, on February 5, 2021 at 6:32 pm

Cut Rate would be a good nickname.

  18. djloo27 said, on February 5, 2021 at 5:02 pm

The healed up hip, long rest and juiced ball should get Buster up to about 15 bombs, I’d say…

    • Carstie Clausen said, on February 5, 2021 at 5:18 pm

Yeah, sounds about right. Would segue in nicely with say, 40 doubles and one whole, entire triple—which would match perfectly his stolen base total.

      • unca_chuck said, on February 5, 2021 at 6:05 pm

If he hits double digits, I’d think it’s a win.

Gore here? I’d do it in a nano-second. Heard an interview with Tom Rathman about his retirement and they asked him about working with Gore and he was getting choked up about how strong he felt about the man. Total admiration for the guy. He’s up there in the top 5 favorite Niners. He can be a payer-coach.

Is it out of the question to entertain offers for Yaz at some point?
Bored as we may be by the geezers, there’s gonna be a lot of roster spots to fill when they’re gone.
The talent gap between us and the So Cal teams is deep and wide…

Niners just lost one off the retired numbers list–Charlie krueger dead at 84. Used to see him when I worked in Redwood City early 70s, really nice man.

    • unca_chuck said, on February 5, 2021 at 9:36 pm

I’m sure i told you this before but my stepfather used to work at Towne Ford in RC right next to Harry’s Hof Brau. When the Niners used to practice at Sequoia they would end up there all the time. He sold some cars to some of them, snd got to know a lot of them. He got me a team ball signed by the 1972 team. Wish I still had that. Met Bob St Clair, Ted Kwalick, some of the other guys. All the linemen loved the place.

    • Winder said, on February 5, 2021 at 9:41 pm

So Sad to hear about Charlie Krueger. If there was a poster boy tough as nails 49er he was it. RIP

  21. Flavor said, on February 5, 2021 at 6:54 pm

15 home runs for Buster? Is that a joke? Buster may run into 6 home runs MAYBE this season and that’s if he plays 162.

    • willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 6:59 pm

mm remind me again how many they got last year from C? He puts on the uniform he automatically upgrades the position over everyone they had last year. am i right or what?
Man when you no longer have Posey around to trash…

When I think about the Giants as currently constructed, I must admit that I feel a little sad, because I feel like I don’t even know the team anymore. My fault, of course, for not paying attention as much as I used to, but still. If Giants management personnel and all the current players were sprinkled in a crowd of folks walking down the street, I doubt I could pick out more than a handful that I would even recognize. Nevermind barely knowing the GM’s name and definitely no idea what the guy even looks like. As Cheryl Crow once sang, “Now something has gone missing, and it makes me kinda sad”….

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 5, 2021 at 7:04 pm

Actually, he’s one I do know and even know what he looks like. The other guy. The GM. Somebody Harris, I think. (Ok, I do know his name. Just so many of them seem like generic nobodies to me)…

  24. willedav said, on February 5, 2021 at 7:04 pm

Tromp hit 4 HRs on way to .213 BA and .645 OPS.
As we all know that was 4 more than Bart, who had OPS of .609.
0 bombs for Heine, who hit .190 with .506 OPS
Giants have issues, sure, but C will definitely be an improved position, exciting or not.
    Case closed

  25. xoot said, on February 5, 2021 at 7:27 pm
