A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Eve of 55

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 6, 2021

I’m not engaging in *whataboutism* with Buster. Of course the other options suck. Them sucking doesn’t make him any better. He just sucks less than them. As Xoot noted, his value will be with the pitchers who will instantly jizz when he throws down those magical fingers. But 15 bombs? Lol, no chance.

Our offense is average and our pitching stinks. With the current group I don’t see how we sniff .500 this year. And that’s BEFORE the Bore Core starts checking in with the aged injuries that you know will be coming this season.

So I wasn’t able to get much business with my SB bet. San Dawg did take the Chiefs -3.5 (for $34.60). Nobody else wants some of that?

How many HRs Giants get out of C position is lot less important imo than other factors that go into playing that position, ala SS and CF. Zero problem with singles to RF by Posey or anyone else that plays there.

Imminent last days of BC, where sentiment is don’t let clubhouse doors hit you yada yada, come with a rather large caveat. While Giants might be lot less boring, the real question is will they be any better? Can we find a 3b to be league average 20 bomb hitter that is sound defensively? Crawford and Belt put up great small sample size offensive numbers at plate and both are still good defensively. FA SS will be very expensive and unlikely to settle for 2 yr deals.

who Giants have in system ready to play ML ball within a year or two, and how they address filling in gaps left by BC is going to be major issue without even talking about pitching. And compounded by fact that at top of division are 2 very talented teams with MVP caliber players.
It’s one thing to be rid of these guys, quite another to field a better team and replace them.

I can already hear the screaming when they re-sign Crawford and/or Belt to one year deals.

      • djloo27 said, on February 6, 2021 at 8:27 am

The pitching staff scares me the most.
Where are the up and comers?
        Who are we excited about?

        Not gonna happen

    • Bozo said, on February 6, 2021 at 10:04 am

Forgetting Posey’s salary at that position, I think the biggest issue with his lack of power will be if they continue to bat him in the middle of the order. Maybe it was just a Bochy thing, we’ll see.

The pessimistic take on 2021 is certainly legit, and I wouldn’t bet against it. A view towards the happy path sees that 500 was achieved with last year’s roster, albeit in a shortened season. Does this year’s seem worse right now than 2020’s? I’d argue that at the moment, the roster looks improved. As for the other teams, even with Bauer, LA isn’t going to play better than .717 baseball and SD repeating somewhere around 617 seems about right. Arizona and Colorado aren’t exactly loaded.

Seems like 75% of who I hear live or on the radio like the Bucs with the 3.5.
This game will be decided by the Chiefs D.
That is my in depth analysis…

Thanks I appreciate that you and Polly and chai along with some others appreciate what I do here. by the way as of right now 80% of the money in Vegas is going on the chiefs minus three and a half just FYI

Rumors, rumors, rumors. The official MLB rumor mill has it that SF is sniffing the jocks and kicking the tires on Odorizzi. Will believe that when I see it. The Cards are hot for his haunches and the Twins want him back, likely on their own terms. Not that our skinflint owners can’t afford him and maybe even give him two years. After all, it’s just $$$ and Johnson has it slithering down the back of his BVDs.

Realistically, the guy would make for a passable #3….if he is physically with it. Higher ceiling? Doubtful. Though he might make for a better choice there than the other two pickups, Scaffolding and Whazisname. No probable ace in sight, so Gausman gets tagged for the role. Any probables for deuce? So here’s where I walk waaaay out on the plank. By midseason Webb will have gotten his act together and fills that slot adequately if not quite fully.

So, at best, the rotation is make-do, with Cueto (largely because of seniority and his year’s ago status,) will get slotted as the #2…initially.

Will the bullies hold? No proven closer, while setup roles may be passable. And then with the mass of minor-league contracts, there does happen to be a lot of them.

Can the Bore Corps sustain last season’s heroics? Maaaaaybe. Likely Belt will not quite be ready for the opener, so defense at 1B falters a bit. Any hope for Longo? Likely, his best-by date was a couple years back. Saddled with him. Crawdaddy? Who knows? Maybe he will go all out for honor and pride—as he does happen to be a local boy. Outfield looks productive and reserves may be the best in years. So Z & H did improve things at the fringes. Seeing Heliot Ramos up shortly after the Break, replacing one of the fragiles.

YazMaTaz may shine and Posey will hold the gang together. Just maybe, largely by beating up on the Snakes and Rox, the Giants may crawl to .500. As for the SoCal monsters, I would imagine that a .333 record against them would be the ceiling, with nearly nada vs the Dagos and once again, a bit of hard-fought success vs the Googenheimers.

The Giants are generally among the league leaders in tire kicking and jock sniffing…

    • alleykat69 said, on February 6, 2021 at 10:31 am

      Yes they are Loo,
They don’t even kick tires anymore just the rusted out rims at a junkyard..

  7. djloo27 said, on February 6, 2021 at 10:34 am

Wasn’t there a recent season when our rotation was known here as the “Five Fives”?
Musta been without Bum and Cueto at the time…

The coinage occurred on the previous thread. Couldn’t resist.

        Rookie DRod

The Kings catch grief for not drafting Doncic, so it amuses me that the Kings are 2 games above the Mavs at the moment. Hey, I’ll enjoy it while I can. 🙂

    • willedav said, on February 6, 2021 at 11:42 am

Exactly. Zum, it wasn’t after his 7th season as pro before Curry went from averaging 23-24 a game to where he was at 29-30. For Fox and others, more they play and smarter they get, doable.

  9. djloo27 said, on February 6, 2021 at 11:52 am

Tomorrow the world will learn the name Derrick Nnadi.
    Hopefully for a good reason…

    • Flavor said, on February 6, 2021 at 11:55 am

that’s another reason I like TB and the points. Aren’t the Chefs missing 2 tackles tomorrow????

Yes. Schwartz been out for months.

Loo,,,Rachael Luba is Yasiel Puig’s sports agent client now!
This lady’s company Luba Sports is going to rock the baseball world.
Obviously very bright, Bar exam, check, Forbes list for people under 30,check,
Gets Bauer signed back in 2019 for 17.5 then he wins the CY young and she turns
that into 40 mil plus richest in baseball, not to shabby at all… Still would like to see if she could get the Giants involved with Puig cause they’re isn’t going to be any RH power besides small contributions from Wilmer,Barrels and Longo..

    • xoot said, on February 6, 2021 at 4:31 pm

Bar exam don’t mean shit. Even idiots pass it eventually. All that practice.

What’s your best super bowl story?

I attended SB One. I was fifteen. Twin and Old Seals Fan were there too. Older.

I held the binoculars when Jim Taylor had his showdown with that huge KC def lineman. Retaliating for an earlier stuff, Taylor flattened the big guy like a cartoon character bulldozing a cat and gained many yards.

The half time music was Al Hirt. Honestly. Viet Nam war raging, someone pompously prayed on the sound system and then they released hundreds of doves of peace. Terrified pigeons, really. The LA Coliseum has very steep stands. The birds couldn’t figure out how to escape. They circled the arena endlessly, anxiously shitting on everyone with shitty seats.

    Green Bay won.

    • James said, on February 6, 2021 at 5:07 pm

I once owned an Al Hirt cassette.

    • willedav said, on February 6, 2021 at 5:47 pm

wow Ray Scott was awesome. Twin must have had great sports memories traveling around in those days.

      • xoot said, on February 6, 2021 at 6:14 pm

I think he deployed, stupidly, for viet nam soon after that game.

      • djloo27 said, on February 6, 2021 at 6:27 pm

Bet you didn’t know he was on the SB winning Chiefs in ’70…

  18. willedav said, on February 6, 2021 at 5:39 pm

Almost complete waste of day was the one where Saints upset Peyton. Our b-ball league which always took that Sunday off decided to schedule games that day even though they were scrambling to get refs (each team responsibility to pay them). We drove to old San Mateo HS that afternoon, short a couple guys included our only real post and got waxed. Listened to start of game on way home, and league realized this was dumb thing to do.

San dawg’s gone dark on me. Starting to wonder if he’s thinking about bailing on this bet. Say it ain’t so, Dawg

  20. zumiee said, on February 6, 2021 at 6:16 pm

    Kings win!
That big dude on Denver scored 50! He’s a FORCE. But the Kings kept the other Nuggets under reasonable control and won a close one.

  21. zumiee said, on February 6, 2021 at 6:19 pm

Haliburton made some big shots in the 4th quarter. I don’t know who’s going to win Rookie of the Year, but Haly should finish high in the voting, if he avoids a big injury.

    • zumiee said, on February 6, 2021 at 6:25 pm

I just looked this up. And odds-maker’s view so far:
      LaMelo Ball -133
      Tyrese Haliburton +350
      Anthony Edwards +400
      James Wiseman +600

  22. willedav said, on February 6, 2021 at 6:23 pm

Dwight Powell highlight. Other Stanford guys…Lopez twins, KZ Okpala on Heat… Might be couple more next year.

  23. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 6, 2021 at 7:03 pm

I was always interested a bit in where Twin had served here in VN during the war. He didn’t like to talk about it much, but he did share some things. He seemed to have spent most of his time in the Mekong delta area, not sure if it was swift-boating or other patrol-oriented activities. VC had a couple key strongholds in the Mekong, I think Michael saw his share of nasty.

    • xoot said, on February 6, 2021 at 7:08 pm

He probably did. Agent orange killed him, though.

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 6, 2021 at 7:13 pm

New lawsuit bears watching: a 70-something VNmese now in France apparently meets all requirements necessary to sue for damages from A. Orange, the first time US companies are being sued by a VNmese individual. US gov’t has given money to VNmese over the years, but not the companies who made the stuff.

  24. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 6, 2021 at 7:20 pm

“This game will be decided by the Chiefs D.” Yep, could be. One of the simplest and best defensive strategies I remember in a SB game was Cowboys-Broncos in ’78: Landry knew Craig Morton well, knew that he was old and immobile, and focused the ‘Boys D on harrassing and thumping Morton in the pocket. Too Tall Jones, Randy White, etc. just took Morton right out of the game, Denver never had a chance. I don’t know much about KC’s defensive line, but that’s what I would do if I was Reid. Brady is more mobile than Morton was, but a sustained pounding would take its toll.

    • Macdog said, on February 6, 2021 at 7:45 pm

It worked twice for the Giants. 🙂

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on February 6, 2021 at 8:01 pm

Yes it did. The SB of New England’s “perfect” season, I remember Brady just had a look in his eyes so different from usual when he’d come up to the line, a look of bewilderment and “oh shit”.

  25. alleykat69 said, on February 6, 2021 at 8:11 pm

Reason to root against Tom Brady?
He loses this game he ties Buffalo Bills Jim Kelly
for the most SB losses at 4!!

    • djloo27 said, on February 6, 2021 at 8:16 pm

He should have at least 5 already but that’s whole other debate…

  27. alleykat69 said, on February 6, 2021 at 8:15 pm

Tough loss for the Warriors, down 18-2 to start the game battled all the way back to even take a lead but Mavs prevail in the end 134-132..Curry 57 points in the loss..
