Statue?
I’m trying to get into Reddit but I don’t really like it. Twitter is my place. The layout just makes more sense to me. Anyway, came across this thread, do you guys support? Honestly, as much as I love Barry, I don’t think a statue is necessary. I don’t know, maybe something in the new landscape that Baer is building. Certainly not situated where Mays is. Thoughts?
I like Reddit a lot, I mostly hang out in the liberal gun rooms (I know that’s probably an oxymoron), and the financial subReddit some of you might be familiar with now, WallStreetBeats. I especially like the “Losers” sub section of Wallstreetbeats. Hilarious, but sad stories about imbeciles “betting” on Gamestop and other piece of shit stocks.
I use to hate Twitter, but that “word and subject” we’re not supposed to mention here is why I go now. Getting increased views and likes because of it. Sort of a firebrand there against ANYTHING Tr***p. lol
Comments were funny…where would you put it (one guy said in the Cove), 90s Barry or later larger one, with elbow guard or not. Something else likely decided by Larry Baer and marketing dept, yuck.
Giants have OK to allow fans at ST games, though only 1000 of them. Wonder if Kuiper and Miller plan to be there to do games live or not. Kuiper said doing ST games remotely would be crapshoot for trying to identify some of players. Think first one around end of month, 28 games planned in 30 days, 14 home games. Tentatively of course.
I kinda like the idea as a way to give the middle finger to the rest of MLB. Maybe put the statue where the sportswriters enter the stadium.
Great idea Mac.
Years ago one of our Splash geniuses suggested they construct a “clear” statue of Bonds at ATT.
Maybe acrylic? Awesome idea!
I don’t care if they put up a statue or not. I don’t condone steroid use but I believe probably a 3rd of Major leaguers used the stuff at one time or another. It’s just that Barry was so high profile and the sports writers hated him. So they used him as the poster boy. When I think of it I hope they do put one up.
Yeah, when it comes to Bonds, most of those snortswriters are little more than bruised egos and sore assholes.
Completely
Reading through Pavs story on “Same OF despite off season rumors” on nbc site, Pavs had Slater and Ruf with inside track for OF spots alongside Dickerson Dubon Yaz. Mentioned Wade Davis and Duggar, all of whom have options, and said, “None of the 3 look headed for the Opening Day roster, although Duggar would be a nice fit for the bench if the Giants had a spot open up.” Slater does have an option too though Pavs thought it unlikely Giants would send him back to Sac.
And speaking of Bonds, he noted no Giants OF has hit 30 bombs in a season since. Highest I can recall is Pence having 27 one of those years he was playing all 162.
What infielder did?
Kent! Robbed of HOF…
Hadda be later, GH.
Kent was gone after 2002.
Bonds 2007, right?
I don’t think even Pablo did.
Yes he did!
Oops, no he didn’t…
I would not like Barry to share a space with Willie McCovey in McCovey cove that’s just wrong!
Why not one in the stadium near the juice section?
Did they ever put McCovey’s statue back?
I think it was MIA for awhile…
Not sure the stadium at 3rd and King would have happened without Bonds, so neither would the other statues. Bonds should be in the HOF so he gets a statue, and I agree with Mac on where to put it.
this reaction from Juan T before Curry even releases the shot is solid gold
I continue to be pro-statue of all sorts…interesting Mark Cuban and anthem issue that I have been on Cuban’s side for years. Only play the damn thing at big events. Let’s give some meaning back into it.
Dawg, my golf game as gotten shoddy. Back acting up and now following through with frickin driver. 49-50 here in Ventura Co and could not sink a put all day. My 46 back 9 at Del Monte gave me some encouragement last week. Will try and play a couple Santa Cruz public courses next week before heading back to the snow. Back home think they are getting about 10 days of snow over 11 days till I fly back next Fri morn.
I usually take backaid max (2 yellow pills) before my golf 🏌️♂️at the driving range are just before it really loosens up the back by the 3 rd hole are so, that and a Bloody Mary for when the game turns for the worse is always advised..
Why erect a statue for Bonds when he won’t even make it in the HOF?
Those statues are on 3rd&King are of HOF players only,Mays,Marichal,McCovey,Perry,Cepeda
Agree, Kat, but they are also all SF Giants who had their numbers retired. HOF or not, I have no doubt that the Giants will retire number 25.
Think they did two, three years ago
Good to know, thanks Xoot. Time to break out the bronze.
Cepeda who I worshiped and literally cried when he was traded really doesn’t belong in the HOF.
Perry – borderline.
Big time compiler and admitted cheat.
Loved him, too…
I couldn’t believe that we got rid of Cepeda. I am still pissed about it. Loved Perry too. Is it still cheating when you let everyone know about it?
Hey Flav, are you feeling any better?
yes. Symptoms literally went away immediately. Last night around midnight, boom, gone. So, it was a 36 hour thing for me.
Thanks for the info, going in tomorrow and not planning on doing anything for a day, or two.
Loo, what is answer to your 10:20?
Last time I could find Bonds hit more than 30 HRs was 2004, when he hit 45.
for an OF, Pence hit 27 in 2003. Huff had 26 as one year wonder 2010.
I don’t know!
Did I misinterpret your 8:54?
There ain’t no one…
I could really give 2 shits about pitchers cheating. So here’s my list of so called cheaters who pitched:
Whitey Ford – Well known fact and he even admitted that he cheated later in his career by scuffing up the ball with his wedding ring, belt, etc. He also used petroleum jelly. By the by, Elston Howard was his accomplice too, e.g., he would rub the ball on his shin guard for Whitey.
Art Fowler – Spitter, but more famous for being a coach who taught Mike Norris, Rick Langford, Steve McCatty, Matt Keough and Brian Kingman the spitter, along with other “tricks” of the trade. Consequently, you can add all those guys to the so called cheat list.
Don Sutton – Never met a baseball he didn’t deface. lol
Tommy John – Mr. John famously said in answer to how many pitches did he have, “Four basic ones—fastball, curve, slider and change-up—plus eight illegal ones.”
Mike Scott – A mediocre pitcher for years, until he learned how to scuff balls in 1985 (SO rate went from 5.6/9 to 10/9).
Joe Niekro – Do a search of his name and “emery board.” Video of him tossing it aside is proof. lol
Kevin Gross – Suspended 10 games in 1987 or 1988 for scuffing the ball. I think his glove was confiscated too.
Preacher Roe – Anyone recall the SI article, titled, “The Outlawed Spitball Was My Money Pitch” just one year after his retirement?
Orel Hershiser – In the 1997 playoffs, Hershiser threw seven scoreless innings in a Cleveland Indians victory, leading opposing manager Davey Johnson to accuse Hershiser of cheating. Making matters worse, Chad Ogea, Hershiser’s teammate, responded to Johnson’s accusation by telling reporters after the game, “He cheats, and everybody else does. Why not? He showed me how to cheat, but he said I can’t do it until I’m about 35. So if I stay around that long, I get the privilege to cheat.” lol
Lew Burdette – Joe Torre, Burdette’s catcher during his time with the Braves, later admitted to New York Newsday that Burdette was throwing spitballs and that the catcher was in on it, saying, “I called [for] all of Lew Burdette’s spitballs. Otherwise, I’d never have been able to catch them.”
Rick Honeycutt – Taped a thumbtack to a finger on his glove hand so he could rough the ball up during the game.
Mike Pineda – Remember the pine tar game against the Red Sox, where he was “hiding” it on his neck?
Kenny Rogers – Ask St. Louis . . . about the pine tar incident in the World Series.
Jay Howell – Howell, the best reliever on the 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers team that went on to win the World Series, was suspended for three days during the NLCS for having a foreign substance on his glove.
My point is that they all cheat, batters, pitchers, coaches, EVERYONE. Shit, that’s why they should make steroids legal.
“I didn’t begin cheating until late in my career, when I needed something to help me survive. I didn’t cheat when I won the twenty-five games in 1961. I don’t want anybody to get any ideas and take my Cy Young Award away. And I didn’t cheat in 1963 when I won twenty-four games. Well, maybe a little.” Whitey Ford
Yep. At least he (and many of those guys I mentioned) were honest about it.
Great post Blade, lots of research 🧐 my man!
Curious if u know if Steve Howell use to doctor up the ball with cocaine to make it livelier?
lol . . . Dunno AK, but having used cocaine – I know it makes you feel like you can do anything (not).
Wow, Blade, that’s quite the list! Lots in there I wasn’t aware of.
John, that’s quite a compliment coming from you, i.e., there’s not a lot that you haven’t seen, read, or viewed regarding the game of baseball. Just me, but I think your knowledge is up there with Twin’s encyclopedic knowledge of the game. I’m curious which one(s) weren’t you aware of?
Fowler and Burdette for sure, and not sure I’ve ever seen that Ogea quote about Hershiser before.
My understanding is that there were quite a few drugs in the clubhouses in the 60’s. If you were sluggish then here have a greenie.
In the coffee. There was regular and uh extra.
I don’t know if it is still there, but there was a mini Baseball field across McCovey cove by the parking lot, they could put the Statue there.
Brebbia news!
Aisle say!
oh my . . . painful . . . ouch . . .
Funny stuff
That’s funny. Bill Russell shown look laughing there is 87 today. Not enough fingers for all the rings.
Yeah, they got rid of the little park where McCovey was. Not sure where they are moving him.
The Bonds statue should be him standing IN McCovey cove.
That would be awesome.
So he’s in storage somewhere?
WTF?
Like Ted Williams…
Yep. Pretty sucky if you ask me.
McCovey statue storage? I’ll bet Charles Johnson’s son, who’s the controlling owner now, has parties in that warehouse.
Are they also going to have a slew of kayak statues as well?
The McCovey statue will reappear on “McCovey Point,” after a redesign of the Point, if I remember correctly. The little ballpark is being removed. I never saw anyone using it.
There was a time in NY when I would say literally every park was a drug supermarket…
In Berkeley, the sprinklers come on strategically. I love that town. I’m thinking about moving back. 35 years later it’s still the best.
I can see putting up a statue of Barry, but the problem with it is how things are still not resolved yet about Barry. Barry is in a nebulous situation. He could talk openly about what he did. That would help. If he just wants to stonewall it, then so be it. It stays unresolved.
i don’t know, what’s the point? There isn’t anything unresolved, he took steroids and that is known. Having him discuss it isn’t interesting to me. And what does he get out of discussing it publicly? If there were some unanswered questions I’d be interested. I can’t think of a single question I’d ask Bonds that I either don’t already know the answer to or that I’d be interested in hearing him answer.
The Giants and him are left in limbo with each other then, on and on into the future. Everybody just sort of pretending everything’s OK. Krukow and Kuiper having to pretend they’re OK regarding Barry.
This team is going to change shape constantly, like some sort of fantasy beast.
Everybody’s laughing,
Everybody’s happy…
Cuando para mucho mi amore de felice corazón
Caught some of G League Warriors, flat awful. like watching the jv game before varsity get on the floor. Santa Cruz boys got smoked, with Poole Mannion and Jeremy Lin. quarter I watched they produced 1 hoop, corner 3 from Lee assist to Mannion. lin had an assist too. Otherwise rash of missed shots, turnovers, yada yada. and no Mr. Mannion did not score during time I watched, on couple drives and a 3.
Guys out there trying to do too much, to impress scouts-out of control drives to hoop or spin moves where they lost ball, threw it away, or put up bad shot. Mannion took a 3 from left wing and it hit backboard wide left before bouncing off rim and out. Lin had 3 early fouls…guarding G League players?
Bagley missed the Kings’ game last night due to injury. He’s missed about half of his team’s games so far in his three seasons.
Abdul-Jabbar’s first 3 regular seasons games-played:
82
82
81
And Kareem was taking a pounding each season. The game was more physical for centers in those days.
yeah hilarious. Btw, friend of mine is St. Bonaventure alum (like Lanier) and they are having great season in A-10. Where the hell is St. Bonaventure?
Lanier had one decent teammate that I remember, Matt Gantt…
And Austin Carr had Sid Catlett.
Gilmore had 7 foot Pembrook Burrows.
Maravich had some guy named Apples something? Not sure…
Speaking of statues, Dubs fans get to watch the Nets play defense tonight.
lulz. One of great Bill King’s expressions of Barry blowing by defender was, “leaves him directing traffic.”
Should be fun. Warriors allow most points of any team in top 8 (and they are 8th) in West and are still without Wiseman.
Yeah, and Nets got all Big 3 playing. I’d take the over.
ha Mac is rolling. Just looked, it’s 245 (for game not 3 quarters). thought closer to 300.
Nets’ interior defense is especially porous, they should just lay out a welcome mat in the paint.
Re St. Bonaventure: Western NY near Pa. border.
welcome mat, lulz. Really too bad they traded Allen, he’d have none of that. Great ‘fro too.
I remember pissed off Montreal Canadiens fans used to call defenseman Patrice Brisebois “Breeze by.”
cbs site used to allow blogger comments on NHL game recaps, great read.
The A’s traded for Elvis Andrus, who will be 33 next year when they still have to pay him $14 mil, and 37 year old Jed Lowrie to play 2b. These moves were made to fill in middle IF because they didn’t want to pay either Semien or LaStella to stick around. Huh?
Surprised LaStella didn’t go to the Pads. The A’s love stocking the Pads lineup.
Apple Sanders
Thank you…
Melonhead is back!!!
Lol 😂 no not with us,had u going for a second hurling your Wheaties and coffee ☕️!
But we will be seeing him a bunch again cause he just signed with the Padres..
great tennis match going on at Aussie Open too. Osaka down 4-3 in 3rd set with Muguruza serving.
Oubre pretty tough defender, might be able to bother Irving. And then he scores right over Irving too.
Ha, wasn’t expecting a runaway win.
never heard of the forward (Brown) who scored all the points. Irving lit them up with his drives and Harden with 16 assists. Locals noticed all the hugs etc btw Durant and Warriors players, also the stare down at bench in 3rd Q. Hey he earned it.
did get the over too Mac.
giants did bring back luis baseball too on minors deal.
Luís still a key player for the team they say!
If he’s that great why did he clear waivers?
Good question.
Tennis match was exciting too. Osaka was down 5-3 in last set, held serve, then broke and swept remaining points to win 7-5. Muguruza from Spain just couldn’t close it out when she had match points on her own serve.
Both played really well.
Silver lining for Warriors in how well Durant is playing—bodes well for Klay Thompson comeback next season from achilles injury. As Kerr said, “We’ve talked about how great Kevin looked and how inspiring that was.” and “Klay noticed, and I think he definitely feels good about watching Kevin and his performance, how well he’s playing and how good he looks physically.”
As former Giants turn: Panik signs another minor league deal with Toronto and Rays sign one with Strickland.
Wow, I know Rays do more with less, but there is one helluva project.
