A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Our Pitching Woes

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 15, 2021

As noted two threads ago by Stix, The A’s have scooped up a couple of ex-Giants: Romo and Yuzzie Pet. I always liked Petit and never understood why the Giants let him go. Romo seems to be on his last legs but he’s seemed that way for years and keeps getting a job so what do I know?

It’ll be interesting to see how Kapler uses the bullpen. Now that he’s got complete reigns of the team and going into a brand new year you wonder if he and Z will go full on Opener/Piggy Backer/all that jazz. They do seem to be setting up the bullpen for such an approach should they decide to go that way. And our starters are not exactly built for the long game–you know, 5-6 innings. Today’s long game.

mm don’t think Petit has been very effective for a while either. Always liked Romo, just wonder how hard he throws these days. No dot slider used to be death to RHs, um quite some time ago. 3 batter rule not good for him I don’t think.

I read somewhere Giants opening schedule has bunch of days off and they might not even need 5 SPs for first couple weeks. Openers would surprise me barring injuries to rotation; there was nbc site column with headline Giants were going to be conservative with Webb but didn’t read it. His problem is using 100 pitches to get through 4 innings and blowing himself up. At some point Kapler must get tired of watching it. I sure did.

Giants have 3 days off, including Sunday on opening weekend (!), in the first 15 days of the season, then play 13 straight days. There’s a trip to Philly in the 13-game stretch, so always a chance for a rainout in April. Weirdest quirk in the schedule is the Giants don’t play their first game vs. Dodgers until May 21.

Cat thread pix etc amazing. thanks for sharing flav, great story.
Read a great story once by Japanese writer told from cat’s point of view, living in different households via its wits in regards to people after owner could no longer afford him. Fantastic writing, even had a love interest.

i don’t understand how anyone couldn’t like a cat. But there are a lot of people out there who hate cats. Lol, why?

        They are afraid of them.

Little Katie cradling baby Carson is phenomenal…

  4. willedav said, on February 15, 2021 at 8:22 am

Petit has continued to be very effective last few years, and only cost A’s 2.5 mil, and pitched 80-90 innings up until short season 2020. Seems like really good get. Wonder why no one else snapped him up til now.
According to story he continues to outperform the peripherals, which makes you wonder about accuracy of analytics projections. One thing Law said years ago is that MLB teams have access to so much more statcast etc. data than is available to general public

    • djloo27 said, on February 15, 2021 at 8:28 am

Petit’s worth having just for the presence of his wife’s rack in the stands.
She has to rest it on the back of the seat in front of her…

Boomer Esiason (who I like) cannot go 15 minutes without using the dumbass phrase “way, shape or form”
    It drives me fuckin’ nuts…

I’m getting annoyed by all the news pundits who stick in the words “Look” and “right?” a lot. It seems like they do it more now.
“Look, it’s his best move, right? He has no other good options, right? It’s his best strategy, right?”

      • djloo27 said, on February 15, 2021 at 9:46 am

I had to stop watching Shark Tank because of all the contestants answering questions by starting every sentence with “so”.
        I realize that I need help…

    • James said, on February 15, 2021 at 12:16 pm

There’s also currently a fashion for responding to each question in an interview with a thoughtful, affirmative “Yeeahhh, …”

    • James said, on February 15, 2021 at 12:22 pm

And then there’s the ubiquitous “Yeah, no…” in which the speaker wants to offer reassurance that the statement or question being responded to is really ok.

      • Carstie Clausen said, on February 15, 2021 at 12:51 pm

The one that always got to me was “going forward”. Are they concerned about their reverse gear? What if there’s a bend in the road? Forward to just exactly where?

Extra day of racing at Santa Anita today. flavien Prat won 4 races yesterday and is now tied atop jockey standings with Umberto Rispoli, one ahead of Juan Hernandez, 2 up on Joel Rosario (2 winners yesterday) and 4 ahead of Abel Cedillo. Dreary weather here yesterday and today, misty and overcast; SoCal usually gets it day after us.

How are your apprentice girls holding up?

      • willedav said, on February 15, 2021 at 10:27 am

ha, not my favs at all. Pyfer far down list for winners, around 8th. low pct of horses in $$. One style only what I’ve seen, as Flav said mostly just takes horse to lead regardless. Haven’t noticed any at GGF either.
By contrast, there are successful women trainers at SA. Back East I’m not sure

      • djloo27 said, on February 15, 2021 at 10:55 am

There are successful female trainers here, too. Linda Rice is the biggest. She’s a crook (see link).
When she sees me at Belmont, she literally runs the other way.
I’ve never said anything to her except “Hi Linda”…

Colombian Gold running in 3rd at SA. ah those were days…of course where bud really came from, who knew.

    • Winder said, on February 15, 2021 at 1:40 pm

The Columbian Gold always tasted and smelled like Lebanese Blond to me. So like you said who knows where it really came from.

      • willedav said, on February 15, 2021 at 2:03 pm

mm way I remember “red” was supposed to be better.
Horse was beaten by 3rd choice Star of Africa, gate to wire ridden by Abel Cedillo.
Best hash was supposed to be Moroccan, no?

      • Bozo said, on February 15, 2021 at 2:17 pm

I did hear Z talking about Webb saying he’s never thrown more then 100 innings but once and since last year was a shortened season they didn’t mind let him go .But not this year if it turns into a regular season they don’t want to overuse him on innings and pitches.. Lol I am with Willied watching Webb throw 60 pitches plus in 2 innings is good enough for me and the Giants to get him out quicker. Now if he can control his use of pitches to 80 in 5 innings he might qualify for some wins now ..

The Giants have 3 starters coming back from injuries, they would be wise to keep kicking the rusty rims on 2 more starters on their usual 1 year deals.. I’m thinking 🤔 guys like JulioTeheran,Tarquin Walker, is Paxton still out there( probably too rich for the Giants) I really like Walker and Teheran is not bad if they would settle for the usual Giants approach of 1 year prove it contract deal..

    • djloo27 said, on February 15, 2021 at 2:58 pm

I heard Paxton signed somewhere over the weekend…

The Kings get the Nets tonight, and the Kings are leaking oil lately. The Kings had gotten a game above .500, then some injuries hit, and some basic running out of energy. They’re going to need to find some energy tonight or it’s going to be ugly.

    • Flavor said, on February 15, 2021 at 6:46 pm

no Holmes tonight. Bagley will start at C but be on a min restriction. Could see more Whiteside tonight than usual

      • willedav said, on February 15, 2021 at 6:58 pm

Stanford women on ESPN. Up 7 at Oregon. Fun to watch get lot of points inside. Ducks have really good point, from Hawaii. Cards 18-2 on year.

Who’s having a better season than Julius Randle?

    • Flavor said, on February 15, 2021 at 7:15 pm

Jokic. But in terms of expectations? Randle is far exceeding those

  15. Flavor said, on February 15, 2021 at 7:07 pm

warrior game the only game bilasport isn’t showing tonight, lol, of course

  16. Flavor said, on February 15, 2021 at 7:14 pm

  19. zumiee said, on February 15, 2021 at 7:29 pm

The Nets aren’t great defensively, but are loaded on offense. 3 Hall of Fame scorers who are still playing very well.

    • zumiee said, on February 15, 2021 at 7:34 pm

No Durant tonight, though, after getting injured vs. the Warriors.

    • Macdog said, on February 15, 2021 at 7:37 pm

“The Nets aren’t great defensively,” uh, yeah.

      • Flavor said, on February 15, 2021 at 8:05 pm

i wonder if they could fit Drummund under the cap?

      • Macdog said, on February 15, 2021 at 8:14 pm

Here’s one analysis: matching salaries on Drummond’s $28.7 million deal would mean coming up with a package worth at least $22.9 million, most likely requiring a third team to complete a deal. And third teams in big trades usually exact a heavy price in draft picks, something the Nets don’t have, and/or good young players.

      Giants suck.
Pillar, Puig and Yaz woulda been a cool outfield…

      • unca_chuck said, on February 15, 2021 at 8:11 pm

Puig is a dried up overrated turd. You don’t like Ruf Yaz Dick?

        Pillar’s WAR last season….wait for it….
        1.0!

      • alleykat69 said, on February 15, 2021 at 8:50 pm

Ruf and Dick are not outfielders period!
There only around especially in Dickerson’s case for the power he occasionally shows before he gets hurt.
Ruf should just be replaced by Davis full time if the Giants had any brains..

  21. unca_chuck said, on February 15, 2021 at 8:10 pm

    Today’s NBA: a zillion 3-point shots.
Kings TV analyst Doug Christie said tonight: “Running plays is antiquated now.” Good way of saying it.

  24. willedav said, on February 16, 2021 at 7:03 am

Pillar keeps bouncing around, see how much PT he gets in Mets crowded OF. Fan fav though wherever he goes. Adding in Luis Baseball to Giants (and River Cats) OF mix ups depth to 9 now I think. Plus lower level prospects like Ramos Bishop Matos yada yada.

    • willedav said, on February 16, 2021 at 7:06 am

IF of course is different. One more season of Belt Flores Crawford Solano and Posey, with Longoria soon to follow. LaStella only one left with multi year deal.
